Its wild how much faker has adjusted over his career. I dont think anyone would say he's the best mid anymore, but something he does better than anyone is adapt to changes. I like how as soon as an LPL wins worlds (2018), the LPL is suddenly way better than the LCK, but when an LCK team wins worlds (2020) it's a one team region, and then when LCK has 3 teams in the semis (2021), the leagues are relatively even.
LCK is stronger because: 1. T1 finally has a good roster. 2. Summer was super competitive so they were literally forged through fire. 3. Everyone got used to playing against DWG/DK's level so every other team in the World isn't that big of a deal. 4. DWG/DK forced them to change style, games play out faster and they take more risks. (Except GenG)
I agree I feel G2 did the same thing for LEC. Even though their showing wasn’t great this worlds you can see overall that the teams looked better than any other worlds. But you’re absolutely correct
If you followed the T1 games this year, Faker actually was one of the better players in the laning phase. The problem with T1 prior to firing the coaches was they won the laning phases but was all over the place mid-to-late game. You can see a glimpse of this in the QF game 1 aginst Hanhwa where he was actually leading CS with Orianna against Chovy's Joey. My understanding on his transition to a more supportive role is that he could focus on laning phase and go toe-to-toe with the best mid-laners, but due to the fact the roster mostly consists of rookies, the team needs someone to focus on the macro and shotcalling. The whole team might collapse if he has to focus on laning. So I see him sacrificing his focus on laning and focusing on being a more supportive role. This way instead of 'maybe' winning the mid-lane match-up, you most certainly win the game by out-macroing the opposing mid laner.
I personally think that it's impressive Faker still manages to find a way to bend the game to his will to this day. So what if he had to play like Bengi? If he wins Worlds with this style and strat who would dare to say that the king is dead?
believe me, they would because Faker didn't shit on every other mid laner 1v1 with leblanc/azir/ryze/zed. That's how high the bar is set for him because he used to be that far above the rest. But in comparison, the gap between midlaners have closed to the point that Faker has to develop other strategies to stay on par with the other insane midlaners of the present
Because people respect mechanics, and those aren't mutually exclusive with game knowledge. It's impressive considering aspects like ego, but honestly not as impressive as Chovy or Showmaker. It just means many mids can play like him if they have his teammates (kinda like Bengi). It pales when compared to his prime.

