The whole "slowly changing what's considered normal to eventually get away with bad stuff" thing is too darn true and applies to way more than just the gaming industry. What a world we live in.

The most problematic part of normalization is that people KNOW it works. They know they can do it and it will most likely work no matter how angry some people get about it. The incentive and understanding is there and it's important to consider where to draw the line sooner rather than later.

Interesting, Slippery Slope Fallacy doesn't even apply to what you said. It only applies if there isn't enough sufficient information that would suggest any slippage. In gaming, we have Bethesda, EA, Activision...a ton of the AAA industry, really, as proof. And Nintendo, for many of us, has not only been one of our childhood sweethearts, it's also one of the few AAA gaming entities we haven't seen become...THAT. Nintendo commands a lot of respect because of that, and to lose that trust is foolish.

I think that all of this will push more people to emulation. I WANT to be able to pay Nintendo for their games, but when THEY are the ones refusing to sell me them, then what can I do? Not play the games? If Nintendo wants to curb emulating, then they shouldn't make it the only means to play certain games.

I was just about to comment this. I honestly would NOT be surprised that the reason why Nintendo is hoarding their legacy content is to prevent newer consumers from realizing the difference in quality from their old games compared to the newer ones. I'm not gonna blab about the emulator and rom sites I use but I fully support them. Plus, certain games like the older Pokemon games and Gamecube games have skyrocketed in price. I found a used copy of Thousand Year Door for $100 at my local game store that's not Gamestop. I mean...no. Just no.

I would give anything to be able to play dragon quest 9 again, but it hasn't been rereleased at all and as such none of the people introduced to dragon quest through DQ11 and your story can't experience it without paying idiotic amounts for the original release of all games bar 1-3 and as such there's a huge demand to emulate 4-9 (10 is an mmo and 1-3 and 11 are actually accessible). In contrary, SO MANY people were introduced to the yakuza franchise through the cross platform release of zero and 7 so when 3-5 finally came to PC and xbox two days ago people like myself who were introduced through newer titles were incredibly happy to finally be able to play through the rest of Kiryu's story. At the end of the day (as a wise man once said) piracy/emulation is a service problem. If your game is online/hard to find, you are only going to lose money through people choosing to emulate instead.

And then you have something like Xbox Gamepass where they have put basically everything they own behind a subscription wall (basically the same as Netflix in its prime). There's a good quote about online services and piracy. You're competing against free, so you need to be better than free. A lot of people say just pirate the games if you don't like Nintendo not selling them, but piracy requires work from people developing emulators, work to host the roms, and work to get them working on the users part. If Nintendo wants to combat piracy of their products, which they do, they need to provide a product that is better than free. Make it easy to get, make it work right without hassle, make it user friendly, and people will pay. This is not better than free. This is encouraging piracy.

it's the least defensible thing he said (among all of the rest of the points which were quite sound) but I think it might be worth considering at least for paper mario. Even super paper mario was such a drastic shift from the original point, and since sticker star it's been such a different series that it makes me wonder what the reception would be if they did release paper mario 1 and/or 2, and people could see how the series started.

The funny thing is I thought about this just today. I was watching his review of Pokémon Sword and Shield and had to think about the older games in the series. It made me realise even more how they just seem to release new games every year for profit and not for the sake of making an actual good game. It would make a lot of sense for them wanting people to not compare the games I guess.. it's really sad if this is true and would show how they think about their newer releases as mentioned in the video

Come to think of it, that would explain why, when it comes to modern accessibility, the Gamecube is borderline completely untouched
Like, I can really only name 3 Gamecube exclusive* games that were brought up, being Luigi's Mansion 1 onto the 3DS, and Wind Waker and Twilight Princess *[okay technically TP was on the Wii too, but it's always been more of a Gamecube game to me] onto the WiiU
And speaking of the WiiU, between that and the 3DS, you had access to Nintendo's entire lineage...except the Gamecube [and the Virtual Boy but, y'know, it's the Virtual Boy]
The WiiU had Virtual Console games for NES, SNES, N64, GBA, DS, and even Wii
And the 3DS had Gameboy and GBC games
And given that the WiiU and 3DS eShop are getting its plug pulled at the end of March, it really does feel like Nintendo is trying to snuff out competition with itself

