Is a recording in a studio "live"? Actually, he's performing under optimal conditions. Performing live before an actual audience is much more difficult - no retakes.

    • @ParkerAllen2
      @ParkerAllen2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@josephpaul4548 Yes, he is recording live in the studio, in a way that practically nobody ever does. Sure it's optimal for sound, but he still has to deliver while a full orchestra is playing live with him. In that situation, you don't have the luxury that very successful small bands have of recording for months and mixing endlessly the best takes. When you're working with a full orchestra you can't keep that many musicians endlessly recording. That means he's got to deliver a great performance in very few takes. Plus, his "audience" is fellow professionals, who's good opinion he probably covets more than a non-professional, paying audience. Not to mention that the performance he delivers is immortalized, good or bad, while a performance before a paying audience instantly disappears. If you think it's easy, give it try. He was brilliant at it.

    • @josephpaul4548
      @josephpaul4548 ปีที่แล้ว

@Parker Allen That's all true, but not just for this session, of course. Weren't virtually all his albums from Columbia, Capitol, and Reprise, excepting the recorded concerts and other special public performances, recorded in this environment? By the time he recorded this (1964?) he was very much at home in the studio backed up by a first rate orchestra.

Sinatra was considered to be a "song stylist" - he used his own unique phrasing and that combined with his smooth confident masculine tenor voice thrilled his audience.
Band leaders had to arrange songs to fit Sinatra - not the other way around.

I had always heard that one of Frank's signatures was his incomparable phrasing. For years as a youngster growing up in the '70's I really didn't understand what that meant until I realized how cool it made a song he sang to not always sing rigidly within the beat. Now I have an appreciation of Sinatra I never had before, oh, and Van Morrison for the same reason. You two are way ahead of me at the same age in time.

She did many enjoyable medleys with Liza, Barbara, Frank, Dino, Mel, Gene...her "Dear Mr. Gable: You Made Me Love You" is sweet. "Suwanee," "Chicago," "How About You," "By Myself," "Rockabye Your Baby with a Dixie Melody." Michael Jackson's favorite song, "Smile." Through all the versions of "The Shop Around the Corner," her "In the Good Old Summertime" is my favorite and only musical version, good song, too.. "You've Got Mail" was the last version as far as I know. And, for Christmas, "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas!" I had her albums when I was a young teen. Read countless bios. Even saw "The Pirate," ha ha. I spend many evenings 40 years later listening to her on YT. And Liza's "Cabaret" songs. Solitary life!

Sinatra is a master of phrasing. Note when he chooses to come back into the lyric after the instrumental break. His voice is one of the instruments. Sometimes he will playfully push the rhythm along. Other times he may hide behind the beat. But this is always in service to the song. He never goes for a dramatic note just to show off his vocal chops. It is always to convey a mood or feeling. Note when he sings the phrase "won't you please arrange it," he is playfully singing, or almost speaking the lyrics and emphatically stops on the last word, it. You get extra enjoyment listening to how he plays with the lyrics.

Frank had a very unique and organic way of singing. Down to the very way he formed his words and delivered them made his sound iconic. What is a wonderful study sometime is to listen to how his style evolved from when he was in his 20's all the way through his 50's and 60's when his voice warmed and he had the air of the Grand Elder Statesman of music. He earned the respect of everyone in the business, even across genres and generations. So happy you're still enjoying Frank and all the crooners! ❤

Frank started his career as a singer in clubs with big band groups during the swing era of music. I have my dad's collection of vinyls from back in the 30's and 40's, a lot of them you have to play on a 78 turntable speed, I don't even know where to get one of those. I grew up listening to all of it, glen Miller, jimmy and tommy Dorsey, Bennie Goodman, Artie shaw, cab calloway, a lot of greats.

    WATCHED THIS AGAIN!!!
It’s been awhile , as I perused through your reactions, this popped up again.
I hope that you’re reading this comment.
This song is very very special to me.
I’ve been on my own up here in Montana since 2016.
My wife passed away back in May of 2015 after over 39 years of marriage.
    I’ve got 4 kids…all married…and have given me 14 grandkids.
    My point.
At least once a year at some event; usually her company Christmas party, they’d get to the dancing portion of the night.
Ultimately they would play this song and I’d grab my wife and take her out to the dance floor and fall in love all over again.
Thank you for sharing and I’m glad you’ve found how special of a crooner he was.
    God bless.

The list of male crooners is endless, but don't forget about all of the women. You've reacted to Ella Fitzgerald and Doris Day, now try Rosemary Clooney "Blues in the Night," Jo Stafford "You Belong to Me," Kay Starr "Wheel of Fortune," Georgia Gibbs "Kiss of Fire," Patty Page "Old Cape Cod," Margaret Whiting "Moonlight in Vermont," and of course Ella Mae Morse "Cow Cow Boogie." So much great singing!

You talk about how Frank can draw those magnificent notes our that melt your heart! He developed a unique way to breath ie take air in via the side of his mouth to keep a note going much longer then the normal singer! He definitely did it his way. He is much loved in my family as my late older brother used to play his Albums until the turned color from black to white. Love to old blue Eyes!!!

