Awesome video Bob - long time watcher and first time comment. I loved my N64 - was the first console that I had and got me into gaming. Diddy kong racing, Mario 64, Pokémon stadium, snap and goldeneye were always the go to games. I still get it out every now as I still have a tv that it can connect too but yes... the controller sucks!
Why would you want an Eon 64 when you could get a Retrotink with the same functionality but with a cheaper price and more versatility of inputs and console options?
@@RFNY315 Well yeah but that isn't going to do anything dufferent from straight up plugging your av cables in aside from make it fit the screen slightly better. Kinda pointless.
Eon does not use the same tech as the GameCube adapter. The GameCube has open source software to use the digital out on original dol-001 models. I do appreciate that all the reviewers that have received free units have been honest in saying it is to expensive since it is. Eon needs to lower the price.
The N64/PSOne era was all about the polygons for me, the sharper I can get those the better. Don't understand those who want to limit the pixels showing on anything after the SNES.
Well done! My first with the Super 64 would be Mario 64 but my second game would be Rogue Squadron in hi rez mode via the Expansion Pak. I bought a Super 64 and mine will be in at the end of the week. I will be using it with my HD upscaler to game in 1080p With any upscaler, the cleaner image you put in the better image you get out so using the Super 64 should yield some great results. Definitely a good time to be a N64 retro gamer! Keep up the great work!
Episode I Racer was also on Dreamcast and PC, and is definitely better on those platforms. Better graphics, cutscenes, music, more levels. Plus on PC you don't need any extra work to get an HD image, just turn up the settings.
Yea but then you couldn't use the n64 and what's the fun in that? The n64 is retro fun and has way more games than that. In fact, it has about 100 must own titles.
I was starting to think of all the gaming channels I follow you were the only one who hadn’t done a video on this product.... and then this morning, here we are 😆 but I’m a sucker for Wulfden vidz, I’m sure this is the best for last lol
Hey, the 30/60fps thing is a limitation of resolution and line rate, it's a bit much to explain in a comment but the short version is this: An interlaced picture will be a 30fps (25 in pal) output. Your capture card will read 480i. Yes, HDMI can carry 480i video, it's in spec. A progressive picture will be a 60fps (50 in pal) output. Your capture card will read 240p if it's good, or 480i if it's bad. There's a chance that this thing upscales 240p to 480p. Technically 240p is out of spec on HDMI, but works sometimes. Depends on the device.
Bob I may not care about the Super64 but I like watching your videos and you're funny. Though I'd totally try Smash 64 first if the Super64 fell in my lap. Also, 9:55 ya forget to link in the description.
For my consoles that were meant to hook to a CRT I went and got a really nice "free" 36 inch CRT with a variety of AV hookups. I searched local Facebook buy and sell groups, Craigslist and Nextdoor until I found someone giving away a good one for free. You actually see these old CRT's for free quite often. This one was in perfect, mint condition and being given away by an older gentlemen downsizing house. I say "free" but the thing ended up costing me around $500.00. You see, it was heavy - really, really, really heavy. Me and the guy barely got it to my van. I knew on the way home there was no way my wife was going to be able to help me get this inside and upstairs to the game room. I told her we would simply lift it out of the van and onto the floor of the garage and then I would figure it out from there. She could barely lift her side of the TV and was struggling, upon setting it down she didnt her her fingers out from under the TV and it came down on her fingers, and she jerked her hand away. She put a very deep (to the bone) and long cut into the middle finger which required a trip to an urgent car clinic. Despite having insurance it still cost us nearly $500 to have her hand stitched up.
@@johnc19891 it's not hard just buy the equipment and practice on some old PC hardware. Like removing and putting back on the bios chips on like a Windows 98 motherboard. I just don't want the rgb mod it HDMI mod cause I don't want to butcher my Pokemon n64 case
@@johnc19891 I mean a cheap resoldering station is like 50$ and you can find motherboards for junk old PCs for basically free. Teaching yourself to solder will help you out in the long run, and it's not that expensive. Or you can just sit there and not get it cause you don't want to pay money for installation fees.
@@johnc19891 It's really not even that expensive. Most soldering kits you buy online these days come with practice stuff. I ordered my niece a kit that was $15 and came with all sorts of extra cutters, a practice board, and wire to practice with. Between one of those $15 kits and some TH-cam videos my 10 year old niece is now capable of doing component level repairs on her mom's desktop which she did under my supervision. They should be teaching this in school honestly. Modding aside it's a cheap and easy skill to learn that can save you a lot of money on replacing electronics when they are still usable.
