The top of Mario's hat goes from a jaggy mess to smooth like butter with the mClassic. It was such a crazy jump I wasn't expecting it. That's the type of thing they should use in their advertising.
Running a Retrotink and cheap S-Video cables yield's about the same results as the Super64 for near $50 less. And considering you can run the retrotink with other devices with the aid of audio/video switchers, imo, makes the Retrotink option for this stand out even more. Plus if you want to RGB mod your N64 in the future, a pair of HD Retrovision cables can make it's RGB output work with the Retrotink. It's not a bad device by any means, but $150 is really up there, it should be half that to compete properly with the retrotink.
Great video as always Adam! I'm on the fence about this Super 64 device, but now I'm very interested in the mCable and mClassic. Looking forward to a video explaining and comparing these two devices.
I grew up playing the N64 with RF. It did not do the N64's blurry Vaseline-smothered textures any favors. I use S-Video on a CRT currently and it could be better but its LEAGUES better than what I was used to.
You and ReviewTech's videos are my first two choices to watch on this product! To get my N64 to display on my 4K Vizio is I connect the AV out to the AV input on my Sony HDMI AV receiver which outputs and upscales it to 1080p. Pretty decent video quality and more vibrant colors but I'd like to get my hands on this
I don't know my friend, there are a couple of games that I actually prefer to have the smoothing turned off, especially with games with a lot of copy. But I will say I need to get me one of them m cables!
If the smoothing option is anything like the effect the Mcable has on lower resolution content, I actually think it was the right choice to have it turned off by default as it tends to crush detail, which on a console like the N64 which already has a very "smeary" look due to low resolution combined with aggressive anti-aliasing, could result in a very soft image.
Your right they do tend to loose detail and add considerable artifacting. It's way I favour a RGB mod with OSSC or UltraHDMI for modern flat TVs. It just retains the clarity.
8:12 Ironically, your old SCART device is a great solution for games like that. Since it treats 240p and 288p as 480i and 576i respectively, it never blacks out between resolution switches. I'm a PlayStation man and most of my favourite games have the resolution switch, which is why I chose to stick with the cheap SCART box over the Framemeister.
You are wrong, kind of. The device is advertised as an easy way to hook up the N64 to modern displays. The default setting is and should be an authentic output of the original signal, with any post processing being optional to the consumer based on their preferences. I do agree that for convenience it probably should remember the last setting for the next time u boot up the system.
Being an emulation guy, this is pretty neat. I'm sort of a hybrid. I'm a collector who loves collecting physical media and consoles, but my everyday driver is emulation. Basically, my Alienware laptop connected via HDMI to my TV is my "emulation station" using Big Box as the frontend and RetroArch for the emulation. I sit comfortably from my couch playing everything on my XB1 controller. I fall into the camp of emulation where I play everything at max settings. Like Dolphin (GameCube/Wii emulator), I run the games at 5K resolution and with x16 anisotropic filtering. I love playing games at max setting because in my opinion, its more fun to play things when they look awesome. Other emulators for N64 and PS1 have similar settings you can tweak to run stuff at 4K. Games look even better than actual HD remakes. The slick mode for the EON Super 64 looks similar to how more sophisticated shaders (xbr & hq ) work in emulation. I say sophisticated because there are a TON of shaders/filters that will "blur" the image to make pixels/jagged edges look softer/smoother (an actual option when playing PS1 games on the PS3), but in that you blur the whole picture, which sacrifices picture clarity. Anyways, like I was saying, it is cool to see similar options that have been around in emulation are coming to actual consoles as attachments instead of modding the console.
To my knowledge the Master system released in 85, Famicom in 83, in Japan, but no big deal. Fully agreed that the slick mode or whatever it's called, should be default, no questions asked, dumb oversight there but overall seems solid. Kind of expensive though. I'd be willing to pay like $80-90 for it, since it's only compatible for the N64, and not Snes though Gamecube or anything else just for example.
