You have to approach this car with an entirely different mindset, which most traditional Honda enthusiasts it's hard for understandably. What Honda did was offer a much more usable power band for street driving. Once you pass 4,000 rpm in this car you get that "pseudo vtec" I would call it. It's a very nice sensation when you learn how to drive the car. Overall it's a very well thought out machine which is what all people buying a honda product are expecting. So if we approach it from that perspective I think the introduction of the turbo is a success.
Yeah really demands a good pedal setup though to be exploited fully. Zygrene said heel-toe was hard with this one because of pedal placement, if thats the case, it ruins that active driving experience pretty much.
I'd like to chime in for this one because I've owned a 2018 Si sedan for over 2 years (got a great deal from a family friend and couldn't pass up) and will be getting rid of it soon. I agree with a lot of the points you said. When I first got in it, I was really surprised by the refinement. It felt like a step or 2 steps above previous Civics. And the fact that the weight is so low was incredible. MPG were amazing, truly. Easily low to mid 30's, high 30's if I really tried. I modified it then returned back to stock and I now appreciate the stock form a lot. Styling: Don't like the rear end. Love the front end. Grew to accept it lol Engine: Really didn't like it. There was lag, the engine sounded so generic...torque was nice... but it felt dead, no character. Rev hang was horrendous so I immediately got a custom tune which increased power/torque and deleted rev hang. Still didn't like the engine. Now all the power and torque was low to midrange and it was more responsive...but there was still no character. At least stock, it would still build up to ~6000 ish progressively which kinda made you want to wring it out. So just recently, I flashed it back to stock and appreciated the stock power band more. I never cared about the power figures as much as the FEEL, and it still never did anything for me. Stock was acceptable at best but nothing like N/A Vtec Honda motors of past. Engine is easily the biggest letdown of this car. Transmission: It felt plastic-y to me at first compared to older Honda shifters. It was really nice when it was warm outside but during winters, it would clunk and click and grind and it was overall nasty. Got a full Acuity shifter assembly which helped make it almost bolt action rife, but I took it off recently because I'm getting rid of the car. It was not always fun for a daily because it was a high effort shifter, so now I appreciate the effortless flickable stock shifter. Pedals are spaced super weird so I get the Acuity pedal spacer which helped fix the issue. Now heel-toe is no issue. Handling/Ride: Front end was sharp like you said in the video. A bit more roll than I would have liked. I kept the suspension stock. The LSD was meh. It does its job but it would kind of pogo at the limit. It would lock then let go then lock then let go. Not smooth overall. But it's pretty easy to bring the rear around when you lift off so I wasn't too bothered. Seats are fantastic, hold you in very well and support your lumbar. Comfortable as hell. Love them. Overall, a very nice refined sporty daily. Great MPG. Engine was a letdown, transmission has its good days and bad days, and really nice ride overall. Is it a good Si? I don't think so. It can be fun, but it has very little character compared to the previous ones. Thanks to that engine. It's a potent little motor but it's not fun for what I'm looking to get out of a Civic Si. Probably would have been happier with a Type R from the get-go but I can't stand the styling lol
I’m pretty sure 10 out of 10 people will take the Type R over the SI if they were priced the same. Name 3 new car 25k and under that come close to what an SI have to offer
@@dirkpackwood6409 I'm not sure what you're trying to say. Obviously I purchased the car so I understand the concept that it was a great deal for what it offers. But I didn't find it fulfilling overall. That's my personal opinion
I agree with the high strung nature of the older 8th si. I just sold my 2010 CSX Type S (same engine as SI) and i miss it already... It was always on edge at high rpms, and despite its slow nature it was probably my favorite car to drive. Newer cars are too effortless and torque heavy, less for the driver.
I have actually owned both the sports version and SI version of the 2019, and I definitely can't get enough of the turbo engine! I do see what you mean about not needing to down shift in the SI, funny enough I would constantly need to do that to pass around cars daily with the sports model lol. Thanks again for sharing your review!
I test drove a 10th gen Si hoping I would love it enough to trade in my 9th gen. On paper its an amazing car, I really like the looks and the interior feels great. The seats, the steering, the shifter placement all feels much more similar to a proper sports car than an economy car. But the engine was really a deal breaker for me. Unbelievably bad rev hang, generic power delivery and unwillingness to rev for downshifts made it very economy tasting. If only it had the 2.0 from the Accord, this would be an amazing car.
I'm a volkswagen guy but it seems like they should have made it a 1.8 t at least 1.5 seems so small. I feel like they did it for countries where they add tax/insurance for engine displacement. But with a stage 1 mk7 gti the stage 1 Civic so looks pretty peppy it looks competitive and I think Honda guys are quite competitive. Makes sense they went to turbo.