My retro setup centres around a lovely CRT, using S-video for the N64 specifically, but if I ever move to “all consoles hooked up to the flat screen”, I’d definitely consider this for the N64. Maybe the GameCube too, since mine lacks the digital port, S-video is the best it puts out.
Great vid Bob! I would’ve gone for Super Mario 64 as well although I might’ve gone for shadow of the empire because that’s the one my dad played the most. Anyways great video! Do you think that the one upscaling dongle that was at E3 this year would work with it?
I sort of set myself the challenge of going back in time and getting as many of my favorite consoles of my past back, so I could play games on original hardware (softmods and everdrives welcome), have them all hooked up and ready to play, and try to get them looking with the best picture possible (within reason.) I have a mid-level 4K HDTV next to a CRT TV with component and S-video, which is how My N64 is currently hooked up. One day I plan on getting a retro tink 5x to send all my analog signals to the HDTV, but the super 64 sounds like a possible alternative. About the N64 controller, I still love it. Try playing Fzero X on the Switch with joycons or even a pro controller. It's impossible. Only the N64 analog stick will do cause that's what those games were programmed for.
Instead of cutting the corner of the SNES, how much circuitry is inside the adapter? Can one cut its corner or are there important components? Nevertheless there is finally someone talking more in detail about using the adaptor in other consoles.
The Retrotink 2x is the better buy. It also can pull S-Video from N64 and will also work with other consoles as well with composite and Component inputs. If you want the ultimate setup for N64 then the Ultra HDMI mod is the best option.
I’ll share what I posted on the NintendoLife review, with some changes: As neat as this product is, it’s way too expensive for what it does. Their GCHD Mk-II adapter is worth the price: The ability to display clean 480p via HDMI AND the ability to use component cables on a CRT/older HDTV for the sharpest picture possible. All with the amazing options the GCVideo layer offers. It was the easiest $150 I’ve spent in a while. If you want an HDMI-only solution that also has GCVideo, the Carby is $75. Half the price. But this is an S-Video to HDMI converter that upscales the N64’s analog 240p/480i image to 480p. It doesn’t look great in comparison to other enthusiast options, and the sharpening filter option seems mediocre as well. For $150? That’s way, way too much. I’m sure the adapter makes sure the games are lag-free, unlike cheaper adapters, but if the picture still looks like poo, what’s the point? I’d argue it’s more worthwhile just the install an RGB mod and use an OSSC or install the UltraHDMI mod if you can. Those are way less convenient, but they’re WORTH it imo. I can’t say the same about this adapter. If it was half the price, then I’d say otherwise.
I've always thought with any Nintendo console before the Wii U you are better off playing on a CRT, especially if we are talking about of the box without any special cables or add ons.
Hi Wulff Den, have you ever try IINE wireless controller as an alternative pro controller for switch? I heard some very good feedback about it and I'm curious to know your opinion :)
2:39 serious question here... what did you use to get elgato capture cards to work on a new Mac book pro. I tried using a usb c to usb c cable but no image pops up. I know it’s meant to be used with usb 3.0. Greatly appreciated if you share your method.
@@asianpablo1574 I know lol. Slick mode is just a buzz word. Its just a smoothing filter, something not even exclusive to their device. The retrotink2x did it first and is $50 cheaper and works on multiple systems. Eon just copied what they did since both devices linedouble 240i to 480p.
I think it looks better in low res, there's less contrast between low res textures and high res polygons if it's all low res. It was made to look like that.
I agree with you but the super 64 doesn't really increase it's resolution too much vs a lot of the other high modification solutions out there that are more expensive and I think it looks better than composite video (original) on a flat screen. To go on your note though, it's better on an old TV.
it was well designed for its time, and was quite comfortable imo in "2d platformer" mode where you only hold the dpad and the buttons instead of that middle prong
Great video Wuff Nintendo guy, though I wouldn't say N64 games looked bad for the time they looked sick with the 3D. I would try the slick mode for MK 4 because that game played great best port of that game was for N64, the PC version sucked had issues and PSX version also sucked as it didn't look as good as the N64, played like crap and would constantly freeze, load during gameplay and fatalities. I would use it on MK 4 to see if it makes it look more like the arcade port of the game. Maybe MKT too but honestly I had no issues with the graphics of that game. Other games I'd use it on would be Perfect Dark, Cruiz N series and Goldeneye.