There are some games I rewatch just for the play by play or colour casting. Really enjoy watching Kingzone vs Invictus Gaming Rift Rivals just cause of Atlus casting.
I also think DWK are the overwhelming favorites in the upcoming match but Thorin seems to make it a point to downplay T1's achievements so far at worlds by constantly bringing up their group opponents (conveniently excluding EDG almost every time he brings it up) and HLE. Like I get it, DWK look like giants, but it's not like T1 beat the bottom of the barrel of existing teams to get to where they are. These are still teams that made it to worlds then made it to their spots.
Oof, looks like getting our 7-8th place team to Top 8 Worlds aswell as 3 teams in Semi's isn't good enough. Welp, maybe he might admit it if we get a Korea vs Korea finals.
As a mouldy decripit LCK fanboy, if you took the top 10 teams from LCK and the top 10 teams from LPL and had em play a round robin or best of 5 against their equivalent, I don't know who puts up a good showing outside of T1 and Damwon. Maybe GenG? But like, can summit or deft and chovy or kiin and lehends carry their pile of corpses? It'd be hard to even claim that more than one or two can surprise when the two highest placing teams after those top three were Nongshim and sandbox/the freecs in korea. These teams didn't even look good against their counterparts in Korea. I remember season 3, 4 and 5 where most of the teams looked like they could actually throw some heat all the way down to the fucking greenwings, bless their souls. But since the yearly korean exodus went fully underway it just has not looked like that. You couldn't even pass off as a joke "DRX could win LEC" or APK last year, like you could back when LCK was actually the de facto best region. Damwon's looked like they could be a world beater since that lineup came together, but have any of these other rosters? Really? I wouldn't even bet on Geng to win LCS finals, let alone a full series against any competent team.
@@Slimcognito2012 or maybe all the lpl teams underperform, maybe all the lck teams get destroyed, you don't know what could or could not happen in bo5 on stage based on previous stats, you can make an educated guess yes, but nobody believed fpx and lng would suck this hard
@@abirmahmud2242 My point was, I don't have faith in the vast majority of teams outside of the top 3 teams of the LCK to perform up to their LPL counterparts if enough games were played. Sure, we do a crappy event like worlds and introduce a bunch of randomness, yeah maybe two LPL teams underperform and two LCK teams overperform. If enough games were played, on a stable patch, there's just no fucken competition. It's crazy to judge the overall strength of a roster or region based on a single tournament against a couple of teams, when only one set of b05's have been played. T1 has only played chovy life in a best of 5, Geng has only played Mad lions, LNG and FPX didn't even get to play a b05, Half the LPL aren't even allowed to be at the tournament. We haven't seen GenG play a best of 5 against a single chinese team yet, nor T1 nor Damwon. I'm not talking about the strength of these regions across a single patch or tournament, I'm talking about the strength of the entire region of the LCK vs the entire region of the LPL across a whole year. And unfortunately, the only decent sample size we have is regional play, where, might I add, Nongshim tied geng in second place for summer split perfomance in LCK. Think of it this way, before worlds, if you were told to run a massive b05 invitational event with the best teams in the world, who do you invite besides T1, Damwon and Geng from LCK? Who's even worth considering? I can think of 6-8 LPL teams worth considering, but only as many teams from LCK as I'd consider inviting from LEC. Just like Europe can't just be judged on the performance of G2 from the last 2 years, you can't judge the entirety of the LCK based on the performance of T1, Damwon, and Geng in a single tournament. That's fucking lunacy. Most of these LCK teams are at best, two good players saddled with a bunch of corpses. It's fucken depressing to watch Kiin and Summit and Chovy spend the best years of their careers saddled with a buncha check stealers and deft having a resurgence with 3 dead weights. It's hard to support the overall LCK as being strong when that's the status of things. The only hope is that half these teams get blown up, some talent comes back from china and like 5-6 actually good LCK teams are formed, instead of geng being a wall between the top two teams of LCK and everyone else.
Another fun episode, on another note it is so cringe how some people are so obsessed with hating Thorin they post the same comment on every piece of content of his that is posted to reddit
although the chances are 25% for edg to win worlds, it's still only 2 games for edg and 1 game for LCK. cus edg needs to win the semis and the finals. the koreans just need to win the finals ( cus regardless who wins btwn korean vs korean match, a korean team is movin to finals) put in that context, it's not a "difficult" task. winning 2 games vs 1 . so dont beat urself up for season 8. wasnt that much of a surprise, really.
right didn't FNC win against IG when no one else won against IG and against FPX (at least 1 game) when no one won against FPX and even G2 was tilted by FPX just from scrims? So it might have been only 2 teams but at least it was 2 teams and not just 1! :D and I am sure with Upset they had a good chance of getting out of the group this year too. Not saying they would win against Damwon (they wouldn't) but at least it would have been 2 out of 3 teams of EU again out of groups. Realistically that was probably the ceiling this year
Riot won't change the worlds format because then western teams will make even less money from it. EU/NA benefits from 5-8th place getting the same cash prize. Cloud9 and RNG got the same cash prize from this tournament for example. :^] In all honesty though I would LOVE to see double elimination brackets, you guys are 100% right.
so lowkey, I'm a layman and haven't done my research on this, but I suppose as someone on the outside looking in, you'd expect teams to place higher than 5th to make more money right? I'm just curious, but why would EU/NA benefit more from finishing lower? Edit: also in favor of double elim, we need more EU vs NA matches :)
@@cr4ck_m4g1c I'm not sure what you're asking, sorry. Also, don't take my comment seriously, it was troll. My point though, was that currently since there are ties for numerous placements that don't get resolved. So Riot gives the same prize money to 5th place as they do to 8th place. If the format changed in a way that actually determined final placements, the prize money allocations would be justifiably shifted to be increasing with each one so that no teams in the bracket stage got the same prize money. Hence, western teams make more money now than they would if some of that was reallocated towards higher placing teams. It wouldn't be a huge difference and it is in no way an actual con to switching the format, just tongue in cheek.
@@Haedrix word word, hadn’t thought about it that way, I was coming at it from like a soccer/football perspective, and the way prize moneys distributed there is a little nuanced around whether or not a club qualifies for a Champions League spot vs a Europa League spot, etc etc, but thanks for the insight 👌
Hey Monte, been a fan of you since OGN times. I know you have always desired double-elimination, but what would you suggest to solve the 2021 FPX problem where they the finals was not favorable for the winner's bracket at all? I know that traditional double-elimination finals usually compose of two Bo series (with winner's bracket having one more chance to lose a series), but I never find those finals format fun because it then never feels like a single showdown from even grounds. But if you try to force a single showdown out of double-elimination stage, the 2021 FPX problem occurs. What would you suggest for double-elimination format to have a fair but fun finals? I can't think of any good ideas, so I usually end up disagreeing with the double-elimination format.
You could do a Best of 7 but the team coming from winner's bracket starts with a free win. So winner's side has to win 3 games before loser's side wins 4.
Anyone have a link to the Kkokkalkon & OGN collaboration I genuinely cannot find the clip that monte was referencing. Those cultural faux pas sounded so wacky

