We know DKOldies sucks. We know they grossly overcharge. Yet we (not ME exactly... but a lot of youtubers and wanna be tubers) keep buying this crap to KEEP making these videos.
At first it was about getting the knowledge out there so that folks know these guys are full of it. At a point though, it's exactly what your talking about.

Using DKOldies for views, incorporating their huge social following into yours. 90% of large stores that claim to sell refurbished consoles, are actually selling consoles that aren't properly refurbished. GameStop, DKOldies, eBay you name it. It's nothing new. Simply don't buy retro stuff from these big stores. These TH-cam guys just keep making these vidoes for ratings. They're not helping or exposing anything.

eBay isn't necessarily a store but a vendor for other people's stores and no not everyone is aware of these shops.
I for one would like to know if a particular shop is a scam or not.
You might not care or purchase "retro" or older consoles but other people don't want to waste money in broken equipment or scratched games.

Yeah, he really needs to stop. We know how they do things, so this is pointless. He needs to move on and check out other retro stores, but not Lukie Games or Gamestop because they've been done multiple times now too. He’s sticking to his word and one console purchase isn’t going to keep a company afloat and the damage to their image will lose them revenue

Mostly it's because dad is clean shaven and Rich has a beard, I have come to the conclusion that beards automatically make men look older, idk why they just do.
I am so glad I built my retro game collection back in 2007. Its like the F'n wild west trying to even get a working retro console nowadays. Prices are through the roof now too.
Our local used game store doesn't promise refurbished, but whenever we have any issues they always help us! We don't have any issues but once with an NES game being a bit dirty, but they cleaned it no problem. It's sad that DK Oldies can't hold up to their promises.

Praying hard for your daughter to have a speedy recovery! I think you handled that horrible situation as good as possible. They probably got it in a somewhat clean state. The fact that they still haven't refurbished it makes it just as inexcusable as before.
The issue was always they used "refurbished" where they would have been fine just calling it pre-owned. So yes, this changes nothing.
I bought a perfectly decent clear green N64 from my local charity shop, with 12 games, for £2. Admittedly, they had no idea what it was so they just basically got rid of it, but £2 isn't bad. I sold it a year later for £5 because I never used it. Probably should have asked for more money.

There's no one place really. I bought an N64 from Mercari back in December, it came with 5 wrestling games, 2 OEM controllers (1 was in great condition the other is fine but the stick is kinda loose) and the power supply and AV cable for $155. It arrived in "too good to be true" condition as it looked like it was barely ever used...so I opened it up, and it was completely dust free...I wasn't expecting it to be THAT nice. The games that came with it definitely had 20+ years of wear on them, but the pins were spotless.
Bought a black Wii off of eBay the other day for $45, came with 3 Wiimotes, 5 games, a Nunchuck, a charging dock, the stand, the cables and even the instruction manuals...the disc drive needs some work (it keeps making the eject sound for a bit after you take a disc out), but otherwise it was in great shape, even still had the flaps that cover the Gamecube ports.
Point is...random people on the internet are doing better work than these online retailers are for FARRRR cheaper prices. Just gotta look around a little.
The things on the ends of that beefy HDMI cable are black ferrite cores. They reduce electrical noise on the line. It's for when you hear things like buzzing, white noise, etc. because your system has poor shielding. HDMI typically doesn't have those problems though so they're more for like a 3.5mm audio cable which is highly susceptible to noise, USB cables & your actual power cords.

Vintage stock is one place I hate with a passion. They are over priced on their consoles a lot and everything I have ever got from them was dirty. Their local stores have horrible employees and I don’t believe they ever clean anything. They also make fake cover art for their older games and charge full price stating it’s original art. And the ones that they don’t make art for are 20% off the game. I believe you should take a look at them!

I'm personally getting tired of seeing them. I block channels and add them to my do not recommend list everyday and TH-cam continues to find more and more channels talking about this topic. I guess when they say the retro community is out of idea, it's true.
It's a sad state of affairs when there's nothing to draw in views, but the same craptastic company on repeat, but hey keep paying said company to keep making money. I'm getting bored with it as much as everyone else, but I'm still holding out hope like someone who plays the lottery everyday that one of these days the turd will be gold

I haven't seen it brought up yet, but the amount you paid vs the first one you showed is that you had the "Substitute 2 Original Controllers" and the "Add an AV to HDMI Pak" that's why it's more expensive. so before the sale it was $189 + $60 + $25 = ~$280. Not Defending DK Oldies because that's still an outrageous price just thought I might correct you on that.

To DK Oldies standards that is basically "NEW Unopened in the BOX N64". I say for the next retro system buy. Get one from a REPUTABLE known brand that people say does an amazing job. So you can show the people what "REAL" refurbishment of an old retro system should look like.

That japanese power-supply is a fire-hazard. since in Japan they use 100Volt
and in the USA they use 120Volt
Since they never go inside the machines, having a good to bad system is a roll of the dice based on how well kept the system was from the previous owner that traded it into DKOldies.