I mean if you want a car for pretty much drag racing or just to beat people in going fast then keep the 9th gen. But you wanna go autocross? Then 10th gen its better then the 9th gen in every way, the handling, power delivery during corners, fun factor etc. 10th gen is more for track then drag racing. I perfer track so i have a 10th gen its worth it. Besides i got adaptive dampers for 25k no one else gives you that without it being an extra option.
i dont know ayone that would take a soft9th gen over a 10th Gen. 10th gen is better in every way and also all those issues you listed with the 10th gen can be solved by a simple ktuner which everyone including myself gets. I'm making 250 whp and 300 wtq on just a stage 1.5 R Phearable tune
I love vtec, but wouldn’t you say especially on the EM1 it was a lot of sound and sensation without much speed. I have fond memories of the EM1 screaming and feeling like the background blurring from speed, then a van passes me lol.
thats an issue for wide open roads, if you live where roads are two truck wide (and thats for going and coming traffic ) having a car with more than 200 hp is a bit much .ask that van with twice the power of your car to do the same will be a tall order when the roads are winding and narrow .
I think Honda had to do this to the Civic Si, if someone who is your average car buyer goes out and test drives a 2015 GTI with the 2.0L turbo engine, then and drives a 2015 Si with the K24, they'd immediately think that the GTI has a lot more power since it has so much torque down low. Sadly most people (certainly not myself) don't really wring out engines and instead judge them by how much push they feel off the line. The Type R is now catering to those who want the top end push.
I don't understand how anyone can accept the rev hang on these though. You have to wait literally 2-3 seconds in between each gear if you want the revs to be matched perfectly. Most people I see on youtube just forget it and force the clutch to eat the extra revs. I couldn't own a car that does that.
The 10th gen civic si is a good car. The engine and power won’t feel the same like the older gen if you already drove an older gen like 8th and 9th gen then you should know what I’m talking about. The 10th gen is like an economy gas saving sport car. The interior and exterior looks great. If you never drove an older gen. I recommend you getting this car but if you already have or drove an older gen, I recommend sticking with the older one because the performance on the old gen are 5x better, unless you want a nice looking car then just get the 10th gen. GREAT HEADS UP!! IF YOU’RE TRYING TO GET A 10TH GEN CIVIC SI WITH LOW MILEAGE.. I RECOMMEND YOU TO JUST GET A CIVIC TYPE R ITS ONLY A COUPLE THOUSANDS AWAY SO JUST BE PATIENT AND SAVE.. IT’LL BE WORTH THE WAIT!! TRUST!! CIVIC TYPE R ARE THE BEST HONDA OUT THERE RIGHT NOW!! THE BEST PERFORMANCE EVER!! I CURRENTLY OWN ONE AND A 9TH GEN CIVIC SI! I REALLY RECOMMEND IT!!
I daily this car and honestly the rev hang isn’t even bad once u learn how to just shift faster with the rev hang it prob doesn’t make sense but u learn to make it disappear
K20c2 6mt base is comparable to 9th gen's Si. The old K24 is about 1sec faster in the quarter mile, but GenX's K20 6MT is 230lb lighter with a more capable chassis. If you want the old school experience, better get that base 6mt setup in the new Civic before it's gone for good.
Not to rain on your parade or anything, but the difference between an 8th or 9th gen Si vs the 10th gen LX is a pretty big difference. The difference between a high 14 second car and a 16 second car is very noticeable. Not to mention the more freely revving engine, closer ratio gears and LSD. But you are right that the 10th gen in all its forms has a super capable chassis!
@@doctorferdinand1003 With a minor stage 1 tune, that only makes better use of the vtec range, k20c2 would be under 1sec vs k24. Still a lot for the drag strip, but on go, 200lb+ weight advantage and better torque curve comes into play.
If a car redlines below 7k, it just doesn't feel like a sports car to me. Torque wins races, sure, but for pure driving joy, nothing beats RPMs in my world. Obviously a car that has both is ideal (though maybe not for anything resembling legal street use, haha), but if I had to pick one, I'd choose a high-revving engine over a beefy torque-monster every time.
the Si didn't get VTEC in the US until 1993, and there was the 7th gen with the lame K20A3 engine that being said, the new L15 motors seem very capable, and 10th gen is a competent chassis also loving the look of this car!
For looks and power the 9th gen is where it’s at, there are endless options for turbo kits or supercharger kits which would blow the doors off the 10th gen
I really enjoy all the torque with the new turbo platform, its fun!! But I do get where your coming from. My old civic was fun to drive, but it was kinda slow until it was moded and tuned and even then it wasn't really fast.
I have a 2020 Si and I still don’t know how i feel. I’ve had many hondas, integra gsr, rsx type s and 8th gen si. It feels like they’ve traded out sensation and the experience for a better car with blander engine.
