    150 dollars seems to be a bit much when you consider that you can most likely build such an adapter by yourself if you know a little bit something about electronics and video display standards.
    30 bucks is all I can get. 50 for a high quality adapter but then it should be able do to a shit ton of stuff really well.

    It's a 2:40 p system that has some options depending on the game that allows you to do different resolutions up to 640p. Depending on the camera angle for example for Resident Evil 2, sometimes the resolution can jump up to 640p. But generally speaking the Nintendo 64 is a 240p system.

    I had the Green line issue with my Super Nintendo, i actually never tried to plug it into my CRT to see if it's the adapter that causes it o3o since apparently the green line thing happens naturally to older SNES models over time.

  • @FlyBird
    @FlyBird 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    As neat as this product is, it’s way too expensive for what it does. Their GCHD Mk-II adapter is worth the price: The ability to display clean 480p via HDMI AND the ability to use component cables on a CRT for the sharpest picture possible. All with the amazing options the GCVideo layer offers. It was the easiest $150 I’ve spent in a while.
    But this is an S-Video to HDMI converter that upscales the N64’s analog 240p/480i image to 480p. It doesn’t look great, and the sharpening filter option seems mediocre as well. For $150? That’s way, way too much. I’m sure the adapter makes sure there the games are lag-free, unlike cheaper adapters, but if the picture still looks like poo, what’s the point?
    I’d argue it’s more worthwhile just the install an RGB mod and exclusively play your N64 on your CRT or install the UltraHDMI mod if you can. Those are way less convenient, but they’re WORTH it. I can’t say the same about this adapter. If it was half the price, then I’d say otherwise.

      Im just gonna point out you can get a Carby for $75 and it does everything their gamecube adapter does. Like literally the exact same gcvideo software.

    • @FlyBird
      @FlyBird 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Ian Cowell Well not *literally* everything, as the Mk-II does have the component option. But the fact that the Carby is $75 shows the Super64 should NOT be $150z

    • @ians_parks
      @ians_parks 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@FlyBird When i mentioned "Literally" it was in reference to the built in open source software that both Eon and Insurrection use for their adapters. That said Eon's intially run of the GCHD before the MKII didnt have this component out port yet still retailed for $150. Also alot of people will be in the market for these kinds of adapters soley for the hdmi solution so its hard to sell people on the component port alone.

    • @FlyBird
      @FlyBird 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ian Cowell yes, i know the the original EON adapter was $150, and that was certainly overpriced. I explicitly mentioned the component port of the Mk-II, multiple times, because I personally feel it makes up for the pricing, and that’s what sold me.
      Anywho, yes, for a straight up HDMI solution, people should get the Carby for GCN for $75. This HDMI solution for N64 is even more overpriced in comparison to that.

  • @WhiteboyUltima

    It would have been better to state at the very start that PAL consoles are not compatible. Maybe some PAL console do work, though. The Super 64 uses the S-video output from the A/V port and not all PAL N64 consoles actually supported S-Video, namely the funtastic colour range. So maybe the regular black PAL consoles do work? Either way, the UltraHDMI is a better solution considering the steep price of this.

      Enxamez Yeah but the mClassic is the same aside from 4K upscaling which he didn’t do and it offers the 4:3 ratio switch which I assume he did use. The regular mCable Gaming Edition will stretch your 4:3 into 16:9. Most TVs can correct this but if you capture gameplay for YT then that’s another step in editing. I know because I have the Gaming Edition.

    • @adroharv9213
      @adroharv9213 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      the problem there though is Nintendo still to this day don't know how to accurately recreate the analogue range of the N64 pad. All their digital games on Wii/Wii U showed this very clearly with F-zero64 and Starfox64 being noticeably jittery as far as the detectible range transferred over to another controller- even when patched. You can still play them but not to a highly optimised level- F-zero is a nightmare regarding any subtle in-between movement instead requiring almost steps of movement from the player. It's something Nintendo doesn't seem keen to even look at so unless this is addressed it will continue to be a problem

    The obvious comparison should be the RetroTINK 2x. The two upscalers use the same basic technology and have very comparable results. The Eon is 50% more expensive though. It also lacks the PAL, Component and Composite support that the RetroTINK 2x has. But is in small form factor that some may be willing to pay more for. I suspect it's going to be a hard sell though as there is a lot of competition.

    ...or use a Retrotink 2x and an N64 S-Video cable. Costs about the same (or less, depending on where you're sourcing the S-video cable), has all the same features, only takes a couple more steps to set-up (literally plugging in a couple extra cables), is compatible with PAL systems, has the same video quality as this adapter, and the Retrotink 2X doubles as an HDMI adapter and line-doubler for any SD video game console weather they be NTSC or PAL, not just the N64.
    Seriously, I love Eon's GCHD, and I appreciate what they're trying to do with the Super 64. It's great that they're producing high-quality ways to play our retro consoles on modern screens without needing to perform extensive electronic modifications (or without emulating them... seriously, N64 emulation sucks). But the Super 64's function has already been done better and more versatile for close to the same price point. I suppose if you ONLY ever wanted to play the N64, then maybe this is a nicer, cleaner package. But somehow I doubt that a person looking for such a solution only cares to play the N64. Or if they do, it's a minuscule demographic compared to general retro gamers looking for ways to play games from 240p/480i/288p/576i sources.
    The only other demographics I could think of that this would be a good value to, are people that insist on having a clean-looking retro-setup, to the point that they're willing to spend extra on multiple HDMI solutions for individual consoles (something I can see happening, admittedly), or people that insist on buying their games and hardware from their local retro game store, where the Super 64 is far more likely to be available than a Retrotink 2X.

      I can’t think of a reason it wouldn’t but I would suggest you get the HD Retrovision Component cables that upscale the RGB signal so it would be much higher quality for less than half the price. Pound has an HDMI solution for the SNES that is about $30 that uses the RGB signal too. This thing is specifically made for the N64 because it lacks native RGB, there is better video quality natively to tap into on the SNES.

    The N64 is a primarily a 240p console. All of those $30 HDMI cables and $20 converter boxes mishandle 240p but deinterlacing a non-interlaced video signal. The VAST majority of HDTVs with analog inputs do the same when scaling to their internal resolution because they 240p was kind of a hack and TV was generally 480i. Even the few HDTVs that do properly handle 240p only do that with YPbPr Component or RGB connections. Then, there's the problem with most old consoles having non-standard timings that even trip up TVs that handle 240p (latest Samsung HDTVs). It's a real mess.
    The simple solution is to line-double the 240p input and output digital 480p with a device that is aware of 240p and handles it properly. That is what this does. That is also what OSSC and RetroTink 2X do. So far, no digital solution to this problem is under $100.
