      Glad I finally watched this. It was superb.
      VERY well researched. You even covered the Full / Partial luma range, and 4:2:2 thing.
      A certain other channel still has issues with their capture setup, as they are showing very washed out captures with the wrong luma range (and weird aspect ratio changes).
      And I think you're right, I'm also fairly sure the Super 64 is using the same chip as the RetroTink 2X. The ADV7280 is only chip around the similar ~$10 ballpark from Analog Devices which offers the line-doubler, and accepts S-Video (or Composite, or Component).
      (and has the same "blur" function. lol)
      I wrote a quick BOM list, to see roughly how much a similar device would cost, and that would include S-Video, Composite, Component, and a conversion circuit for RGB input. It could be built for around $45, not including a nice case.
      With a faster MCU added (about $4), it could even add a simple on-screen menu.
      I get that the Super 64 is a "convenience product", but the price still seems quite steep to me. As Bob said, if you add an extra video cable (and wall wart PSU), the RetroTink still works out around the same price, but can be used with lots of systems, and adds a Component input.

    • @electronash
      @electronash 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      btw, I'm not sure why the Gameshark codes are called "Deblur" patches?...
      The "VI Deblur" on UltraHDMI (and now on some N64 RGB boards) works by undoing the final filtering done by the RCP chip's VI (Video Interface) unit.
      The Gameshark patches can only disable the Anti-Aliasing feature of the console, which can look very good on some games, but can't remove that final blur, which is a feature of the hardware itself.
      Good shout outs to Bob, Mike Chi, and MLiG. ;)
      Not much else to say, because you covered everything. lol

  • @SuperDerek
    @SuperDerek 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great video Epos! It's so bizarre to me that they didn't just make one that works with RGB. There were European consoles that did in fact support RGB. And the SNES, which uses the same connector, also supports RGB natively in most cases. You'd think they'd have just designed on to fit the SNES, maybe have a kick-stand that would support the increased height of a 64 if needed, and have it auto-detect the best available signal.
    Anyway, I'm super interested in grabbing myself a Retrotink. Only caveat is getting an RGB Scart input into the Component inputs of the tink. Any suggestions on a cheap method would be very much appreciated! :)

    Hi EposVox i have the next doubt
    I recently bought the super eon 64, and i will like to know the best quality configuration for the video
    i also bought the avermedia Lg310 and my doubt is that is it better to record directly from the Avermedia Recentral
    software or from the OBs Studio creating a scene and adding a video capture device?
    the problem is when i activate it, it won't give me a video signal.
    im not very comfortable with the avermedia re central quality standard since i notice that in my tv it looks with a lot
    of color and brightness and in the capture it looks opaque (with not enough brightness-color)

    To be more specific, it's leveraging the 5v intended to power an external RF Modulator. This is why many multi-out connectors exist: to get that out of the console and be capable of powering an external one while feeding it audio/video from the same signals you'd use directly without the modulator.

      I was wondering why the Super 64 doesn't require an external power source but the RetroTink does.
      So it taps into the power that's intended for using RF? Does the Super 64 cause any unnecessary strain to the n64 by drawing that extra power?

    I wouldn't say that the drop-out when switching resolutions is unavoidable because there are two (bad) ways to avoid it:
    Always treat 240p as 480i or always treat the signal as progressive. Heck, it's theoretically possible to just drop a frame or two when switching but even expensive dedicated hardware like Framemeister XRGB Mini can't do it.
    The first one sucks for 240p 60hz effects (simulated transparency, smooth scrolling, etc) and adds latency with unecessary deinterlacing of non-interlaced content, but most digital TVs with analog inputs do this (very few properly support 240p over analog inputs and those have to resync when the resolution switches too). Those crappy generic scalers, Pound and Hyperlink cables, etc do it to because they literally have the same chipset most TVs use for inter scaling, only the output goes to an HDMI transmitter instead of an LCD panel. It would be big news if something cheaper than RetroTink properly handled 240p from retro consoles but people continue blissfully unaware that their Hyperkin or Pound cable is just one of those generic scalers.
    The second option is what UltraHDMI does. Most resolution-switching titles switch between 240p gameplay and mostly-static hi-res menus or pause screens. If you make no attempt to deinterlace and just digitize then output the interlaced signal as it is, it would not show interlacing artifacts on the static items except for a frame or two when drawing changes/updates. For the vast majority of mixed-resolution N64 titles, this is the best option but it makes titles with 480i gameplay appear FULL of interlace combing artifacts. Technically, it's a pure digital signal from the console being digitized perfectly but I'd be lying if I said it wasn't extremely distracting to see a baseball bat break up into a bunch of shifted lines as the batter waves it around while anticipating the pitch.
    What I'd most love to see is a hybrid where 240p is simply line-doubled and 480i is passed-thru right after a resolution switch until the properly deinterlaced frames are ready. Obviously, latency will jump and it'll need to drop a frame or so when switching back and forth unless it maintained the deinterlacing latency with 240p (please don't!), but I think it's worth it for having the best of both worlds.

