    • @syncmonism
      @syncmonism 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The only thing for near $50 that I know of which is any good is the Hyperkin HDMI adapter for Nintendo systems, and it's definitely not as good, and seems to have more issues with quality and sound with some units, though the one I have works fine, though I have little intention to actually use it anymore since a friend gave me an RGB modded N64 with a RAD2X to go with it.
      Unfortunately, there just aren't any really good low latency HDMI adapters for these older sub 480p consoles which aren't expensive. That being said, the Retrotink 2x mini with an S-video cable would be a much better option than the EON, and is still a lot cheaper, or at least it was when it was still in production and still easy to find. However, the 2x mini is itself still very expensive for what it does, especially because it doesn't have a component video input or any kind of RGB input. I think they went for around 70 or 80 USD plus shipping.
      The Retrotink 2X Classic for 100 USD (which does have component video inputs) was probably the best alternative to this, though you would also need a component cable to make the best use of it, and the Retrotink 2X Classic is also not available anymore, and has been replaced by the more expensive Retrotink 2X Pro, which is 140 USD plus shipping!
      An RGB modded N64 combined with the RAD2X Nintendo adapter (which uses Retrotink chips inside of it) is probably the best option for someone who's willing to pay good money, and I would highly recommend this over the EON 64. Once the RGB mod is done, it's just as simple to use as the EON 64, as there's no need for additional power cables, SCART cables, or component cables, and you'd be getting a better picture than the EON 64, and a superior deblur option as well. When used with the N64's RGB signal, the RAD2X gives you a similar quality of picture to using an HDMI mod, though there are far fewer features, unless you go with one of the more expensive RGB mods. The RAD2X will also still use a composite signal if there's no RGB signal available, and does a good job of that too. The RAD2X is 50 GBP plus shipping from the UK based online store which sells them (60 GBP including VAT for domestic customers).

    Personally I'm not a fan of smoothing. I love my pure pixels. Removing the smoothing was actually a special feature for Doom 64.

    • @syncmonism
      @syncmonism 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The RAD2X also has that feature, and will do a great job of converting an RGB signal when an RGB signal is present, such as with a modded N64, most versions of the snes, some stock PAL region versions of the Gamecube, and (obviously) RGB modded versions of the Gamecube. I think some people might even have them working with some RGB modded versions of the NES.

  • @Bonswally
    @Bonswally 3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    For those like me who think it's too expensive, you can get a rad2x cable which essentially does the same thing for less than half the price. No lag, region free, rgb support, no external power, works on n64, snes and gamecube.

    • @syncmonism
      @syncmonism 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, and you might be able to find an RGB modded N64 for not that much more than the cost of the EON, maybe even the same price, if you're lucky. If your N64 is compatible with the cheaper and easier to install RGB mod kits, it's considered easy enough that people with no soldering experience at all should be able to do it, as long as they follow instructions properly, and there are multiple tutorials online explaining how to do it. The mod kit itself is pretty cheap, like 20 USD plus shipping maybe?
      An RGB modded N64 and a RAD2X are going to hold their resale value better than an EON 64 will as well.
      Some consoles are not compatible with those RGB mod kits (you have to check what version of the system you have), but there are some more expensive mod kits which will work on any system, and some of those ones also have additional useful features.

  • @DeToxCommunity
    @DeToxCommunity 4 ปีที่แล้ว +13

    You need to compare this to the Retrotink-2x! It's a $100 generic line doubler that works with component, s-video, and composite devices, and outputs HDMI. It also includes a smoothing mode that looks great for N64 games.

    • @syncmonism
      @syncmonism 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That's definitely a better alternative. It's WAY more versatile. If nothing else, it will hold its resale value better. Sadly, the 2X Classic is out of production and not that easy to find. The 2X Pro seems to have replaced it, and is 140 USD plus shipping. It's basically the same except that it also has an optional scanline mode, and the unit itself has a better designed enclosure too I suppose.
      Arguably an even better alternative would be to RGB mod your N64, or just buy an RGB modded N64, and also a RAD2X, which will plug directly into an N64, and use the RGB signal if present (it will also do a good job of converting the composite signal if no RGB signal is present). You could probably find an RGB modded N64 for not that much more than the cost of the EON, then sell your unmodded N64, if you don't want to do the mod yourself.