Most likely the worst of them all. I just ordered a refurbished console from amazon, and let's just put it this way... I can already tell it's gonna have problems 😂
The only Amazon "refurbished" or "renewed" consoles that are good are the consoles that are relatively young (less than 10 years old or so).
Essentially, those consoles probably weren't "refurbished", but were used and returned in good condition, so they are still playable. For example, I bought a "renewed" (granted that is different fron refurbished) sega genesis mini 1 a few weeks ago from Amazon, and it plays extremely well because it's only 4 years old or so.
My wife got my N64 from Amazon about a year ago as a surprise gift. I'm not sure what 3rd party refurbished it, but both the console and original controller was clean at least exterior wise. I never opened them though. No issues... yet 🤞
I can't speak for refurbished consoles on Amazon, but I have purchased five refurbished PCs and two refurbished cell phones from Amazon, and never had a problem with any of them. I have opened each PC upon arrival and gone through them with a fine-tooth comb. I could find nothing to complain about in ANY of them. All screws tight, all cards, cables, and RAM fully-seated, no dust, exactly the out-of-box experience one should expect.
The PC I'm using now was advertised as "heavily scratched," but in reality it had what I would call "minor scuffing."
As always, thoroughly review SELLER feedback, and try to "read between the lines" to see which critical reviews are due to Operator Error or Unreasonable Expectations. If you have a great experience, be sure to leave positive feedback for the seller, and you'll be helping people like you in the future find those sweet deals.

For those of you who haven’t figured it out yet, it’s more cost effective for them to replace superficially cleaned, “working” consoles under warranty and discourage customers from opening them, than it is to spend the time actually refurbishing them.

That Japanese PSU takes 100V and has a similar plug to the US however it may die prematurely due to too much voltage after enough use.

This is great....DK oldies came through my algo last week...
I still think the discussion on DKOldies should continue. If they're improving that means keep the pressure on them or else they'll grow complacent again and get lazy. I do think Lukie Games should be looked at next, not as bad as DKOldies but a little questionable and I think letting these places know that the people want what they pay for and what's promised to them get met. These retro games and hardware are likely on their last legs so I think they should be treated fairly and taken care of to prolong their lives as long as possible. Game preservation is important, and I wish the industry felt the same way.
Apparently Lukie Games used to be great from almost everyone’s experience including mine. They literally became bad as soon as they knew they could scam people just like DK Oldies.
those warranty void stickers are also illegal in the european union, because you should be able to open the damn thing cause you bought it!
You *can* use a Japanese power supply, but the difference in voltage will put extra stress on the voltage regulator, causing it to die quicker.
LoL the fact joey sent rich an N64 with a Japanese power supply is weird enough. Why a foreign p.s. and not an "original" or at least domestically made p.s.?
@@KootenaiKing Japanese and American systems are almost identical, stickers aside the only difference is two taps in the cart slot. Remove them and you got a console that runs both US and JP games.
Probably got a bunch of those with modded slots traded in and the power supply landed in a box with American ones.
People misinterpret what refurbishing means. Refurbishing is just restoring something to working order, not making it factory condition or even cleaning. The cleaning is done as a courtesy because it of course makes items sell better, but that's not part of refurbishing at all. The cracked controller port is annoying, but it works & is not worth the amount of time sourcing & then soldering on a new controller port. If you're a collector you would look for mint condition items anyway & not refurbished.
Now if DKOldies says they clean everything inside that's different, but if they're just refurbishing then what they are doing is the norm.
$169 for an N64???? Just shop around locally. Most shops here in Michigan sell them for $70-$80.

i remember being obsessed with retro consoles in 2015 and stumbling onto their website. i came so close to buying an n64 bundle but for the price and the uncertainty i couldn’t let myself do it. so glad i never bought from them, thank you for exposing them

I like the Japanese adapters and their hori cables too, those are sick. If their 2 player packs come with oem controllers that pretty much work, then good for them that's pretty reasonable in comparison to their old prices. That's a somewhat consumer friendly price point. They aren't hooking them up w friend or market prices, but retail--that's not bad, other people out there bop their customers harder than that.

it really is enough said that at $280+ they couldnt replace the controller port which has replacement parts readily available if not just use a port from a dead/parts console
From what I heard is the only time they refurbish a console is when something is actually messed up and that’s the only time they’ll clean it also

I have not been selling retro games for over 10 years, but when I sold a twin fami as refurbished, I dishwasher the main board, hand rebend the connector, give it a new sewing machine belt AND recapped the power supply and the main board. I sold red ones for $199 and black ones for 229. Oh, I would also put nes female controller ports for another $20. Or I would change the pads for $10. Getting an "A" disk board was another $30 but let you load games from your PC. I used to buy large lots of fami disk drives to salvage A boards.

Now I’ve never purchased used or refurbished consoles before, but if that’s the quality/condition they are in, just find your local game shop and support their business. At least you can see the console before you buy it.

The console wasn’t even turned off properly before it was sent to you. As soon as you took it out the bubble wrap it was still “powered on”.

Refurbished doesn't meant take apart and cleaned. Literally it means renovate and redecorate. Doesn't mean they take it apart anr clean it etc. If they did that then they'd charge more.

I got a N64 refurbished from them last year and I had left a personal message to see if they were able to get me a non scruffy top of a N64 console. I might have been better off not leaving them that note because they shipped me one that had a huge dent and I had to fix it myself. Not to mention I opened it up and it was dusty

You need to buy any console with a fan. That will be where the filth is.
The way they should word it if they're honest is, "We refurbish any consoles or controllers that NEED it, and not the ones that don't". That would be more acceptable than stating you refurbish ALL of your consoles. Because, that would be understandable from a productive business stand point.

Retro game market is rough. I went to a local highly rated game shop and bought an overpriced old 3DS console there. Just to get home and find out the touch screen calibration is broken and can’t be resolved by the software. So…. It could be a lot worse honestly.

This Nintendo might be in better condition than previous consoles, but it still wasn't refurbished. The cobweb alone means they didn't open it and give it a basic cleaning. Likely it was just better kept by its previous owner and DKOldies doesn't get any of the credit for that. So lowering the price doesn't get them off the hook if they are still claiming the product is refurbished when it very clearly is not.
