And on a song that suggests that everyone accept that people may judge it, but don't choose pretension, or otherwise impressing others, over having fun with your own life. The lack of guile in the whole performance is remarkable for such huge stars with such crystal clear voices.
Who wouldn’t be? She always remained humble and never let her fame role her. Such a phenomenal instrument she had - it just doesn’t get better than Ella.
The song was from a 1937 musical and was incorporated into a 1957 film starring Frank Sinatra- “Pal Joey.” Most jazz icons over the past few decades (even Lady Gaga) have done their own version of this song. It is meant to be a somewhat sarcastic put-down of pretentious “high society” folks and their phoniness. The team of Rogers (did the music) & Hart (did the lyrics) created this and they wrote dozens of famous standards. Enjoy! 🎶
Ella was always consiedered the best female voice for this style of music. I think we just saw why. This was one of Frank Sinatra's signature songs, but he didn't write his own songs. The song is basically saying the upper crust considered her a tramp because she's not doing all the stuff all the other snobs. do. They added some lyrics for Ella. Great video and great reaction.
Ella crowned Queen and First Lady of Jazz debut in late 1930s. Every Big Bandleader, top crooner all WANTED Ella to perform with them. She was anointed First Lady and Queen by the Industry, performers, historians, authors and public.
@@adriennerobinson1180 Adrienne absolutely they both were epic performers my love for Ella goes back to when I was a child and my parents would be playing Greek music and Ella in this country. She was famous in Greece. My Mom would tell me after the Germans moved out during WW2 you can here a scattering of music in the villages one being Ella.
It’s interesting Asia said Ella “made it” getting to be on the stage with Sinatra, when in fact Sinatra said (as did most all singers of the time) that Ella was the reigning Queen and those that got to sing with her had “made it”. Sinatra was totally in awe of Fitzgerald. She did have the finest voice in the industry. Such a legend, and so deserved.
Ella was every bit the Icon as Sinatra. Sinatra was adamant that race would not be a barrier to who he performed with, despite the racial tensions that were still there in that day. But few could argue against the fact that these two were absolute peers in every way.
Now this is a class act, two legends singing together, it doesn’t get much better than this, damn this music is great, you hit right on point by saying they are dressed in class and style
One of the signs of great singers is their ability to be able to shape and accommodate their style to blend well with other performers. These two were a couple of the best at that. Ella initially rose up in more jazz/rhythm & blues genre before it became apparent that she could sing anything. One of the greatest of the great. The song was written for the Broadway musical Babes in Arms by the team of Richard Rodgers and Lorenzo Hart (Rodgers partner before he teamed with Oscar Hammerstein). It became a standard during the 40's and was recorded by many (including Sinatra & Ella separately) and was used in the film version of the play Pal Joey (also starring Sinatra).
You guys really got the spirit of this one: sweetly giddy fun. Lots of sophisticated and satirical lyrics, the irresistible swing of the music, the byplay between the two great song stylists … Waiter! Another bottle of champagne for the table!
I watched a documentary on Ella's life and career , She led one hell of a life ! Extremely charitable woman , She gave a lot of her money away to schools and colleges for underprivileged children ! Quite a lady !
Listen you guys....they were BOTH jazz legends in their own right. I really, really miss these performers. The absolute epitome of jazz/pop perfection.
No one is better than these two, talent is beyond the stars. This song is from a Broadway musical "Babes in Arms" from 1937 by Rogers and Hart. Their timing is amazing and that's not easy
The King and Queen of "The Great American Songbook". That period in the 20th century when Broadway and Hollywood had the great shows and musicals and great songwriters like George and Ira Gershwin, Irving Berlin, Cole Porter, Rogers and Hart, Johnny Mercer, and, so, so many others. Over the years Ella and Franks sang them all. You're right that the song "The Lady is a Tramp", comes from a musical. It may have appeared in earlier Broadway musicals, but it's most widely known from the late fifties musical film, "Pal Joey". It starred Frank Sinatra, Kim Novak and Rita Hayworth. Frank does a knockout version of the song in a nightclub setting. Very witty and dryly humorous sung to a rich spoiled lady he's putting down and also flirting with. Worth catching on You Tube.
Frank absolutely loved Ella! In his eyes, she was very very much his equal. I agree 1000% ! She was an iconic wonderful gal. What a beautiful soul and voice. There is a video of them singing at a celebration of his career and he was either 75 or 80 years old when he sings with her and they were mesmerizing. Here these two old friends have just has much fun as they did 30 years earlier. Enjoyed your take on this duet. This was part of one of his TV shows where they sing multiple songs together. You can see he just adores her singing and her presence. Thank you
Oh yeah, Richard Rogers and Lorenz Hart wrote the music and lyrics of this tune in 1937; this was an old standard when Sinatra and Fitzgerald performed this duet. Therefore, this is a great example of the timelessness of music.
Ella is my music HERO. Her artistry and musicianship is what inspired me to pursue music. She had no aspirations to be a singer, she wanted to be a dancer. She was a contestant on Amateur Night at The Apollo Theater in Harlem one night. She was supposed to do a dance number, but a dance group called The Edward Sisters went on before her. They danced so well, that Ella didn't think she could follow them, so she performed a song instead and ended up winning Amateur Night. The Great Chic Webb happened to be in the audience. He was a celebrated Jazz Band Leader. It was he who discovered her, and the rest is history. No one has recorded more volumes of music than Sinatra and Ella. Sinatra had once said that Ella was his most favorite singer of all time. A little known fact about Ella...she possessed both perfect and relative pitch--something that is very rare. Thank you Aisa and BJ for highlighting this amazing performance.
A Classic, I have nothing more too add with my comment except for that a saw a maybe two part special on Ella last fall I think and it was amazing. Extremely talented lady. Peace ❤
Sorry, but that a different song. The one from "Lady and the Tramp" was called "He's a Tramp" and was written and sung in the movie by Peggy Lee. "The Lady is a Tramp" is from a 1930s Broadway show and became a classic.
Ella Fitzgerald sang duets with every iconic singer in the day including Bing Crosby, Perry Como, Sammy Davis, Jr., Dean Martin, Andy Williams, Louis Armstrong, Tony Bennett, Dinah Shore, Pearl Bailey, Nat King Cole and Pat Boone. She also recorded over 200 albums.
This was one of my dad's favorite songs. Two great legends singing such a swinging classic tune! Thanks so much guys, love it!!💃💃 Disney movie?? You guys crack me up😂
Saw this quote: Sinatra said Ella Fitzgerald was the best singer he ever heard and the only one who made him nervous to sing with, because he had to be up to her standards. “The best way to start any musical evening is with this girl."
Lady and the Tramp is a 1955 animated film from Disney. Peggy Lee co-wrote and sang the song “He’s a Tramp” in the film. If you like Frank Sinatra have a listen to him with the Rat Pack (Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jnr.) at The Sands in Las Vegas. Also Frank Sinatra recorded an album called Duets. The song “The Lady is a Tramp” is a show tune from the 1937 musical “Babes in Arms” which was composed by Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart. The song was originally introduced by child star Mitzi Green. The song is a spoof of the high society and strict etiquette and the phony sonical pretensions in New York.
When Ella was very young she took an old nursery rhyme A Tisket A Tasket and in seven months sold over 1 million records. 20 million today. Before Sinatra. She began to roll. She appeared in 1941 a movie Ride Em Cowboy the Abbott & Costello movie the comedy team that was #1 at the movie theaters. She performed the tongue and cheek song in the movie.
IMO the greatest duet in the history of American pop music. They did another version very late in life when Sinatra was winning an award from the Society of Singers--the award is called the Ella--and Ms Fitzgerald, who was very ill and really couldn't walk on her own at that point, reprised this with Sinatra and, predicably, brought the house down.
Ella and Sarah Vaughn blow me away anyhow. I love Frank’s voice too. Not so jazzy as this performance, but he is the man in his craft. Don’t let Ella start scatting! It’s over !
I got to see Ella in concert toward the end of her career. Her vision was so poor by this time that she needed to be guided onto the stage. But,oh,when she opened her mouth to sing,it was pure perfection! Loved her so much!❤️ Thank you for this great reaction!

