  • Honda should put the guy who designed the Civic shifter in charge of the entire car. Well located, perfectly notchy, and deliciously mechanical, it’s easily one of the top five shifters at any price in 2019. Your hand rests on a (literally) cool aluminum knob with a sharply embossed shift pattern shown to you in devilish red paint. Slot it into any gear you choose and it slides home easily as you command. Clearly, the old Honda ways are not entirely lost in 2019, but the Civic Si has one major flaw.
The 2019 Civic is available in three body styles, all of which wear the unsightly “anime super mutant” styling. One has to wonder if the stylist was being paid per-vent when Honda drew up the Civic; the coupe is arguably less ugly than the four-door sedan, and a four-door hatchback is available. Compared to its siblings, the coupe is a neat 13.5 centimetres shorter, with most of that length coming out of the rear overhang; the wheelbase is absolutely identical across all three body styles. The basic Civic coupe starts at $21,290, and then you’ll pay an additional $8,200 for the Si bits. That is a steep premium for a Civic, but the Si comes with many goodies - some of which you see, and others are under the skin.

I've owned my Si sedan for 35,000km now and have no idea what Clayton is talking about in regards to the rev hang ruining the drive. I can rip perfectly smooth shifts off at high or low speed no problem...took me a few days after taking delivery to master the technique required. After I read this review in print last week I was thinking "no one buys this car anyway because you can only get it in manual...this guy must be a millennial" Nailed it!!

The technique is not difficult to learn, it just requires shifting veeerrrryyyyy slowly. An unbecoming trait in a sporty car. And if the issue didn't exist, people wouldn't being paying $700 to tuners to fix it and yet here we are.

@@drivingca oh so is that why the car jerks a bit if i let go of the clutch fast? I thought maybe I'm just driving like shit. Still this is a fun little car.

I have a 2020 Si Coupe and due to the rev hang, it's almost impossible to shift it smoothly so yes, the rev hang does ruin the drive. I 100% agree with the guy in the video on that. The car is not a smooth car at all with the rev hang.

@@ahmedsaeed7698 Yes that is why. I have a 2020 Si Coupe and I can rarely shift it smooth because of the rev hang. Had the car for 2 years this upcoming March. Gonna disable the rev hang though as it drives me nuts.

Rev Hang? Rev hang has been an issue with Hondas for multiple generations. And, yes, it is tied to controlling exhaust emissions. That's not going to change. But it's not difficult work around the problem. It's all in how the driver works the clutch and times the shift.
Try this: A nanosecond before shoving in the clutch to shift to higher gear -- instead, lift off the gas. Just for an instant -- a 10th of a second at most. Then shove in the clutch. I promise you, there will be zero rev hang. Not less rev hang: none whatsoever.
It's all a matter of coordination and timing. In no time, muscle memory kick in, and you never have to think about it.

Mang I put over 5k on my new mazda 3 and thought I would have to live with the rev hang forever but after reading your comment and trying it out I gotta say my life has changed forever.

I 100% agree with you on the rev hang. I have a 2020 Si Coupe and the rev hang in it is atrocious. There's sometimes I warn my passengers about it so they know why the car is jerky if it is jerky. It drives me bonkers when I'm driving it. Literally makes me hate the car and regret buying it. I had a 2018 LX Coupe before the Si and the LX had no rev hang whatsoever and that car was way more fun to drive because of it. I'm getting the rev hang tuned out of the car soon and I can't wait. Great car but the rev hang ruins the driving experience.

my wife never drove stickshift and when we bouth that 2019 si she was capable to go to the gears almost perfectly...that rev hang is perfect for her. She can go trough the gears slowly and smoothly without stressing it.

If I'm not mistaken, you can get a brand new Civic Si for $24,300. I think the MSRP is $25,200. The cheapest Civic I think is the LX which is no less that $19,000.