The added benefit of the tink being compatible with multiple systems, and being cheaper, makes it so that I really see no downside. But this is coming from the perspective of a home user. Someone else complained about that, too. I can't hear it in my studio monitors nor headphones. There's a slight hum from my A/C (we're in a heat wave, I didn't have the choice to turn it off while recording) and so *maybe* it's that - it isn't a high-pitched noise on its own, but perhaps the noise filter/gate left a pitch there. Sorry, like I said I literally don't hear it and neither do a lot of people so it's clearly a weird frequency.

    Great video, as usual! Fortunately I'm the proud owner of a Nintendo Wii U console. That, plus Nintendo's Virtual Consoles, makes it easy to play N64 (and NES, SNES, and Game Cube) games with nothing more than an HDMI cable. It also streams well through an Elgado HD60 Pro and would probably do so with other capture cards. Sure, the nostalgia takes a hit without the original N64 console. And, as far as I can tell there's no antialiasing going on so you still get the blocky, jaggy edge thing (a good squint will cure much of that, however). But, for about the same price (and a few $$$ per game) you can pick up a used Wii U. Or for about 1/2 the price, an original Wii. Add another $20 for a pro controller and you're good to go. I suppose the quality's not going to be as good, but it's worked well for me.

    I think it's odd that anyone would want to remove AA... and then to call that "deblur" when it's particularly needed for such a low resolution and really made the N64 stand out from its peers. If anything, AA makes diagonals look sharper and higher resolution. It's the texture filtering, low-res textures, and VI Blur that make it seem "blurry." People confuse the GS/AR cheats for VI Deblur all the time but VI Deblur is something else entirely which requires a digital RGB or HDMI mod. There is no known way to disable it in software.
    Basically, Nintendo clocks the lines at 640px wide even for 320x240 resolution and creates in-between pixels by sampling the pixels on either side. This makes the boundary between pixels less distinct. AR/GS cheats cannot undo this but Borti or eTim's N64RGB or UltraHDMI can.

    Is a good idea, but too expensive for a device capable to only convert S-Video, I like S-Video, is what I use to capture, a great step up from composite, and I know that the N64 can't output native RGB, but 150 is too much, when you have the Hyperkin option that does the same for only 30 bucks...

    • @EposVox
      @EposVox  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Have you seen the image out of the Hyperkin though? It's useless. It's worse than the $40 AVerMedia I showed in this video. MJR did a comparison in his video, but I didn't even consider it an option here because it's that bad.

    • @rokero171
      @rokero171 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@EposVox but the difference is enough to cost more than 3 times the price? That's the question, the GCHD is a great product, I own one and I recommend to everyone, but this one I can't see a reason to buy, has less image quality and the same price. For less you can buy a retrotink x2 and a s-video cable... That's the point, and also the hyperkin is compatible with SNES and NTSC GameCube, what makes him worth more even with a darker image...

