I've wondered about this for years while standing at address over the ball and never heard anyone address the upper arm vs lower arm rotation positions. Your explanation is the only one AND one of the best videos I've ever seen regarding the golf swing period! You are a genius!

Haha thanks, Ken! Hope it helps my friend!
The GRIP you have effects this some. Stronger grip elbow will be more toward target, weaker more toward you.

Thanks so much for this! Of all the hundreds of instructional videos I've seen over decades of poor golf, this has single-handedly transformed my swing -- no exaggeration. The mechanical technique is so expertly explained that it clarifies any backswing questions that I've had for a long time. Cheers!

More gold from Eric. If you focus on activating your core and chest, your arms will soften a bit (less tension void)...I can’t wait to try this on the range. You’re the best TH-cam golf instructor I’ve found and grateful for what you do.

Best takeaway video on TH-cam! About 10 minutes in, the real magic is shown. Grab your lead arm just above your elbow by trailing hand, then pull it back. That will give you a great function move to replicate on your normal backswing. Thanks Eric!

This has the feel of one of those 'well kept secrets' that very good players rarely talk about. Yes, we have all heard about 'elbows in' and 'avoid chicken wings' etc, but your simple routine for sorting this properly at address is brilliant. I have been using the technique religiously for my last 3 rounds and it has had the effect of keeping my iron shots remarkably strait, where I have always had a tendency to slice. The noticeable thing for me is that it creates an in-built "coiled spring" feeling at address (left bicep, if you are right handed), which prevents your brain from trying to hit the ball too hard. A subtle change to the grip, but a true Eureka moment. Thanks for sharing!

I just started golfing this past summer. I am suffering, what I guess is, the typical ups and downs of a beginner. About three weeks ago, through trial and error, I changed my wrist hinge move and began striking my irons much more consistently. I played my best round ever on December 30th (A warm December day in Kentucky was like a late Christmas gift.). Unfortunately, I was down for a week or so with Omicron. When I started swinging my clubs again, I was shanking and thinning 60-70% of my shots. I was trying everything, but couldn’t figure out what had changed. I watched this video last night and it just made sense and I was convinced this is what had changed. I had gotten a little lazy and “flat” in my backswing. I hit 20 or so balls this morning and only shanked 2 or 3. A few more sessions and hopefully muscle memory will kick in. Thank you for explaining it so well. I have subscribed to the channel and will recommend it to my friends.

Kinda funny that you posted this today as I just discovered this exact thing last night watching videos of Brooks Koepka’s driver swing. I think it’s important to realize that you can keep the clubhead outside your hands in the backswing and it not solve your transition problems, i.e. you can still roll your left arm over too much at the top. Which is where this video comes in. For me, I have to feel like I’m pushing the handle back with my left hand faster than the clubhead is moving back. Thanks for all the videos Eric. You guys rock.

I've been playing golf for 40 years, some really good, some not so much. In all my years I've played with my left elbow pointed at the target and bicep pointed across my chest. Lately I've been losing control of the clubhead at the top of the backswing so badly that Im completely steep coming down. I've tried everything, flattening swing, outside in, stack & tilt etc, and ending up with worse results every time. What an epiphany this is, I cant thank you enough! This is pure brilliance!

I even invested in a swing arc to build muscle memory, which works, but not as easily as this tip worked. I went to the range yesterday (twice) and was shocked at how well this tip worked in just a few swings. It also helped me to stay over the ball and not sway on the way back. Hi, Eric. Thanks for the tip of keeping one's elbows turned down. I tried it at the range today with very interesting results. First, it felt very awkward. I think that is because I don't have a lot of flexibility and it's a new setup for me. My elbows normally want to face outward. However, when I tried your suggestion, I was making a much nicer contact with the ball, especially with the driver. I noticed from the setup that it basically forced my body to turn. Whereas before, I was just turning from my shoulders. Thanks again. E.J.

This is the best swing key I've seen for my swing on the internet. Eric, thanks so much. I've always known that I was fanning the club too open on my backswing and I always keyed on fixing the forearm part. Thumbs up on backswing, etc. Even with that I still struggled with getting inside the swing plane and then staying there through impact. Never had solid contact as I had to flip my hands at the ball. I never even considered the left shoulder rotation and where my elbow points as a swing key to keep my backswing on plane. This one video has made all the difference in the world to me staying on plane going back and staying square through impact. Such solid strikes! Thank you!

Eric’s left elbow visual tip is working wonders with my set-up into takeaway into backswing into downswing and through contact. Cinching elbows close and then slightly rotating left forearm gets me into proper set-up. Then Eric’s visual on where left elbow faces on takeaway up to backswing resolved my positioning issues. A few range sessions and two rounds in-my iron play is vastly improved. Aim. Distance. 3-wood is money. Thanks for this critical intel. So simple. Instant results.

@@CogornoGolf I would add that I also incorporated your Two Takeaway tips. One, using tee in shaft end and keeping it close to right thigh on takeaway and making sure the handle doesn't get away from the body. All combined: they help me to "get vertical" and, inherent in the moves, turn properly and into that classic back swing position with back to target. I'm 61, I still can turn, and now it all just...happens. Last comment--if your tech team could put in some "slo-mo" shots, the videos will be second...to none. Thanks!!

I always wondered why the only way I could fix my very flat backswing was by squeezing my elbows together, my guess would be because it forced the left arm into a similar position that Eric is describing here but I find it really uncomfortable and unnatural feeling. I'm definitely going to try this at the range and see if I can get a similar position at the top without the discomfort

Often using muscle to keep my swing on plane rather than technique. While more practice is necessary, I love my initial results. The single most helpful tip I've seen, maybe ever. When I took up golf I didn't turn my shoulders, just lifted my arms. Eventually I learned to turn the shoulders properly but my arms stayed low too long and the shaft stayed flat. Video of my swing looked like it was run in reverse: my backswing resembled a good downswing (shallow) and my downswing looked like a good backswing (steep.) Taking steps to correct it now

When they said 'too steep", I though is was the back swing! I could never understand why I could not hit a golf ball with any consistency until you came along. As we know, most things on the internet starting "One simple trick..." are a scam. The difference is, this trick actually works! I've been battling a flat backswing for years and nothing I've ever tried has come close to resolving the issue. This fixed it in about 2 minutes. Nice one Eric. It's also a great demonstration of how subtle, seemingly innocuous setup changes can have a massive effect later in the swing.