Videos like this are the reason why I'm a videophile now. A lazy videophile (things like the Framemeister are never going to be in my price range), but a videophile nonetheless. Your videos on image clarity convinced me to buy component cables for my original Xbox, and I've become obsessed with calibrating my tv and looking in to ways to improve my experience with my other old consoles.
Love your reviews Adam! Fantastic job! Usually, I don’t have much to add concerning your reviews, but this time I feel like I have to. 1. There is a reason to use it on an American GameCube. Remember that later Gamecubes were stripped of the Digital Out. This is a perfect adapter for those cubes. In addition, the clarity of HDMI many times shows of dithering on certain games. I’m not giving up my MKII because of it, but it drives some people bananas. That way, you could have a really good S-Video signal with the slick mode on GameCube, it could look really nice. 2. I wish there was a scanline option for this machine. The GCHD has both scanlines and alternating scanlines, to simulate 240p and 480i content respectively. I wish this machine had a feature like that so that I could simulate the CRT look. As of now, the $150 price tag looks a bit much.
The main problem I see here is that it's priced a bit too close to the Ultra HDMI for anyone with soldering skills, and a bit too far from the RetroTink for anyone without.
Thanks for all the comparisons! I was able to use your code to get a discount on the Super 64 and mine should be arriving soon. I agree with you about making the "slick" mode the default mode and too bad about RE2 but again I can't wait for mine to arrive. The mClassic looks amazing and I might invest in one of those down the road but your video convinced me to not just connect the Super 64 to my TV directly. I will feed it into my HDMI upscaler which should compliment it well.
Given the EON is basically doing the same thing as a Retrotink but the EON lacks the extra inputs, is compatible with fewer systems, can't have multiple systems plugged in at once, lacks PAL support and costs 50% than the Retrotink it does not look great value. For the money you are at OSSC and UltraHDMI board territory. It's strange people are getting so worked up about extra anti aliasing on a N64. It's been out on the Retrotink for some time and there are a few brands off cables with it built in though the general consensus was not that great on the N64. It just added artifacts and softened already rather soft details. Most appeared to preferably extra sharpening. TW RGB mod and the UltraHDMI were very popular for this. Another favourite was scan lines bringing a more authentic feel back. But the EON can't do these.
Love the video. Didn't know you could get such a clean signal out of the N64 without opening it up and installing the N64RGB or Ultra HDMI mod. The mCable looks very promising.
A lot of people forget about S-VIDEO on the N64 as it was only ever officially launched in Japan. There have been high quality upscalers available many years that can utilize it. The EON looks doing the same think the Retrotink does though the tink is multi system comparable and a more competitive price.
... a pal version is coming? Damn im looking forward to that. By this point I almost gave up on ever seeing my pal n64 displaying above the quality of oatmeal
Save yourself $45 and buy a $5 Svideo cable + Superior RetroTINK-X2. Then not only can you plug in your Svideo consoles (N64), but also your native RGB consoles (SMS, Genesis, Neo-Geo, SNES, PS1, Saturn) when using HD Retrovision YPbPr cables.
Nice Video as always Adam. Seems to be a nice device btw but is coming out way to late for me. I got a hdmi modded N64 last year and although it was not cheap I did not regret it. I use the N64 quite often and have not the space for old tv set from the last century. So I have to use quite expensive equiment like the Framemaster or the N64 hdmi mod for my retro gaming needs. It was worth every cent for me. But I am glad that at least the NTSC region n64 fans now have a chance to get a better pic on their old n64 for a smaller price than the internal HDMI mod.
I’ve watched a few iof these reviews and it’s mostly annoyed me no one mentions the port having unused RGB connectors. You were up front about it even showing comparisons big thumbs upo
That thing must have quite the video processing power to convert N64 S-video in to a neat HDMI signal. I am able to do that with a full scale DVDO video processor.
Hey Adam I have a question when using the M-Classic with the Super64 is the Expansion Pak detected by the game? I ask because another TH-camr RGT85 did a review using the Super64 with the M-Cable and said that games that use the Expansion Pak couldn't detect the presence of the Expansion Pak.
