Why is social media actually dumb.

  • Hi ppl, I just wanted to share some thoughts on social media and how bizarre it actually is. These days I'm becoming more and more aware of the ideas that social media perpetuates and how deeply woven they are in our social fabric (to the point where we forget to question them). I'm lowkey just sick of all these new terms and categories and the general lack of nuance when it comes to discussing any topic, as well as the constant labelling and AGHHHH (it is late and I don't want to articulate anymore). Anyway, this is still just for funzies and I hope I helped elucidate some points that might've been floating around without proper identification.

    The best advice my father ever gave me in life is "If you're not paying for the product... you are the product". In this case, the product is us and our addiction so that these companies can keep shoving advertisements down our throats for free and make more and more money while we keep coming back for more. Social media is our generation's cigarettes, look at how we pull them out and consume whenever we get stressed or nervous or are just bored. But because it's a recent phenomenon, not widely researched, and socially accepted, people just don't think about the downsides until they're too big to ignore.

    • @blueghost4769
      @blueghost4769 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +53

      I like having a name for certain styles/aesthetics so it's easier to find similar pictures or clothes, but i've also seen someone asking "what aesthetic is this" on a picture of a white flowy curtain and other random objects that are literally just what they look like

    • @canyouthefandango3220
      @canyouthefandango3220 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +19

      It's called labels and categories 😭 The one who asked must be trying to find a specific settings/fashion/stuff and didn't get the answer he/she want and not in a way the commenter was categorizing someone. Labels and categories help us find things what we want specifically and this isn't exclusive in the aesthetic culture. If someone ask me what kind of life I would live I'll immediately say 'Cottage core" cuz it's a specific category and if you research it'll give you the main visual what it looks like. It's not that bad. You just didn't know what it is. And this also help me find specific sounds in music production because they are also genres.

    Man, you’re really talking real sense. Im 13 and i deleted my socials last year when i was 12. It was hard but when i did, the first week was hell but after months, it was actually so freaking calming. Like i realized that “damn, i really didn’t need that shit in my life.” And the fact that it CHANGED SOOOOO MUCH OF MY PERSONALITY AND THE WAY I ACT. Like srsly. Now people especially in social media think that mental illness is quirky and makes you cOoL, people who WANTS to be autistic, who pretend to have adhd, and romanticize stuff that shouldn’t be so.
    And especially in school everyone has social medias i feel lke its a normal thing and if you don’t have them, you’re “weird” or “you live in a cave”. So its hard to make friends at school bc of this :/
    And another thing im happy abt when i deleted socials, is that i feel prettier. Like srsly, i really do. Cause now that i dont nave TikTok etc anymore, well im not comparing myself alot to other girls. And i realized that being different is what makes us beautiful. I also start to develop my own personality and my own mindset instead of being brainwashed by the way people talk, think, act and behave in social media.
    Glad theres still people like you in this world!

      "Generations" we are talking about one generation here? I understand your point, but why are making this seem so deep? You've been alive for I assume no longer than 30 years and you are already assuming the future decades ahead. This is the thing I respectfully dislike about pessimists, you always claim you hate your generation, you've lost all hope etc but then what have you actually done? 🤔 , you complain as if you are a deity of some sort who built a utopia watching everything is crumbling down.
      If you actually want to change things then instead of latching onto the problems then spread positivity and have the empathy to realise there are others who want the world to change.

It took me a while to realize that reality, just like Instagram photos, is very different.
    Eventually, I almost completely quit social media because of the harm it was causing me, not even training my feed could make that horrible content promoting toxicity disappear. I think That social media is what help caused a lot of connections and relationships to fail, because social media likes to sell and promote things and the people who make this content are promoting the idea of what you need in a relationship. When honestly you should just do what’s best for you and the person. I think what many need to realise including myself is that there is always someone who will love you (yourself,family,friends) and that you should focus on those relationships and just what you want in life.

Every person is unique, you can't just categorize people, people can't just categorize themselves because they set boundaries for themselves this way and try to stick with the stereotypes. Same thing for any other niche of society.

    where he showed a study, that showed women find smiling guys unattractive.
    And that was the tipping point, where I now refuse to take any advise,

    His point was more or less "smiling be low key gay, ngl"
    and if that's what it is, then so be it.

Should you live in a rural area or otherwise out of the way of most people, you may not even know where to go or even have a reliable way to get there in the first place.

