    Follia - Dear Father is a stealth survival horror game that takes place on a university. Marcus searches for his parents, but instead finds himself in some STICKY SITUATIONS. I basically took that description from the Steam page, but added the phrase "sticky situations" because I thought it really captured the feel of the game.

    The loading screen door in Resident Evil works for three reasons:
    1. It's the loading screen.
    2. It intuitively flows from you actually opening a door to you entering the room after it.
    3. The act of opening a door is terrifying.
    None of the three apply to this game. You were in a friggin' car and it shows a door opening.

    So many horror games have no concept of restraint. Let's say you see a scene of impossible violence within the first ten minutes. Bodies strung up, impaled or crucified, disemboweled and painting the room with their insides. Dead fetuses on the ground. Walls of gore. At that point, how do you possibly ramp up? You can't go MORE extreme than that, you've already reached the ceiling in the first ten minutes. There's nowhere to go from there.
    It felt like every single room in this game was trying for a scene of unimaginable gore and it got desensitizing maybe within the third instance. It was such unimaginative, empty shlock. Edginess for its own sake.

    • @Yuu-pn9dg
      @Yuu-pn9dg 4 ปีที่แล้ว +99

      THAT part! The developer(s) did way too much. To the point where it made little to no sense. Many of the rooms were just dedicated to this type of scene rather than adding any actual substance to the game.

      @kingsnothere8075 4 ปีที่แล้ว +39

  • @westingtyler1
    @westingtyler1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +285

    2:00:00 yeah. when the dev kills the player, that actually RELIEVES tension. killing the player in a horror game is actually being nice to them and letting them relax. it's like Hitchcock said "if there's a bomb under the table and it goes off, it's action. if we know it's under there and that it WILL go off later, that's tension." as a horror dev, you gotta ride the line of tension to keep the player tense. just killing them all the time is action and misses the point. you want the player to be constantly bracing for something bad to happen, but it doesn't. imo if you do it right, the player feels dumb at the end of the situation for being so tense, when in reality you manipulated them to feel that intentionally. any horror game where it's like "SAFE or DEAD", in that binary setup, misses the grey middle area called TENSION, where the player may or may not be safe but doesn't know for sure. the ideal is SAFE|UNCERTAINTY|DEATH. that spectrum.

    • @524mills
      @524mills 4 ปีที่แล้ว +37

      This reminds me a bit of what Valve said regarding the design of the horror chapter in Half Life: Alyx. Basically, they saw that players only found being killed by the monster scary the first time or two. After that, they just got frustrated. But what consistently kept players scared was perceived near-death situations. Situations where players felt like they were within seconds of dying, even if mechanically, they actually weren't in much danger at all. Valve eventually chose to design the entire chapter around placing the player in those situations.
      By designing a chapter around those moments, instead of just siccing a Super Scary Monster on the player and killing them 50,000 times, Valve created what is probably the single greatest short horror experience the medium has ever seen.
      It makes sense for the reasons you've listed. Death in games is, with few exceptions, anti-immersion. Horror relies on players being *IN* the moment, with them forgetting on some level that they're sitting outside the game in the comfort of their own home. The more the player dies, the harder it becomes for them to get into that zone. Killing the player in horror games is, as you say, a release of tension. Developers need to stop treating it as a source of tension.

    • @nunpho
      @nunpho 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      You are both absolutely right, the creators of some of these games don't even realise that they need to build an immersive atmosphere.

      I think alien isolation is a good look into this concept, the alien is terrifying in that you know it's always there waiting for you to mess up, then when it drops and stalks you you know you have to try and deal with it, but once you're about to die the tension goes away almost immediately, as it's obvious it's going to come kill you. I've also been playing the game recently so I have it fresher on my mind but the way they make the alien ai work in that game is near perfect for a spooky monster chasing you

    • @Jonianer
      @Jonianer 4 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Very well said to all of you. I instantly had to think of Subnautica. While not purely or even primarily a horror game, it has some of the most butt clenching moments for me (to be fair - I can mostly watch horror games than play them). But the fact that there could always be another sea creature, that you may have not seen yet and you dont know how it acts is the actual horror part. I was scared of reapers in this game for hours with a total of maybe 2 or 3 minutes having an actual encounter with them in the whole playthrough. It was enough to hear them, sometimes see the sillhouette and knowing what they can do and that they are a constant threat - like you said: tention - exactly how it should be.