Just a note: the Disney vault wasn’t conceived specifically to capitalise on the fear of missing out. It’s actual reason for existing isn’t any better but i’m someone who cares way too much about entertainment history so i’m gonna tell ya’.
The Disney Vault was created to combat the fear by the executives that putting out their animated films on VHS would diminish returns when they rereleased those movies in theatres (which they did on a 10 year cycle as it was also a way of keeping the characters and stories relevant to new generations). The reason behind those theatrical reissues stems from 1944 where the company released Snow White again which basically saved them from going under during World War 2. Only a handful of movies were ever included in the Disney vault (16 to be exact, with the last film added being the Lion King) while the other movies were all widely available. Then it kind of took on a life of its own, basically becoming a brand itself, which is where those advertisements came from.
Like I said, still a terrible anti-consumer practice, but it was born out of what felt like a necessity for the people in suits who felt releasing the movies to home video would be a significant risk to the business strategies they had relied on for decades.

Remember the normal release involving two games being on separate carts then the third as dlc? When all three could have just been one massive amazing
Fire Emblem game on one cart but was instead cut into three... This tiger remembers.

Oh, I remember because that was the first (and only) time I'd ever pre-ordered a game. Granted, it was for the mini art book (as it would be four more years before a true art book was released), but it was always stupid to me that they couldn't just sell the ultimate version of the game for $90.

But wasn't only Birthright and Conquest on the cartridge and Relevation was a free download code? 🤔 (Also don't forget the DLC was around 50$). I'm pretty sure FE Fates/if would be less hated in the FE fandom if they wouldn't locked almost everything of the game behind a paywall (in the normal release).

    • @Silburific
      @Silburific 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

@@obnoxious_alien No, Revelation was on the cartridge. It was the only way you could play it day 1. I remember because I beat Conquest in about 2 days and immediately started Revelation before my friends could even download it.
FE fans don't hate Fates because of the paywalls- if that was an issue, Shadows of Valentia would be the most hated game in the series, what with all the crappy dlc literally costing more than the base game. No, FE fans just don't like Fates because it was the first "mainstream" game. They whine about fanservice the "anime art style" and bad writing, but those things exist in nearly every FE game.

I’ve lost a lot of interest in Nintendo over time. The joycon issue, the lack of rereleases of games I want to play, and other issues have kind of had me put my switch down and stick more to just PC games. I really would like to play both N64 Zeldas in their original form on my switch, as well as the first two paper Mario games. The only way I can potentially do those things are emulators.
What’s also frustrating is Nintendo is heavily anti-emulator...without providing an alternative. If I could play Mario Party 2 or 3 with my friends on the switch, why would I use an emulator plus other internet software?

Melee goes for about $220 nowadays, and that number is only going to get higher as the years go by. And who is that money going to? Not Nintendo. Just some guy on Ebay. Nintendo wouldn't see a dime of money from me if I did this. Nintendo sees the same amount of money if I legally bought it vs if I pirated it, the only difference is pirating gives me more sense of security that my hardware won't give out, since the N64 is around two decades old.
There's an argument to be made for not pirating modern games, I won't say there isn't, but to say to never pirate ever because game companies won't make games? That's silly.
ALSO, a lot of pirates would 100% buy the game if they had access to it! Keyword: *if*. A lot of pirates would love to support developers of games if they had access to said games. I first played pokemon Sapphire on a phone emulator. What did I do when Alpha Sapphire came out? I bought it officially, so that I could play the game on hardware meant for it and enjoy it properly. I have a STRONG feeling that these practices, as well as almost all legacy content being locked behind a subscription service and not for download, is a decision made by investors and higher-up seeing how much their legacy content has increased in value on second market. By limiting access to their esteemed legacy content, they can resell their old games for increased prices each time, even mario all stars is a fairly unreasonable price compared to past legacy rereleases. Artificial scarcity is not foreign to nintendo, and I get a sence that they are now starting to keep their whole legacy library under that scarcity. It's not a short-sighted FOMO, but maybe a project to get back to a place where they can sell a single legacy game for 40 dollars and upwards. This also would make sence of their huge grudge against emulation and fangames that try to recreate the wonder of past nintendo games. These things don't cut into their bottom line, but will devalue their legacy content, which they seem to be holding under lock and key this generation.
