In todays video I look at and discuss a video called The Case Against Tattoos Part 2 from the TH-cam channel called Blue Collar Logic .
In this video instead of giving stellar tattoo advice from a logical & factual stand point, Blue Collar Logic decide to bash women, feminism and progression... yep where is the logic in that?!

I had a lecture on Ancient Egyptian a couple of weeks back for my course on Symbology of the Body. Some of the earliest mummies we have found (about 3000 years old if I remember rightly) were of tattooed women. The men who originally found these bodies presumed they were prostitutes, and yet modern Egyptologists (including the professor who was giving our lecture) actually believe these are the bodies of high class women, with the tattoos acting as protective and religious symbols (eg a tattoo of the Eye of Horus may have been used as protection against the sun and sunburn).
But hey, I'm sure some tosser on the internet knows more about the history of women and tattoos than scholars and experts who devote their entire lives to the field -.-
P.S. Also shout out to the Siberian Ice Maiden - a 2500 year old female discovered in Siberia with tattoos who is also referred to as the Ukok Princess, because even royals have tattoos :D

Thank you for saying this :).I was about to write a comment on the Siberian ice maiden. Not only was she covered in tattoos but they represent stereotypically "manly" scenes like animals fighting each others, war scenes, felines (of course no tattoos are manly but I bet he thinks those subjects are "men" tattoos only lol).
She was a royal and also a war chief.
There's also the Lady of Cao. She was a Mochica high-priestess (Moche or Mochica is a pre-inca civilization). She was covered in tattoos of spiders and snakes, symbols of fertility and power. She had a lot of jewelry and weapons so it is believed she was a warrior and ruler as well.
I love reading articles about them. Really interesting and inspiring ! Besides, reading about women like them really inspire me to stop listening to people like him. It's pretty good to be a history student and a tattoo fan lmao.
But still, I'm curious. I wonder what this douche thinks of them. oh well probably thinks they never existed to something.

I'm pissed at 1:55 where he says "some tribes even tattooed women to, but I think that was more of a master/slave thing". You respond so good lol but I'd like to add that as a Cree person who studied Inuit tattooing and Indigenous tattooing in Canada, WOMEN were the ones tattooing each other. Inuit men almost NEVER had any tattoos, maybe a few on their body
Tattooing was meant for all sorts of rights of passage, and most were on girl's faces. Beautiful designs were also tattooed on their thighs so that the first thing their baby sees when they're born is gorgeous and meaningful traditional art. Like, he literally knows nothing. Google is only a click away, buddy

Tattoos are much older than lots of people think. Some of the oldest tattoos in the world are up to 5000 years old and were found on Egyptian mummies. FEMALE Egyptian mummies who were buried as high ranking members of society were often buried in that time. They were more than likely involved in the royal families or in in high ranking religious groups in ancient Egypt. 2500 year old tattoos were also found on Ice mummies, one of the most famous of them being a so-called "princess" found in Siberia. Men and women both from these Siberian tribes were found to have tattoos that often represented religious iconography and important moments in their lives. Tattoos and the traditions and art behind them are older than Dave could ever imagine.

I normally don't comment but this just...
Women don't get tattoo except in the master slave relationship? What the heck?
My ancestors are from Okinawa and historically women got tattoos as a rite of passage. It is in memory of the princess who was captured by a Japanese noble who want to force her into marriage. To escape from this she had her people cut her hands and pour ink in to create tattoos (that the Japanese people hated). To show support of her decision women would get tattoos on their hands. It became a tradition and for any significant point in their life the women would get tattoos to celebrate it. I take great offense to his remarks as it is so ignorant and degrading to my ancestors.

Most everything in this video makes me so mad, but the "I think its more of a master slave thing" comment is really getting to me. My tribe tattooed men and women with meaningful imagery. And men and women could be warriors, hunters, farmers, caregivers or whatever they did best to help the tribe regardless of gender. Not all societies are misogynistic or require men to be the ultimate aggressor. And on a similar note, for all his talk he is most definatly not the image of a masculine man the way he describes one.

As a tattooed 21 year old female, who is studying a BSc in Biomedical Science and has been accepted into Med School after graduation, I have always entered interviews with my tattoos on show, be it my back piece, my sleeve or my shoulders/chest. I do this partly because my tattoos are a part of me and do not dictate the kind of person I am. The other reason is because if I do not get the position I am applying for because of my appearance I do not want to be associated with such people.
Being tattooed does not determine success nor failure. The stigma of tattoos is still prevalent in society today. The sooner the stigma and beliefs that body modifications are taboo are gone from society, the better

Covering self harm scars, remembering a loved one, a quote to live by, having a piece of art on their body that makes them feel less insecure and my personal favourite, having a piece of art that's so beautiful and important that you would never want to ruin it with a relapse. I wasn't doing so well this year, but I still went and got a new tattoo because I save about $100 a month for months so I can get a tattoo when I want. Like other people have a "fun money" savings, I have the same thing for tattoos. People like to assume that because you don't make that much that you shouldn't be spending money on what you want. Bullshit. Everyone needs to live their life. For me my new tattoo made me feel great about myself when I was really stressed about everything else. It's important to take care of yourself when you are on the daily grind ☕

