Finding 5 buttons is just not fun or engaging enough to replace a series of puzzles which build on each other, introducing a new item that unlocks so much to do in other parts of the world, then test you on the use of that item and the mechanics. They're also far too short and easy. They would be fine if they were minor bonus content but they're miles behind actual dungeons.

      They know they have a controversial opinion, so when they say it they just swing super far into extremity with the way they voice it.
      I personally, am rather meh toward OoT and MM. I prefer the other 3D games and I think the love that OoT gets is overblown at times, but I would never be bold enough to claim that they're buggy. They're a bit stiff and clunky sure, but they're also like 25 years old on the first 3D console; of course they're going to feel clunky, especially if you didn't grow up getting used to them. I'm probably going to get a lot of hate for thinking this way, but I personally would like it if there were no dungeons at all. No puzzles, no riddles, no mazes. I've never, ever been a fan of those things. I've especially never been a fan of those things in video games. Not everyone's mind works the same. Not everyone can solve puzzles or figure out riddles or find their way through mazes. Things that may be incredibly simple for one person could be virtually impossible for another. Having things like that blocking progression, especially, is something I absolutely hate. I mean, I truly, genuinely dislike the entire concept of it. In my mind, it's just plain wrong to expect every person who plays a game to be able to overcome those trials.
      Because not everyone's mind works the same, there are going to be plenty of people who can't get past certain puzzles or riddles or mazes. And if they can't get past them, they can't advance in the game. If they can't advance in the game, they can't, in effect, PLAY the game anymore. Which ultimately means they threw away their precious money on something they can't even use. Puzzles, riddles, mazes, none of it is even remotely fun. I've always been of the mind that games would be far better without them. There are plenty of other gameplay aspects they could use that would make a game enjoyable without relying on things like that.

    I actually prefer the more linear Zelda games over the large open world ones such as BOTW and TOTK. I definitely see their appeal and they are very fun, but they’re a bit too open ended for my taste, which also effects the storytelling. Getting the memories is essential for understanding the full story, but not only is it optional, getting them out of order is just weird. Still doesn’t change the fact that they’re amazing games and definitely deserve all the praise they get. I personally just hope that some future games are much more similar to the ones before BOTW’s release.

    I honestly hope that when Aonuma said they are keeping the formula for tears of the kingdom in future Zelda games that he really meant they are going to keep a lot of the games open ended in terms of the overworld. It is okay to have your games story be linear and to have certain areas blocked off until you are ready to go there. I am sure there are ways to make it feel like there is a lot of freedom to roam wherever you want and still keep stuff like dungeons locked behind progression in a main story.
    Linear progression is not a bad thing.

    • @BigRoyBad
      @BigRoyBad ปีที่แล้ว

      Linear progression is not something we can go back to. The experience of unbridled freedom and exploration means more than boring cutscenes and linear set piece dungeons.
      Forward, not back. Because linear progression isn't bad in general. It's just bad for Zelda.

    • @theprinceofthebadlands5204
      @theprinceofthebadlands5204 ปีที่แล้ว +34

      @Big Roy I honestly feel like we have lost something from the last two games because of it losing its linear focus on story telling. It is much harder to tell a good story without a linear progression. Effectively what these new games are are sandbox games where everything else is put on the back burner for freedom off exploration. This is not necessarily a better system. Just different. What I will say is that having these games stay that way will feel samey eventually, probably sooner than later. Say what you want about older zelda games but Wind Waker, Twilight Princess, Skyward Sword and Ocarina of Time all feel different because the tones in those games are different, the dungeons look unique, and their stories were more compelling and clear.
      I like the BOTW and the TotK games but I am also wishing we go back to games with an actual story to follow. I loved seeing cutscenes and the twists and turns. I loved getting new items and using them to my advantage to better traverse the environment. And I thoroughly believe there is a place for that even in this new style.

    • @datdamndog389
      @datdamndog389 ปีที่แล้ว +32

      I really disagree that open world works better for zelda. In my opinion a more linear zelda is better.
      you're actually unlocking items all throughout the game, which slowly opens up the overworld. Now you get all the core abilities that you'll use at the start, and the stuff you get for dungeons are just small extra's that dont really get used in future puzzles or open up new places in the overworld.
      Also linear zeldas can make everything feel more special and meaningfull. Botw and totk have a ton of items to get, but getting them feels a lot less meaningfull than getting stuff in the more linear zeldas.

Most Americans see story as an unnecessary add-on in a game. If you want to maximize your rate of return in this market, which is the second-largest media market on the planet, then you need to copy Bethesda and make your story as optional as possible.

    It's funny that people are saying dungeons are playthrough ending, because dungeons always were the most engaging parts of Zelda games for me even as a kid. I'd breeze through them because I wanted to know what would come next, what new item or mechanic it would unlock, what boss would await me at the end of it, etc. Meanwhile what actually ends my playthroughs is long stretches of travelling around trying to find the next thing. I took a super long break from Wind Waker because of the triforce charts and all that back in the day because a new exciting thing didn't happen every time I booted up the game. And I still haven't finished BotW to this day because after finishing all the Divine Beasts, getting the Master Sword, etc. I felt that I wasn't ready to go to Hyrule Castle and fight Ganon yet due to there still being memories and shrines left to find, but walking around looking for them wasn't engaging enough to keep me playing.