    • @EposVox
      @EposVox  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      ...yes I spend half this video recommending the RetroTINK 2X, I'm aware. But yes, if you at all care about a usable image quality, it's worth the price. The Hyperkin looks worse than just hooking composite up to your TV's native or adapted inputs. (Not all TVs come with it, but my 4K TV from 2017 came w/ composite adapters still)

    • @rokero171
      @rokero171 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@EposVox About composite, i'm really lucky, because I own a LCD TV that has really good composite inputs, it even recognizes as 240p, but that's not the question. About the price, what it was the biggest letdown, because I was gonna buy this thing, I really got hyped, but it doesn't work on other consoles, I was gonna buy to use on my SNES and my my N64, but 150 bucks for a device that upscales only s-video and only for N64 is too much for me, is better to save some more and get an OSSC even lacking S-video inputs, but I can always RGB mod my N64 later, but that is not the point either. The question is the lack of flexibility from the product and the fact that it only upscales S-video (I know that N64 doesn't have a clear jump in quality by going RGB), and you can only use on the N64, while there is more flexibles options for cheaper, with lower quality, but still, 1/3 of the price and works on more consoles like the Hyperkin, or price similar options that are far more flexible, like the retrotink, I don't think that the price is in the right spot, comparable to the GCHD that is awesome, isn't flexible but has great video quality.
      BTW, I love your channel, I wish I had found earlier, or I wouldn't had lost my mind setting up my Plex server 2 years ago, and now I like even more after this discution. Greetings from Brazil!!!

      @Brasileiro Patriota I hate to tell you this the universal adapter used on the snes, n64, game cube and the wii is the same connector..
      whether you use composite, component or s-video the top resolution will be had from the component cables..
      you would never go from a s-video specification because s-video has max resolution 720x576..
      now i have no clue of what the ntsc value is for s-video as a videophile from a pal region it is 720x576..
      the only way to 1080i on a console whether be the ps2, xbox, n64, game cube wii and 360 is from the component cable option, I can't tell you if progressive scan was supported on these consoles 1080p use though I pretty much think past interlaced you might have issues in supporting 1080..

    • @EposVox
      @EposVox  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can't get 1080i out of the N64 or Gamecube at all, regardless of what cables you use. Component isn't supported natively on N64, and even w/ a RGB mod it doesn't output 1080i. What are you on?

    • @jasonhowe1697
      @jasonhowe1697 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@EposVox yes I know the limitations of the n64 and various other nintendo consoles
      i was talking about the capacity of what the cables could do regardless of what the hardware limitation was..
      and I was also stating whether you use a wii, cube, n64 or snes, the multi out on these consoles would run composite, component and s-video cables
      the connector didn't change per console it was put..
      I have no clue what was supported in the US in terms of 4:3 and 16:9 aspect ratios when it comes to console use.. and various resolution standards..

    • @jasonhowe1697
      @jasonhowe1697 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @CastleMania Games understand this not many people know that you can actually run component cable that came from the cube and run it on n64 and snes same with the s-video cable..
      the only 2 consoles of that generation that cold support 1080i was the ps2 and xbox on selected titles
      what resolution was achievable vs stock rf or composite vs s-video and component if 2 different matters..
      the best resolution you can get from and snes and n64 is by using either s-video or component
      as for what these adpters use as the best transition to hdmi it will either work from component ot s-video resolution..
      as for the dip in contrast or brightness that might be a setting within that convertor box setup..
      I have acutually played a snes on s-video to know thw vast difference it has compare with rf and composite connections, and you might see improvement in using nintendos component cables on the snes and n64 as a comparison of what is seen from the HDMI options..
      the bigger question I have is what is the age of the hdmi tv's being used in this setup..
      because if it isn't 2.0 compliant it isn't going to function to well on tv's released within the last couple of years..
      As far as i can tell the multi av starting from the snes through wii should be run both s-video and component cable as the connector is the same regard what system you use it on
      also understand this until you have sampled either s-video or component on the snes and n64 what are you exactly are you comparing hdmi to in terms of resolution..
      I'm likely one of the few gamers on this planet that has used most consoles in both rf/s-video/composite/component/hdmi to know somewhat which is the best standard to view console in when comparing hdmi to various other standards
      I suspect if the ps2 had the hdmi and the original xbox had it also we wouldn't be doing these pissup comparisons between composite/component/svideo to hdmi..
      I would suspect the built for n64 use would most likely run on a snes aswell as a cube and wii
      though i doubt anyone has bothered to try it on other consoles yet..
      i still own most of my nintentdo consoles though is very much doubt most have not ventured past rf or standard av composite with their console to obtain the best resolution possible for viewing ..
      I don't know where @EpoxVox stands with original hardware and either physical console mods or some variation of convert box and cable interface as the medium to access original consoles to hdmi..
