I've been watching some Jim Henson documentaries and other puppet stuff recently, and I just realized how amazingly skilled Arlo is! He's so fluid and lifelike!
Agreed! It's not an often discussed topic as people don't like spoiling the magic (fair enough!) but he's actually so good at it and not amateur at all. He really does become so easy to see as just, a living blue little monster. It makes me wonder how he would fair with a custom made, perhaps slightly more complex puppet, with moving eyelids and expressions and stuff. It would be pretty interesting to see someday..

Just look at his eyes, the way he positions them depending on his emotions and body language is very good.

@@packers12to80 They shut down their western division a few years back, it really looked like localisations of their games just weren’t gonna be a thing like ever again, then just recently they said their western division was making a comeback and dropped a whole load of new stuff
There’s probably a whole lot of lore with that but I’m not updated on it haha
Not to mention, given the game's genre... what exactly would they be able to show in a trailer? Its all puzzles and story, so just saying it exists should be enough.
@@AT7outof10 that’s also true… I will say it is a little weird, Level-5 are doing a showcase sometime this month (I think the 9th) with more details on the game, feels like something more in a direct wouldn’t have been an awful idea… but I’m still stoked and don’t care haha

I think the Birdo comment is more expressing excitement for the fact new characters are coming more than the character itself, I mean, that's how I feel about it
I think so too. Birdo in Mario Kart is exciting but Birdo in Mario 2 was not the best
Still, new characters in Mario Kart over a new Zelda?? There are already like 30-40 and seeing the back of a different character while driving doesn't really make it a whole new or more interesting game...I really don't get the big hype for characters in Mario Kart...it's not like in Smash where every character is different in terms of gameplay, here it's just a cosmetic difference for the most part. I'm way more interested in new tracks...yet still not more than new Zelda though. :D
@@Ray_2112 I don’t think there are many people who care about both franchises who would disagree with you, I think most people like that would love a new zelda way more than mario kart characters. But sometimes people like to talk about what we did get instead of what we didn’t get. You’ll make yourself unpleasant to be around that way. Besides, untill tears of the kingdom runs its corse it doesn’t make sense to get an announcement yet.
But to answer your question a little, ya there’s a lot of characters in MK, but a lot of that quantity is despised. The babies and pink fold peach especially. So imagine you’re someone who always played birdo, and you see birdo is missing, yet, pink-gold peach is included! For some people it’s about writing a wrong.
@@Ray_2112 The Zelda trailers, at least in my opinion, have not generated a surprise announcement on the scale of the reveal that characters can be added into Mario Kart with the Booster Pass. The excitement for the new Zelda is because it's a new Zelda, it's obviously going to be good, everyone is going to love it, the trailers are not directing this excitement other than reminding and reassuring people that the game exists. This Mario Kart announcement on the other hand came out of nowhere and is letting speculation run wild with what characters could be added before the Booster Pass is over. I am more excited to play Tears of the Kingdom than new characters in Mario Kart, but the trailers for Tears of the Kingdom have been far less interesting than the discussion that's generated as a result of the Birdo reveal.
@@Ray_2112 Mario Kart 8 already has a reputation for a somewhat weak character roster (4 of the character slots are just Mario) so having that expanded out is pretty exciting, as well as something we didn’t know we were getting.
Being “more exciting than all the [Zelda] trailers combined” is a bit overboard though 😅

I think for the Birdo take I'd believe it if the reason they are excited for that announcement is because it confirms that any new characters can come to the booster pass and not specifically because of Birdo themselves

She was rude. She was stingy with the food, which probably wasn’t the best to send someone with an appetite to save a planet with a booming appetite. Plus, her reaction saying she didn’t feel comforted or safe when Charlie said he and Alph will be there for her was off putting. She just gave a stick up/Karen vibe tbh.
Glad to see that Arlo saw the fan support for the first video and that he had fun with it. Can’t wait for more from this series!