You could always get a rad2x for $50 in the future. Nowhere near the insane price as the eon's adapter and youll still get a lagless linedoubled image with correct color and brightness representation unlike the hyperkin cable. Plus the option is always there if you wanted to get an rgb mod in the future since itll support rgb aswell.
"How can you possibly get this far" Idrc cause my N64 is at the parents house (elsewhere up in the rafters of the atttic) so I own a N64 its just not in my possession. And thats why I care to listen and because Future Bob was present
I think having a backup CRT monitor/TV would still be the best option for N64. I know big CRT's are ungodly stupid fucking heavy, but also- SOUND QUALITY. They have much better of it on many sets, some with a built-in active subwoofer. That'd be the one and only way to go, but that's just me.
My game would be Ocarina of Time, easily. I'm definitely considering this and the wireless brawler controllers, since myself and my girlfriend are big N64 nerds.
Hey, so the EON super 64 would have no use on my N64? My N64 from Germany has NUP 12452609 and is not in the list. CPU is NUS-001 (EUR) I think he has CPU 01 so that say that the super 64 dont work?
I cant understand why you are so excited for the Eon. Its 50% more expensive than a Retrotink 2x that does the same to the same quality and even more. The Retrotink 2x is a far more feature rich system and supports S-video, Component, Composite, RGB, NTSC and PAL. It will support most retro systems and can have multiple systems hooked up to it. You can have one unit for all your systems. Plus it does not draw any extra power from the video port. These systems are getting old and they are tending to fail due to cap failure. Drawing extra power from in this way is potentially not ideal for longevity of these elderly consoles. Plus you already have a XRGB Mini. That is a vastly superior unit in its own right. Just use a standard Nintendo S-video cable or quality copy there of to connect directly from your N64 to your XRGB Mini. For the most part it will give great results on it own with tones of extra effects available such as scaling, aspect correction, scan lines.... Or better still do a basic RGB mod and your XRGB Mini will give you stunning results.
I'm not Bob but the current best way is to use component cables with a component to HDMI adapter if your TV doesn't support component connections. Also you can hack the PS2 and force the PS2 to output any resolution up to 1080p using freemcboot. Just don't buy a cheap PS2 cable. All the PS2 HDMI cables are bad.
Word. I have a 4k LG tv that actually has component inputs. I bought a used PS1/2 brand component cables a while ago. I’ll try that. I had composite cables hooked up to an old crt tv and it looked like ass. Thanks for the advice!

I’m surprised that u didn’t talk about modding a n64 for use with rgb scart
I literally play my NES (non top loader lmao) on my tv with RF input
Combine this with a mclassic and THEN you are getting the best quality out of your N64 without a soldering iron.
Only if you care about anti aliasing
Yes. Getting one.
"Slick Mode"
Just call it anti-aliasing, man.
That would be a lie though. The N64 does have AA, this isn't AA.
I'd love a comparison of the gchd mk2 VS super 64 on slick mode
Yeah I have to run my cables to a old VCR and then the VCR runs it to my tv.... Thank you Mom for keeping the VCR around
that censored sound cracked me up
I think having a backup CRT monitor/TV would still be the best option for N64.
And I thought getting the GameCube in HD was impressive. This just seems impossible!
Hey, so the EON super 64 would have no use on my N64?
My N64 from Germany has NUP 12452609 and is not in the list. CPU is NUS-001 (EUR)
I think he has CPU 01
so that say that the super 64 dont work?
I hit that bell but I didn’t get a notification, I’m gonna sue youtube for making me late to this video
so whats better super 64 or retro scaler x2? ill pay top $!? lol or is there something even more powerful then those 2
hey bob what's the best gadget for playing PS2 on a modern tv?
I'm not Bob but the current best way is to use component cables with a component to HDMI adapter if your TV doesn't support component connections. Also you can hack the PS2 and force the PS2 to output any resolution up to 1080p using freemcboot. Just don't buy a cheap PS2 cable. All the PS2 HDMI cables are bad.
Word. I have a 4k LG tv that actually has component inputs. I bought a used PS1/2 brand component cables a while ago. I’ll try that. I had composite cables hooked up to an old crt tv and it looked like ass. Thanks for the advice!
Perfect dark. God I love that game.
First game I'd play... Conker's Bad Fur Day!
" no sense in polishing a turd here " -- I agree.
"Super Merry-oh"
First game I’d try? Paper Mario. Hands down. Best N64 game ever.
You need to pair this with the mclassic
Only if you care about anti aliasing
First of all I don't have an N64 but if I did and I had the games I'd want for it the first game I would play would be Pokemon Stadium. I love that game. I wish i had it.
