    It was a pleasure to be invited back! Especially around the larger international events it's good to be able to share some of the more important narratives around the smaller teams that have real chances to land significant results, so credit to Thorin and Monte for reaching out once again, it's much appreciated.

    The biggest change I think worlds should make is follow their play-in stage format for the 2nd and 3rd seed in the group. Give the 1st seeds in the groups an automatic pass to quarters and make the 2 and 3 seeds do a Bo3 or Bo5 for a position in quarters. It’ll give the good teams a better chance to qualify for the final stretch. Some teams that go 3-3 are potentially better than the 2 seed if given the chance since there is some cheese factor in Bo1

      @@pskfry As of now, none, which is my point. Maybe I was hasty in saying NA would fall behind other regions, but as of now NA teams constantly split games with teams from wild card regions despite the NA team having every conceivable advantage.
      I say the format is shit because if there was a circuit system like in Dota, csgo or other esports, it's not inconceivable that with constant exposure and chances to compete to internationally instead of just once or twice a year, other regions could actually level up and send teams capable of putting up strong performances at Worlds. It's happened in other esports, but it doesn't in LoL for a specific Riot-designed reason. Fuck, maybe even the NA teams could actually get better as well if there were more international competitions instead of dicking around with eachother in LCS.
      It took years of development for LJL to finally get a team into group stage at Worlds, now imagine if this DFM team had multiple chances to play internationally instead of having to wait 6+ months for their next shot at an international competition next year, if the team even stays together and their stars aren't immediately poached after Worlds.

      @nicholashowie4707 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@emceemikey That's a lazy answer though. EU was also like this for years. So there is other ways to fix a region that is proven by EU's rise to power they had.

    • @emceemikey
      @emceemikey 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@nicholashowie4707 you're asking a different question now. Your first question was "get an na team to win worlds" which is really as simple as dumping c9 in China and making occasional roster swaps. How to improve the region as a whole is way way harder, because you have to market to a demographic that heavily prefers CSGO and cod, like it's tragic how small the na player base is. We're on the level of Vietnam and Brazil for crying out loud. You can't really force a market to play a game they aren't interested in so na is kind of screwed in that regard. As for the competitiveness of the region, I think sponsors are helping this a bit with like grassroots tournaments like the red bull thing going on right now. Ultimately it still just comes down to the fact that Europe and Korea have more than double the active competitive player base na does and I don't think you can fix that without devoting your entire marketing budget toward getting na players. If na wanted to compete with the top dogs without imports it would need to be at the point where it has a sizeable population on two servers, one for each coast

    • @nicholashowie4707
      @nicholashowie4707 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@emceemikey I suppose that's true, however I also see na players as being simply lazier then Chinese and a European players being the real biggest issue. Keep in mind I'm a t1 fan from a whole other game. With that in mind if you were to watch the episode of tsm legends after their first playoff game. You'd see bjergsen the coach at the time, practiced the second most in the team. If this had been any other region or sport most would gave list their jobs fir that. Here in NA we seem to almost let them get away with it. This isn't the only example of this either. Plenty of imports that come here have said the same whether it was attitude or work ethic na players seem simply lazy. I think when a coach and a org motivates a team to work their hardest we tend to see na as a whole improve. As much as these two would like to ignore it or play it off like their was no chance for na ever at worlds this hasn't always been true. Back when tsm came 1 game from worlds quarters it was because of one in game mistake in a time when many of the other major regions expressed words just short of fear of tsm. This happened again when c9 surprised and made semis at worlds. While at that time analysts played them making it that far as pure luck it did happen and many of Korea's players said they were not to be underestimated. In short a million excuses can be why a na team can't win worlds or even as a region compete there, but this simply isn't true. While you may be led to believe na's player base has been getting smaller this also isn't true, if you look at the numbers they rose since 2016. While I agree being able to rise to a lcs team is hard in na it's hard on any professional setting like this. The player base even got huge in the last year with the merge of oce to na as residents.

To address Thorin's point about reddit too is that you don't just get 1 vote in a comment string, you get multiple votes. So the game theory of it means 1 person can alter how votes are seen way too easily. If you upvote 1 and downvote another, that's a big difference than if you downvote the first and upvote the second. This is why reddit's voting is highly flawed.

    I feel like comparing minor region stats, where most teams attending worlds shit stomp their regions, to global/major region stats is disingenuous at best. Of course a team shitting on random scrubs is going to have better stats that the top LCK and LPL teams even the tier 2 regions like LEC and LCS are gonna have better average competition than these tier 3 regions. It's cool to hear about these teams and what they can do but it's not a convincing argument to say that badly they stomp and crush their regional competition so they will be able to hold their own against tier 1 & 2 teams. If a diamond player smurfs in bronze and crushes the competition, it doesn't mean he can compete at a challenger level. Not saying DFM or other teams don't have a solid chance against teams like C9 or Beyond gaming but the fact that they dominate their local competition does the opposite of convince me, it makes me think they are used to easily crushing their opponents and getting huge leads from simply being better which is almost never the case at international competition. (just look at the NA first seed curse)

    • @drago939393
      @drago939393 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      To extend your Diamond vs Bronze analogy: A Diamond player in a Bronze game can get away with many mistakes, sub-optimal plays or weird decisions. They can't get away with that against other Diamonds - or especially Challengers.
      DFM has had a solid track record but unfortunately they get to play so rarely outside of their region due to Riot's garbage system that it ultimately means nothing (sample size is too low and far apart).

    i think the top 2 teams of every region should automatically qualify for the group stage. For group draws there should be no region restrictions with respect to placing teams into groups. ie. your nationality should not determine which group your in. Then the teams that place 3rd-5th in the regions should be placed into the playins. The playins should not have groups but it should be a case of each team playin against each other team. The teams with the most wins at the end advance and ties are broken by best of 3s.
    Essentially a large playin pool and a streamlined group stage.

    C9 got downplayed a ton in these interviews and it is interesting watching the actual games play out and see that they seem to be a cut above the rest of these teams. Listening to analysts and coaches from wildcard regions talk about how they expect their teams to beat the 3rd seed from NA is very similar to listening to NA analysts and coaches talk about how they expect their teams to beat LPL 3 seeds or LCK 2 seeds... it just seems like a false sense of bravado. Not to say that sheepy and Nymaera aren't being 100% genuine and aren't awesome guests, but I feel like wildcard regions beating NA teams, in general, is an incredibly overblown narrative compared to how often it actually happens.

    Okay I don't get this: Thorin's ideal tournament to decide the best team is literally just that china vs Korea tournament they do before spring every year. Why is it so bad to have a tournament where people can root for their home teams? Why does Jamaica have a freaking bobsled team? I already prefer msi format as each region has a single seed, that feels a lot more fair to me and exciting because we get to see stuff like psg in top 4. That can't happen when the top 4 is glutted with China and Korea and European second and third seeds.

    • @LikeACrouton

      He's said pretty often his preference is just for "the highest level of competition". That's just what he values most. If you value "regional representation" more, that's fine, you'll want a format that selects for that.
