I just bought a 2015' 597 Heavy Barrel and I love it!! Centering the scope took me about 5 minutes and from there it was point n'shoot with remarkable accuracy up to 100 yards. What a fun little rifle. It feels robust in your hands and it devoured 250 golden bullets without a single malfunction. Cons: The trigger has no feeling and is stiff and heavy for my taste. The 10-round metallic magazine that came with it worked flawlessly at full-capacity, but the Remington 30-round plastic ones suck. I wasn't able to load more than 20 rounds in neither of them and lots of feeding problems. The rounds get caught-up with the many imperfections inside the magazine.
+xithappens That heavy barrel makes a tremendous difference. We have both - along with 8 other 22 rifles, and that bull barrel 597 is stupid accurate, dependable, reliable, balanced, fun....nothing in its class, IMHO. My "prize" 22 is a '64 Marlin 39 Mountie lever gun. It's AWESOME. The only problem? The $189 597 shoots circles around it.....or "inside it'" i should say!
The Marlin 795 is a better competor. Most of the online reviews claim it's better than the 10/22. I have a 795 which I replaced the iron sites with green ( rear) and red ( front) makes for a better site acquisition. The 10 round mags are better than the Remington's otherwise thier both very nice lower cost but accurate rifles. Oh and the Marlin does have sling mounts.
Come on guys... the mags are all tight when new but if you NEVER put the recommended rounds in you'll NEVER get them in, I have four stock mags and 2 30's and they ALL take the rounds as advertised from out of the package, tight at first... yes, today... butter... man up!!!. Agreed though, I have the Bull barrel and it's a tack driver 1"-1.5" groups at 100 yds... I would give up my 597 Sniper .22 when it's peeled from my cold dead hands.
I have the AAC-SD with the 16.5" Threaded Barrel. With the Bushnell Scope 3x9x40. I have some squirrel hunting videos. Check them out when you have time.
I like it... but like you say Ruger has all the extra upgrades and accessories available. Kinda why I'll stick with the 10 22.... I cant stand all the plastic inside these guns. I upgraded with Kidd inners.
That's because the additional two cause too many jams. Bought mine about 20 years ago and no matter how much I clean and lube there is always a jam. Banana clips are worthless unless you just want a look.
I got probably 15 ftf and jams my very first day using it. And the action lever popped out after about 50 rounds. Very disappointing, does anyone know why this may have happened?
+Tim Sharky Productions ...its the extractor.....from what I'm reading...alot of 597 owners are replacing their extractor with a Volquartsen extractor...then the problem with extracting is fixed....the action lever...from what I read is suppose to come out...so if you wish to put it into your pocket..can you imagine your out in the field hunting with this thing..and that lever popped out and gets lost...i think its an idiotic thing to do...to have this lever detach so easy just for the reason of putting it in your pockets...Remington ..if they care about their customers should offer a recall ..and send us all 597 owners a quick fix kit ..for an improved extractor plus action lever.

Any 597 owners. .oreder the volquartsen target hammer and the extractor. .at 50 yards a bic lighter is easy target. .

I had the opposite problem with the magazines... I was able to get 30 in the big one easily but couldn't get more than 8 in the 10s.

I have not tried them in my 597, but they might not have enough juice to cycle the bolt back.
But I do have a aftermarket triger becauseI like my trighers super light but Idk if that effects anything

I own this rifle and love it. Get your xtra mags at www.keepshooting.com. They are far superior to the Rem. Gen 3 mags and are 12 bucks a pop!