Hi Fenton, I know this is months later... but I’m still curious to ask. I hear you that the engine is boring and rev hang sucks. I own an AP2 and love the way the engine adds so much character to an already perfectly balanced car. As a sporty but comfortable daily driver- would you say this is the best handling, comfortable and most refined Civic Si to date? Or better yet would say this is the best Civic Si for daily driver purposes(minus the engine’s lack of character)? Thanks man
I never understood why manual cars here need to have rev hang. So little manual cars are sold here that it wouldn’t make much of a difference for emissions. I used to drive an old 5-speed Honda Accord and it was such a dream to drive compared to my WRX, which has horrendous rev hang in 2nd gear. You know there’s a problem when a 15 year old Honda Accord can keep up better in traffic than a new WRX. Not only that, the Civic Si rev hang is even worse.
I believe its because since manuals arent being made anymore as much. They need to make it appeal to the high mpg crowd. Since thats what most people want. If honda wanted to they can easily gey rid of manuals. But they choose not too.
How’s it going, new to your channel. HAve you drove a 86/Brz ? How would you compare that to this 10th gen SI. I’m debating of trading it in , but the looks and non vtec engine turned me away. Debating if I made a mistake.
I think the 10the gen SI is a great car but it’s not a good SI. SI has always been NA, high revving, and light weight. I love the 10th gen as a car but not as a SI if that makes sense.
Hey did this owner sell this car? I was really confuse on my purchase on a Honda 2019 civic si…. I’m in California. And I think I bought this guys car. Same intake. Supercharger. Same front end. Same exhaust. My civic also came tuned as well. I just bought it 3 days ago
Holy shit I didn’t know my car did that. I can change where my rpm’s set at??? I had to run over to my car and put it in sport and hold that button he was holding.
I feel like the review was a tiny bit unfair to the motor and the car in general considering hes barely modded the engine. The 1.5L block in that car has a lot of potential especially for being so small. I have an 18 coupe fbo witha ton of mods and I couldn't be happier with the power it makes and I daily mine as well. Meh, different strokes for different folks I guess.
Well that depends...10th gen Si still fun but Honda knows it's ppl so they left it up to us now that they gave us new platform to work with...I was interested in seeing if a Frankenstein version k20c mated to a k20/4A lol 🤔 just a thought
I love hondas I never own anything else but I like the numbers of that car but I'm not feeling the new si at all honda took away the joy an Driving Experience wit this new line up no vtec really was a bad move to me I get what there aiming for but it's just not the same!!!
Sadly the only big manufacturer that makes proper high strung motor nowadays is Porsche and their GT series vehicles (and lambo, Ferrari but those are so expensive for most of us). Gone are the old days of affordable high strung race car feeling coupes and enthusiast vehicles due to environmental and political dynamics. Even a 996.1 911s goes for nearly the same price as a base 2016 f type v6 ( I don’t get it?? I can understand the Porsche being more sporty and not as heavy etc, but man...people would REALY choose that over a pretty much new F type with much lower miles and sometimes not even out of warranty??? That’s nuts...the Porsche tax is insane. I can understand if air cooled vehicles get the Porsche tax or even 997S and above...but for a 996.1, not even .2, with its ugly looks, ugly interior, deathly mechanical design flaw, for it to still go for this much??? Ridiculous...absolutely ridiculous)
The prices fuel themselves though. If you buy the 996 you are basically not paying any depreciation while a brand new car often drops 50% in value the first 3 years and then falls out of warranty. 996.1 is still the cheapest way to get a 911 so there will always be someone willing to put up, and as long as the prices are sustained that gives the incentive to pay it.
@@bingoberra18 I see what you meant. But at the same time, the 2016 F types haven't been dropping much as of late and are definitely more mechanically sound imo than a 996.1. the only justification I personally see to get a 996.1 I'd for a more sporty drive but I can guarantee you more than 50% of these buys don't track the thing anyways nor drive too spiritedly. I just can't understand how a near spanking new, 35 to 50k clicks F type that isn't known for big mechanical failure can be the same price as a 20+ year old, known for failure, ugly, smelly, and crazy used with 100k+ clicks can be about the same price...mind boggling. I can 100% understand why a 997.2 goes for a premium on the used market but man....a 996 POINT 1?? Jesus ..
The rev hang irritates me so bad. I have the rev hang turned off, but the dual mass flywheel means you can't really escape it fully. The clutch is also really weak. You can get a clutch and flywheel from the type r retrofitted to the si for $1,500 and I'm probably going to do it soon.
why do people that live in the states complain about factory hondas being slow an they nave no tq when for maybe 10000us you can build a reliable boosted one (guessing)
Boosting a car isn't a simple thing to do. People generally dont do a turbo build because they feel their car doesnt have enough low end torque. Also, throwing boost at an older civic will overwhelm its chassis immediately.
