I remember hearing this a lot from my oldest sister along with a lot of Disco stuff like the Bee Gees, KC and the Sunshine Band, ABBA, or anything you could dance to. I heard most everything though as I have 6 brothers and sisters and of course, parents and each of us had different tastes in music. There was always a wide variety of music going in the house.
Earth, Wind and Fire is one of those groups which brings back great childhood memories for me. Their music often emanates from hatches on my boat, or speakers on deck, to this day. Feels good. BTW, BJ has that chair dancing down and Asia your smile brightens the day.
Watching Verdine White lay down that base line reminds me of California Jam 1 and watching the unbelievable energy of dancing and expert playing, you can’t sit still during the songs unless it was one of EW&F’s slow ballads. These guys killed their set at California Jam along with all the other acts that played. What a perfect inclusion EW&F were that afternoon!
Just to say that I'm a GenXer, listen to so many different types of music, from classical to contemporary of different genres from Indie to Rock to R&B, but I consider this particular song to be a definite forerunner for my favourite 'pop' song, Stevie Wonders Superstitious and Elton John's Rocket Man are others. Just the opening 'hits' it starts off running, then doesn't let up, it jumps and just makes you want to at least 'move', Such great song writing. I'm not a musician so I can't speak to exactly what Allee Willis did to write such a fabulous song, but it is fabulous! Not to mention how well the band played and sang the song, basically a perfect storm, a perfect song performed by the perfect band for the song...this is the result.
In 1981, I was in the Navy and overseas on a ship. I had a Sony Walkman and an Earth Wind & Fire Greatest Hits tape......can't tell you how many nights I sat out on the deck and listened to it....awesomeness!
I know the feeling Dennis. I was a kid around that time. But, I heard this song for the 1st time at my bedroom fire escape window on a boombox radio and I went crazy. I almost fell off the fire escape dancing on the steps of that window. Luckily at the last second I held on to the ledge and that saved my life. That's how hard this song hit me when I 1st heard it.
This has always been one of the feel good songs for me. Whenever I get into a funk, it lifts me up and changes my mood immediately. Love me some EWF, anytime, anywhere.

Great music indeed. What is super impressive though? Their live shows we every bit as good as the studio versions with regards to capturing every freakin musical instrument. They brought their WHOLE band with them for concerts, and they killed the vocals, the harmonies and the music every time.

As a young white kid growing up in Lilly White Maine EW&F and the Commodores were my first introduction to black folks. Still grew up a fully functioning metalhead, but always enjoy EW&F and Commodores and the like. Can't help myself but to sing along and bop.
1978 I was 16 and a total black music fan (and still am today). Then Earth Wind and Fire's new album came out (it's extremely good) and "September" was taken from that. Whether in clubs (which you could smuggle yourself into at 16) or parties, the atmosphere exploded. It has lost none of its effectiveness to this day. I saw these guys at Jazz Fest in New Orleans years ago. One of my favorite all time live concerts. Yeah they can flat play those instruments and are very entertaining. They sound just as good live as their recordings which a lot of bands can't do. Maurice White is one my all time fave voices. Phillip Bailey (high singing guy) did a song with Phil Collins from Genesis "Easy "Lover"
