      I'm betting money it's more an issue of when you're going to be playing N64 games on an HD TV. I recall playing Playstation games on my 1080p TV with AV inputs and it looked like garbage compared to how it looked on my old CRT TV. I haven't used the thing she is talking about but I'm sure it's just a device to help the N64 "adapt" to the TV you're trying to play it on.

  • @anthonywheeler2082

    it cost to much and from this video I really didn't see a difference. I stick to emulating the n64 on my iMac at 1080p until they come out with something similar to a 1080 video signal.

    • @yore5
      @yore5 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is for people who want to have the original experience on original hardware. No one is expecting to get 1080p on a 1996 console with an adapter. You just want a less blurry, more detailed picture.

  • @DarDarBinks1986
    @DarDarBinks1986 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    $150 is a bit much for an upscaler, even if it looks better than Hyperkin's cable. I saw MetalJesus's comparison video of both adapters and the UltraHDMI mod. Hyperkin's HDMI cable is too dark for something that covers the N64, Super NES, and GameCube. And when I say "too dark", I mean it DISPLAYS games too dark. Good luck playing Doom 64 with that shit even if you max out brightness in the Options menu. The other two solutions look better. MUCH FUCKING BETTER!
    Even in HDMI, the N64 still looks blobby as hell. This isn't the fault of the cable or adapter, but that of the console itself. Anti-aliasing will do that. Super Mario 64 looks better for a launch game thanks to the Gouraud shading. Quake 1 and 2 had the option to turn the AA off but why would I want to play watered-down ports of those when I already have the PC versions?

    • @CAPCOM784
      @CAPCOM784 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can use a gameshark for the anti-aliasing on the n64.

      @NPC #34254334 Response: I've upgraded my Genesis/32X, Saturn, PS2, Xbox, and Wii to YPbPr only. Ordered some cheap component cables for the Xbox and PS2; got the Wii covered with a 3-in-1 cable (also does PS3 and Xbox 360, which I don't have); and HD Retrovision's YPbPr cable for the Genesis. I have NOT looked back. Fuck composite! And RF? That shit is CANCER. NEVER USE RF OR COMPOSITE! If you have a very old console that only did RF and/or composite, get it modded ASAP.
      And note the nomenclature I used. S-Video, YPbPr, and RGB are technically ALL component video. "Component" just means that the pieces of video data are separated. Composite carries the color, sync, brightness, and contrast all on that yellow wire. Because of that, it looks like SHIT. Blurry text, bleeding pixels, TERRIBLE! S-Video was a good step up because it separated the color from everything else. YPbPr (the red, blue, and green component cables you find at Walmart) isn't true RGB, but close and delivers nigh-identical results. The red and blue cables carry the red and blue color data, but the green carries no color at all! That cable carries sync, contrast, and brightness. The TV uses these values to calculate green based on what it knows from the device. RGB? We didn't get that on our consumer TVs in America but Europe, Straya, and Kiwiland all did through SCART while Japan had the superficially identical (NOT the same!) JP-21. We only got RGB on computer monitors (via that blue VGA connector) and professional monitors.

    Great video again. While I'd love to jam all my NES, Super NES, N64, and my prize Sega Genesis. Yes I was a Genesis kid. I also had the TurboGrafx16. Bonks Revenge was awesome. I don't have many left. My N64 and Genesis are still good. I have my Sega Dreamcast and Saturn as well. I had plans of turning a room into a mega gaming center. 4-50" HDTV's for the X-Box, 360, and XBox One. Another set up for Playstation, PS2, PS3, and PS4.
    Goodwill has had really good older TV's for a cheap price. They had a 19" for $15-20. Right now they have a 25" and 27" for somewhere between $30-$50. Get say 2 or 3 25" or 27" older TV's and your RETRO systems are up and jammin. Heck even just one 27" would work with some adapters for the back. I appreciate the info on any new technology. At least this is connected to the system and not an emulator. Becoming terminally ill wasn't on my agenda, so my huge plans have become small hopes. But never give up, never surrender as Jason Nesmith says in Galaxy Quest. I have loved gaming since I plugged in a Pong machine to a 13" B&W TV when I was like 5...lol. But EVERYTHING changed when I got my Atari 2600. Again I was a little kid who loved playing these games. Now of course they look primitive but they had and STILL HAVE a charm about them. I remember being allowed to take a bus alone, well me and my buddy without a adult. I saved up my paper route money for Donkey Kong for the 2600. It didn't look like the arcade version. That version had the color and the power. The Atari well, it had my home. I could play DK at home. Pac-Man looked like a odd duck eating wafers, but I loved it. E.T.......um......ah..........
    I'll pass on that one. It was okay I guess but it irked the sh*t outta me.