I'd kind of agree with the take if Layton was the only announcement from Level 5 but it was revealed in the same direct as DecaPolice and just after Fantasy Life so a small tease was all I needed. "We're still alive, we're working on those 2, Layton's next"

That Layton teaser was still the most hype part of the direct for me
I think the excitement over Birdo is a sort of subconscious excitement for other new characters. This is the first wave we’ve seen include a new character, something no one was expecting, and raises questions.
Is it only Birdo? Or could we see other returning characters, like Diddy Kong and Funky Kong?
A lot of what we seen in TotK has shown us nothing changed in the core gameplay mechanics. Combat, stealth, durability, Link's hearts/stamina, Meals to max your stats, all of it will be the same.
Sure we have seen new things... but how much has actually been altered?

@@randomgamer-te8op They were very safe guesses, honestly. Diddy has been in two prior games, and Funky Kong is basically the face of Mario Kart Wii. And both are in Mario Kart Tour.

I know it's supposed to be a "hot take" (ie unpopular opinion), but that is straight up dumb. Why wouldn't you like something that is more HD and realistic over something that is extremely outdated?

I can see where they’re coming from. Metroid Prime had cutting-edge graphics in 2002 but cutting-edge in 2023 really can’t be achieved on the Switch. It’s always going to look a decade behind that due to its nature as a handheld.
Layton only being a tease with no gameplay is fine with me. The core 6 games have very similar gameplay (I'm assuming this won't differ too much), but it's fun to go into the story blind, so just the fact that he's back is a relief and welcomed surprise.
I just hope with the jump to console we still get those amazing hand drawn cutscenes.
The core gameplay with Katrielle Layton isn't that different either, and the Layton side of Professor Layton vs Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney, while slimmed down a bit, is still very recognisably Laytonesque.
After 8 solid games varying the formula gradually, I'm just happy we're getting a 7th main game, and reasonably confident that it'll meet the standards set by the rest of the series.
Though I do remember the Zero Time Dilemma announcement and the overambitious game that resulted, so I'm tempering my optimism somewhat this time around - while also remembering the various circumstances that helped contribute to ZTD being a bit of a disappointment.
This is why I haven't watched any totk trailers since the very first one. I still have not seen any gameplay footage. I already know I'm going to buy the game, so I'd rather know as little as possible. There are some franchises where I know I'm just always going to buy the games in. So a brief glimpse is all I need.
A Layton game being announced period is enough to get me excited due to how long it's been, they could've only shown the logo and I still would've been excited

The thing is about the Layton reveal, the simple fact that Layton himself is going to be in it is more than enough information, considering the abomination that was the last game.
Also, we were told other things about it immediately after the direct anyway, and there’s going to be a level 5 livestream with it on the 9th too, so we’re happy.
ok that's a thing Nintendo does that bothers me to no end, the whole "here's a 2 seconds teaser, watch the Livestream later for basic information" just give us the full gist of it on the main Direct then!

I've never played a Layton game, but the steampunk vibe in the trailer made me want to try it. Are any of the other Layton games steampunk, or just that one?

My biggest concern with Oatchi is its potential to clash with Pikmin's core identity. One of Pikmin's strongest selling points is the idea of fighting to survive on a hostile alien planet. In spite of the round and cartoony character design, friendly creatures on the planet are a rarity, and even docile ones like the Mamuta and the Spectralids have an aura of mystery surrounding them that still make them feel a little disconcerting. Even the Pikmin can feel uncanny at times with their blank expressions and unnatural place in the ecosystem. In comparison to creatures we've met so far, Oatchi feels very much like a regular Earth dog, an oddly familiar and comforting image for a Pikmin game.
The last thing I want to feel when exploring the world of Pikmin is a constant sense of comfort or familiarity. I want any feeling of safety I experience to be a fleeting sense of reprieve as I barely escape to the next sublevel of a cave or eject out of danger to return to the atmosphere at the end of the day. Perhaps there's something more to Oatchi that could keep it in line with the off-putting nature of the Pikmin planet, but it's not reflected in the trailer. The closest point of comparison I see would be the Bulbmin, another friendly-looking creature that follows our every command. We recruit those by killing its parent and abandoning them shortly after, which falls right in line with the hostile nature of the environment we're forced to struggle against.
What I value about the Pikmin planet is how it always feels bigger than us. We may triumph within it to achieve our goals, but we never triumph over it. The best we do is survive against it and escape. The planet is not something we can tame or befriend. Any one Pikmin we control is here today and gone tomorrow. If we are on the planet, we are not safe. That's the factor I don't want to lose, the factor that made Breath of the Wild feel more like a Pikmin game than Pikmin 3. Oatchi might not affect that at all, but that would be my main concern.
I think you won't be able to get the dog all the time...probably just for some certain parts in the game. Maybe you don't even have to use him if you don't want to.
I agree with the Birdo person but that's because I was genuinely excited by it. Not so much for Birdo herself but the fact that we didn't know we would be getting any new characters with the booster pass. I really hope we get Funky Kong and Captain Toad!