i get the single elim bracket thing for worlds. its easier to hype up for the mass and also with double elim you always have to ask yourself why its worth more when a team wins a second time than that they lost the first time. like 100t in na who lost against tl and then beat them. there is no 3rd match to decide which feels kinda weird. But if they keep single elim i want more international turnaments to show all the others matchups and also make groups better and change the fucking bracket formation. it cant be that we always get the main final in the semis. i dont think we should see a bo5 between na and eu at worlds just cause we want it if they arent good enough. But pls for the love of whatever you believe in, cut a split and make some majors or something in between idfk
Damn Monte is very right... I didn't realize it before. Riot most likely won't give co-stream rights to Monte and Doa casting (for example). Personally, I'd watch that any day and even subscribe... I even thought the MAD vs DK had underwhelming casting. So many hype moments from DW's team fights and playmaking and they barely made it exciting because they were inhaling too much EU copium rooting for MAD..
I think yes double Elimination is cool but Single elim is whatever. Like football has Single elim one bracket and it is like this forever. Yes sometimes not the "best" team wins but thats the best Part about a Underdog Story like Portugal won european championship. If you want double elim you can almost never have a Underdog Story like that.
What about G2 in the 2020 Summer playoffs? They lose to Fnatic in winner's finals, had an extremely close 3-2 win against Rogue in loser's finals, and then finally come back to win the tournament against the team that just knocked them down. The double elim made a much more interesting storyline. And, it helped to make sure the best team at the time won the tournament.
@@arthurbarelli3315 isnt that what i am saying. Double elim pros are giving consistency+ highly like to get the best team out of it. The pros for Single elim is that there is abig possibility for upsets
For one, football is "BO1s" because it's 90+ minutes of physically demanding play. Just think how stupid it would be if players were forced to play BO3 or BO5 90-min games. And FYI, 2 of the last 3 DoTA TI winners were underdogs including this year's winner (Team Spirit). OG, which won TI8 (and TI9), was ranked dead last (18th of 18 teams) before eventually winning the Aegis.
@@fnfal6286 Yes, I see that. I just remember a really big upset/underdog narrative around G2 and of they could come back and win or would Fnatic stay on top. And I feel like those interesting narratives "oh, X team was beat early in the tournament but they've made their way back" or "that started in the lower bracket and made the run all the way to the finals" can only happen in double elim. It makes the underdog story. Like, I get that it's easier for an underdog to win it all but also the argument is that the single elim tournament isn't the best at deciding who is the best team.