Frank loved Ella. When Frank found out that Ella was not being allowed to stay at the Hotels that she was performing at, because she was black, Frank threatened them all, saying he would not perform at their hotels, and maybe some other mafia style threats, lol,lol,lol.... as he was known to have Mafia "connections." Frank opened a lot of doors for Ella, and a lot of other Black entertainers who were being mistreated by the music industry and hotels. He was a good man.

COMMENTS: From, Deidra Egan, John Little & DJ Grant, are spot on with their comments. I've heard Sinatra use the word "champ" as opposed to "tramp". That's the way I used to sing it to my Mom. "Tramp" did not mean todays version of the word.
theres a version they do together (i think around the late 1980s/early 90s) and they’re both coming toward the end of their careers, voices going, and they put together a great song. Showing a small bit of what they used to be like, i definitely recommend!
I remember in the early 80s she did a commercial for Memorex when she was in her 60's in which she reached a pitch that was able to shatter a glass and then played it back and it was clear enough to shatter

Love watching these reaction videos to Frank. I would like to point something out: Sinatra is thought of as a “crooner”, but he’s actually an incredible jazz artist This video, in fact, is the proof. Ella the best, check out Frank Sinatra when he was singing with the Dorsey band in the 1940’s before he ruptured a vocal cord. He voice was Nat King Cole-ish. Fortunately when he healed he had to change he’s style which was amazing. New song High Hopes 👍👍

Ella the best, check out Frank Sinatra when he was singing with the Dorsey band in the 1940’s before he ruptured a vocal cord. He voice was Nat King Cole-ish. Fortunately when he healed he had to change he’s style which was amazing. New song High Hopes 👍👍
Excellence in music. ❤️
