This is exactly what I'm doing, rushing the downswing. This is a great 👍explanation. I never realized what I was doing because I never really understood this movement
This video helped me so much with my consistency right away. Got a lot more distance too. My arms were always going ahead of my hip turn causing my lead knee to lock before hip rotation and standing up topping the ball often. Excellent tip, drill and explanation. Thank you, Eric. You are a great coach.
Amazing drill that fixes so many problems; pulls, slices, off center hits, flipping, less curve on the ball due to more body rotation, more power etc etc. gold! Thanks
use to shoot in the hundreds, then got frustrated and quit. decided to retool entire game from ground up...so for 2 months I did nothing but watch TH-cam videos (mostly ERIC) and hit the range. wow what a difference that made. now, I'm a bogey golfer and hit in the high 80's low 90's and it was amazingly quick and easy. now I am focusing on becoming a 70's golfer and am super confident. Eric, you are amazing.
This explanation makes so much sense to me. I can feel my body working with these drills. Eliminating tension has been the other thing I’m trying to do. The harder I grip the club and tighter I feel the more I rush my swing. I want a smooth effortless swing but it’s all out of sequence. I was doing better before the last lockdown but as a fairly inexperienced golfer have never truely understood the body feels of a good swing. I’m keen to get back to lessons again.
I'm so new at golf that I haven't even practiced chipping. All I've done so far is I've bought a used starter set (left handed) and have been watching TH-cam videos and reading everything golf. I can honestly say that Eric's videos have been the most helpful so far. Thanks Eric.
I’m a high handicapper going through a swing change now. A swing coach told me that my active arms and hands were causing me a lot of problems with control. This video was incredibly helpful. The drills that reinforce the feeling you want - combined with the physical feedback you describe (bicep pressure on pec) helped on my first trip to the range. Now I need to groove that feeling and break those old habits. Thanks!
Great set of drills here, as a man who lighted a ton of weights in my younger years its been more difficult to feel that that stretch in the left shoulder and arm. "Big muscles are great for bending bars but useless for hitting golf balls" Adam Sandler in Happy Gilmore 1995. These specific drills have giving me a totally new feeling of where my power is being generated from. The sequence of movement has allowed me for the first time to check if I'm doing things in the right order, from the top of the back swing. I just wanted to say, as someone who watches a lot of golf video content, your videos are a huge step up from the rest of the stuff out there. Most of it is just way too general and the same old descriptions of movements that frankly don't help. The problem is and always will be in golf lessons that we each feel things differently. My recommendation to all is find one or two teachers on you tube and stop there, too many ways of describing the same movements will only make things more confusing and less helpful after a while. Great job on your video Eric truly a step up in terms of usable content that doesn't hold back on the "secrets" or info that's at the heart of each issue. I'd love a full on lesson but times are tuff and the coronavirus is everywhere. Stay safe America, and the world. we are in this together.
After watching in slow mo, you move hip forward and start looking up before impact. Your drills have all been magic for me personally. I try to completely forget my arms exist which works about 90% of the time, not great but this is a work in progress.
This is an absolute game-changer and has given me more insight into the mechanics of the swing. I wondered why I had to almost stop at the top to get solid contact and yet great players seem to swing in tempo and fluid with speed and power. It's not that I was rushing, it's my sequence and mechanics were incorrect. When they are off it feels like I am rushing but when I keep my arms in place and properly rotate the body first I have solid contact consistently and never have to think about pausing. This is another reason why I am a member of Eric's site and a student of his teachings. The improvement in my swing and game has been the greatest in the shortest amount of time with Eric.
Not only does this seem to be a great drill for the rushed downswing but as I was swinging in my office at work (shhhh) I felt as though this helped me from sliding laterally. I've been battling sliding my entire life and the description of the left knee in the down swing flexing and rotating really seemed to stabilize me. Great drill Eric. Looking forward to hitting the range.
