- This is to help you identify and age your brooches. You will be able to see different Victorian (1837-1901) brooches throughout each Era and identify their clasps and hinges. This goes through the Romantic Period, Grand Period, and the Aesthetics Period.

I have melted many beautiful pieces as a coin dealer. Thank you for educating and taking the time to give pieces the history and proper information. Going forward I will take a closer look at historical pieces and put them away for someone else to enjoy.

I found a pair of Etruscan revival hook earrings in a cheap grab bag at an antique store. Definitely worth a lot more than spot price and the $5 I paid for them!!!

Love the videos as always, you are definitely teaching me a lot! I got excited because the watch fob portion had me wondering if I had any like that and I realized this 'necklace' I thrifted has been 'upcycled' which I don't agree with at all when it comes to antique jewelry, and the idiots broke it apart glued the part that would be where the watch hangs in the middle to create a choker style necklace and I can tell the silver mesh has been folded over and I'm guessing sautered together And then they added a cheap blue pendant which the sautered to the other half of the broken off to create the pendant. ....( Ugh drives me crazy that people do this it should be illegal, like I would start a riot over this lol and I hate that coin dealers melt down valuable pieces that are no longer made! We should all contact our local coin dealers and see if they wanna make double profit and sell the jewelry as is so we can save the antiques from going extinct! Sorry person who commented as coin dealer, but that ish hurts my soul lol
lol, it does hurt. I do not like the Christmas trees made up of all different types of brooches. Now if they piece was broken and really 'unfixable' then ok, but I hate seeing upcycled pieces. Funny thing is though that a lot of people even then would do the same thing. They would take their Georgian set from their mother and create a more modern piece from it.

Thank you for this. Very helpful! I have a couple of brooches that have c-clasps but I'm not sure the hinges are tube hinges. If so, the "tube" part is very short. It's more like a very short pin and the hinge holder sticks out a little farther. I'm wondering if this kind dates a little later, like into the 1920's or 30's? Do you have any videos that might have this type of brooch hinge? Thanks again!
The hinge is the real identifier here. They still make c clasps even today so the hinge is important. I do not think I did a video over art deco and Edwardian hinges. However, I am happy to send you a sheet “cheat sheet” with the different types on there and the age. You can also email me or text me a picture of the hinge and I would be happy to help as well. What is this material called "paste"?
Hello, and thank you for watching. "Paste", in antique jewelry, refers to a type of glass that is cut and polished with metal powder added to the molten glass to mimic the fire and brilliance of gemstones. This technique was developed and perfected in the 18th century. I hope this helps some.

A coin dealer,that melts many pieces! Who goes ahead and melts pieces, without knowing what they are or researching what you have?? To much,nevermind.........
LOL, I think there are a lot of people who just go and melt things constantly and send away for less than half of scrap value just for a bit of money. I would never do that, but I have been in a lot of places where people send their items and I buy them for scrap because the people buy them for about 45 to 50 percent of scrap. It is pretty hard to believe for me, but I know it happens.