      It's a weird take to me, I beat OoT and MM before I was a teenager...I hate how now developers just assume everyone can't figure things out or that their game needs to be beatable without doing half of it regardless of the game. Like this was never an issue I heard anyone bring up about the old pokemon games, the old zelda games (other than the NES ones that did actually kinda lean into making kids call the nintendo hotline), etc. I really don't think it's a problem at all, the dungeons were the main appeal of the games, and getting stuck in one was just part of the game. Plus now that the internet exists and anyone can look up things they get stuck on if they really want to I think it's less relevant than ever. Honestly TotK itself feels designed with this in mind. I went into it 100% blind for the first several days, and I nearly missed the glider, only to later find out many other people did the same. And there are a good few things that if you don't stumble onto them you could spend the entire game without important QoL. Without being too spoilery Hateno Village is a great example of this if you ever cook anything in the game.
      But yeah I dunno, tl;dr I think gamers are smarter than modern developers give them credit for.

      They could of easily of made it a dpad and stylus combo, moving with the dpad and using items like the boomerang, whirlwind or bow with the stylus on the screen, it’s just gimmick for the sake of gimmick. There's a reason that series like Fallout and Elder Scrolls have gotten rid of the system (and even when they _did_ have it, they gave you a way to repair your items, and most of the time they wouldn't break permanently). The fusion system _some what_ alleviates the issue, but it still just doesn't feel good because you end up using half a dozen useful materials just to get one or two ever so slightly rarer materials. I can't describe how much I am dreading working on gathering resources to upgrade outfits thanks to this system...

Many scenes just have Sophie (main character) moving through her environment with a lot of wide shots, and have her physically interact with things to understand them (the door inside the moving castle for example). Those scenes often have characters verbally react to Sophie rather than have her speak up first, which would fit Link. For the weapon breaking one: totk I have been making an active effort in using my strong weapons even though I know they will break. Now that I’m older, better at video games, and addicted to difficult games like the souls series, Zelda is a ton easier. It’s a lot better that I’m now able to use whatever weapons I want on the bosses and enemies. It’s a whole lot more fun and relaxing. Moral of the story, use your weapons the fear of needing to use it later is BS

      The problem is that they're used as "rewards". You can't reward people for doing something with the resource that they just used up. It makes me avoid the majority of the open world because it's just a pointless treadmill.
      I don't want relaxing, the only interesting parts of either of these games are the plateau and Eventide where they actually take advantage of the mechanics they've come up with.

    • @hatti...
      @hatti... ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Tim Schommer Personally that would be a worse mentality as it would further solidify the fear of losing weapons, so now you're hanging onto an almost busted weapon, and can't even use it taking up inventory slots again. The old system made the games incredibly linear and took out a lot of the creativity and individual experiences that the new games thrive. The biggest distinction between the 2 is if you didn't like a shrine or a divine beast, you just skipped it, lol. If just 1 temple sucked then too bad sad dad you're just gonna have to tough it out and chug through it anyway just to complete the game. And god for bit you have to replay the same dungeons in the same order dreading the one that you know wasn't fun is coming next.

      @@DrBlakenstein I think this hits on a huge part of the issue - the new design philosophy is so obsessed with "player creativity" and "individual experience" that it sets aside some aspects of the old design philosophy that made it so great in the first place and that so many players miss. Kyle Hart's comment here touches on this. If there was a way we could have both styles of Zelda in one future game somehow, then THAT would be something truly special I think. Though I am not sure if that is possible - they are fundamentally at odds with each other. One style asks players to figure out how to progress however they want; the other says there is a correct solution and you need to use your noggin and sense of exploration to figure it out. Doesn't necessarily make it more "linear" (I think that term is overused to describe the old-style dungeons), just different in design approach.

Because zelda has so much to work with and has so many concepts, trying to cram that into one movie would be too much and I’m afraid if it would be good or not. I get the more open angle they're going with in botw/totk. And I do love both of these games. But something is lost in translation when you strip the dungeons down to areas as small and open as the deivine beasts and totk temples. You lose that sense of a big imposing place to progress through. And I"m sad to see that feeling is mostly gone in exchange for bite size shrines and new 'dungeons' that are basically just four or five disconnected shrine puzzles put in the same area.
    That said, I think the Divine Beasts and Blights get a bit more flack than they deserve. Yes, it is dissapointing that they have the same visual theme. But honestly, as boss fights, I think I like the four blights more than their corresponding boss fights in TOTK once you look past the visual variety and look at the mechanics of the fights themselves.

      I enjoyed the Gibdo and Gohma fights a lot, they were both challenging for me and interesting and fun. I did muktorok last so I had the materials to kinda steamroll it, but I appreciated it for what it was. And personally colgera is cool enough and the giant sky battle is fun enough that I give it a pass. There have been other easy bosses before in zelda, colgera is just easy but epic

      @@apersonwhomayormaynotexist9868 They delivered on spectacle, but the only one of the four I didn't find extremely easy was the gibdo one. The rest had more spectacle than the blights but not much of substance for difficulty.

    TOTK's Puzzles with multiple solutions are the dumbest idea ever...
    A puzzle with lots of solutions feels like playing crosswords while writing every word incorrectly

    I can't get enough of Arlo bumping the Guardian and apologizing to it, and the sound editing is perfect.
    This makes me want an Arlo boss in TotK at this scale.