Brilliant Eric! I have never seen this explained anywhere else. I think I have seen this same move when major league baseball players are at bat. When should the left arm separate from the body? Thanks.
This is one of my major faults amongst others. As soon as I get too the top I feel very uncomfortable and can’t wait to release the tension with my arms. I also fire and spin out the hips at the same time not really getting the pressure to the front. Sometimes I feel like I’m never going to get the sequencing right, but I’ve had this video bookmarked forever and keep coming back to it over and over trying to improve. Eric you are a fabulous coach. You explain everything so clearly and how you teach really resonates with me.
I'm so glad I just found this video and your one on tempo. My goal is to try and get my tempo much slower in 2022. Mainly because I've had enough of the poor golf I've been playing lately.
Another great Video Eric. Thanks a lot for that. What helps me here is thinking of doing the transition, means the start of the downswing at the same speed as the backswing. This feels at the end very slow and is quite difficult as you really need trust in you swing (especially on shots over the water :-) ). But the same speed on backswing and downswing-start/transition leads to a perfect sweetspot = a lot of distance. The downswing is then lead by the though of moving/walking through the ball (as Gary Player uses to talk about). I think the transition speed is the key to play really good and consistant golf.
It’s all good, Eric. I know the feels or sensations you suggest here. I have had them, and they worked beautifully, for a time. I suspect something else crept into my swing that sent me off in search of a new swing key that would unlock my inner Hogan, such as John Jacobs or Jim Flick telling us the only way to reach our full potential is to swing our arms. I am 74 years old and my search began with Hogan’s five fundamentals and every Golf and Golf Digest
Excellent advice. My game has been going backwards. I've been working so hard on my swing. I think to much. Your explanation about the down swing really showed me things I was not doing. Like establishing the flex in my posture. That is why I lift up to soon. Thanks so much. You teaching is very clear and easy to follow. Phil Matton Palm Bay FL age 78
Thanks, Phil! Appreciate the kind words! Glad to hear youre heading back in the right direction. 1-2 things at a time and keep it SIMPLE!! Hope you continue to enjoy the game!
Wow. The hands feeling like they are going up and back as I start my squat...that's so unlike any thought I've ever heard but it makes sense when you show it. I cannot break the habit of my hands attacking that ball and coming over the top. Going to try "hands up and back" thought
This is spot on. Most amateur golfers need to learn to hit the ball with their lower body - dead arms that are moved with lower body motion, not the other way around. Very difficult to overcome after years/decades of trying to generate speed with arms/upper body. Takes thousands of reps to start to build new muscle memory.
It depends on the frequency of those reps. More toward everyday can see nice changes in 1-2 months. Once per week-several months. Can make it LOOK better in 1 swing...I'm talking starts to slowly become your normal with less and less conscious thought.
I'm impressed with the left leg squat initiating the downswing. It minimizes the lower body slide and provides better control of the hands, arms and shoulders starting the downswing. I think the pause at the top would effect tempo.
Great video Eric, this is exactly what my problem is. I can get it right about 3/10 times. When I do it’s a beautiful feeling to see the ball go where I want it to. I will try both of these drills today, the pause at the top is something I try to do but tend to forget when thinking about all the other aspects of the the swing.
This was epiphany for me...Yesterday I went 2 holes birdied the first hole a par 5 par , stuck it to 2' ...Par on the second. Then went back to my old ways. The feeling I had tho for those first 2 holes was the first in 33 years where it felt effortless and perfect. I'll get out on the range and just work on this feeling...I always get a kick of watching something thinking about it , and than doing it even without practicing it...For 2 holes I felt like I couldn't miss. Thanks a lot for the lesson.