    • @huxleyable
      @huxleyable 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It also depends on what happens when you die. If it's just a checkpoint to a small, repetitive section or set piece that you have to do over and over again it gets boring. But in something like Alien Isolation or perhaps Five night's at freddy's where you have to go through a long, tense session again it's a lot scarier to die. You have a lot more to lose is what I mean.

    Hey John, Architectural engineer here, about the pipes (and vents...). I've never seen a configuration of pipes like that before. Also red pipes are usually used for water access to supress fires (stagnant water pipes, or dry ones) , but that makes this configuration even weirder. So yes, it doesn't seem to make any sense.
    About crawling through vents and stuff, that's never going to be a thing irl. They are way too small and they are among the most dusty places in a building along with a whole load of other shizzle that got into there. Also they're more likely to be round, since the ariflow is better than in a square one.

    Man, your sass never fails to crack me up. XD
    I agree it's too padding and mediocre. For the length of it, the devs should have explored more on character, story, relationship building to balance out instead of adding more maps and enemies that are not truly relevant. Like you've said, he had no connection with parents up until the end. The father's suicide is weird. He "cured" the mother of cancer, but he then took his life and left the son to make decision? He's so vague in saying he didn't have much time left. If he's also sick, why not taking the same "cure"? Not very logical.
    I think developing horror game has become increasingly hard, because gamers have seen most of these types of stories, mechanics, and have become so desensitized to gore and jump scare. The same for horror movies. Yet, many devs don't really get it that more of these are not the key to good games, because we have games like FNAF, RE, Silent Hill, or Outlast, etc. that are so successful. They don't realize that these games are not successful because of the cosmetic stuff, but because that they balance the atmosphere, accomplishment, and punishment extremely well, sometimes to the point of addiction. Plus, the story is very interesting despite that it's a typical story line that has been used over and over again. Additionally, having just a few but iconic enemies are more memorable and scary than having a truckload. Like Mr. X, he barely did anything more than stalking but gamers are anxious to the max once they heard his footsteps.

      Very true! Also, a lot of horror writing and media can often be hit-or-miss most of the time (especially since horror is one of the most personable feelings that people can have, so horror tends to be the kind of genre where, when something is made, not everyone is going to gravitate to it or agree to it being scary in an entertaining way, regardless on how successful it may be).

      Maybe an amusement park? Has been done but not effectively enough. A mall? A museum? A zoo/ circus? Just a hotel? The beach/an entire island (where it would make sense why you couldn't just leave.) A ski resort? A junkyard? A cruise ship/ train? (Done before, but not as frequently.) An entire camping resort? A trailer park? An entire haunted movie theater? Just a city rooftop setting where you can't get into buildings, needing to construct ways to get across? A funeral home, with graves & church out back? An airport? Botanical gardens?
      Maybe some real life places, like government buildings (white house), natural sites (grand canyon/ Niagara falls), or store models (Walmart)...
      I get it though. Mines, schools, hospitals, etc., seem to be naturally scary places when abandoned, but it gets old too. It would be nice to see some creative environments.

    29:22 as a unity dev, I'd say it's a problem with the lighting cookie image on the light (a greyscale .png image with a dark outside and a bright white middle, painted as you prefer). some setting like the bias or something is wrong, which can create weird artifacts outside the desired 'visible' section of the cookie. you can see similar artifacts as lines along the edge of a flashlight cookie image, if you don't set the import settings to "clamp" and leave it on repeat, or use the wrong filtering. or something. I dunno, I just try shit until that stuff disappears, and I could eliminate it in 3 minutes of tweaking, but I'm not sure the exact terminology.

    As John mentioned, I applaud the amount of work that was done by so few people. That being said, this could have really benefited from a more fleshed out story. Even if the character just talked to himself more about what he was doing along the way, so you didn't feel so much like "what are we doing here again? Oh right..." The story/concept itself was just too simple to make us feel attached at all and left us with too many questions. Like why did the drug do all this? Who were all these people? Why couldn't they be saved? Why couldn't dad leave with us? Why were we brought here? Why had no one else come to take care of this? Try to answer these and it all comes down to a very vague answer, the same vague answer really.

    That statement John made about the garbage monsters lol:
    _"Welcome to The Trash side..._
    _I hereby dub you..._
    _Darth... Dumpster._
    _You will be stronger than any garbage dump."_

    "Some of the tropes I don't appreciate, like constantly falling through the floor..." *falls through floor*
    Man, if it wasn't for your humor John, I wouldn't have been able to get through this. I agree the work that went into this game is admirable, but as a game it is not very good. Why people were saying "It's actually good, though" I have no clue.
