    It also does it doesn’t help Yoshi that it doesn’t have a tonal niche. Kirby feels like it fulfills the “cute reading and easy-to-grasp sidescroller” much more in-depth, and much of the Yoshi series is carried by Mario’s association. Kirby has maintained an identity and even that has evolved for things like “eerie underlying lore” while keeping a core spirit of “Kirby still wants food tho” intact. Meanwhile Yoshi has an inconsistent spirit.

    • @CouchSpud91
      @CouchSpud91 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      It also doesn't help how repetitive the Yoshi games are. Like, yeah, every franchise has core mechanics and game progression that are expected in every installment, but it seems to me that Yoshi has done the least to expand or deepen those. You could argue Star Fox, but that series doesn't have nearly the same number of games that Yoshi does for that comparison.

    • @jaziliynn
      @jaziliynn 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Disagree. Yoshi had the tonal niche of being a dinosaur, and that's enough for me lmao. In all seriousness, Yoshi feels like a game that is made to be baby's first 2d platformer that adults can play for the fun theme and art style. They're super generic, but it's still very enjoyable and only seeming to be getting better recently

      My list of favorite games is often fairly fluid, but one thing that's remained consistent over the decades is Yoshi's Island is my favorite. And I admit that in level design, creativity, and variety, Woolly World at least rivals it, and maybe surpasses it. It also has a fun co-op mode, makes the transformations more fun and less disruptive, and is much more reasonable about how it handles collectibles/scoring.
      Honestly, the one thing that holds it back for me is that Yoshi's Island's physics and speed feel so perfect and snappy. Yoshi's just a BIT too slow in Woolly World, a problem common to every single post-Island Yoshi game (except YIDS, but only when you have Baby Mario, for some absurd, indefensible reason).

    I agree that Pokémon doesn’t need to get more in depth because it’s battle system is already WAY more deep than you ever see during a normal play through. Competitive Pokémon is so much more engaging as it’s almost a completely different game. I think the games are easier than they need to be because they don’t teach you how to use any strategy other than super effective moves. If you teach the player how to use and play against other strategies, you can make the game harder and deeper while functionally keeping it at the same difficulty it was before.
    Also, to address the original post more directly, Pokemon is bordering on the line of so easy it's not even fun to play the game. Another comment on this thread pointed out that it's not necessarily a bad thing to be too easy for adults (though it would be nice to have the option) but the game isn't even a challenge for kids. Kids figured out Red and Blue before the internet was widespread. Kids were able to beat Cynthia, albeit with a good struggle. Kids are not idiots, especially when you actually take the time to show them how things work and not assume that they want the game to almost be played for them.

    • @Sauraen
      @Sauraen ปีที่แล้ว +15

      I completely agree and think they absolutely nailed that aspect with Ultimate. However, moving forward, it'll be impossible to keep building on Ultimate. If they released a game with almost the whole roster but one or two third parties missing, the community would know that the license holders had denied them, then they'd bandwagon that company and that company would blame Nintendo for creating the situation. Sakurai addressed this with the Sora / Fighters Ballot situation. But it's so unlikely that the licensing would work out for every single one of dozens of third parties now. So I think the next Smash Bros. game, which is probably at least 5 years away if not 10, will be almost entirely first party. I think that's the only option they really have.

    • @KrissyBlues
      @KrissyBlues ปีที่แล้ว +17

      @@Sauraen Plus, this view of smash as a gaming hall of fame thing was really only Ultimate's schtick. Which is fine, it's called ULTIMATE for a reason, and to be the ultimate smash it had to have characters no other smash game could and truly showcase gaming as a whole. But I'm fine with dialing back that scope. A lot of nintendo franchises wound up a tad neglected and I feel like if every smash game became a minagerie of random characters from across all of gaming it'd fastly lose it's identity. It worked wonders for ultimate but I really want more out there and small time picks again