I didn't run into that problem. EDIT: That issue Shawn refers to is specific to RE2 and compatibility with the Super 64 when the expansion pack is used.
Adam Koralik I wrote the comment before you mentioned it in the video, why is it we get the shaft end of the shaft here in the PAL region when it comes to the N64 at least. At least Nintendo corrected them mistake with GameCube and gave us RGB support. Thanks Adam for the continuing content
Good old Adam hooking us up with the thorough tech review. My $$-saving solution is just to play on a smaller tv. Sure the upscaling is important for video capture but the difference is not so significant without all the other mods. The GameCube upscaler is far more potent in terms of what it offers.
Adam, I know you will actually read this, but this won't work on PAL N64's right ? I don't think I have seen any reviewers, RGT85, Metal Jesus, John Riggs, etc say that which is a fairly crucial point for anyone in Europe/Australia etc thinking about picking this up. ?
When the n64 was released in Aus I had to get the rf connector to play it as our tv didn't have composite output nor did many tv's in aus 96 and that's the way I played it until I got rid of it!
@Adam- what is your RGB to RetroTink setup? I have a Tink and want to mod my 64, but I am not interested in SCART. Tell me you found some other workaround!
What's really stupid is that the early N64's (the ones that can be RGB modded) do generate an RGB picture internally, they just didn't route it to the AV port, presumably to save 18 cents on manufacturing.
I'll stick with using S-Video on my CRT TV to play my N64 with. These HDMI adapters are over priced. I would prefer a classic mini over these HDMI adapters.
dood EVERY TIME there's a HDMI adaptor come out and you review it I always go off yours...nobody else that does it uses an extra cable like the M Cable and you REALLY know what your talking about
Man... the EON is way over priced. They should be priced no more than $50, as they are JUST adapters. For $150 you can get a new controller and a new just released game, and some extra stuff for that price point. Cool idea, but HUGE ripoff. Imagine... once the N64 mini comes out it will be under $100 and include an awesome library of games, console, controllers AND have HDMI output.
Can't you buy an Ultra HDMI for $150? They should have tried to do something similar to the de-blur that that has if they want to sell that for $150 In this case, buying a good s-video cable and a retroTINK 2x would achieve the same results, while also being able to use it with any other console you might have :/
@@AdamKoralik Oh yeah, I've been trying to get one for like a year lol. There's not a lot of info on it, but I believe that the VI-deblur that the Ultra HDMI uses doesn't disable it on a hardware level, but rather uses "smart algorithms" to reverse the effects of it, meaning that possibly in the future they could have something like a plug and play adapter that does that with a native s-video signal, and maybe even add a scanline option like the GCHD. THAT would be well worth the $150 to save the majority of people the hassle of modding their consoles.
@@excadrillo99 The Ultra HDMI does indeed use various algorithms to undo some of the blurring. There are no known ways to truly disable the effects after the fact to the best of my knowledge, but a Game Shark can be used on some games to disable them by messing with the rendering settings before they reach the GPU. As far as de-blur and scanlines on adapters go, there's nothing necessarily preventing them from working. I'd assume the main problem is the cost of adding the necessary processing power.
@@AdamKoralik Hello Adam, Actually the Pound cable uses RGB signal, what i really meant was, an RGB moded N64 with the SNES pound cable and the mclassic. Oh and BTW, are the Mclassic and Mcable basically the same in terms of picture quality?
That’s awesome so that means with the mCable I can get from 480p to 4K. Since you have contacted EON recently do you by chance know if they might be working on one for the Super Nintendo and maybe the Wii?
Question here. Does the Eon spit out 3:2 aspect ratio slightly stretching the image or is it a true 4:3? I hooked up the Mclassic to the Eon and noticed the image looks closer to 4:3. Just curios as to which one is correct. Thanks and great video btw.
