    Great reaction. He had a great voice. But he's under appreciated in his contributions to the area of arranging, phrasing and timing. He pretty much changed the way singers performed.

    • @ModernBingFan
      @ModernBingFan 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      glen kelley that was more Bing Crosby, as he more changed the way of singing compared Sinatra, Sinatra just built onto Bing’s style. Frank was told to copy or at least to look at Crosby’s phrasing and timing.

      If anything his phrasing is the most praised, there are people who actually think his voice was bad.

    • @John_Malloy
      @John_Malloy 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Bing Crosby was the voice that carried more influence but Sinatra took crooning to another level with his "swing" phrasing, breath control, and lyric delivery. He also had a cocky, mobster persona which comes across in this video.

    True, the joy and excitement of the performance is there. But actually Sinatra excelled from other crooners by using his voice and words as another instrument. What set him apart was his timing. Watch any of his serious performances. Unlike others even those with great voices, Sinatra is constantly aware of the orchestra and the music in terms of his place and involvement.

    A master communicator. In order to be one you have to also be a master of relaxation (which takes a world of confidence), the ability to interpret and personalize a lyric, and then make it personal to the audience. In those days diction and word clarity was paramount. But as I've said before on other sites, Frank was always the coolest guy in the room. Nat King Cole had these very same abilities as well (with a prettier timber in my opinion,) but Nat's personality was avuncular. Nevertheless, it always felt as if each were singing directly to you. This performance has to be with Count Basie and his orchestra. A time long and forever gone.

    Im a major metalhead and have been for 30 years. When I discuss my favorite bands, guitarists, singers and such, it is funny to see peoples expressions when I name names like Dio, Halford, Sebastian Bach and other singers and then mention that Sinatra is my favorite singer. It gets a great response....

      Same here! I'm primarily a rock/metal fan, however, I love people's faces when I tell them that I like to listen to classical music (thanks mostly to Andre Rieu), but also singers like Sinatra, Elvis (thanks to my mom who loves him), Andy Williams or Dean Martin. On the other hand, I'm 27 and it's quite sad that most people my age do not even know who any of these people are, maybe with the exception of Elvis, who's hard to miss in the modern popculture.

    In 1998, I was in a college Jazz band as a trumpet player (which was fun enough on its own, of course), and I was lucky enough to be selected to sing the vocals for this song. I'm not a vocalist by any means, but I received some excellent coaching from someone very much like Miss Roars. That made all the difference.

    Sinatra regards "Only The Lonely" on Capitol, (1958) (and I heartily concur) as his greatest album. You, your viewers, anyone who appreciates jazz, blues, and ballads need to hear that album, especially "One For My Baby" and "Blues In The Night." Do a serious critique on that material. Way past his creative prime (do one off his mid or late 1950s performances). He revolutionized music and took over ALL popular music. Everyone singer male or female was a Sinatra imitator for 20 years. He had (developed physically) outrageous breath control!!! Had to have perfect pitch because his arranger, the legendary Nelson Riddle, had band NEVER PLAY ANY OF THE MELODY and followed him (not he following band). First to make everyone believe he was SINGING JUST TO YOU. Not just perfect diction, but turned song's lyrics into a meaningful, emotional poem. Loved to live in the studio cutting LPs in the 50s, greatest ever made. By the mid-1960s smoking cost him his breath control gone, so he switched to SPEAK-SINGING for next 30 years.

    Loved your reaction. I know this is about Frank, but you did mention the band as well. Not sure if you are aware, but the band is the great Count Basie orchestra. In my opinion, Sinatra's best recordings/performances were with Count Basie. You see, I knew Count Basie; in the 70s we lived next door to him and my parents were on the committee of Count Basie's, Wife's charity The Committee of 50. Anyway, I side track. There was a close similarity with the way that Sinatra phrased the song and the way Basie phrased the music; it was like they were made for each other.

    If you like Frank so much, you can take a lesson from him on his visual microphone technique. Your own micr. technique is basically good, but needs improvement, so the top of your windscreen doesn't cross into your chin area so much. It's more visually pleasing to your audience to be able to see your chin, mouth, face. Good "rule of chin" " micr. (or screen) crossing into chin area: not good; below chin: good; below neck: better; below knot of tie: best.

    Frank Sinatra could make not english speaking people understand the words because when he sang "kick" it sounded as a kick and when he sang "beeeeending" it sounded like bending. No one, no vokalist ever, give you the lyrics better. He also got a character in the tone. I'm surpriced singers don't care more about him, Louis and Ella.

  • @LogiForce86
    @LogiForce86 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think most singers are too rushed and focused on the beat to be singing like Frank. Frank felt the swing in music, he was relaxed and taking it slow... not letting him be rushed by the beat or the band.
    Instead when Frank misses the beat he utilizes different tonations... sometimes holding a not a bit longer other times going into stoccato, but always keeping the swing of the music and the lyrics (and their meaning!) in mind.
    It isn't impossible to do but you have to mentally change from your 21st century rushed mobile phone junky self, and then just get into the mood of the swing of the song.
    People always talk about Frank's timing, but I think the whole point is that people usually are too focused on the timing itself. I'd that makes sense?

How do they play with the song? How much do they pack it in? How much is there a difference between a studio attempt to lay down the best track and the 400th time you've sung it?

    Don't wish to be too critical but you made virtually no reference to what really set Sinatra apart. His use of the strong back beat and subtly of phrasing, sitting so late on the beat that he really could swing. Sinatra's timing was peerless. Such strong rhythmic articulation is a massive feature of his style. He actually did a lot of things in this respect that are more than just "having fun"

      Sinatra had lots of praises for Jose Jose. She already reacted to that live performance for El Triste

    Could you please react to Devin Townsend - Why? th-cam.com/video/Ob8IsKzRPwg/w-d-xo.html If you do make sure to react to the studio version, the only live versions are poorly shot cellphone performances with bad audio, and you need the choir and orchestra on the album to truly enjoy it.