I mean do we say that damwon really had a harder groups with c9, rogue, and fpx? On paper yah fpx came in as favorites, but they were the worse performing team in the whole tournament. C9 and rogue both not even close to being better than edg, and 100t is basically the same as c9 in my eyes. I also think HLE was a better team than mad, so idk i think DK is being a little too over favored when they almost to mad and rogue
I cant believe you guys found perkz to be worth his value. I guess it supposes you are not (or are?) considering the buyout cost, but to say he's three times better than any other mid laner in LCS is really surprising. I dont think they played particularly well at worlds even, the fact they got out of their group wasn't as much a testament to cloud9s ability as a complete meltdown from fpx imo.
About Fnatic Soaz and Fnatic Adam They can pay peanuts to Adam and he will be cool, Soaz won’t accept peanuts. Thus the suits go with young adam, probably.
Soaz can’t not accept low pay if actually wants in the LEC. The last anyone saw of him was him looking terrible on IMT and that was over a year ago now. His perceived value isn’t high at all and he should know that.
To me, my favorite under-appreciated moment in eSports is DeParture win on ProLeague over Hero in 2015. Even the casters were talking shit on how much impossible it was. I don't think Korea has MASSIVELY over performed.. DK were always one of the best teams and have performed as such.. T1 look stronger then expected.. but are still 1-1 vs EDG AND the only beat HLE.. HLE probably wouldn't have even been in quarters if FNC had their whole team.. and GENG for sure have gone further then expected.. but that's more down to the draw.. I don't think they are playing much better then they did in LCK.. average in groups.. and not great vs C9.. C9 are just bad and threw 2 games
Path of Exile did BR mode for April fools and it was a blast. They did it twice now. They also bring back this mode with some adjustments from time to time as a limited mode. Its good. Meanwhile Battlerite had a fine start, but BR madness took over and they did a completly separated game with separated price called Battlerite Royale, it was popular for like a month tops and after that it wasn't possible to find a match there ever again. Its bad. So what i'm saying is any big game can integrate BR in some way if they want to. Look at CS:GO for example, as far as i know CS BR works and plays just fine even now. BR mode in league is just a question for Riot if they want it there or not. And for Valve i think you can play custom maps and i'm certain there is a BR map already.

Monte should have never left League and carried Overwatch with Doa. I still go back n watch old OGN/LCK matches because they made that shit sooo entertaining.

Its wild how much faker has adjusted over his career. I dont think anyone would say he's the best mid anymore, but something he does better than anyone is adapt to changes. He went from the solo kill monster who just bodied people on assassins, to being a control mage player, to playing support mids like lulu, and had made it look relatively easy. I dont know many players who have adjusted so well to different play styles over a career.
and every single fucking time, the world had to stop and take notes because he was miles ahead of everyone.

LCK is stronger because:

Gen Geee
This way instead of 'maybe' winning the mid-lane match-up, you most certainly win the game by out-macroing the opposing mid laner.
thoorin is really in forme in the recent episodes their back in their mojo and it shows. Can't wait to see what these guys do in the future.

I feel like Showmaker does the same thing which is why I feel he’s the best player in the world or ever.

To be fair, worlds is not the best metric for this. Damwon is undefeated, but SKT-EDG and GenG-LNG went 1-1. RNG was 2-1 against HLE.

Dagda: I cover LPL so I'm kind of obligated to go with EDG. But really, I think LCK is gonna fuck everyone.

