@The Dark Overlord I mean this in the nicest way possible. The thing is, I HAVE been doing stream highlight uploads. On this channel. For months. And many people, not just you, have either not noticed them or chosen not to watch them. So now what?
The whole game is excellent and I understand the ending....The ending that was correct..... The whole game is him writing his book and the reason that the ending is rewound is because he's stuck on it and trying to write it the best he can. You're the character in the book, you're in his world, and you are stuck in an ending that he can't decide on. Just like in his real life. Are you writing the book for your family or for yourself? What are your true motives? Who's well being is important? Is your father the REAL monster or are you? You chose right, John. The book wasn't important. Your family was/is.....
@@BrianQuest64 No, it's not. It's a selfish decision and in the "grand scheme of things" caring more about yourself than your duties as a parent and husband means less than your dreams of fame and fortune. If you really feel that way I pray you never start a family.
There's also no reason he couldn't have worked with his father and finished the book. The book was almost done, anyways. He just needed to polish it up and send it out. The game is a lesson. Sometimes, you're going to have to do the right thing, over your own wants and desires.
@@BrianQuest64 We have no idea what the father truly is like. Only the subjective opinions of a man who doesn't want a real job. The inter monologue of the character accusing him of only robbing out of selfish desire and not supporting his family with a real job is his own thoughts manifesting themselves with him and writing the book. A book means nothing if it comes first before your family. With medical and other bills piling up, the book isn't as important over duty and responsibly.
I completely disagree. The part at the end with the writer is great. The emotion the voice actor gives is incredible. You are essentially playing through his stories at the beginning. The narrator at one point earlier in the game said something along the lines that artists and writers write about themselves. The part with the child needing a heart during the cave portion, the idea of the thief needing to do one job to save his family. The drugs in the bathroom. Everything is brought into perspective once the writer drops the facade and begins to tell you everything up to this point was about him, his family and his life. I think this story was incredibly well written and the voice actor did a hell of a job emoting. I get we see meta-writing and 4th wall breaks a lot. But when done well it is incredibly engaging. The part in the demon section when the walls are closing in. How the thief feels trapped parallels with the writer feeling trapped by bills and having to rely on his abusive father to save his son. Basically making a deal with the devil to save his family. The bills lining the walls was such a cool visual. The only downside I have with the game is the use of pre-bought assets. If it used original assets it would have enhanced it. When you see the same house from House Party and other horror games it distracts from the game. Him using a rotary phone, when was the last time anyone used one of those? The 80s? It's little things but I actually liked this a lot. It gives you varying routes and choices you can make including just leaving at the start.
The moment I saw the rabbit in the beginning that I also saw in House flipper, I felt disappointed. It's totally fine to use those assets but I agree it does take you out of the experience a little. It was a surprisingly good game though, I really enjoyed it ^^ Just would have been extra great if everything was unique haha
I agree that the voice acting was fantastic throughout, the guy really made the game. Horror really starves for likeable characters who feel real and are entertaining. But the ending was just "it was all a dream" trussed up in fancy metaphorical packaging. I wonder if that's part of why psychological horror falls flat for John, too, if he's anything like me - I want the blood and death to be at least a little real in my horror, not entirely in somebody's head and we only find out when we've wasted our time reacting to what turns out to be nothing. The approach can be very clever, like this one was, but all that cleverness sucks the fun right out of the basic thrill of running from monsters.
Am I crazy, or is John actually enjoying an indie horror game Edit: it’s so nice to see John actually enjoy a game. He seemed way more into it, and in turn it made me enjoy the video more. Hope he gets some more gems like this. (:
I think the 4-jeweled door implies that the endings before that one were the "stories" written by Mist. He wasn't able to decide which ending was the best. This is evidenced as well by Mist saying if the demon one was a "good ending." In the end, he chose his family and decided not to end the story. Pretty neat since it all connects very well.

If that opening was a FNAF reference, it was pretty cute. I also gotta say, I'm a much bigger fan of "audio companion becomes corrupted" than " "one million journal pages" when it comes to progressing the narrative in horror games.