Great video once again Eric, giving an explanation which I've not seen elsewhere. Can I ask would the same effect be achieved with the thought 'keep the R/shoulder back in Transition' or 'Keep your back facing the target as long as possible'? Regards James
Thanks for this video-it's great. Feel like maybe a better descriptor is "starting the downswing before being finished with the backswing" is a better description of the problems, almost like throwing the automatic transmission into drive when the car's in reverse. I've noticed I do this when I get impatient on the course behind slower players and later in the round when I'm tired. Once again really helpful video.
Great video Eric, I’ve been using a Whippy Tempomaster to help smooth out my transition. You can’t swing fast from the top w a Whippy and make good contact
Great, very detail and is what exactly i need because i always rushing my downswing with hands and arms first instead of the body. I know about it but difficult to change
Took me so long to embrace this. I just couldn't come to grips with the idea of "stalling" the hands and arms and rotating the hips to start the transition. It felt so unnatural to me and I just couldn't get on board. Now that I've fully incorporated this concept into my swing the difference is pretty remarkable. I feel less like I'm swinging *at* the ball and more *through* the ball, if that makes any sense. I'm also far less prone to hard pulls and fat shots, and my smash factor and compression are way up. Good stuff here.
Great video! I used to play a lot, down to a stable 5 hcp. Now I have not played for 12 years, started to practice this spring again. My main issue now is that I'm way to "handsy", ie rushing it. -And I'm struggling to get my body into the swing, or our of the way. I have just not managed to find the right feeling. This drill looks really promising! -Thank you!
@@CogornoGolf Thank you! It's getting there. The feeling of pushing my arms up as I transition to the down swing gives a feeling of all the time in the world to hit the ball. :-)
I’m dying to try this drill. I’m a lefty and hit my irons pretty well, but I have always sliced my drives. I’ve tried a ton of corrections with my grip, club path etc. I did notice when I slowed my back swing down, the slice improved. I never thought about the knee turn, but I can see how it help that downward swing path and perhaps straighten my slice. Going to give a go this weekend!
What about footwork ? If I have a Right foot raising up in backswing, should I plant before uncoil with body ? There has to be a stabilizer to use or push with lower body leading correct ?
Hey Drew! If you are a right hander your right foot certainly should not raise up in the backswing. Left foot would be ok. Here is some more on foot/leg work that may help...I would have to see your swing to offer specific advice for you th-cam.com/video/pdRisKYTAjc/w-d-xo.html th-cam.com/video/wKNX_7tkN5o/w-d-xo.html th-cam.com/video/brnUbcu9lnQ/w-d-xo.html
Thanks for effective explanation. My weekend golf always up and down and mostly 65% down as my chronic habit of snatching from the top of the back swing cannot be eliminated. Is there any best drill to do to remove my chronic bad snatching from the top? I once try like Matsuyama swing as I paused at the top for 2-3 second but it can do only at driving range and I still come back to get snatching at golf course that too terrible for me to change it. Please advise.
Hey! Thanks for the message! Unfortunately for this instance I think I would need to see video of your swing. I would need to see exactly what happens when you say you "snatch" it....that could mean a bunch of different things and could be caused by a bunch of different reasons..so I cannot advise based on just that If you don't get it sorted check out cogornogolf.com premium membership so that I can see your swing and can advise then!
I do like this. Once I get the trail hip moving back and the club feeling "on plane", I have more confidence to let my body start the downswing. It's amazing how much better contact and ball flight have improved as well as clubhead speed. This is good!
What you are teaching here reminds me of a feeling I read about years ago but cannot remember the instructors name. He suggested when we reach to top of the backswing and begin the downswing to feel as if we are increasing the shoulder turn. It is only a feel because the shoulders will in fact be moving forward. We are talking milliseconds before the right shoulder fires through. It feels lazy and this may be where the term pause at the top comes from. Am I making sense, Eric?
Eric, this is the ticket, I'm a golfer who has a lot of feel in my swing to the point of when I have a good downswing I have good balance / rhythm , But I'm also a hyper guy so at some point (and I always do), I'll start to speed up downswing and get out of rhythm , Now I have a way to control that feel and speed on my downswing . Great Drill!
