  • Legendary old school Magic pro Brian Weissman playing the semifinals of LURKERCON 4 at GP Seattle 2018. Commentary with Sam Tang of Kitchen Table Magic podcast and Brian Weissman.
    LURKERCON 4 was a lot of fun. Over 50 players showed up for Old School Magic, and it was great to see enthusiasts of 93-94 Magic. I hope to see more players at upcoming GP Vegas 2018.

I've recently become interested in the deck and watching it in action being piloted by its creator is fascinating. Thanks for putting this together guys, hope to see more like it!

    I do like Brian a lot, and his commentary has been invaluable in advancing my understanding of the game, and especially how to play his deck which is one of my favorites. But I also got so much pleasure watching him get smoked 2-0 despite the clear difference in skill level between these two players.

    I’m new back to the game after being a pretty good Type II player back in the day. I loved this video. It’s so informative. I love that there’s an old school format now, though I never got close to getting all the power nine. I thought I recognized your name. You look quite young for a ~25 year veteran. Great stuff. Honestly, this is super fascinating, well thought out: next level stuff. The teaching Brian is doing in this video is incredible, and very generous. Furthermore: as a teaching tool the fact that he did not win the match (though he played very well, so no slight intended)- it's actually better to learn from, so we are hearing primary and fallback strategies the entire narration. Well done, and I really hope more of these are made in this style, and with as thoroughly thought out narration. Thanks!

    • @Thebrianweissman
      @Thebrianweissman 6 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Thanks tons for the positive feedback! This was definitely my aim with the video: to educate. It's quite easy to narrate a game where you're ahead the whole time, just explaining how you dismantle your opponent. It's a different story when you're on the back foot an entire game, squeezing the resources you have, trying to figure out a way to win. I intend to produce more videos like this if the reception is positive, so stay tuned!

    • @Thebrianweissman

      Hmm, not too likely given its deficits in Old School format. I do play mono black sometimes in online Commander, though that's an entirely different animal. When I do play heavy black in Old School, it's usually paired with white and blue to shore up some of the weaknesses.

    The "only 1 out against Library" argument against restricting strip mine also goes the other way around: there is only 1 Library so the chance of drawing one in the beginning is not that big. I personally haven't found Library to be all that dominating in Swedish old school. One Strip mine plus Orb and Demonic Tutor is usually enough to deal with it. That's 3 outs against 1 threat. Yes, some games boil down to a battle over Library, but the same goes for Mind Twist. Powerful restricted cards are a hallmark of the format.

    35:45 Brian, did you ever find out why Eric sacked the Lotus for Recall?

    • @Thebrianweissman
      @Thebrianweissman 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I never did, though I did ask him through Daniel why he didn't just cast Ancestral Recall the turn he tutored for it, to draw immediately up to seven cards for Library. His response was something like "I wanted to do something he wouldn't expect", or something to that effect. He's right about that for sure, I wouldn't have expected him to elect to not essentially win the game on the spot.

    • @rarevalo83

      @@Thebrianweissman I wanted to ask you, I watched the incredible Channel Fireball Top 100 Magic Cards of All Time. The list was very impressive although I think there were a few glaring Old School misses. The panels mentioned Sylvan Library and Blood Moon as two misses that belonged on the list (which I totally agree). I'm shocked no one really mentioned Mishra's Factory as belonging in the Top 100! Moat could be another possibility, although debatable. I think we need a Top 100 "Old School" Magic Cards of All Time countdown! I'm very curious to know which Old School cards you thought were missed?

    • @Thebrianweissman
      @Thebrianweissman 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@rarevalo83 Glad you enjoyed the series, I was quite happy to participate in a couple of the panels! The fact Black Lotus outranked Ancestral Recall is a testament to the overall sentiments of the panel, that they're more contemporary players and not Old Schoolers. I do think Black Lotus is the better card in Vintage, because three free mana at the start of the game is generally more degenerate than three extra random cards from the top of your deck.
      I didn't agree with a lot of the ranking choices either, though my perspective was more a consequence of years of Commander. At one point, before we started filming, I mentioned Commander to Reid Duke, and he looked at me like I had three heads :P. Undoubtedly, a "Top 100 Old School Cards" compilation would look a lot different from the Channel Fireball list, owing not just to the fact it's a tiny subset of all of Magic, but also because the priorities are just different. The eras and decks from those eras are just too hard to compare. How good was Blood Moon, for example, during the "Necro Summer" of 1996, when all the decks were either mono black or white/green? How good is Moat in a Vintage format where you get combo killed consistently on turn two or three? Vintage is so fast and ridiculous that cards like Library of Alexandria, Mana Drain and Mind Twist are obsolete. The game changes, and so too do relative card values.
      Maybe one day we can do a "Top 100 cards in Old School" video. However, you do need to realize the rankings for the Channel Fireball videos were the consequence of community voting. It's hard to compare your subjective sentiments to a broad consensus. The collective is usually right.

  • @hoojchoons6168
    @hoojchoons6168 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I've noticed in several of the Lurkercon videos Brian always keeps his cards very separated and never puts lands on top of each other. I've never seen anyone else play this way. Is it due to old rules from Chaos orb? You can see how his opponents put moxes and lands and other similar items stacked on top of each other. Brian, can you explain why you do this?

    • @Thebrianweissman
      @Thebrianweissman 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I sure can. I started playing this way due to the presence of Chaos Orb in the format back in early 1994. Back then, when the card was played with its literal wording, you had to be careful to have your permanents spaced apart. Over time, it just became a comfortable way to organize my cards, with the added benefit of confusing my opponent. I generally have my permanents laid out in a somewhat haphazard way, which can be tough for the opponent to assess, especially when it's a complicated board state. Sometimes people will overlook a creature or an artifact that's embedded within a grid of lands. I'm extremely used to monitoring a desultory battlefield, and it generally doesn't affect my ability to play well. I also find tapping and untapping easier with my cards organized into a grid.
