Boyd's GunStock on Remington 597

  • I love how my Remington 597 HB shoots, but I wasn't a fan of its' "generic" OD green stock, and it was quite plain looking, and looked like every other 597 out there. Boyd's had this awesome "SS Evolution" Stock that was about $200 USD to have it shipped to Canada, which was about $230 total CDN. The look of the stock, the "Forest Camo" colour I picked, and the fact that it's now a truly free-floating barrel just makes my favourite little .22lr semi automatic all the better! The only thing I need to do is add some swivel screws so I can throw a sling on for hunting, and a bipod for bench shooting.
***To my Canadian viewers watching this video and thinking of upgrading their stock, Boyds only took a few weeks to make and deliver my stock, BUT Stocky Stocks (the company I had to buy the inserts from) DO NOT ship to Canada! :( I'm fortunate enough that I only live an hour from the US border, so I had them shipped to a depot that holds parcels for Canadians to pick up, so when it arrived at the border, I just went for a drive and grabbed it. Total price of the inserts: $6.50 US to buy them, $7.00 to ship to the border, and $40.00 gas to drive down and grab them LoL

I’ve had the stock almost 6 months now and I absolutely love it. Zero issues, and as far as accuracy goes, at 50 yards with CCI Standard velocity I shot 12 circles I traced with a quarter with 12 rounds. Flawless accuracy! 👍🏼

Inserts should be purchased with rifle from Boyds. They cost about $11 each US. No sense having to deal with two places to get your parts. Boyds will send parts anywhere they send the stocks in the same box.

Wow dude that is the coolest stock for a Remington 597 ...

ramzy1013 thanks! The colours that Boyd’s has is quite the variety too. (The only stupid thing is that you need those little plastic inserts where the screws go in the stock, and Boyd’s doesn’t provide them!)
The company that sells the $15 CDN inserts (Stocky Stocks) won’t ship to Canada, so I had to cross the border and pick them up at a post depot, and I’m an hour and a half from the border. It cost me $30 gas to pick up my $15 inserts. Haha

If you ever remove the barrel from the reciever on a 597, you may question just how much of a free-floating barrel you want.

ptschafer oh? Is it not connected very securely?

It is held snug to the reciever by one M5 machine cap screw that presses a wedge block to the barrel when tightened at the very front of the reciever. When together I cannot see it straying too far, but it would have been interesting to see a little bit more engagement between the reciever and the barrel.

ptschafer although I’ve never removed it, I have done extensive shooting with it to determine what kind of ammo it prefers. Of the cheaper, readily available ammo (no Ely/Lapua match, etc), mine does well with CCI Standard velocity. I competed in an “Outlaw Rimfire” shoot and managed the best shooting at one of the stations, hitting a 1.5” disk at 100 yards twice with 3 shots. (I came in 3rd for the day, but progressed the furthest through 2 of the 5 stations). It’s a good little gun. 🙂

@@Amaces1 That's some good shooting in a match. I agree, it is a nice rifle. I added a Volquartsen extractor to mine and ran some CCI Stingers through it... they don't group the greatest at 100 yards, after they slow through the trans-sonic range. It does however like the Federal Auto Match ammo, great groups with that and no flyers yet.

Yeah...in 2014, four years ago. But, as with everything else, costs go up. Still, you can't find as high a quality stock like this for as low a price and get it delivered in less than two weeks.

the wood finish looks great! the shape looks whack.

Jay Warren I wish the butt of the stock was about 2 inches longer, but the pistol grip makes it pretty ergonomic

bwhahahahaha! You used the number YT gun video line, "Feels really nice in the hand." You'll have to build up the stock with foam and bet wrap to get a proper cheek weld.

Lol yeah, it was the first thing I noticed. Although there was nothing “wrong” with the original stock, it wasn’t nearly as ergonomic. As for doing much else to it, I’d have to see how it’s done before I go defiling the beauty of it...... 😉

Rob Shaw the “OD green” base plastic stock, or the new Boyd’s one? (Boyd’s has tons of colour options, I chose the green just because it’s as much a hunting rifle as it is for plinking, and I thought the Boyd’s “forest camo” pattern was a good choice for the woods.) 🙂
