  • What could be different if the Lion returned instead of Roboute Guilliman? We all know the Lion is probably not the best Primarch to work with and his personality can be difficult.

As a Dark Angels fanboyy, I would have loved to have seen the Lion return first, but as many other people mentioned Guilliman's statesmanship was needed at the time. If he did return first however, I reckon he would have kept the Primaris Marines mainly because he would need the manpower, and the Lion doesn't shurk from weapons that would help him win (as shown in the heresy).
I would like to see the Lion fight alongside Guilliman however, as angry as the Lion would be about the Imperium, I reckon of his brothers only Guilliman and Sanginius (Emperor rest his soul) would have been able to work with him.

In many ways, the Lion was the primarch most like the Emperor. They both gave orders that they expected those beneath them to carry out without question, they both didn't have a knack for 'human' issues, but they both could achieved many great things. Also, immediately after he was discovered, his Legion was thrown right into the Rangdan Xenocides. Keep in mind that a few weeks prior he was leading knights on a feudal world to leading one of the most powerful legions in the Imperium. Alpharius even showed up during the Xenocides and said that he thought the Lion would be the perfect Warmaster, and that he should let him deal with the campaign so the Dark Angels wouldn't be depleted from it. The Lion refused, saying that it was his task and he was going to carry it out. While he did deep down felt like he should've been Warmaster, he wasn't going to compromise anything to get it.
Also, remember that one time on the Vengeful Spirit when Calas Typhon and everyone else gathered in Horus' presence *thought* they should kneel, but when the Lion suddenly appeared to chastise Luther, everyone *knew* to kneel in his presence, overcome by an aura of dark majesty. Not to mention the fact that the Rowboat and Sanguinius in Imperium Secundus were sitting on their hands doing nothing while the Dark Angels were cleansing the 500 Worlds of World Eaters and Word Bearers. But on Macragge, Sanguinius was sitting in a dark room brooding on and Girlyman was too busy letting a whole culture of chaos worshipping terrorists thrive on his homeworld.
You may call him autistic for not understanding people (despite him spending all of his childhood and young adult life hiding from/killing Warp Beasts in the forest) but the Lion gets shite done.

He has flights of fancy and fits of rage and depression. He reacts emotionally but always tries ro make it for the good/revenge.

Should be noted that russ stated that the lion did well on terra politically. This is obviously in comparison to himself so take that how you will. Additionally the lion posseses a kingly majesty even greater than other primarchs shown by how typhon kneels before him without question whereas we wondered if he should for horus. The lion would become imperial regent and lead the 1st as a legion and advocate for the reformation of the legions. Like his legion the lion is the ends justifies the means so would tolerate the inquisition/church. Primaris might be a step to far and cawl would defientley be killed for all of his heresy.

I don't know, I actually think the Lion might be the most accepting Primarch of them all, with Primaris marines, next to Guilliman who ordered their creation. The Lion is hands down the most pragmatic Primarch of the bunch. He would take advantage of situations and apply strength no matter the rules saying otherwise. Emperor bans librarians? Finds out librarians are great at combating warp daemons? Don't care what daddy said, they are better suited for the task therefore I will use them. Chaplain disagrees? Punches his head off. Needs to uproot Curze from a mountain fortress, but Sanguinius and Guilliman have forbidden orbital bombardment? Too bad, orbital bombardment is the best tool for the job. So load up drop pods with void bombs and deliver the "troops", the "definitely not orbital bombardment", right into the mountain fortress. My home world turned traitor on me? Orbital bombardment till the planet cracks (kinda). Point is, the Lion is not one for letting sentiment, orders, or even Big E getting in the way of getting the job done in the most efficient way possible. So I could actually see him being very supportive of the Primaris marines coming out because they are a superior "tool" and will get the job done better. The Emperor's decree didn't stop him from using Librarians when they proved more useful and sentiment didn't stop him from wrecking his home world when they turned on him, so I don't think it would stop him from using Primaris either. Ultimately it will be up to the lore team who writes what the Lion is thinking when he wakes up, but if they follow what the HH writers have set up for the Lion, then he will probably accept them easily.

    Dear Valrak,
As a Dark Angels player, I love that you do videos on the Lion. I love your enthusiasm. The only thing is that I think you kinda of blow out of proportion (I'm not hating, merely discussing) his anger, and not focusing enough on his strategic mind. I personally wouldn't think he would go slaughter the High Lords, and I especially don't think he'd kill off the Primaris. He'd see their strategic value. I think you are lopping him in with what the Dark Angels are like now. Back when he was a Primarch, they weren't really as crazy as they are now. It doesn't take a diplomatic personality to understand politics and control them, especially if you have complete and total power. You need to see that strategy (Which the Lion is know for being etremely good at) can be administered to all aspects of rule, including politics. Here's my big reason why I think he wouldn't kill them all. Oh he'd be pissed, kill an inquisitor or two, maybe a priest, but you see, if he could stop and give Luther a chance, the guy who turned half of his legion, his SONS to Chaos, I think he could control his emotions enough to not murder the ENTIRE POLITICAL STRUCTURE OF THE IMPERIUM!