It doesn't take much looking around in the MK8D community to know they absolutely want new characters. The only reason Nintendo added Birdo was because she was one of the "How aren't they in this game" characters that the fans wanted to see return. Also, we got new tracks at the same time? Why can't they just both be exciting, it's not a competition to get your specific attention. I mean, Zelda Breath of the Wild sold nearly less than half of what MK8D has sold, it makes sense that they'd want to give such a big audience more content than just new tracks. Like, look beyond what you yourself want and see all the excited MK8D fans who are speculating which of their cut favs can return. Also, MK8D characters do play different, otherwise there wouldn't be a tier list of character and cart combos.

I came to the same conclusion that others are saying in the comments about Birdo. It was more the fact that Nintendo was adding new characters at all was exciting, not Birdo itself. There is a chance for more characters down the line, either existing racers from the earlier mario kart games, new ones from the super mario extended universe, or guest characters from other franchises.
But with that said, who should get the dream slot to race with the best?
This video convinced me. I'm going to become a massive fan of Birdo just because I can.
Also, I really like this series! It's fun to see opinions that you don't usually see, and Arlo makes good commentary about them.

12:51 I think the person’s excitement came more from the knowledge that the DLC was including characters, not simply Birdo herself.
What it will take (for me) for Oatchi to deserve the spot in the game -
- Must be a resource that can be managed. Be it something of limited availability, limited mobility, or just having to consider where Oatchi is in the level and how to use him to multitask, I want it to play into the strategy.
- Must tie into the story in a meaningful way. If Oatchi is sent with the crew *in order* to sniff out survivors, that'll make sense! If he just... shows up, somewhere on the surface, I'll be less inclined to like that inclusion.
- Please don't be annoying to control...
I really hope he doesn't just become a resource that can be used anywhere at all times just like any other pikmin. I always play these games with 0 pikmin deaths, and you can't make more of this dog of course, so I don't want him to just be OP and make it easy, or make strategizing with the pikmin pointless.
What's op about being able to have multiple pikmen cross the water at once? Or busting through rocks to clear a path
@@DirectorOfChaos9292 Well, you might only have 20 blue pikmin when you get to the river. You could walk all the way back, wasting time, to get more and safely fight the big enemy across the river, or you could get on the dog and fight the enemy with all 100 instead.

For people like me who like to not have a single death, and also play in a timely fashion (not necessarily speed run strats, but time *is* part of the games, that's why there's a timer after all), we strategize and tend to not always have what's best for individual scenarios, but what's best for all scenarios that are planned for that day. So we divide our 100 in very specific manners depending on the day's plan. Always having all 100 available makes it way easier.
It’s also wild to me that because Mario, Zelda, Pokémon and Animal Crossing are series that sell 20, 30, 40 million then Metroid and Pikmin that sell 2-3 million are seen as failures is so bizarre to me. Look at other companies like Sony/Microsoft selling 4-5 million is usually a big deal.
When someone said that Pikmin 4 (which I'm pretty excited about) looked just like "more of the same as Pikmin 3" I wanted to look Arlo directly in the eye and say "Deep breaths. They're wrong. Also, this is exactly what it feels like when people tell us Splatoon fans that (new thing) looks like more of the same."
Pikmin 4 seems to be more like Pikmin 2, with the cave system and the treasure collecting

I've been watching a streamer, HatFunction, who does fashion games sometimes. Right now he's working his way through Etrian Odyssey 3 but who knows what he'll play next.
I only wish it was funded by Nintendo so it could actually BE Style Savvy purely for brand-slave brainworm reasons... but honestly, if Marvelous will give us (by paying Syn Sofia) what Nintendon't but under a different name, then eh- I'll take what I get.