      @@StreetfighterTips The Eon only uses S-video though, I believe. A RAD2X would be the best adapter for use with an RGB modded N64, and the cost of an RGB mod and a RAD2X would still be less than the price of the EON I think, though you'd still have to do the RGB mod yourself, which requires soldering tools, but apparently is easy enough that a beginner could do it.
      You could also just buy an RGB modded N64 and sell your old unmodified one. An RGB modded N64 might not cost any more than the cost of an EON and an Unmodified N64.

    I picked one of these up a few months ago and the picture quality is greatly sharper, cleaner and brighter with my setup than what's been translated on this video. It seems as though something got wack/lost with the capture. I already had a rad2X hooked up and it was close but wasn't as clean, and the big issue with me was the rad2X had more imput lag.

  • @railsrust
    @railsrust 4 ปีที่แล้ว +15

    Get a Retrotink and an S-Video cable. You'll basically get the same image quality, but you can also use the Retrotink on other consoles. Later you can RGB mod with the deblur function, and get more or less the best quality you can get out of the N64.

      * adds hdmi to vga adapter to the chain.

    • @syncmonism
      @syncmonism 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It will also just hold its value a lot better if you ever decide to sell it, precisely because of its versatility, and ability to work with component video. However, the 2X Classic is out of production and harder to find now, and has seemingly been replaced by the more expensive (but still very good) Retrotink 2X Pro.
      The RAD2X (Nintendo version) is less versatile, and doesn't support S-video, but would be potentially an even better option, as it has great image quality when using an RGB signal with an RGB modded N64, and because it plugs directly into Nintendo multi-out ports, it eliminates the need to get a component video cable, and is also significantly cheaper than the Retrotink 2X Pro.
      The RAD2X is also going to be a far superior option for use with a stock snes, because most versions of the snes will have an RGB signal, and some PAL region versions of the Gamecube also have RGB output as a standard feature, and the ones which don't can obviously also be RGB modded as well. The difference in quality with RGB vs. the other two analogue signals a snes can put out is also even bigger than the difference between the quality of the RGB signal on an N64 and the other two analogue signals that they can put out, making the RAD2X all the more valuable for use with a snes.

They're very nice guys and make great stuff. They were telling us all about the N64 one they were working on and had many GameCubes hooked up there with those HDMI adapters connected to them. Was cool seeing people compete in a Double Dash tournament against each other with those things hooked up. I even played Metroid Prime 1 with one of them. Yeah, retro emulators have been in development for over 20 years, they perform way better then the physical retro consoles themselves. Why use a physical retro console that did not age well, when you get can a way better gaming experience with an emulator.

    You should get you hands on an upscaler too, my brother got one and it's amazing. It messes with the colors a bit (if you've ever used a sharpness filter in a photo editor you have a decent idea what I'm talking about), so some tuning is needed, but the difference is night and day.

    Might be a bit late, but maybe you could review the Hyperkin Wii cable on HD virtual console (if you have the games, as the service shut down,) or HDMI on the Wii U's virtual console (service still up I think.)
    Emulators will always have the best quality, but it's interesting to explore your options. Rn I'm in love with the Wii Hyperkin cable for my vc, gamecube, and wii games. Looks really clean and runs on official hardware.

      I have the Hyperkin cable for the N64 and, it’s passable. It’s not upscaling the games though, so you’re getting a 720p signal, but the games are still running at 240p (480 on some games with the expansion pak). I think I want the true 480p upscaling 🤷🏻‍♂️

    I've had the OG version of the EON GameCube adapter. Recently discovered this for the n64.
    Jumped on it, without doing much research into other options.
    Despite how pricey this is, I feel you get what you pay for, if you want to hook up retro consoles to modern hd TV's. The cheaper hyperkin cables are just all around bad.
    I would honestly love have gone with the UltraHDMi mod, but at $400, the EON is honestly the next best option for hooking the N64 up via HDMI. Plug and play.

    Personally, if the HDMI adapter doesn't directly access the digital stream in the console, IOW if it is just a custom ADC, I don't want it. I've got a surround sound AVR with Faroudja DCDi for video ADC needs, like component cables + a TOSLINK cable to a Firewire equipped fat PS2.
    IOW figure out what the highest quality signal is that your console outputs and use that, or just do what everyone else I knew did and use the RF modulator on channel 3 and ONLY 3, never 4, even though in my case 3 was a local station that was so strong you got ghosting in the game image. Not kidding, I could not convince them to use 4 instead even when I showed them that 4 got rid of the ghosting.
    The only pro to the "Super 64" is that it is close-coupled to the console.
