    Anthony realizing he still has almost 30 year old save, and panicking because he realizes they'll disappear any day now if he doesn't get them off of the card is really endearing. For several games like Goldeneye and Perfect Dark, you can actually "dual-wield" two N64 controllers, effectively giving you two separate analog sticks. Not the most comfortable for button placement, but it allowed for two thumb sticks at once for a few games that benefitted from it.

    Not sure if Anthony noticed this but the time when the N64 reset itself is when he plug in the wireless adapter with the memory pack connected. The time when the N64 didn't reset itself is when he plug in the wireless adapter without the memory pack. This means the memory pack is the cause of the reset, either by design to read the saves or faulty capacitor from the power draw.

    Just to clarify here, Diddy Kong Racing didn't use the memory pak for save games.
    As the big warning screen shows (and like Mario Kart 64), the only thing the memory pak was used for was to save ghost data in Time Trial.
    The actual save games were on the cartridge itself via an EEPROM chip, so there isn't even a CR2032 in there.

  • @Mekuso8
    @Mekuso8 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    While Diddy Kong Racing does support memory cards, the saves for the main progress in Adventure mode are actually stored on the game cartridge. The memory card is used to store ghosts for time trials.

    They were known to wear out, especially if you played any of those games that required you to spin the stick around rapidly as a QTE.
    Also, there was a third party rumble pack with a pass-through for controller pack, but it had a switch on it to switch between which was active.

    There actually was a peripheral that allowed you to use both a memory card and a rumble pak at the same time. It was a rumble pak with a built in slot to add a memory card. And it had a switch that let you choose between rumble and save whenever you wanted.
    E: It was called the TremorPak Plus. And it had two switches, one of them changed the vibration level. the downsides were that it made the controller extra bottom heavy and it used 2 batteries (but i don't remember if this was only for the rumble adjustment).

    • @LalondeJonathan
      @LalondeJonathan 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I had it and yes, batteries had the exact same function as for all other rumble paks and their copies: give the juice to the motor.

    Also, just speculation but when you put the controller port "dongle" the first time you had the memory card inside the dongle and the n64 rebooted. Second time, no memory card in dongle and no n64 reboot. Power needed for memory card pushes it over the edge? I seem to remember hot plugging n64 controllers

    • @agenticex
      @agenticex 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      N64 calibrates the analog stick on bootup. Hotplug isn't 'technically' supported. But I seem to remember games like perfect dark being ok with adding more controllers for multiplayer.
      If you hold the analog at an angle (or have the controller on the floor upside down doing the same) it will calibrate that as the center.

    imho the most ergonomic controller ever is the snes controller.
    however for my retroarch gaming i use a wii classic controller(the modern controller that most closely resembles a snes controller) with a mayflash usb adapter.
    it was immediately recognized by retroarch, and the default configuration was spot on.
    the only think i think i changed was to make the home button bring the retroarch menu.....so i dont really need to touch the keyboard while playing.