The song was written by Jerome Kern, and introduced to the public when Fred Astaire sang it to Ginger Rogers in the 1936 film Swing Time. I love both Astaire's and Sinatra's versions. I think I have every Sinatra LP ever produced, including the Columbia years that were originally 78's (I have them in the 33 1/3 LP versions). I started buying Sinatra albums when I was 14 (I am now in my 60's). My grandmother 'loaned' me her This Is Sinatra album and said I could give it back to her when I tired of it. I still have it.

    Great tune...!!!
The thing about Frank Sinatra is... everything. Ok, he's got talent, a marvelous voice, looks that made girls swoon way back in the 30's when Elvis or the Beatles were just gleams in their daddy's eyes. Yes, he has all that. But he always sounds like he's having *fun*
And he brings us all along...
    Thanks

Favorite button back in the 80s: "It's Sinatra's world. We're just living in it." Nelson Riddle and Billy May knew especially well how to orchestrate for Sinatra's phrasing.

There will never be another Frank Sinatra. I totally agree with Leslie - tone, confidence, phrasing, enunciation, personality, ease and style! Amazing. And if I can make a suggestion of an early Frank Sinatra song (from 1945), a short ballad written by Jules Styne and Sammy Cahn - "I fall in love too easily". One of my favorites!

Frank literally created this style of arranging his songs in the late 50’s and the 60’s and beyond, with the horns punching up the song. He knew where he wanted the horn accents to his lyrics. And he only used 3 orchestra conductors for this style… Nelson Riddle, Quincy Jones, and Count Basie. They would do exactly as he wanted it.
Maybe the very best Sinatra song which shows off his talent for painting a picture of the lyrics is the studio version of It Was a Very Good Year! The orchestral parts might be the most outstanding arrangement I have ever heard. And Frank was in rare form that day…voice was smooth as silk. There is a TH-cam video of him recording that song in the studio. It great to listen to the studio recording first and close your eyes while listening. Then go back and watch the video of him recording it. Just an amazing experience watching him work his magic!

Nelson Riddle and Billy May were Sinatra's principle arrangers/conductors with several albums arranged and conducted by Gordon Jenkins. Quincy Jones arranged and conducted the sessions with the Basie band. Gordon Jenkins arranged and conducted "It Was a Very Good Year." Going further back Axel Stordahl was his principle arranger and conductor in the 1940s and early 1950 after leaving the Tommy Dorsey band.

Ole Blue Eyes may have a challenger coming up, you did a reaction to Angelina Jordan's 'I Put A Spell On You' when she was 9, she is now 16 and she just dropped a new cover, this one is 'Suspicious Minds' by Elvis.
She has since signed with Republic Records and her first full album is due within the next couple of months.
When I first heard this song I loved it and put it at #3 on my playlist (Angelina Jordan Playlist by Terry M.), about midday I moved it up to #1. The main thing that changed my mind was the power in her voice. I'm not talking about loudness I'm talking about the power she has regardless of how loud or soft she sings. This is a quality that I haven't heard from anyone in my 82 years. This voice has become so unique that it is totally unmatched.
This video came out at midnight on June 22nd, today, June 23rd it has over 130,000 views. I think you should take another look at Angelina Jordan, she is on her way.

Frank Sinatra and the Nelson Riddle Orchestra! It doesn't get any better.
Amber, one of the reasons you like Frank's voice so much is that Frank sings like a horn plays. That's not my assessment, but Frank's description. He learned by singing with the Tommy Dorsey band, back in the '40's Syncopation, phrasing, breath control, he was a master of all of it.

Frank Sinatra was the name in music during the 4o's to the mid-6o'. He influenced Elvis, the Beatles, Tom Jones and the teen singers in early rock-n-roll. His measured ease combined with Nelson Riddle orchestral backing is the magic that never dies. I'm watching Jordan look at Amber as Frank sings and see the way he wants to sweep away his girl in his tuxedo on the dance floor as the crowd shares their moment. And Amber swooning with her eyes closed is spellbound. For more try these,
    FLY ME TO THE MOON,
    WITHCRAFT,
(I'VE GOT YOU) UNDER MY SKIN, my personal favorite, and there is a live in studio black and white video of him singing to a group of people while recording, IT WAS A VERY GOOD YEAR. Nothing better. Nothing less. All Sinatra.

Frank's recordings in the 1950s with the Nelson Riddle Orchestra are some of the essential records of that decade. A meeting of one of that eras best singers with one of the best arranger/orchestra leaders. In particular the classic 1958 version of One For My Baby (and One More For The Road) is worth a react to. There are two previous versions he recorded but this one is the classic take.

You might consider another Frank Sinatra song called Softly As I Leave You. I was heading home from seeing my mom as she was weeks away from passing and that song came on my radio. I feel certain my mom was directing me to play that song for her memorial service. One of my sisters pointed out that song at the same time. We played that song and the wonderful Nat King Cole song Unforgettable and Sentimental Journey. Mom loved the big band era.

There's a local Sinatra Tribute singer in my area who has said at multiple venues that he firmly believes that every woman should have this song sung to her or dedicated to her at least once in her life. If you want another Sinatra song that's a little more obscure, check of L.A. Is My Lady which was from his last officially released album by the same name in 1984.