    A Retrotink does the exact same thing for $50 less and can hook up to multiple game consoles via composite, s-video, and component. $150 is a ripoff and everyone knows it. This thing should be no more than $50.

    Damn that looks awesome. The video compression isn't doing this any favors, but the smoothing option looks great. People tend to forget that this is designed by a small company and is a rather niche product, which warrants that pricetag. I don't know if you could make the electronics go with a single off-the-shelf part, but at least the molding is a custom job.

    Hi 👋 Erin! Really great review on the product... I have to admit, the image does look great and I can completely see the benefit of the slick mode, it does look so much more cleaner... but honestly I prefer the 64 in AV on a CRT while it’s still an option... it’s how I remember it and I feel like I enjoy it more because of it... but obviously to each their own, for their own reasons... Once CRTs are not an option anymore, I will totally be looking for an HDMI solutions, if that’s what we’ll even be using in the far future...
    Anyways... Keep up the great content!!! 🤘🤘

    I currently use the retrotink 2x to play the N64. Because my unit is the funtastic pal console, it’s processing a composite signal. No other signals available on those units. The retrotink does an acceptable job, but is constrained in processing a composite signal on a primarily 3D console. Even if it outputted svideo, the retrotink would eat it for breakfast!
    I predict that the eon super 64 for pal consoles when it does release, will have the same issue (funtastic models anyways) and be of similar or lessor quality than the retrotink? In saying that, the retrotink is exceptional on all other consoles I’ve used it on, sadly the N64 was lagging, but still way better than straight signal to a HD tv (if it has a composite port) or via other cheaper composite to hdmi converters. Trust me, I’ve tried them!
    Having a retrotink already, I don’t see myself getting one of these.

    I actually bought one of these and plugged it into an early gen and current gen HDTV. On the current gen the games didn’t look very good at all. On the early gen TV my SVideo cable made the games look much cleaner than this Super 64. The fact is that you can’t force a console that’s only capable of a limited video output do more than it’s hardware and the games coding were designed to do without upgrading internal hardware. I like this review. So don’t get me wrong. The super 64 can smooth the edges of characters and things in games but it’s not truly upscaling. CRT or early plasma flat screen with SVideo still look better

      its a really big thing that the game brands themselves havent lived up to their responsibility to release revamped versions of the classic systems, either for those of us fortunate to still have childhood cartridges or who would be very happy to purchase again at 5-15$ per title to re experience this software on new or classic rereleased hardware preferably with an appropriate controller and true unmodified experience. I'm extremely surprised for example that the virtual console still isn't on switch and there aren't controllers for it corresponding to n64 and GC. It was a pretty big deal to see nes and snes classics but I've never yet been able to find one at its real retail price, and I thought with blizzard finally coming through with the original wow we would see some more classic system and game revival that actually does it justice.

    probably already someone mentioned this, or maybe mike, though it's NOT possible to get an RGB signal out of an unmodded N64 because Nintendo didn't support RGB with the Nintendo 64....they only did that in France for the first batch of consoles, so the only way you'll get an RGB Signal out of a unmodded Nintendo 64 is if you happen to own one of those French ones.

    Oh man, I loved Yoshi's Story when I was a kid. Unfortunately, I lost it pretty early on. I lent it to a friend and I don't remember ever getting it back. The same thing happened with my copy of Brave Fencer Musashi, with another friend.
    Anyway, I don't remember that old N64 video game hip hop menu theme AT ALL, but it was definitely a thing at the time, as I remember 1080° Snowboarding and WWF No Mercy had similar music. It's as if the N64 sound card was only good for slap bass and scratches.
    Having said all that, I can't see myself picking this up. As ugly as I used to think the N64's graphics were, I actually think that console's visuals aged much better than the PS1 and Saturn. The blurry textures and fog help hide its defects, whereas PS1's textures and resolution having just gotten lower and more pixelated over the years.
    The only real benefit I see this HDMI adapter offers is more vibrant colors, but you can get that by tinkering with your television.

    This device basically improves the S-video signal a bit, and makes it modern-TV friendly. It's a nice bump up from original hardware, but the price feels a little steep. A couple commenters here mentioned Doom 64. For anyone interested, Doom 64 EX is a modern computer version that's quite faithful to the original, and can be played at high rez and bright (or dark) as you like; but with a caveat that you'll need a ROM image file of the actual N64 game.