I just watched Kravin's play through of this last night I still feel like this is how layers of feels should have been, going through having full freedom and gameplay like this is so awesome and gives such a fun way to tell the story
I get the ending. I'm 35 and still terrified of my mother. As soon as I turned 18 I refused to ask her for anything because I didn't want to feel like I owed her anything. I can see that it would be confusing to most people though.
the voice actor was really good during the gas mask dude's section you could really feel the sense of urgency in his tone, and with the gameplay being a bit slow there it kind of balanced it out and made it feel very real? i enjoyed it a lot :-) weird how his accent shifts from american to english to scots to irish so much, i cant keep up lmao
So I watched a serious walkthrough of this game before I watched yours and I wanted to know what would happen if things weren't done as directed by the voice in his head so I knew to come to you for a satirical walkthrough. And my god I was not disappointed😂 This is basically 'The Stanley Parable' on steroids X 'Black Mirror' watching you play and commentate and I'm 100% here for it
We live in a construct erected by generations of people before us. The building can lift us up and make us feel comfortable. But it can also limit our imagination and keep us trapped. Sometimes it would be better to step outside the house, forget everything we know and build something of our own. That's the reason why foreign horror games in particular can be so fascinating and feel so fresh. They have not internalized the tropes and formulae that we associate with the genrw.
I dunno I really liked it. I think the ending is kinda sad, going back to work for his physically abusive father is sad but understandable given the circumstances, with that sad he won't have to stop writing persay, it would just slow way down. As for the gameplay, really cool idea. I really enjoyed it.
I think that final ending was actually pretty cool. The thief you were playing as was nothing more then a character in one of the many stories the writer/narrator has penned up and then we get to see behind the facade and what was really going on with the narrator.
I think I really enjoyed this one. The 3/4 different stories suddenly rewinding to the end seemed like the narrator/author was trying to guide his main character along a different story each time as he may or may not have liked the way the previous went, etc. Basically as if he were trashing his old work and restarting while using the previous entries as inspiration as he desperately tried to think of a good story in order to sell and save his son.
Bizarrely I think the final twist kinda works, story wise anyway, like I could see this entire game being written starting as a single story written by some guy just trying his best, I could even see it evolving into a full blown libel series with all the individual “sections” being novels about different characters in the house, with the first twist being the ending of the series. Prolly putting more thought into this then I should...
Drug Attic is kinda cute - like "I'm on so many meds, they need their OWN room." :D I've seen the common "for all intensive porpoises" popping out of Auto-Correct craziness.
I'm halfway through and I think it's pretty cool so far. I like the rewinding thing, and that you get to explore the whole house. Glad you went against the "headset guy's" wishes here and there, it's funny to hear what he says. :D
Wow, this game was such a pleasant surprise. I loved the different stories, and how they all made sense at the end. Also, the voice actor did a great job, and it really shows how much good voice acting can improve a game. The only detail I might point out is that the first monster appeared to be of less quality than the rest of the assets. But that's not a big issue, especially if we take into account how the dev has improved heaps!
I kinda wish you'd do more of the 'Still Scary' series, I might have missed something about why you stopped, but there are some old games I wish I could see again, like Ib, and The Witch's House, though I understand that they are way longer than the games you played for that series, like Slender and Ao Oni, but I really enjoyed the old RPG maker horror games, again, it makes sense to not play them, but I can still hope.
He won't be (re) playing rpg maker games like Ib sadly, he said so on stream, too bad he doesn't seem to like those kind of games now even tho I found his channel thanks to The Witch's house playthrough
I wonder what if the other final ending made more sense than the one where you stay with the wife. I'm assuming that's the family that died in the fire? I don't know though. I also wonder if the entire game would be different if John didn't cut the wrong wire. THAT would be awesome, what he played through itself being a path based on that choice at the beginning.
TH-cam is the only social media I use, so guess I'm dead to him too. No worries though; I still enjoy his content and hopefully he gets the ad revenue.
My dumbass managed to sprain both of my ankles last night. So an hour long video when you can’t walk, and you’re stuck sitting/laying around, is a blessing. 😭🖤
I thought it was betrayal at house on the hill the video game but it was a driven narrative. Like, mixed with Stanely's Parable. It could have been... better. Not that I can make anything myself. Thanks for playing and editing!
Lately I've been trying to sleep earlier than 4/5am. It's hard. Nothing seems to be working except when I watch horror walkthroughs. Not just any horror walkthrough though, I think it's John's voice. So John playing horror is my current lullaby. 🤔
i have to say, this game has a lot going for it. even though some jumpscares were telegraphed a mile away, there were some that were actually well done the mechanics (mostly: the camera) are employed for what they're worth, but removed before they get stale (a big plus with this anthology-style) the ending is "bad" in a sense that it's been overused... on the other hand, it's hard to find anything that hits as hard as "i've killed people, they were my family, and my dog as well" *angry john wick noises* the only other way i really see this working would be a betrayal story... but any character that builds up a lot of trust with the player is telegraphed to be a traitor, so that wouldn't work either
For every chest set I've played with, the queen has always been taller. So like two unique chess sets, one of those plastic walmart kinds and internet chess. But yeah.
