This short clip captures all the main things that are holding me back. When I'm playing well, I can feel the club (my wrists) load at the top during transition, but that requires tension in the right places (joints) which requires perfect balance and rhythm. For me, timing, balance, and rhythm are all crucial to sound play, and sadly, I fell like not nearly enough YT instructors talk about these things enough. Thanks, Adam! Oh, and I had the pleasure of playing Mediterra several years back and it was truly a treat!

Learning how to let the club 'hang back' in my downswing is one of the main things that I've finally learned to revolutionize my game. It's just a hard thing for people to feel. I'm teaching my dad right now and he has none of this at the current moment. I'm going to get him to do that little in the fingers 8 iron drill you suggested to get him to better feel that clubhead lag, magical move that is so elusive for so many people. Thank you Mr Bazzelget(probably spelled that all wrong) for all your great tips.

Adam, what can I say, you are the BEST! Your instruction is always insightful and spot on. I've got the Lag Shot now and that has been able to help with not rushing the downswing. Best tip if you will from this video is "continue to store power on the downswing". I was always releasing the stored power way too early. Thanks again.

Adam, best advice I ever got...relax...get a certain feel...look for it in a larger swing...FORGET ABOUT THE OUTCOME...dissolve the 'hit instinct' and clear my mind probably helped the most. I've made much better contact with the ball with much less effort. I try not to think about what I'm doing and ironically, much of the time the outcome is even better. Thank you! Still work to do.

As pretty much most of us, one of my misses is due to jerking the club over the top.
I try and trick my body to do a more natural rhythm by very slightly pausing at the top of my backswing.
It allows me to “notch the arrow” and facilitates a more natural downswing.
It’s a constant struggle, so I look forward to checking out some of these drills as well.
    Thanks!

the more I relax my arms and hands during a swing, the better I swing. It's really easy for me to over grip and tense up during a swing. unless I'm actually paying attention to that...It doesn't feel as if I'm doing it / I was surprised at the distance I was getting from an iron by staying relaxed- opposed to trying to blast the ball.

Great tip about the fingers at the bottom of the handle. The too tight death grip is a killer...just like driving while holding a steering wheel. It's amazing how much of the swing seems as though it is to be more supple than aggressive. My dad used to ask me "what's your hurry" during the downswing but there is no urgency. Thanks for the tips!

I discovered the sensation of pivoting your body with my swing quite by accident during a practice session recently and noticed the improvement immediately on the course. Being a new golfer I wasn't sure what I was doing was right, because well, I have tried a lot of weird things along the way so far. Thank you for this clear explanation of a concept I hope to work on as I practice.
Also, I love Molinari as an example! Of all the guys on tour, it seems as if his swing is "intentional and designed to hit the ball consistently as much as possible". I would also use Louis Oosthuizen and Adam Scott as examples of this.

It depends on what your tendencies are. The goal is good form, and sequence with all the moving parts. If you are a player (most aren't) whose lower body gets to jumpy and you can't get the club caught up, then it might me a good thought.

Excellent video! Tons of great information. I hope people take what you said seriously. Its difficult for most of us guys to relax and turn down our testosterone. But when I do, the ball goes further and straighter every time.
I would like to request your take on the mental aspect of the game. I have read some sports psychology books and I have averaged 5 strokes better, sometimes 10 strokes better. No more 1st tee jitters and when I cant warm up I actually start better than ever before.

Great vid, again! I would say the majority of mid-high handicappers would benefit from slowing down the swing. When I get it right and get the swing into the 'slot' the rest of the swing seems effortless, smooth and much better club head speed! If only I could get it consistently and not fall back into trying to smash the ball, I'd be in single figures! 🏌😤

Good tips. I’m working on starting my downswing with lower body before reaching the top with my hands. I’m sure this messes with timing. Should I slow down some on the course, or just forget about the change when playing ?

    • @Scratchgolfacademy
      @Scratchgolfacademy  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Peter,
I'd work on the range towards not thinking (that is to say, not mapping it out with your conscious mind) while swinging. The mind can do this with practice. You can (and likely should) have a clear intention, then relax and let it happen.
      Hope this helps.
      Best, Adam

Adam, a wonderful video. I have a question on something I struggle with. I don't know how to keep centered around my my core as you show here, and shift my weight to the front on the downswing. Any suggestions/videos I should look at? Thanks again!

I have a number of videos on the pivot, and the start of the downswing at this channel, I hope you'll find them helpful.

I think the loading tip is great for improving lag. Add this drill with an impact bag for forward shaft and you’re on your way.

A slow motion clip of each described instruction would be extremely helpful

What is your thought Adam on lifting the left heel a little on the backswing to trigger hips first in downswing by stamping the heel down?

As a "better" player all my life, I always played with "better" players too. And as we struggled individually, we always told each other "you are too quick today". And quickness always comes when you have not recently played very much. I lived about 400 feet from the first tee of my private CC. And I ALWAYS walked over to the golf course to tee off very slowly. If I did hit a couple of wedges as I walked over I swung very slowly too using lots of late hit delay. Walking over there to the first tee I was just like Julius Boros was all the time. I arrived at the first tee with slowness pre-programmed into my brain before I got there. And I literally always hit a very good first tee shot right from the get go. In fact, I was so confident I liked to show off before others waiting to go next. BTW - We did not have much of a practice range.

Hi Adam, do you have an instruction to stop dipping into the down swing?

Hi - my coach has recently noticed that I am over rotating my hips in the backswing and I simply cannot clear my hips in time with the rest of my swing - leaving me flipping and blocking. I notice that Mols right knee stays flexed during the backswing - do you have any guidance to share?

    • @Scratchgolfacademy
      @Scratchgolfacademy  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Andy,
There are different styles of swing, some with more hip pivot in backswing (say, Bobby Jones) than others. That said, I agree that you want to build some resistance between upper and lower as you go back. The trail hip should go back (away from ball) and up a bit, which means the right leg will straighten some.
      Hope this helps.

Adam, what are thoughts on the Orange Whip?

      Christopher,
I like the Orange Whip. I think it gives a nice feel for storing energy in the club, and then for releasing it.

@@Scratchgolfacademy Thank you. I tend to rush at the top with my hands and arms and load the shaft and pull the ball. The whip seems it would help that.

Good stuff, let the club head energy build...then sweep it through, once you learn to trust it...your game will improve.

Love these drills especially the pivot drill which has stopped me ‘swaying’ off the ball and got me turning properly.

Completing the backswing is another way. Many never get to the top of backswing, or finish, and begin downswing too soon. Timing issue. I implement a tiny pause or "rest" at the top and then the pushing the ground with my feet/hands "dropping in" motion. Sitting down on the shot. The delay at the top of the backswing allows the proper initiation of the next critical move; the down (and in) swing. Try to hit it hard, though, is 90% of the reason for a hurried, over the top, downswing.

I really move off the ball in the backswing. Would love to be able to turn my shoulders 90 degrees and stay fairly centered.

Your right hip moves directly away from the target line, think about pushing your hip joint back not "around". Around will cause a sway, a pivot directly away from the target line will keep you centered
