I have three of these! I’ve done the same work across all three. The trigger and extractor become quick jobs once you’ve done a few. They never jam

Bought Remington 597 about 13yrs ago. great rifle. Remington discontinued a great rifle. Much better than the 10/22, very accurate . Very accurate you don't have to worry about Jams etc. I guess if i need parts I have to go to ebay. Now I know why Remington is going down the tube.

I've done the volquartsen hammer and extractor on mine too. I was getting FTE's fairly often, but had several thousands of rounds through it before it needed it. The hammer cut the trigger pull in half. The factory 10 round mags are all trash. Got a plastic one that came with it, and couldn't load more than 6 rounds in it before the spring would give up. The updated metal one isn't any better. Now I always use the factory 25 round banana mag, and it works great. My 597 would out shoot my buddies 10/22 all day every day. Wanted to make it shorter, so I had the barrel cut, crowned, and threaded. Groups grew a little after that, so she's not a nail head shooter anymore. Still plenty happy with it though, and am looking for a better barrel now. The action system on the 597 is much better than the single rod systems that the 10/22 and the Marlin 60 use. Good review Bud ✌️

Good looking gun there. Mine has the Volquartsen hammer and extractor and I also put in a set of M-Carbo springs and added an over-travel adjustment screw on the back of the trigger guard. Now the trigger is crisp and clean. These guns might still be the best bang for the buck in .22s. I had a 'smith cut and thread the bbl and I think I'm still under $300 with the scope.

      Thanks brother.
      Much appreciated. (Smile)
Sounds like You've made some pretty sweet upgrades to yours also. I've considered getting the over-travel adjustment screw for mine also.
The only problem I'm running into is finding spare mags! And If I do find them, they're way over priced! I have two, but I'd really love to have a few more. (Smile)
      Thanks for watching.
      Stay safe and healthy.
      Peace.
ps Since you've changed out your hammer and extractor (I've made the same upgrades) do you occasionally get light primer strikes?
I've had a few, but not enough to change back to the original OEM Hammer.

@@redzone1019 I've never had a light primer strike. I also polished the firing pin and the channel it rides in though. I had this gun when I was mostly unemployed and put a lot of extra time into it because it was there.😁
For magazines, there's a place called Keep Shooting. I picked up a couple mags from them and they work great. (Also polished the insides of the mags).

      Thank for the information bro.
I was almost ready to give up and sell my 597 due to the lack of mag availability. That said , I've put too much work into this gun to give up on it. (Smile)

    Hello TH-cam.
FINALLY finished the upgrades on my
    Remington 597 22lr rifle!
If you are looking for a 22lr rifle and are on a
budget... If you are willing to put in
    a little time and work...
This just might be the 22 for you!
    Thanks for watching.

When I finally went through mine because of all the FTF and ejection issues I polished the guide rods , polished the sear and I noticed how much the trigger spring looks like an AR15 hammer spring . I cut the legs shorter on the AR spring and it fit perfect it also lightened the trigger pull and I have fired every brand of ammo I could get and it fired and ejected everything without an issue . I was worried that the lighter spring would fail to strike the primers hard enough . Oh yeah I did get rid of the awful remington mags.

My 597 is still all stock after more than 20000 rounds still working flawlessly. Now I know what I can do if my extractor quits on me. Yes the trigger does suck to. I wasn’t a 💯 convinced on this gun when I bought it but it’s been a damn nice gun.

    • @redzone1019
      @redzone1019  ปีที่แล้ว +1

This is one of the best budget 22lr rifles I've owned. The stock magazines are okay.
The after market steel mags you can purchase on ebay are much better. Not great, but
      still better in my opinion.
      Thanks for watching.

Last thing about your magazine. Mine came with two of the metal mags factory from remington...That sucks you didn't get one with it!

I love my FLX. I'll love it even more when I drop the Volquartsen trigger in it.
I haven't had any extraction issues at all.
The 2 factory 10 rounders it came with have been great as have the 2 aftermarket ones I picked up. The Promag(?) 25 rd mags it came with were junk, but I'm not playing Johnny Rambo in the woods with it.
It might become my fav squirrel gun when I want to go with a semiauto.

    • @redzone1019

I agree, the 25 round Promag are only good if
you want to raise your blood pressure! Lol!
These rifle are a great deal. Especially if you're willing to
put in a little time and effort in upgrading them.
      Thanks for watching.

The hammer makes the trigger really light. Hammer super easy. It's one pin. Not hard.

      Thanks for the info.
I did finally change out the stock hammer for
a volquartsen hammer. For the price, even with the
price of a few added upgrades, this rifle is a serious
      bargain!
      Thanks for watching.

My first rifle I bought when I turned 18 back in like 04 lol. STILL need to put a new extractor in mine! I ended up joining the Army and then got all the big boy guns etc. And today I was thinking about fixing my first born lol. Great rifle! But yes horrible extractor, trigger is okish, hammer is meh. But! This rifle is crazy accurate even with just iron sights. I love yours though! What optic you got on top?

    Mines a POS jam-o-matic
Don’t bother and get a 10/22 or good clone.

Just got one given to me because would jam ALL the time and would not extract
The ectractor, spring and plunger were MIA ! No luck finding the other 2 pieces anywhere, remembered another buddy that also had a Remington 22, with a super hard trigger, spoke to him and he also gave me his 22, a 522 Viper, took both of em apart, put the extractor assembly on the 597 and fit in, "was" very excited to see if it would function. Fired about 200 rounds through it yesterday, NOT single jam/or stove pipe at all, the 597 was super dirty, which is why it was jamming so much to begin with, am pretty sure also led to the extractor assembly coming off of the bolt! Am gonna cherish this baby, already have a VQ hammer and extractor kit and a scope mount on the way for it 👍👌