Ministry: My Lord, your Legion was divided!
One week later: All successor chapters arrive, painted in Legion colors and assemble as if they had never been anything but. Chapter Masters wear Praetor colors, and the inner circle returns the Lion helm, surrendering mastery of the Legion to the Lion.
Lion: Good. Now we head north to remove the taint of the Fallen.
I mean, what did you THINK all that secrecy was about?

The Lion was a pragmatist above all things. When the Horus Heresy was underway and the Dark Angels were beginning to fight daemons he reinstated the librarians (Because they are a excellent weapon against daemons), even when they had more or less been banned at the council of Nikaea. He would have made use of the Primaris marines without much hesitation. Because they are a valuable weapon in a time of crisis.

I don't know if Lion would have dismissed them out of hand. Skeptical, yes, but he'd also see the tactical opportunities. You might end up with more flexible squads though, given the whole 'one gun type per squad' concept was Roboute's idea.

I agree; the Lion has no chill. He'd ensure that his will was paramount and his rule absolute. As Imperial Regent he'd be far more authoritarian; brilliant but ruthless. When it comes to the Primaris I think he'd be shrewd with their application, thoroughly assessing them to his high standards. If he used them at all and didn't just repurpose their weapons I reckon he'd ensure that initially only those with his gene-seed were activated and only once he was satisfied that he had enough of his personal forces would he think to dole out reinforcements from the other loyal strains (the traitor templates would be purged - he'd see to it) as he saw fit, but always at a ratio that favoured him.

Lion's first reaction to the Primaris marines would be to scoff at them for the hubris of a human or cyborg attempting to improve upon the designs of the Emperor. But as the situation on the ground changes and the precarious position the Imperium finds itself, Lion's pragmatism will win out over his pride. He would order the activation and dissemination of the Primaris marines throughout the Imperium. After all, Lion always stressed to his sons to use every advantage given to them, he would be a fool to say no to thousands upon thousands of fresh battle-brothers ready for action when the Imperium dangled on a thread.

No Valrak, I don't think Custodes would follow Lion only because he's a primarch. Of 20+1 primarchs only 9 were "good products", the others were traitors or discrded products (the two forgotten ones), instead the Emperor dreamed of a Imperium ruled by humans like the High Lords, so their side is not to be considered so obvious.

    • @bryanskscion2229

The Lion's loyalty was less questioned then Guilliman's on Terra.

His popularity on Terra was not just with the administratum, but with Malkador and the other principals of the Imperium.
I see it in maybe an opposite way, the Custodes would have been happy to support someone as similar to their lord.

I think the best thing that could happened with the Imperium is Guilliman. He isnt my favourite, but the level of organization and statecraft he is capable is completly on another level. He basically laying new
foundations, a stable base, long overdue to the Imperium. Its quite simple. As Montecuccoli said, you need three things for war. Money, money, money. Everything else comes after that. And basically that is what Girlyman do. Organize, build stability. In my opinion this is exactly the type of fresh air the Imperium needs.

(Guilliman arguing with people about the faith.) Guilliman hears heavy footsteps approaching behind him, He assumes it is just a Astarte coming to report something to him. The Primarch feels a slap on the back of his head and a voice ask 'What are you doing to the Imperium br...' Before the figure could contine, Guilliman out of reflex turns the Emperor's blade drawn to the neck of the figure. The sun glared through the window high above the gleaming golden architecture and onto the figure's head, Guilliman realised who the figure was, disguarded the blade and hugged the figure, a single tear of joy dripped from his eye as he whispered the words 'My brother'. The figure who was around Guilliman's size, armour equally adorned with patterns of gold but dark green instead of blue, and long shinging blonde hair. The figure was the Lion, The Lion of the forest, The Lion of Caliban, The Emperor's first son. Lion El'Jonson. (Just a bit of Fan-fiction straight off the top of my head)

I could see Lion running the Imperium; he has at this point been noted in the HH books has being very 'kingly' and being quite deft at maneuvering the court politics of Terra (a complimentary observation by Russ no less!). He has a preternatural-like sense of authority about him that has been demonstrated several times now with him being able to stop entire firefights with a stern, knock-it-off command broadcast over the battlefield. This would be a very helpful skill set ! The books have certainly elevated him being a one-time mere 'strategic' primarch to an all-rounder-fucking-kill-monster capable of giving Curze pause, so he would likely be out in the void leading the charge when needed. I'm not sure how he would handle the ecclesiastic side of the imperium, but I do think he would gradually disband it whereas it looks like Rob may end up converting and becoming a believer. I respectfully disagree with the idea that Lion would go on a hardline killing spree in the new setting though. If nothing else, he is pragmatic. I think if he comes back now, he would have a good, long meeting with Rob to get appraised of the current situation, visit his father and do what is needed to keep stability and order. I don't think he would give Rob a hard time and demand leadership; they bickered and had arguments as brothers do, but they genuinely admired each other despite their faults. Rob can't afford to turn away the help and frankly, I think Lion would rather be out hunting. As for Primaris; I think Lion would be wary at first yet come around to them as the DA chapter eventually has.