I think this is well above average. John deliberately took the "Okay, I don't care" approach which is an easy way to dismiss the message. I'm going to look deeper into this game and the dev's other works
John’s reactions read like in-character responses from an experienced monster hunter who knew this house had something weird in it and hopped on the job to sus it out and has muted himself so the chair guy can’t hear his sassy commentary
Yoo John skipped the first part and went through the third just like that lmaooo. I also laughed how he cut the wrong wire. I have yet to see his reaction later on about the wire he purposely cut to get in the house lolol

If that opening was a FNAF reference, it was pretty cute. I also gotta say, I'm a much bigger fan of "audio companion becomes corrupted" than " "one million journal pages" when it comes to progressing the narrative in horror games.
Honestly same. Maybe I’m just a lazy sack of shit but I’m tired of having to read seven thousand things when I go through a horror game
I just watched Kravin's play through of this last night
I still feel like this is how layers of feels should have been, going through having full freedom and gameplay like this is so awesome and gives such a fun way to tell the story
I get the ending. I'm 35 and still terrified of my mother. As soon as I turned 18 I refused to ask her for anything because I didn't want to feel like I owed her anything. I can see that it would be confusing to most people though.
the voice actor was really good during the gas mask dude's section
you could really feel the sense of urgency in his tone, and with the gameplay being a bit slow there it kind of balanced it out and made it feel very real? i enjoyed it a lot :-)
weird how his accent shifts from american to english to scots to irish so much, i cant keep up lmao
The VA is Irish. (I bugged the hell out of me about his accent, so I had to search him up. Alexander Hanly is the VA's name.)
John: "You don't watch my streams or follow me on social media, so you're dead to me"
Me: ;_;
So I watched a serious walkthrough of this game before I watched yours and I wanted to know what would happen if things weren't done as directed by the voice in his head so I knew to come to you for a satirical walkthrough. And my god I was not disappointed😂 This is basically 'The Stanley Parable' on steroids X 'Black Mirror' watching you play and commentate and I'm 100% here for it
29:58 John gets scared by a jump scare! Monumental moment right here!
The visuals in this game are actually very pretty, if somewhat generic.
I dunno I really liked it. I think the ending is kinda sad, going back to work for his physically abusive father is sad but understandable given the circumstances, with that sad he won't have to stop writing persay, it would just slow way down.
As for the gameplay, really cool idea. I really enjoyed it.
The way John talks about houses and HGTV It feels like John’s gonna get bored of games and become a real estate agent like Seananners did.
John's content is the best content.
Imagine gaslighting the man going crazy in the beginning like "who lit all these candles...." "oh i did it while you werent looking."
I think that final ending was actually pretty cool. The thief you were playing as was nothing more then a character in one of the many stories the writer/narrator has penned up and then we get to see behind the facade and what was really going on with the narrator.
"You said there's no knife, right? But I kinda cut you off when I opened up the refrigerator." XD
I love that he just absolutely refused to cut the blue wire every time, hahaha
I think I really enjoyed this one. The 3/4 different stories suddenly rewinding to the end seemed like the narrator/author was trying to guide his main character along a different story each time as he may or may not have liked the way the previous went, etc. Basically as if he were trashing his old work and restarting while using the previous entries as inspiration as he desperately tried to think of a good story in order to sell and save his son.
When John said "you people who don't watch my streams or see my social media, you're dead to me"
I felt...attacked...I'm sorry John :'(
It's always a treat to see John get pleasantly surprised by a game (like with the rewind thing at the beginning) it doesn't happen often anymore LOL
Drug Attic is kinda cute - like "I'm on so many meds, they need their OWN room." :D
I've seen the common "for all intensive porpoises" popping out of Auto-Correct craziness.
This makes me think of the Stanley Parable game, but if it were a horror game.
The whimpering dogs made my Great Dane sit up and watch the rest of the video with me. Lol
" I hate games where all you do is take pictures"
Starts taking pictures of everything
I'm halfway through and I think it's pretty cool so far. I like the rewinding thing, and that you get to explore the whole house. Glad you went against the "headset guy's" wishes here and there, it's funny to hear what he says. :D
4:06 this has "Dude Stop" energy
This is the earliest I've been to any video omg
I’d really like John to make a series where he plays Disco Elysium
Wow, this game was such a pleasant surprise. I loved the different stories, and how they all made sense at the end.
Also, the voice actor did a great job, and it really shows how much good voice acting can improve a game.
The only detail I might point out is that the first monster appeared to be of less quality than the rest of the assets. But that's not a big issue, especially if we take into account how the dev has improved heaps!
