I want to tell you I worked at a jewelry store which specialized in handmade jewelry beading silver and gold etc. Lobster Claw clasps came out around 1977 as we used them. I remember the owner went to a show in Miami and came back with them and barrel clasps. We liked the lobster claw clasps best. (But men seemed to like the barrel clasps on their beaded style necklaces.)
Lobster Clasps Although it has predecessors dating back to 1959 and 1976, the modern lobster claw clasp we know today wasn't patented until 1996. So, while a piece of jewelry may have that vintage look and feel, if it's sporting a lobster claw clasp, it's actually a more recent creation!Apr 14, 2023
I must say this was a great info video! At the start I thought oh this is for beginners, I already know all of this but there were some tidbits I did NOT know. I am glad I stuck around and I recommend to anyone interested in older "pretties" to pay attention and enjoy it! Some of these pieces are absolutely gorgeous! ❤
Hello, I enjoyed your video the information you gave me was very informative. I did not know that lobster claw clasp came out in 1996. You keep making and I will keep watching and learning😁 Linda M

OMG! Thank you so much. I have avoided jewelry like a case of the plague! But you made such a difference. I'm going to rewatch, take notes, then go look for just a couple of pieces to start with. Happy thrifting. 😊
I’ve collected many types of vintage for a long time, but never much jewelry. I was pleasantly surprised that you reinforced some of the things I suspected. Thank you!
I have been struggling to find videos with detailed information and demonstrations of what to look for when dating jewellery and this video was the most useful by far! I hope you have more, shall subscribe and check previous videos 🤓💚
@@growyourwellbeing Glad it was helpful! I am planning on putting more videos out similar to this otherwise we have 169 videos to check out. Thanks for watching!
Thank you. Yes, I honestly appreciate the lobster claw mention because honestly, that was the big question for me looking at a piece. You answered it well.
Will you do a video on vintage rings & how to tell? I recently inherited my mothers jewelry but can't tell if any of it is worth looking into selling or not 😅 Thanks so much for the info in this video. It's helped so much!
I do not sell many rings so am not as familiar with those. Just starting to learn about them. Maybe someday 😊. Congrats on your new collection. And thanks for watching.
LOL! True but I think I will still use lobster claws as newer and not claim them as vintage. Some people consider vintage as 50 years so we will be safe. 😄
My local jeweller said he replaces old clasps with lobster clasps for $10. He has done as many as 10 necklaces for one person. He said the average person is astute and can recognise the beads and style in a vintage piece.
@@FindsofYesterday I am sure, I will be back....in fact I have been already:). I am a complete newbie but I am very much interested in vintage costume jewellery. I love colourful, shiny pieces but aqua/ocean blue is probably my favourite. Thanks again for the explanations.
it is amazing to see your video. I love the "art" of old jewelry. I'm afraid that I have over collected . Last count, I had over 1000 broaches which I have collected for over 50 years. Now I need to find out the value of what I have. Your simple description of lobster claw clasps is a huge help with both necklaces and bracelets,,, so simple. I am going to continue to watch your videos hoping to see more detail about broaches. Thank you. .
The item at 6:05, she refers to it as a clasp and a clip; she showed it right after showing the screw-on ear ring. Is the item at 6:05 actually supposed to be an earring too? She mentioned that nowadays it would not be so rough. But it's hard to imagine that anyone in any era would be willing to wear a rough or sharp earring without pierced ears.
I have always followed the same rules that you follow when determining jewelry age. Recently, I learned that I have been selling a lot of newer pieces at Penny's on the dollar. It's worth taking the time to find out which newer brands have very high value (even though they were made between 1990 and today). David Yurman is a good example. Many of the newer items are worth more than a good vintage piece from the 1950s or '60s.
Probably one of the best videos i have seen! Thank you for this informative post!

The lobster claw clasp was “patented” in 1996, but it has been around since the 70’s. I was curious so I googled it. 😊
Yes, the elongated one was. People called that the lobster claw as well. The style from Italy.
How ridiculous that the lobster claw clasp wasn’t invented until the 90’s!! My dad wore a lobster clasp in the 80’s!

Regarding the clip on earrings, my Mom has some that have a rubber or foam piece that protects the ears from sharp edges.
Yes, and they still make them today. I think we determined that them were probably shoe clips.

I bought a necklace at a thrift store with a small brass barrel clasp with obviously many years of use. I wonder what era to think it belongs to.
Barrel clasps are still being made today, so if you see one with a patina and most likely gold tone, it would be older.
How do you take into account that the clasp on most vintage necklaces have become weak and need replacing??
Not sure what you mean, sorry.