Eric-great video. My issue is that I get the club waist high and then my knees slide forward preventing me from completing my backswing and of course my swing is completely out of sequence so I thin my shots without any power. My instructor says I am also pulling the handle. Suggestions? What’s the weather like at your course mid November as heading south then for the winter
Hey Brian! I have plenty of suggestions, but I would have to see your swing to say for sure what you're actually doing and advise you how to improve. Check out Cogornogolf.com if you cant get it sorted....thats where you can post your videos and I can help...premium membership I would suggest
Great video. Something I need to work on. It would be helpful if you also showed some slow motions of your swing as it is hard to really see what you are doing in your swing. It happens so quickly. I love how you explain what you should be feeling in any given movement.
Thanks a lot and it very helpful to improve my golf swing. One question that if left arm is too weak (Not straight and too soft) can it be loss of feeling of lower body streght of initiating my down swing? ( bcoz I found my left arm too weak and difficult to find feeling of starting down swing by lower body) Again thanks in advance
@@CogornoGolf Thanks Eric. I will practice upon seeing your width drill and let me feed you back. I am sure my swing, especially lost feeling of stretching downswing by lower body will be recovered as well. Thanks
Eric awesome as usual really man good stuff!! Eric i was wondering if you have a class on contact at the ball ,, to me it all comes down to contact I feel if I don't get correct ball speed it feels horrible!! Thanks again Eric your the man!!!
Thanks, Kevin! We have A LOT of videos on a lot....contact included. BUT contact is too broad a subject....too many variables to guess why the contact may be off. Would have to SEE your swing to help guide...to identify 1-3 SPECIFIC things that need to be done to help contact...could literally be 100 things that could cause bad contact Check out www.cogornogolf.com so you can post your swing and I can see and help!
Using the drill also with my left arm basically staying against my chest, helped me with my arms going out over the line. This was also a huge problem for me. I was a arms and hands player for years and changing to a rotational player has increased my distance and power but the old habits are hard to break.
Thanks again Eric. What's your thoughts about... from the top of the downswing trying to get the right elbow in/below the left elbow (rotate shoulder helps) in first part of downswing feels like it delays the rush to swing(swipe) at the ball and gets a more in sequence downswing on plane? Is that the same or similar result the up and back is trying to achieve?
Well....thats more complicated that a simple answer.... Are you REALLY making that move when you are FEELing that? If not....to what extend are you? 50%? How/where your right arm should be depends on several factors....club face angle, grip, side bends, etc I would really need to see your swing to say if this would work for you....has to match the other parts. A lot of people try and over do this and dont have other pieces to match (more tilted down clubface) and get worse! th-cam.com/video/OJppwDGvhmY/w-d-xo.html th-cam.com/video/TtRDa3s7Bwo/w-d-xo.html th-cam.com/video/cKz2-yn5R2o/w-d-xo.html
This video is really teaching me “ effortless power.” BTW , I counted. The lady in white in background is stopping four seconds at the top of her backswing.
It's crazy how different your tips are than a lot of the other instruction on YT. You don't get this elsewhere. Great work.. much appreciated.
Appreciate it my friend!
That might be the best explanation of "feels" that I have heard.. Hallelujah!!!!

I feel less like I'm swinging *at* the ball and more *through* the ball, if that makes any sense. I'm also far less prone to hard pulls and fat shots, and my smash factor and compression are way up. Good stuff here.
Love it! Thanks for watching!
Great explanation as always. Thank you!! Question, does this apply to uneven lies? Tx
Thanks, Sheila! Yep in terms of these swing mechanics it would apply for all shots
Thanks man, great vid.
Thank you!
Great video, love the up and back feel at the top. Keep it up Eric. One of the best channels on TH-cam.
Thanks, Bryan! Appreciate it!
-Thank you!