My new favorite thing about John is that he looks at houses on Zillow for fun, haha.
Love all the videos man!!
He won't be (re) playing rpg maker games like Ib sadly, he said so on stream, too bad he doesn't seem to like those kind of games now even tho I found his channel thanks to The Witch's house playthrough
john was able to manipulate the story on the first stolen object?? there was so much change in comparison to the other video i watched
I was screaming at my screen “ITS A BISHOP NOT A KING” 😂
Each loop is the character rolling back his writting and doing it all over again for a new book.
I wonder what if the other final ending made more sense than the one where you stay with the wife. I'm assuming that's the family that died in the fire? I don't know though. I also wonder if the entire game would be different if John didn't cut the wrong wire. THAT would be awesome, what he played through itself being a path based on that choice at the beginning.
there never was a blue wire.
The twist was that John actually liked and enjoyed the game for the most part.
"we're in a closet!" me too John, me too...
just wanted to say, love your vids John and hope you carry on with this keep up good work can't wait till next one mate. 👍🏻
I love how in the fourth section, the assistant voice starts to go breaking the fourth wall.
@john_wolfe you should try "No one lives under the lighthouse",it's a short but pretty good horror game
oooh, the name is interesting!! I think I should check it out too, ty (even if I’m not John LOL)
Ahh, loved that game so much
I guess I'm dead to you John. After all these years 😢
Jokes on him, I’ve been dead for years.......wait-
TH-cam is the only social media I use, so guess I'm dead to him too. No worries though; I still enjoy his content and hopefully he gets the ad revenue.
He probably would've said something like "just kidding" later, but my guess is the narrator cut him off
@@livelybubbs6242 same dude :)
@@randomstuff-qu7sh he's not serious you know
My dumbass managed to sprain both of my ankles last night. So an hour long video when you can’t walk, and you’re stuck sitting/laying around, is a blessing. 😭🖤
I'm thinking about admiring John in a non-creepy, self-improving way too.
20:14 Literally my first thought was "Eat it." XD
I thought it was betrayal at house on the hill the video game but it was a driven narrative. Like, mixed with Stanely's Parable. It could have been... better. Not that I can make anything myself. Thanks for playing and editing!
Lately I've been trying to sleep earlier than 4/5am. It's hard. Nothing seems to be working except when I watch horror walkthroughs. Not just any horror walkthrough though, I think it's John's voice. So John playing horror is my current lullaby. 🤔
ooooo somebody played cry of fear
and that could not make me happier to see
i have to say, this game has a lot going for it. even though some jumpscares were telegraphed a mile away, there were some that were actually well done
the mechanics (mostly: the camera) are employed for what they're worth, but removed before they get stale (a big plus with this anthology-style)
the ending is "bad" in a sense that it's been overused... on the other hand, it's hard to find anything that hits as hard as "i've killed people, they were my family, and my dog as well" *angry john wick noises*
the only other way i really see this working would be a betrayal story... but any character that builds up a lot of trust with the player is telegraphed to be a traitor, so that wouldn't work either
For every chest set I've played with, the queen has always been taller.
So like two unique chess sets, one of those plastic walmart kinds and internet chess. But yeah.
Traditionally, the King is always the tallest piece. In fact, chess sets are often classified by the King height.
Chest set? 🤔
Nice
Maybe they made the Queen taller bc she's more useful than the King, even tho the King is more important
@@auqustfire maybe she's just wearing a big hat
We stan our queen
1:07:28 This is a prefab room model 100%. The same room is used in a game called House Party.
"We're...fine"
Turns around
"Oh"
The queen is always bigger than the king piece.
36:20 This whole sequence is ripped straight out of Cry of Fear. Was giving it the benefit of the doubt until they used the exact same jumpscare too.
I think this is well above average. John deliberately took the "Okay, I don't care" approach which is an easy way to dismiss the message. I'm going to look deeper into this game and the dev's other works
I was waiting for an "I urge you to think critically" at the end. di-sa-PPOINTEEED
Thank you John! Stay healthy and safe!
John’s reactions read like in-character responses from an experienced monster hunter who knew this house had something weird in it and hopped on the job to sus it out and has muted himself so the chair guy can’t hear his sassy commentary
Hi John! I've had a rough week, thanks for this!
Yoo John skipped the first part and went through the third just like that lmaooo. I also laughed how he cut the wrong wire. I have yet to see his reaction later on about the wire he purposely cut to get in the house lolol
"WHO LIGHTS THESE CANDLES?" A very good question.
11:17 .When I see the holes my mind goes everywhere