    I'm considering getting this thing purely so that I can get the N64 to connect to my modern HDTV. I have an older HDTV down in the basement which still have the yellow, red and white component inputs and it works, but isn't ideal. Plus, that TV is a hunk of junk. I'm trying to avoid lugging out an old CRT to play Mario Kart with the wife once in a while. Is the Super 64 worth it purely as an HDMI converter for modern TV's? I don't really care about any improvements to the image, upscaling, etc, so should I get this thing or are there less expensive products which accomplish the same thing, while still being dependable?

    The price point is still too high. The Pound HDMI upscalers for PS1/PS2, Dreamcast and Xbox are $30 and upscale to 480/720 with no lag. Since I do have a classic tube tv for retro systems, the HDMI upscaler is just nice to have as an option for the nice big HDTV. But not for anywhere around $100.

    • @billplaisance6387
      @billplaisance6387 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sounds to me that those consoles you mentioned probably don’t need as much upscaling to make them look good unlike the N64 but if you feel this upscaler is just too much then what is a cheaper alternative that works just as good??

    • @zogmorp
      @zogmorp ปีที่แล้ว

      @@billplaisance6387 that comment was from 3 years ago. I still just use the same Pound hdmi upscalers. I even use one for the N64. I'm not actively looking for alternatives.

      @@zogmorp so how are you using that Pound adapter when it’s not even made for the N64 and even says that on their website? Did you do something to make it work?
      I know the comment I replied to was from three years ago and reminding me of that is irrelevant because I wasn’t asking what you were looking for, if you were looking for an alternative at all, I was just asking what a better alternative was for a better price to whatever you use which is now more intriguing considering what you use isn’t a device made for the 64.

    • @zogmorp
      @zogmorp ปีที่แล้ว

      what I'm using for the N64 has this title on Amazon. "Y.D.F N64 to HDMI Converter Adapter Support 16:9/ 4:3 Conversion, HDMI Link Cable for N64 /SNES /NGC/ SFC(Plug and Play)" It looks identical to the Pound adapters so I just called it that. I couldn't even remember the generic name it had. But it's what I use.

    • @billplaisance6387
      @billplaisance6387 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@zogmorp hmm. I looked at that on Amazon and to me it just looks like a typical adapter that lets you connect an ancient device to a modern TV with no upscaling which, if that’s all it does, that’s not gonna work for me. I guess maybe because I have a rather expensive 4K ultra high def TV and the picture of my N64 looks like crap.

    I just bought a couple N64'S recently and ever since then Amazon has been recommending me these RCA to HDMI upscaler boxes. My question is, to anyone who's reading this and might have experience with those, how do they stack up to something like this? Those are generally about $20 compared to $75 for this but if they don't work as well as this does they might be a waste of money. Rather spend $75 for something that works well than $20 for something that doesn't.

      I get why you think this but honestly the old school systems were awesome. I personally was a Sega kid myself but I worked at 15yrs old for one thing......GAMES. I spent my checks on TurboGrafx 16, NES, Super Nintendo, N64, Sega Master System, Sega Genesis, Sega Saturn, 32X and Sega CD.(Ugh I didn't say I was smart all the time.) But games back then bring back so many memories. The fact you need to jump through 💰money hoops💰 makes it frustrating. I'm going to Goodwill, they have a 25" and a 27" 📺 plain old TV. The 25" is $40 and the 27" is $50. I'd love to have 2 27" but hey I'll take what they have.

Still, the hardware bound anti-aliasing effect of this console is making it's graphics look soap washed.... Besides: i am from Europe, RGB Scart was always a thing and I ask myself what Nintendo was thinking when not implementing this on the board! I am not going to get an RGB mod or a Deblur mod (against those shabby effects), so best picture natively without tinkering: S-Video on PVM! Modern TV's and upscalers are blasphemy to my collectors heart!!!

    Its a good piece of hardware since tvs now are too much even on the lowest settings. But as you mentioned the price is a bit much. I still have my N64 and it will always hold a special place for me. When you get right down to it the 64 bit hardware gave it some graphical advantages over the PS1 and Sega Saturn but at the same time the limited cartridge capacity had limited its ability to produce textures and colors on same level as the CD powered consoles. So I feel one way or the other the foggy look has always been unavoidable. Other than that the N64 was the definitive console of the 5th generation for me regardless of its sales being dominated by the PlayStation (great system but it honestly hasn't aged as well). Looking back that was a very interesting time period.