Just curious if you plan on doing a video on the mClassic at some point? I'd love to see one! You were the one who made me aware of the mCable and if it wasn't for your discount code I probably wouldn't have bit the bullet and gotten one. Boy am I happy I did :) It makes GameCube games with Eon II and PS2 through the Retrotink look AMAZING! I was most curious what happens when you run and mCable out of the mClassic and if you had thought about getting more mClassic when they come out to daisy chain them for higher resolutions?
Yo, yes I'll be doing a video. I'm glad I could help! Not sure about daisy chaining multiple mClassics. The mClassic plus the mCable didn't seem to do much.
9:23 - There's still something wrong with your capture setup. The black levels are too high, causing the image to be washed out, and the aspect ratio from Composite and direct S-Video capture are the wrong aspect ratio. How are you capturing those? Are you using a scaler box before the capture card, or direct into the card? It's fair enough if this was being captured for streaming gameplay or something, but it doesn't make for a good comparison.
@@AdamKoralik I'm from the UK and in pal regions the funtastic and pokemon consoles had the s-video output removed so only the origional grey ones have s-video! Assumed that this was the case with other regions too?
Seems decent, but still not comparable to a quality S-Video with a Sony Trinitron if you have the space. You can find these TVs on Craigslist and Letgo for free, if not extremely cheap often.
Hey Adam what in your opinion is the best option for HDMI out option on a PAL (Australia) N64 as of 2021? I've bought the mClassic adapter but just hit the halfway point in this video where you state the Super 64 doesn't support PAL consoles, but you also mention one was on the horizon. Any updates on the PAL version or alternative HDMI out suggestions for AUS/PAL? Thanks
The mCable or mClassic is the key factor there. Personally, as stated in the video, I like RGB Mod --> RetroTink ---> mClassic. But I don't have an Ultra HDMI N64 so I can't test that.
New subscriber, great video. Will need to wait for the pal version, but that price stings a little. Only just hearing about the mCable / mClassic , would love to see what effect they have on the Playstation Classic. *Wink wink*
Does the mclassic do the same thing as the mcable? Does the revised version of the mcable or the new mclassic finally work with HDMI switch box? Can’t wait for a review of the mclassic to compare with the revised edition of the mcable.
Adam Koralik Adam Koralik just responded to my question eeeek! Well, let’s say the frame meister as this used to be regarded as one of the best. Also, are there better upscalers than frame meister these days?
I have a vizio p series, bought a different rca to hdmi and the sound wouldn’t work for the tv when using the n64. Will the sound work if I buy this? Please help!!
How does this thing work without its own power adapter, especially after knowing that the retroTINK needs one? Wouldn’t that put unnecessary strain on the N64?
Of course it does. The component ports aren't digital component, they analog RGB. Basically SCART but using a component port instead. Watch my review of it.
Mr. Koralik, while these are awesome, why do you never recommend gaming on CRTs as an alternative for retro gaming? They provide crystal clear pictures compared to HDTVs for 240p and 480i, they're cheap now, and they have almost no lag.
Adam. I don’t know if it’s ok but I tried yoshi story and look amazing using the adapter. But ocarina of time look horrible and blurry. Why is that ? Thanks
Hi Adam great video & look at the product as always. I wanted to say that as a owner of a eon gchd & a carby that eons molding is.. Meh. The lip of the unit broke it still works but that made me buy a carby & the metal housing is really snug & nice. However, as many people have said $150 is steep especially when the retrotink is on the market & it's more versatile unit. Also it is VERY odd that the smoothing feature has to be pressed EVERY TIME. I recently bought a ps2 cable from "levelhike" & it has a switch for 4:3 & 16:9, why eon couldn't have made a switch is beyond me. Nice video though Adam 👌
Hey Adam, I know TH-cam compresses the fuck out of videos so sometimes its kinda hard to tell the difference on some of the comparisons between sources. I dont know how much of a pain in the ass it would be but would you be able to upload at least the comparison footage to something like Dropbox or Google Drive? That way we can see the subtle differences a bit better on a less compressed video. If its not too much of a pain in the ass. Thanks man. Always love your content!

I’m guessing the PAL Region N64 have got the shaft with this product?
Correct.