I love this video concept in a weird way. It gets that "click bait-y" engagement with the "spicy takes" but then the video itself is just Arlo being very level-headed respectful about other people's opinions.

Okay hold up. About the dog thing. That is a mechanic that easily could be a wagon, or potentially *gasp* even a fade to black screen, load across water area. Be careful what you wish for.

Honestly I really like these! You make it so that everyone's opinion is valid but you also throw in your own opinion on things which is nice! Usually we see people just straight up crapping on others views on things so this is a nice change of pace! Keep it up! :)
Not sure if its the same reasoning, but Birdo being in the Mario Kart DLC confirms that we aren't just getting courses, but also characters. Until Birdo, it has just been courses so now characters are on the table too, which is really good news.
I really like this series idea, considering Arlo usually carries the coldest takes of any Nintendo channel. I like seeing him maintain his cold takes, but also explain them and evaluate more controversial takes, and whether or not they have merit. I was expecting a ‘hot take’ series to be full of dumb crap I’d get upset about, but I really can’t get upset at anything Arlo does.
If there was one thing that Arlo missed about the Birdo comment, it was the fact that Birdo coming to Mario Kart 8 Deluxe confirms that characters now have a chance to come back in DLC
I think there’s HUGE value in an announcement that holds POTENTIAL like that, even if Birdo is pretty meh overall. ^^
What potential? It's mostly just cosmetic, new characters don't change the game, the gameplay is still the same. In Smash they all play different, but in Mario Kart it's just a weight difference und you mostly see them only from the back...new tracks are way more important and interesting imo. New characters are fine and a nice extra though.

I think this is becoming my favorite type of video on your channel. The hot takes give you an opportunity to talk about some aspects of games you wouldn't normally think of.
I really love this series, Spicy Take Salad. Im a little afraid you only plan on doing one any time there’s something new and relevant to get spicy takes on. I really think it would do well even if you just asked about things that aren’t new, like console wars, opinions on games or companys, or even just the open-ended themed like the first one you put out. I know a guy who’s favorite era for Mario was on the GBA. I also know a guy who thinks Metroid Prime is too close to Halo. I know a guy who litteraly wishes Nintendo was bought by Disney lol. There’s alott out there to generate from an idea like this, and because it’s controversial it’s emediately interesting and will still perform well. In my personal opinion the direct was a solid 3/10 there wasn’t anything completely new that we haven’t seen before except the prime remaster and layton but I see how those who wanted to see more of pikmin and zelda would rate it higher.
Was that supposed to be a 3/5? 3/10 is usually supposed to mean a particularly bad score

I wanted to see more of Zelda and I agree with your score. When we were about a year out from BotW Nintendo was giving really long gameplay vids diving into the mechanics, the world, the story everything. Here are 3 months from the sequel and they’ve said basically nothing at all about the game.
@@ftrwrwbg BotW was the first big open world Zelda. Makes sense they'd dive deeper into explaining it, as opposed to TotK which is a sequel, so people already know how it's going to feel for the most part. They want things to be a surprise, probably
I mean, Deca RPG and Fantasy Life were also new and unexpected, as was the inofficial Style Savvy sequel (Fashion dreamer, it looks just like a series the same devs used to make for Nintendo DS called Style Savvy). It's not BIG SHOT news, but there were more new things than Layton and Metroid.