Cloud 9 was very disappointing :( After game one you could tell it was over, Fudge stormed off and just looked tilted, the only one keeping his head up was Perkz. Even though really they should've won 2 out of 3 of those games, pretty sad
Clown9.
🤡
Still bitter OMG got RNG in brackets in both S3 and S4 they were hands down the second best team in the world in season 3 and in season 4 only the SSB/SSW were better. SADGE the games history is ruined by shitty formats.. why are tourneys from the season 2 era still more memorable than most worlds...
NaNiwa vs. HyuN

Ls has said that max cant be in call when c9 play
It's a joke how Bad this Format is there are 0 advantages of the current one
Dagda is full of copium HAHA
On another video coming into worlds some T1 fan said 2015 SKT was better than 2014 Samsung White because "MaRin was the best top lane in the world, and they won both splits of LCK" as if that was a valid argument so yeah idk where it comes from. He had a good worlds sure but he wasn't even the best top in Korea at the time, Smeb and Ssumday were better. I dont get it Monty please help the people out.
Tried to watch this worlds but the broadcast was just awful. i guess ive been out of the loop for 5 years or so but it was unwatchable
lol perks boo boo(not really). his team carried him. I think anyone could have filled mid this year.... Blabber and fudge carried the team. I dont think he deserve all the hate but you cant tell me he was worth all that money(barely made it out of groups). NA teams need to stop paying old greats, and actually teach these player easy things like rotation and not fucking walking over wards and shit.
NA has loser mentally, because we have great players, they just choke and always tend to throw MID game, just because of name plate (main problem for NA and EU)
NA 3rd seed coming from Playins getting out of the group of death thanks to Perkz solo stomping the tie breaker with LB doing 45% of the teams damage. What are you smoking dude
It's not that perkz was bad, it's that you don't have to spend 11million to get out of groups, or you shouldn't have to
I feel bad for blaber because he will likely never escape the memes even tho he's actually really good
@@emceemikey Considering NA cant get out of groups to save their lifed apperently you do have to spend 11mil. Imagine spending more on SwordArt and not even make Worlds
@@Nebrophonus93 he only made out of groups due to fpx underperforming, it was more luck than anything else, tl or 100t would've made it out too if they were in this group
Guess it was just luck what perkz did game 5 to beat TL in spring. Was just luck he hard stepped up in tie breaker vs rogue, just luck he won 8 LECs and 3 worlds semi's. Meanwhile TSM misses a whole season of international play spending over 5m on a single player.
Kappa
india barely has any PC usage, think theyve got quite a few decades ahead of em before they can start to think of esports lol
Koreans are just better at video games like black people are better at sports stop blaming practice region etc. doesnt make them better humans just better in certain things in life whites are better at alot of things asians arent doesnt make them better blacks are better in sports deosnt make them better humans. Stop making excuses and just say there better. How many western players play in china or korea? how many chinese play on a korean team. how many koreans play in other regions. Says it all right there.
Wow, LS really does live rent-free in Thorins head doesn't he?
No matter what the topic is, Thorin has to mention something LS said or tweeted or has done sometime in the past, even if it has no relevant relation to the currently talked about topic... xD
Btw the tweets with LS and IWD were something that is generally called "shittalk" or "joke" and people in the internet do it all the time because it is funny and entertaining...
Why is that so relevant to Thorin, that he has to mention it in this situation? Is it really necessary, just to drop LS's name one more time in a completely unrelated and irrelevant manner to put LS in a bad spot?
So pathetic honestly...
i mean i'm not a fan of either of them but shit talking LS is kinda funny since he badmouths every player and org he does not like personally, for example, he says lpl is trash even when he hadn't watched any lpl games over the split, very uninformative. So hating on this guy is kinda cathartic
Because mentioning LS gets views.
boho he is making fun of your favorite streamer wow tragedy has occurred.
I think its even more pathetic to wriete what u wrote.
@@Bogoos21 I dont care if its about LS or anyone else, it is a legit criticism of this Podcast, that for some reason or another Thorin permanently has to mention LS out of context to make him look bad in some way.
It's just not how an analytics based podcast should work and it is annoying to listen to Thorin whining about stuff that has no relation to the current discussion.
I like the podcasts narrative, but these little parts just are not necessary and disturb the flow and the entertainment.
By the way, it's called constructive criticism.
@@Chris951021 I guess people magically know that Thorin's gonna mention LS and that's why they click on the video then, correct?
