  • After 3 years we've run the trials and tribulations that is that of owning a 597.
    Marketed towards .22LR target shooters and Rimfire Precision Series shooters this rifle has some issues.

    My 597 HB shoots cloverleafs at 100m and I’ve had no issues with malfunctions, or accuracy. I have spent any money on modes. A scope and rings is the only extra money I spent on it.

    I bought a 579 heavy barrel this year . It jammed 30 out of the first fifty shots I fired then seemed to iron itself out. Now it's great, never fails to shoot. Hitting a 3"×5"plate ar 200yrds . I love it.

    I have had two 597's, both worked great. First one I got was a VTR model, sold it and bought the HB model like yours. Must have gotten lucky twice

    I bought my 597 about 14 years ago used at a pawn shop for $90. It likes CCI and Aguila ammo best. The funny thing is that it hates any Remington ammo, go figure. I also bought it because it was cheap, and intended on replacing it with a 10/22, but mine just runs and runs and I haven’t had to replace any parts after all these years. I still do not own a 10/22.

    I have had one for approx 10 years in Canada. Approx 5k rounds fired. Have original extractor and use 10 round mags.
    30 round mag not reliable and got pitched.
    The first 500 rounds it was reliable. Then I fought accuracy and reliability problems for the next 1000 rounds and 2 years. Almost ditched it several times. Learned to run the gun dry, clean it every 300 rounds and use cci mini mags. The rifle is very reliable and accurate now. I would buy another.
    Has volquartsen target hammer, worth the money to lighten trigger.

    I have own with standard barrel. At fifty yards it shoots dime size groups. (CCI mini mags.) Never had any really problems with it. Did up grade to Boyd thumbhole stock. Also took off sights and plugged the holes. Picatinny rail, Nikon scope rings and Barra hero 2-10x44 rifle scope. Standard barrel is 20 inches long. It is a tapered barrel. More like a medium heavy barrel. Thought about picking up a heavy barrel model but seems to not be as accurate from what I’ve read. Killed a lot of red squirrels with this gun. Was going to replace it with a Ruger 10/22. In fact bought one. Nothing but problems. So I sold it and kept my 597. My friend has two 10/22’s. Has problems extracting rounds. Seams to have to keep everything clean. He has spent over $500 in after market parts. He actually said to me the other day that I would be crazy to sell mine.

    Well I have 9 22lr rifles and my 597 is one of my favs, I had some malfunctions when I got it but I learn from a video how to fix the problem, when reassembling the rifle don't tighten much the rails where the bolt runs otherwise they bend slightly and the bolt doesn't run smooth, the 597 out the box was more accurate than my 10/22 and feels more like a bigger rifle.

    I could spend an hour talking about what I've done to my 597. It's a pretty steady 2 moa. Not the target model. It's a fun rifle!

  • @igotatan1

    I've had mine for about 2 years, and shot over 2K rounds, with No issues, except when I use my 22 round magz, and she gets a 6" spread at 100yrds for me, But, I really don't shoot 'her' in extreme weather, so, there's that. It's 10 round Remington magazines work flawlessly, and the two 22 round extended magz needed to be fitted. Almost have them working perfect, but not yet. I have the 20" Barrel, and Temperature is a factor after 50 rounds in secession., because the spread opens up. Other than that I like mine alot, especially the receiver design.

    I have had my 597 for 3 years, I put about 1500 rounds through per year. I clean it once a year only because I feel embarrassed about not doing that. The only miss fires I have or jams are the ammo, they are struck but do not shoot. I buy those buckets from Cabelas. If I was to wine, its because my scope keeps getting lose. Have had to re-tighten 3 times now. I would use lock tite but am worried a bout not getting the small screws out. I live in Saskatchewan, went out last week, went through 24 clips temp was -10 C, was out this morning 15 clips temp -7 c. no problems.

  • @uc5337

    I have a completely opposite experience.
    I have exactly the same rifle with 16” HB.
    Mine never jammed and it shoots amazing groups especially with CCI Mini Mags 36 Gr HP. It also likes Winchester 333 same weight and CCI Mini Mag 40 Grain round nose (copper plated).
    I took it out rabbit hunting in the winter many times and never had any issues.
    To be honest, it feels waaaay better shooting 597 than any 10/22. Way smoother.
    Yes trigger is a bit stiff but nothing to cry about. I did end up taking out some material from the barrel channel to make it a bit more free float but that didn’t cost me anything except 15 minutes of my time.
    Try testing tension on action screws, you’d be surprised how well you can tune it.

    Guess I got lucky I have two. A heavy barrel and one with open sights . A few thousand rounds thru both and no problems. Ten round mags never any problems. Only the black high capacity mag works. The clear one sucks. These rifles have shot sub MOA out of the box for me. I guess I'm lucky.

    10s of Thousands of rounds threw my 597 tack driver with almost all ammo. Maybe one in 1000 jam blame that on wobbly clip tho. For your cold problem try using lighter lube it will slide smoother. I never break down the gun to clean I just spray with Rem cleaner lube spray and blow out the dirt with air hose. Do clean the barrel regularly tho. 10/22 r good but 597 feel like your shooting a full size gun.

      I had the 17HMR that was recalled for safety reasons. I sent it in to Remington and they placed a 22WMR barrel on it at no charge. The only other option was
      a $200.00 gift cert for another Remington product. This was around 2003. Only fired once since the change and no problem. 22WMR funner to shoot vs 22LR.

    putting in volquartzen parts n doing some polishing, if it doesn't fix its issues (extraction, occasional feeding).....it dies unceremoniously.......things that don't function properly/reliably are junk, in my humble opinion.....sofar, this things pretty close to being junk, hopefully a bit of love/smithing/more money, will save it from the sawszall/bonfire pit......we'll see

    I have a Remington 597 and I have to say that it is a fucking great gun but you need to use it the right way if you want it to do its job right, so if you tell me that you had problems with this very good gun all I can say is you most of been using it wrong like I was at first before I discovered how the gun works.

    • @TrueNorthOutdoorsTV
      @TrueNorthOutdoorsTV  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      What do you mean by using it wrong?
      If a gun has a design flaw that allows thousands of people to use it in a way that induces malfunctions, I would be hesitant on saying it's a great gun.

    Why bother comparing it to the savage mk2? Isn’t that a bolt action? Apples to oranges.

    • @TrueNorthOutdoorsTV
      @TrueNorthOutdoorsTV  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I picked the 597 up as a target rifle and without preference to semi or bolt action. The Savage Mk II is one of the rifles I was considering and that I've got some experience with after purchasing the 597. If I were to do it again I'd just get a Mk II.

    • @wilfdarr
      @wilfdarr 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm in the same boat, can't decide weather to get an apple or an orange. I'm waffling between the mkII and a semi, maybe this one or the 10/22. Figured I'd take a look. Leaning more towards the mkII again.