ghost trick phantom detective remaster was the best thing in the direct
While a lot of stuff wasn't a ton of "completely new stuff," I didn't really expect that in this direct. We already knew more about the first half of 2023 than we have most years, in part due to delays of things like Tears of the Kingdom and Advance Wars. That being said, some of the "not new" things actually were pretty big deals. I mean, I now feel like I actually know *something* substantial about Tears of the Kingdom - sure, it was already revealed, but a decent amount of *new* info was shown to us. I'm also content if they don't reveal too much more - they don't need to for it to sell, and not having the whole game revealed beforehand will help make the experience feel more fresh and surprising. The best part of Breath of the Wild was figuring out cool things entirely on your own, and as such, I don't want too much more gameplay revealed/spoiled. Also BotW's story trailers basically spoiled the entire story - they were super hype, but looking back at them, there wasn't much more story in the game that wasn't in those trailers.
Also, some things that seemed minor/some people didn't care about actually meant a lot to certain people and communities. The Xenoblade 3 Story DLC reveal was *absolutely* the highlight of the direct for me - I was absolutely losing my mind and still am. Not every direct needs to be filled with Marios and Zeldas - giving other series the chance to shine is healthy, and I'd expect bigger reveals for 2023 to come somewhere between June and September since we don't know too much about the second half of the year while we already knew most of what was coming out the first half of this year.
One time I was very exited over a logo reveal was when Xbox back in 2020 announced the new Fable game I just felt happy. Fable is one of my favorite game series and just knowing it was continuing made me feel good.
14:56 As someone who doesn’t really care for Zelda, I wholeheartedly agree, especially since Nintendo seems downright *allergic* to revealing anything new and substantial about the game. I have a friend who’s super hyped for the game and I’m always happy for him when it happens, but like… remember when the “one last thing” was something big and surprising, or at least something we didn’t know about? The most recent one I can think of is Bayonetta 3 FINALLY existing, which was back in 2021! I think the Return to Dream Land Deluxe reveal would have been a great “one last thing” for the September direct last year.

I've beaten the game twice and couldn't tell you any of the dialogue or personalities of anyone other than Olimar, it wasn't that memorable.
I am 100% betting it's because Brittany is a female.

When they showed they were bringing Baten Kaitos, a LONG DEAD, series from my childhood I went insane.
I feel the very first one about the dog in Pikmin 4: personally I would have been WAY more excited about the idea of a "mount" in Pikmin if they just let you _tame ANYTHING._ Imagine if every creature had certain requirements you could fulfill to tame them- imagine taming a Dweevil or a Long Legs and skittering or STOMPING around, having to tame different creatures to solve puzzles, needing to tame and "capture" a specimen in order to have them appear in your Piklopedia, it would be so COOOOOOOOL
On the Metroid Prime graphics, they definitely havent played it in some time and nostalgia has enhanced the graphics of the memories

I was unbelievably excited for Layton. I played at least 6 Layton games in the 3DS era. I thought the games died with that Notebook game on the 3DS. 100% buying that.

The fact that they've still shown so little of Tears of the Kingdom THREE MONTHS AWAY FROM RELEASE (two as of this writing) makes me really worried that that May release will not hold.

5:51 I agree with this point because I was one of the people watching other people go crazy over the Metroid dread trailer, (one of them being arlo) so I had a look at the game, bought it, played it with my girlfriend, fell in love with both her and the game, and now I speedrun Metroid dread… so yeah I heavily agree with this point arlo makes.

Honestly, I kinda get where the birdo guy was coming from. I mean, I personally couldn't care less about characters for Mario kart 8, but at least it's confirmation that the game will likely keep getting new characters which is a big thing for the large group of people still waiting for Mario Kart 9. Zelda on the other hand has been so reluctant to show basically anything of substance. It's been a little tease here, a little drip feed there but you have said it yourself; they STILL haven't shown the _Reveal_ . You know, where we finally learn what the game is all about, what brand new concepts are in the game, what the central hook is, a look at new locations, etc. All of the trailers so far only really amount to little tidbits of mostly inconsequential stuff. Just more teasing essentially. It kinda gets old and it's hard to get excited about yet another teaser.
In terms of TotK finishing off every direct, we may be lucky in that (outside of DLC probably) this will be the last time they cap off future directs with that game because it's supposed to be out in May and the next direct is either in the middle of summer or in fall, so we should be fine.