    Sorry I’m not trying to raid ur comment section with my long ass comments but another thing that comes to mind is online dating which I think has become more and more common. I’m someone who has absolutely no experience in a single thing romantic. The closest thing I got to that was in middle school when I tied my crush’s shoe laces💀 but I yearn for a relationship just like a lot of people do it’s just that when people approach me I’m almost never attracted to them. So idk I saw Wizz and Yubo which are advertised as apps to “make friends” but really they’re like teen dating apps and omg I was obsessed😭 most people just wanted to hook up and honestly not many were down to have real conversations but whenever I got some kind of interaction from someone I thought was attractive it would feel like validation ig and would give me so much hope like “oh yeah this year I’m finally getting a bf” which btw is pretty out of character for me😭 but not just that, it made me so judgmental I guess? Like, I would swipe left after only seeing someone’s face for a millisecond 💀 like it became almost a game and I kind of forgot that the people I was interacting with were actually people. And I feel like it’s because it was online yk like things online don’t feel real a lot of the time and tbh most of the time things online aren’t real😭 so when u have ig a “digital disconnect”?? It makes you act in ways that face to face human interaction would not allow you to. But living in a world outside of our phones is inescapable because I mean it’s the real world that we’re living in so I guess we try to mix in our digital reality with our actual reality and categorize each other and force things onto one another (even if it’s all in our head) so that we can all fit into the box that was made for us on social media when really all that shit is made up or highly exaggerated and detached from like actual real life

    People's media literacy skills have gone down yet they spend hours on end on social media. A very dangerous combo. People, especially sad and mentally ill individuals, are easy to brainwash. Algorithms can trap you in a loop where you only see certain kind of content, usually negative content since it tends to get the most views and interactions. That must twist your worldview if you don't give yourself reality checks from time to time.

People think how much they would be "missing out" without social media but once you delete them you will slowly realize there is nothing to be "missed out" of. I don't judge people who use social media (I have been there too myself), but I encourage everyone to at least try for themselves to delete them for a few days and you will see what happens. The thing that bothers me the most about advisory videos, is that we are literally sitting in our bed eating snacks and trying to "learn" how to live and what to think. Which movies should we watch that aren't pRoBlEmAtIc in any way, which clothing companies should we support (btw you can NEVER know for sure if a company is ethical unless you go work there), which foods should we consume to treat our bodies like temples, which face muscles should we not stretch too much by smiling or using a fucking straw, which position should we sleep so we don't get wrinckes or acne, which way should we wash our hair, our bodies, our faces, how much water should we drink, which people should we approach (or atTrAcT), which behaviors should we accept as okay, which artists should we hate cause although they're talented they're not good people, as if we or all the other artists, are by default better because some internet people say so. We have strangers who do not care about us at all, they're not our friends, they just want to pay their rent or promote some product, telling us how to exist, cause clearly we are doing it all wrong and that's why we're sad and lonely, cause we didn't try this new calming app, or ethically made cruelty free gluten free, vegan whatever.

I've been trying tools and web extension to stop me from hours of youtube binge and I guess it's kinda works, though a lot of times I've impulsively turned off the extension myself and still don't know how to stop it and this applied to every tool that I've used. And by the way, the tools that I've used is: for web, use unhook. Just search it in the extension store whether it's chrome or firefox, etc. For phone (android) Digital wellfare google/base app. This app tracks your screen usage and can limit app usage by setting timer for each app individually. But again, I find myself impulsively trying to turning these off. The old 'putting your tech away' seems the best way to limit screen uses, in my opinion.

    Spot on! It feels like I just listened to someone who formulated my exact thoughts. I never had tiktok and glad I didn't, although it was hard to relate to many people my age who use terms I vaguely understood. I hope that more people get off social media and get back to enjoying life truly with each other.

      Yep. Seeing how addicted people are to their phones reminds me of a black mirror episode. A lot of us are trapped.

    Thank you for inspiring me and all of us so much with your video, I agree with everything you said :)♡
    From a psychology student point of view (and sorry in advance for any mistake, English isn't my 1st language): social media is the incarnation of the human brain's fears, lazy heuristic strategies to read reality and need for dopamine through validation, confrontation and social interaction without actually getting out of the comfort zone.
    We've tried for centuries to find escapism techniques in order to avoid reflecting on our own flaws, intertwining feelings and opinions with other people risking to be seen as vulnerable, and ultimately really considering both the major and minor social issues around us. People once weren't as aware as we are now about basically everything, so since we can't close our eyes anymore what we're trying to do is change our interpretation "codes" in order to protect our delusional selves and to entertain our minds while we do so, too.
    There doesn't seem to be any downside to all of this...until we think closely about so many simple yet crucial things, like how conforming and repetitive our thoughts are now compared to once, how short our attention span is, or how much we doubt ourselves and envy other people constantly trying to bring them down to show someone (do we even know who?) that we're not worthy of the same judgment because we're cooler, more talented, kinder, prettier.
    We all live as if we were celebrities under the world's eye, and in a way we are because everyone can create content, but existing in your real realm where you really are just a normal person while your mind exists in a complete other dimension makes everything so confusing and especially exhausting.
    We probably fear looking inside of ourselves and our microcosm and realizing that we're no one to everyone, and we can't be blamed for that since the people behind social media kinda wrote this script for all of us; however, we should also get a hold on the fact that, despite being no one in a whole universe, we could also be everything to the special people in our lives if, collectively, we really opened up and showed one another our flaws, our cringe side, our weaknesses and our most intimate essence, without having to conform to a standard and looking for real connections. I just hope we all can open our eyes in the future.
    This was just a personal thought, I'm glad if someone reached this point