If you add $10k to the MSRP you would probably buy a different car all together that has the power you want from the factory with factory R&D for that power level.

How’s it going, new to your channel. HAve you drove a 86/Brz ? How would you compare that to this 10th gen SI. I’m debating of trading it in , but the looks and non vtec engine turned me away. Debating if I made a mistake.
Been waiting for this review!! Fenton what road are you driving on or do most of your videos? Looking for good roads to drive my ap2 thanks!
Felter Rd. Try to avoid weekends!
Zygrene what city is this road on? I’m in SoCal. Looking for good back roads
I think the 10the gen SI is a great car but it’s not a good SI. SI has always been NA, high revving, and light weight. I love the 10th gen as a car but not as a SI if that makes sense.
Where’d you get the steering wheel? I noticed that 👀
Hey did this owner sell this car? I was really confuse on my purchase on a Honda 2019 civic si…. I’m in California. And I think I bought this guys car. Same intake. Supercharger. Same front end. Same exhaust. My civic also came tuned as well. I just bought it 3 days ago
Holy shit I didn’t know my car did that. I can change where my rpm’s set at??? I had to run over to my car and put it in sport and hold that button he was holding.
I love my 2017 Civic Sport, but after I put a bigger turbo and blow the engine, I'm K swapping it. Can't wait!!
You are the Chad lol
As good as it might be the high shifter weird clutch combo is a big let down. Great review
Drive a first gen speed3 if you want to know what torque steer is lol. I love my speed3❤ looking at getting a civic si also
This 1.5L turbo more fun or 2014-15 civic si K24 more fun???
Dual mass clutch awkward shifter action
Where is this road located? Trying to find nice places to drive my ap1
Dope
I feel like the review was a tiny bit unfair to the motor and the car in general considering hes barely modded the engine. The 1.5L block in that car has a lot of potential especially for being so small. I have an 18 coupe fbo witha ton of mods and I couldn't be happier with the power it makes and I daily mine as well. Meh, different strokes for different folks I guess.
how’s it held up?
Well that depends...10th gen Si still fun but Honda knows it's ppl so they left it up to us now that they gave us new platform to work with...I was interested in seeing if a Frankenstein version k20c mated to a k20/4A lol 🤔 just a thought
Well they can put Accord's 1.5t on this Si, that one does got the vtec lift on the exhaust like other vtec turbo engines.
You kept calling it a hatch, but is it though?
All the 1989-1991 Civic and CRX Si had no Vtec. At least in the US.
Dude basically drove dudes car, and said it ain't shit lol.
Where is the VTEC? I think the real question is WHERE IS THE NEXT VIDEO?
Channel is on hiatus for the foreseeable future. Life is a bit too much handle right now. Will be back in due time!
VTC no lift. The L15BE in the accord has Vtec
Where'd you cop that tshirt?
I love hondas I never own anything else but I like the numbers of that car but I'm not feeling the new si at all honda took away the joy an Driving Experience wit this new line up no vtec really was a bad move to me I get what there aiming for but it's just not the same!!!
Hold up, I think I might have seen this car driving around a few days ago because I remember seeing that license plate haha
Jesus ..
If you're ever looking for an original EM1 to review in the Bay Area, let me know.
I am SO DOWN. I owned a bone stock flamenco black pearl '99 years ago and regret selling it. Shoot me an email at zygrene@gmail.com 🙂
@zygrene where you at boi?
The rev hang irritates me so bad. I have the rev hang turned off, but the dual mass flywheel means you can't really escape it fully. The clutch is also really weak. You can get a clutch and flywheel from the type r retrofitted to the si for $1,500 and I'm probably going to do it soon.
Buddys face as you bash the poopy non vtec hah
Felter isn't meant to be driven this slowly...
what road is this?
why do people that live in the states complain about factory hondas being slow an they nave no tq when for maybe 10000us you can build a reliable boosted one (guessing)
Needs a 2.0 liter, the end!
is this the car for me??
Nah you need a 2008 Honda Accord EX V6 with 696969 miles
@@Zygrene great! I think I know a guy with one. Almost at 696969 mi
Issues awkward shifter dual mass clutch
8:52 awkward COVID handshake
Lol, Was this filmed during covid?
Dont forget to drive an R35 GTR
hiii can you rate a mk7 gti =)
Already done! Check out my RaceChip GTI review
Post more
Not really a SI review as it's heavily modded. Might want to change the title. Misleading
Eeeh that is not heavily modded at all. Intake, springs, strut bar and a E-tune is all it really has.
these are pretty common mods for both the NA and turbo Si
Your poor rear bumper 😞
Talk about a test drive jesus 🤣🤣🤣
F the v tec you got turbo
They really need to work on thrle 1st gear and 2nd gear horrible
Think the vtec is a little overrated Haha. It is nice though.
all downhill driving man, try uphill driving...