i think that person who was excited for birdo in mario kart but not caring about birdo as a character was just excited because we got a new character in mario kart. now we know it’s possible to get new characters in the waves alongside the tracks which is pretty exciting. but maybe i’m thinking too deep into this, that’s what i’m excited for at least lmao

I honestly love this series so much because I just love to ramble so these kinds of videos are particularly fun for me to engage with, responding to each take one by one as they come up.
I think cute companion animals are fine if they're their as a companion first and marketable second, if that makes sense. If Ochi was thought up as a mechanical companion first and then made cute, then it won't feel shoehorned in and will make the game unique. It really is a wait and see sort of issue.
Honestly this Direct was carried by Level 5 in terms of newly announced games. A new Fantasy Life and that silly detective RPG were definitely some of my most hype announcements. And I actually forgot about Layton until the next tweet mentioned it, but that's got no release window so as awesome as Layton coming back is, it's hard to like look forward to rn.

I think this Direct was scaled down overall and so having Nintendo's more niche but well loved IPs headline it makes sense. Like this is their time to shine without being over shadowed.
The Prime Remastered trailer doesn't look uncanny or anything to me, which is mainly what I care about. I don't particularly look for my games to be stunning or just beautiful in their graphical fidelity alone, so I think the already really visually compelling environments of prime with a new coat of paint is perfectly acceptable and does what a remaster should.
Layton as a franchise is compelling because of Layton. The games have 2 core pillars, the puzzles and the story. It's really hard to hype people up for brain teaser gameplay, particularly when it's not the kind of puzzle game with centralized mechanics that unfold as you go, but rather unique premises from puzzle to puzzle. So all they really have is Story, and since it was just a reveal there's probably not a lot of info to give out at this point. But Level 5 had basically said Layton was dead. They had retired the character and even tried to move onto a new protagonist (which flopped. Probably more due to the story's approach than the character herself). So this reveal was basically his second coming. Just saying "He's back" and giving a name to the game to spark some intrigue for the setting was enough.
I'm not much of an aficionado when it comes to pikmin but as I understand it from someone's very good retrospective on the series, each game has a unique feel. Pikmin 1 is about survival. It's a race against time, with a relatively limited checklist to fill. Pikmin 2 is more relaxed and focused on total exploration and exhausting all the dungeons of treasure. and I forget what the idea for pikmin 3 was, I need to rewatch the video. Something about food. Anyways, I think Pikmin as a series is always gonna look the same from game to game, with just new pikmin and characters and such. But it's not just the new mechanics that make a new pikmin game, it's also a new type of adventure to go on, which can be hard to really discern until you get your hands on the game.
I can't really say Birdo was more exciting than TotK news, but I do sort of see where they're coming from. The new TotK trailer showed of a lot of story beats and gave glimpses of how fresh and new this game is gonna be, but I think a lot of our expectations were already there. We've been expecting and been excited for BotW but more for a long while now, it's hard to push that hype much higher while only confirming that's what the game is and not showing off something huge and earth shattering. Meanwhile, Birdo paves the way for more possible DLC racers in MK8 and basically says "You don't know what this DLC could possibly bring anymore" which is a fresh new kind of excitement.
I feel like the only thing Prime has to contend with on the day of the direct was the new NSO games. And I personally have always liked the "And you can play it today" with announcements. It always feels more impactful and like let's that hype train for a game immediately pull into a station.
The development of TotK info has been pretty odd. But then again it's hard to follow up the like hype cycle of BotW, like that was a game that was in development limbo for so long with this like occasional drop of information and the game was so new and monumental and got a whole e3 slot to itself that at this point, any game news cycle is gonna struggle to compare. My thing is with TotK coming out soon, I feel quite certain this is the last general direct that will end with a TotK reveal. We might get a new big trailer near launch or even a whole direct for the game, but either way I don't really mind. Like for me, ever since the very first trailer of the game dropped I knew I was going to buy it. But I think the aftershock of BOTW's whole hype and them trying to make a sequel with that in mind is they wanna slowly build up hype over time and they know that this is their big upcoming game. The direct after it releases is gonna be really exciting since there's no telling what they'll do.