Hope you get it sorted my friend and continue to enjoy your golf!
Hope it helps!
Here is some more on foot/leg work that may help...I would have to see your swing to offer specific advice for you

I would need to see exactly what happens when you say you "snatch" it....that could mean a bunch of different things and could be caused by a bunch of different reasons..so I cannot advise based on just that
If you don't get it sorted check out cogornogolf.com premium membership so that I can see your swing and can advise then!
I do like this. Once I get the trail hip moving back and the club feeling "on plane", I have more confidence to let my body start the downswing. It's amazing how much better contact and ball flight have improved as well as clubhead speed. This is good!
Yessir!
Awesome, had to watch it twice. Can't wait to try it tomorrow. Thanks 😊
Haha hope it helps, Robert :)
fantastic topic and explanation for us duffers. can't wait to get working on it.!
Yessir
Useful analysis
Thanks, Melissa!
Yes...love that for most people!
Great instruction!! Thanks!!!
Hope it helps, Brad!
Nice video. I’m gonna practice that tomorrow
Thanks Felipe!
Good stuff Eric.
Appreciate it!
Great video. Something I need to work on. It would be helpful if you also showed some slow motions of your swing as it is hard to really see what you are doing in your swing. It happens so quickly. I love how you explain what you should be feeling in any given movement.
Thanks Linda-appreciate the feedback!
You are quite welcome!
Yes...you are going to want to lengthen that out. Here is a good drill to start: th-cam.com/video/7qpgswfeHJc/w-d-xo.html
@@CogornoGolf Thanks Eric. I will practice upon seeing your width drill and let me feed you back. I am sure my swing, especially lost feeling of stretching downswing by lower body will be recovered as well. Thanks
Yes. This helps. Another good feel is to feel like the left shoulder gets over the left ankle before the arms move down
👊
Swing looks smooth and rhythmic when you do these drills. Great tips!
Thanks, Jack!
Excellent tips! Thanks!
Our pleasure!
Another great lesson this really worked for me I’m getting way better contact and distance is crazy long
Love to hear that! Thanks!
Wow! Excellent explanation Eric!
Thanks, man! Appreciate it!
Would have to SEE your swing to help guide...to identify 1-3 SPECIFIC things that need to be done to help contact...could literally be 100 things that could cause bad contact
Check out www.cogornogolf.com so you can post your swing and I can see and help!
Nice as always. Thanks!
Thanks, Omar!
Good instruction.... thank you so much...
My pleasure!
Top class as always!
Thanks!
Using the drill also with my left arm basically staying against my chest, helped me with my arms going out over the line. This was also a huge problem for me. I was a arms and hands player for years and changing to a rotational player has increased my distance and power but the old habits are hard to break.
You're heading in the right direction!
How/where your right arm should be depends on several factors....club face angle, grip, side bends, etc
I would really need to see your swing to say if this would work for you....has to match the other parts. A lot of people try and over do this and dont have other pieces to match (more tilted down clubface) and get worse!

@@CogornoGolf I agree a look at my swing is the best solution. ... thanks for the video links ... very grateful for your videos.
Hey Eric would this help with turning a fade/slice into a straighter shot?
Probably not...I would check the videos relating to squaring a club face first and then going "the best drill I've ever seen" station after that
Great explanation! At top the hand go up and back.....
Thanks! Hope it helps!
Hardest working man on the internet...good stuff..
Haha thanks, Roy! Mary and I like to keep busy :)
When you get that torque you can really feel it! 6:42
👊
Thanks for watching!
OK great thank you love the videos putting some into practice this week
Awesome!
This video is really teaching me “ effortless power.” BTW , I counted. The lady in white in background is stopping four seconds at the top of her backswing.
Hope it helps!
This is gold!!! Another great drill I’m looking forward to implement.
Thanks, Garry! Hope it helps!!
Exactly the fix I’ve been looking for Eric! Thank you
No problemo!