Vanessa, good on you! It's like people saying poor people shouldn't buy a treat or save for nice shoes or something. No. Most everyone deserves to be happy, whatever that means for them. If you cannot enjoy anything because you have minimal extra means or hardly any means at all, where is the motivation to continue on in life and contribute and be part of society? Should life for the less financially well off be nothing but work, scraping by and having the bare minimum needed for survival? We deserve nice things, too, be that a tattoo or a nice pair of shoes or a steak or whatever it is that makes daily life worth working through. Saving a hundred a month is no small accomplishment. I manage to save about twenty a month after everything is taken care of. That's with careful spending, buying food that makes many leftover meals, etc. And I'm so proud when I can take my savings and go do something with it, just as you should be! Also, congrats on the new tattoo!

I hate that people like him act like attitudes like his are part of what it means to be working class (blue collar). Tolerance and a belief in equality and... a love of art etc etc aren't being fancy, they're values and traits that belong to everyone who puts their mind to them.
It's sinister that people like that guy are essentially telling working class men that they're not entitled to consider themselves blue collar unless they're anti-progress, narrow-minded, and emotionally repressed.
It is a bit of a weird time to be a man in some ways, imo, especially with the economy and employment market being the way they are now, when "providing" has traditionally been seen as such a big part of masculinity. So there are a lot of vulnerable young men out there who could be really damaged by the kind of nonsense that guy is coming out with.

I loved reading about the explanation on Christian views of tattoos. I am Christian, love God, but I also love tattoos, have quite a few myself, and don't feel any less close to God because of them. People telling me they were "wrong" are the ones who made me question the Bible's view on tattoos in the first place, but they never managed to give me good reasons as to why I "should not" have beautiful drawings on my beautiful body.

With the whole “tattoos are just a fad” in some ways STYLES of tattoos go in and out of fashion such as tramp stamps or tribal in 50 years perhaps traditional tattoos wouldn’t be as common and new styles would be created and be more popular in that time. So perhaps STYLES AND TYPES of tattoos can be considered fads that doesn’t mean that people can’t get a tattoo just cause it’s “out of fashion” tattoos as a whole are always going to be a thing

Love your videos - not normally one to leave comments, but wanted to add some info to the Biblical stuff you had in this one.
As a note, I am a Christian and I am tattooed (4 tattoos and counting).
A lot of people pull up the Levitical laws (from the book of Leviticus) in arguments about tattoos. The laws in that book also prohibit wearing different types of fabrics together and how when a woman is on her period they are unclean for x amount of days and how touching anything dead makes a person unclean for x amount of days etc. There are a lot of laws in this book that most modern people are happy to ignore until it comes to tattoos and then they cherry pick this lovely little verse to insult tattooed people.
Now it's true, the Bible does say not to cut yourself or mark yourself etc. And the comment you read was 100% accurate that it was largely in part due to nearby cultures that used these as methods of worship to their own gods. The God of the Israelites provided this and some similar laws to try and help keep their focus on the one true God so they wouldn't fall away.
Additionally most of the Levitical laws dealt with cleanliness and periods of unclean in an effort to protect the people from things science wouldn't catch up to for hundreds of years. There's loads to back this up and even evidence that diseases of the time didn't impact the Jewish population as much on account of these laws.
Furthermore in the New Testament Jesus states that he came to "fulfill the law" effectively saying that all these laws that the people adhered to so strictly were essentially put aside for the new covenant (law) that Jesus brought. In otherwords, Jesus himself didn't say "no tattoos", he said "love thy neighbor" tattooed or not.
So with that I'm going to continue to rock out with my tattooed self at Church while wearing two different types of fabric and possibly *gasp* on my period.
Keep it up with the awesome videos.
PS - it's pronounced Cane-an. But said kinda fast - Canaan.

That Dave "guy" makes me so proud about my grand dad. He was the most progressive person from early 30s I've ever seen. He lived a life that Dave could look up to, he used to be farmer, providing to his family and enhancing the farm to be passed out to next generation. Just like he got the farm being in better shape than what it was when his father got it.
During the 2nd world war there was lots of refugees from parts of occupied land that were forced to move out from their homes. They were generally seen as filth or lower tier citizens (as the nation was just 20 years since everybody got equal rights, like Finland used to do auctions for disabled people...) However, one of those refugees ended up being my grand mother. My grand dad broke all the social norms that this Dave tries to keep up. 75 years ago! The world wasn't like that, ever.
Me, my girl friend and my sister have tattoos, and I've only heard compliments and questions did they hurt. I'm so glad that my family doesn't have the mold balls like that douche.
(Only thing my grand dad didn't ever quite understand was organic farming. As when he was kid, that was the norm, and it didn't provide as much food as using fertilizers would)