    This is a super fun concept, I love this! Thought I'd join in and give my own takes on the questions!
    1:44 - Hard disagree, for the same reason as Arlo
    2:44 - I agree about the main series always being primarily light and easy but I think that a hard mode or another series (like the colosseum games) focused on more of a challenge would go a long way for the franchise.
    4:13 - 50/50 Majora's mask is not only my favourite Zelda game but also one of my favourite games of all time and I have played both versions extensively. While I do pretty much fully agree with Nerrel's video on the topic there is still a lot to love about the remake that I feel goes unsaid in most cases, it has it's pros as well as it's cons. Personally I still prefer the original just a bit more, but the remake is still a super fun and relatively faithful adaptation that I am more than happy to play on any occassion.
    5:28 - Kinda don't really care If I'm honest, one way or the other. As long as it's still video game characters, I'm happy.
    7:10 - Hard disagree. 3D land is great fun in it's own way, it's light and breezy, but to say that it's objectively better than 3D world is mind bending for me. 3D world just has so much more to it in every conceivable way that I can hardly even compare the two myself...
    8:05 - Never really thought about it before but you're probably right. The original Yoshi's Island is fantastic and everything after that has either been 'fine' or straight up bad for me. So I'm inclined to agree.
    9:22 - Wish people would elaborate on their arguments to things rather than just saying "it's mid" these days. I disagree about it being mid, I think they are great but they really didn't give much ground here to argue with other than just saying: "I disagree."
    10:28 - Couldn't care less. I unbox mine and put them on a shelf. I don't care to resell them or anything, I buy stuff to own, not sell later.
    11:14 - Can't be bothered arguing with this as it's obiously just a joke post.

    I think the thing about the Yoshi franchise is that a lot of people see it as peaking with the original Yoshi's Island on the SNES, and since then, the series has sort of been spinning its wheels. That SNES game is considered an amazing classic by many, and the series has had a tough time moving beyond that for the most part.
    I'd argue Yoshi's Woolly World is *also* quite a great game as well, but even then, it was primarily released late on the Wii U (a platform hardly anyone owned) and nowadays people seem to conflate it with Yoshi's Crafted World (a markedly lesser game than Woolly World imo). Yes, I know it also released on the 3DS, but when the game had a similar artsyle to another future game in the series and released late into two console's life cycles, it wasn't really set up for success or to be remembered all too much.
    See, for me, I'd actually argue Star Fox is "the worst," if I had to pick a "bigger" Nintendo series. Like the Yoshi series, I feel like Star Fox made a really good game (Star Fox 64) and just hasn't been able to escape its shadow. Both Star Fox and Yoshi keep trying to recapture the magic of that "one special game," though one series has veered into wildly different gameplay styles to so-so results (Star Fox), while the other hasn't done anything especially crazy, but has actually led to another great game and doesn't try to just simply remake that classic game from years ago like Star Fox seems to do.

    Yeah, I also agree with MM3D. I think it's a much better experience in every way. Even the atmosphere was translated and even elevated imo. Everything looks brighter, more colorful, but not less strange and creepy, I think. The only thing I give the original is Zora swimming. Yes, it's difficult to control in tight spaces and I understand that that's why they changed, but it's so satisfying and fast and there are places where you truly need the speed. Would've loved if they added a toggle in the options menu between og and new swim controls instead of just locking it behind the magic shield thing. Other than that, better artwork (which means better and updated sprites like the Garo mask), elevated atmosphere, better bomber's notebook, better song of double time, better Goron controls, better graphics, etcetera. I still love the original tho

    There hasn't been a Yoshi game that's up to par with Yoshi's Island on SNES....so I'd say yes.

      Agree. I feel like every game following smw2 just misunderstood what made that Yoshi game great

      Woolly World comes close enough that I wouldn’t blame someone for picking it as their favorite Yoshi game. Crafted World should have been so much better. It has some good ideas but it was such a letdown after Woolly World, ESPECIALLY in the music department.

    8:15 Yoshi games don’t usually stand out. However Yoshi’s Crafted World has more hours on our Switch than any other game except BotW. It has so many levels, they are memorable and difficulty ramps up nicely especially once you get to the secret levels. It has 2 player co-op. Yoshis Story had a ton of playtime on our N64 as a kid too.

      as a huge yoshi fan thats the one I couldnt get into. Yoshis island is one of my favorite games, yoshis story is great too, but that damn song drove me crazy, woolly world is one of the best wii u games, crfted world and new yoshis island I just couldnt get into with all the back tracking

      @@zyproductions4809 Do you mean when you collect all the parts and have to go back in the map to turn them in? Or like on the overworld map and you need to go back and get more flowers before you can progress? I could see that one being pretty frustrating

      @@YogiTheBearMan the having to replay the same levels multiple times to collect everything I guess I'm a completionist I just didnt enjoy it as much in that game and I burned myself out if I remember right you had to play each level 3 or was it 4 I really enjoyed the at and style of the game but I enjoyed the other yoshi games much more