*Cries in Irish/Pal*
EON better make one for the PS2. I still play it to this day, but would like better quality on my HDTV. Great video. In depth info.
If this device works on GC that means it gives HDMI plug and play option to the GCs withough the digital port which is pretty cool
Provided you can make it fit, as it natively won't.
cool video tech talk adam
Good old Adam hooking us up with the thorough tech review.
My $$-saving solution is just to play on a smaller tv. Sure the upscaling is important for video capture but the difference is not so significant without all the other mods.
The GameCube upscaler is far more potent in terms of what it offers.
So Rich from ReviewTechUSA and Adam release a review of the same product at the same time??
Coincidence? I think not!
Immortal John Hancock too.
rob d and MetalJesus too
We all have to honor embargo rules.
@@robbiefl2001 This product must be a big deal. I mean it is N64 related, N64 being the retro console that probably everyone's looking into now.
Adam Koralik makes sense, just all of you uploading at the same time is amazing!
Adam, I know you will actually read this, but this won't work on PAL N64's right ?
I don't think I have seen any reviewers, RGT85, Metal Jesus, John Riggs, etc say that which is a fairly crucial point for anyone in Europe/Australia etc thinking about picking this up.
?
lol 4.58 in the video. I stand corrected. You are the 1st to point this out.
Just got a RGB modded N64 today in the mail. Wish I would've known about this.
sounds like you're still possibly better off! 😁
You're better off with your rgb modded N64 on a Trinitron with rgb support. N64 looks best on tube TV.
Beast mode activated. Big Adam in the house
Will the mClassic RGB collection be available on Amazon like the original mClassic?
I assume so, I don't know.
@@AdamKoralik Okay, thank you.
HD RetroVision's SNES RGB SCART cables on the RGB N64 to RetroTink with doubling and smoothing to mClassic in retro mode.
I would prefer a classic mini over these HDMI adapters.
do note with RE2 on the N64, you can have the game locked to 240P by playing the game without the expansion pak installed.
Yep.
dood EVERY TIME there's a HDMI adaptor come out and you review it I always go off yours...nobody else that does it uses an extra cable like the M Cable and you REALLY know what your talking about
Man... the EON is way over priced. They should be priced
no more than $50, as they are JUST adapters. For $150 you can get a new
controller and a new just released game, and some extra stuff for that
price point. Cool idea, but HUGE ripoff. Imagine... once the N64 mini comes out it will be under $100 and include an awesome library of games, console, controllers AND have HDMI output.
I want it since I have an everdrive 64.
Can't you buy an Ultra HDMI for $150? They should have tried to do something similar to the de-blur that that has if they want to sell that for $150
In this case, buying a good s-video cable and a retroTINK 2x would achieve the same results, while also being able to use it with any other console you might have :/
I think that's just the board, which is never in stock.
Hey Adam. How did you configure your Super64 with the mClassic? When I try both together I get no picture.
Should just plug and play. Provided everything has power.
@@AdamKoralik Did you plug the mClassic into the TV or Super64? I'll try again.
How about the SNES pound cable and the Mclassic?
I would bet it's bad because that cable just uses the composite signal.
@@AdamKoralik Hello Adam, Actually the Pound cable uses RGB signal, what i really meant was, an RGB moded N64 with the SNES pound cable and the mclassic.
Oh and BTW, are the Mclassic and Mcable basically the same in terms of picture quality?
Pound/hyperkin is shit
Damn this dude has a lot of knowledge
Another great Video from you. I have have a question do you know of any great HDMI upscaler that can turn the 480p Signal to 1080p or 4K?
Essentially that's the mClassic or mCable.
Though it depends on the source. The Framemeister is vastly more universal.
3:2, the mClassic corrects the issue.
@@AdamKoralik thank you! Good to know
Just curious if you plan on doing a video on the mClassic at some point?
Not heard anyone mention that it will not be compatible with the funtastic and pokemon consoles due to them only outputting composite only!
Didn't know that was a thing.
Thanks
Not that I'm personally aware of. N64 is annoying to upgrade, and PAL users have an even worse time unfortunately.
Could you test this on the 64DD? I wonder what 64DD games look like in 480p!
It works, but...nothing much to show.
Ok! Thanks for replying!
Adam... would you say this is far better than svideo to retrotink to Mcable? I have always found fuzziness and ghosting with the retrotink
The mCable or mClassic is the key factor there. Personally, as stated in the video, I like RGB Mod --> RetroTink ---> mClassic.
But I don't have an Ultra HDMI N64 so I can't test that.
When is the MClassic coming out?
I think they launch their site next week? Not totally sure.
New subscriber, great video. Will need to wait for the pal version, but that price stings a little. Only just hearing about the mCable / mClassic , would love to see what effect they have on the Playstation Classic. *Wink wink*
So is it best just to get an N64 s video cable, use it on retrotink2x multiformat, with mclassic & you'll basically get the Super 64 eon for far less?
In essence, yes. The Super 64 is a more convenient version.
@@AdamKoralik Thanks
Does the mclassic do the same thing as the mcable? Does the revised version of the mcable or the new mclassic finally work with HDMI switch box? Can’t wait for a review of the mclassic to compare with the revised edition of the mcable.
Video coming soon.
Hey mate are you saying it’s definitely better than the monster cable to a hdmi upscaler to 1080p?
Hard to say as I don't know what specific items you're using.
Yeah, and throw that right in the trash. Those things are garbage.
How does this thing work without its own power adapter, especially after knowing that the retroTINK needs one? Wouldn’t that put unnecessary strain on the N64?
Doesn't seem to.
But Retrotink doesn’t support RGB. how you connected the RGB console?
Of course it does. The component ports aren't digital component, they analog RGB. Basically SCART but using a component port instead. Watch my review of it.
Check out hd retrovision cables and youll understand why
Mr. Koralik, while these are awesome, why do you never recommend gaming on CRTs as an alternative for retro gaming? They provide crystal clear pictures compared to HDTVs for 240p and 480i, they're cheap now, and they have almost no lag.
Honestly, because in 2019 it's impractical to expect most people to do that.
@@AdamKoralik That's somewhat true. Thanks for your videos and the response!
i have an unmodded 64 and just bought the rad2x. is this pretty much the same thing?
Similar, yeah.
Do you have a video on the mclassic
Soon.
Adam. I don’t know if it’s ok but I tried yoshi story and look amazing using the adapter. But ocarina of time look horrible and blurry. Why is that ? Thanks
No idea, could be a game by game thing.
Please consider doing a recap on handhelds like you did on consoles. Im sure it would be great stuff!
Will it work with a game capture device? I stream on twitch . And I normally use a elgato Hd60s
Depends on the supported resolutions of the capture device.
£120 ?! LOL
When is the Pal version coming out?
Not sure.
Ok
Soon according to eon but there is literally no point now that the rad2x exists. Dont get scammed by eon and save yourself some cash.
What resolution did the m classic upscale to?
1440p for games, 4K for film and video.
@@AdamKoralik thanks alot keep up with the good content.
Wait how did you use the mclassic and the eon 64 at the same time ??
I just plugged it in?
@@AdamKoralik you plugged the m classic into the eon 64? For some reason I'm under the impression you could only use 1 am I wrong ?
@@jabarikidd801 I don't know where you got that impression. EON adapter into the N64, mClassic into the EON adapter.
@@AdamKoralik ok
Hey Adam, I know TH-cam compresses the fuck out of videos so sometimes its kinda hard to tell the difference on some of the comparisons between sources. I dont know how much of a pain in the ass it would be but would you be able to upload at least the comparison footage to something like Dropbox or Google Drive? That way we can see the subtle differences a bit better on a less compressed video. If its not too much of a pain in the ass.
Thanks man. Always love your content!
Even then you can't really win because the capture process compresses from the get go. Nothing beats a side by side.
@@AdamKoralik Oh alright man. Just a thought. Thanks for the reply! Keep up the great work!
