    In a format with StP + Timetwister + Regrowth, it's possible that the opponent can exile every creature-based threat that you play. That is one thing I like about Fireball, is that you can just Fireball them for 20 when you're fully out of creatures and factories. Plus, Fireball can kill a creature of any size if you have enough mana, and it can *maybe* achieve card advantage under extreme circumstances.
    Also, playing 1 Control Magic MD might be cool. It's pretty radical to make the opponent lose a 5-drop and you gain a 5-drop all for the price of one card and 4 mana. It's basically the difference between them crushing you vs you're crushing them. Playable as long as the opponent isn't trying to run something completely creatureless (which, I think is uncommon broadly in old school. Easy to convince yourself that every match-up is creatureless if you just play the mirror match against your friend all day). Cards that could potentially be cut for a Control Magic could be the Fireball, the MD REB, the fourth Disenchant, the fourth Tome, or Copy Artifact.
    I think Copy Artifact is a little awkward when you play 5 Tomes / Scepters. On one hand, it's a bit of a win-more situation, in that, if you have 1 Tome, then Copy Artifact makes it 2 Tomes; but if you have 0 Tomes, then Copy Artifact keeps it 0 Tomes. The second reason is that, if you copy your Tome, then now you have 2 Tomes, which requires that you keep 8 mana tapped every turn in order to get both Tomes' worth of value. Or, if you copy Scepter, then you just have an excessive Scepter situation. 1 Scepter can render the opponent handless and then shut itself off; 2 Scepters will render the opponent handless faster and then they both shut down.

    I typically run 2 copies of The Abyss with a 3rd in the sideboard. I've never run 3 main, and I don't always run the 3rd in the SB. Brian has now moved within 2-3 cards of my main deck: I have more creature control main than him with a Balance and a 2nd Abyss, whereas he has good cards for the mirror: REB and the 4th Jayemdae. Those two slots seem like they ultimately come down to a metagame read. While The Deck is the best deck, not everyone plays it and the Eternal Weekend fields in particular have been very aggressive. Meanwhile I have a 31st mana source (Volc #3) where he has the Copy Artifact.

    I love your reasoning on the changes Brian, but that old list was just so sweet. I loved how the Singleton Shivan required near perfect play. The deck was so vulnerable to careless plays, it made one a better control player. This deck has much more room for error. It’s probably the right call, but I’m partial to your old list. Love all your content. Thank you!

    Brian, 20-30 yrs from now, when you retire, you really should autograph every card in your "The Deck", signed "THE DECK, Brian Weissman" and sell the whole thing as the actual copy of the most important deck in Magic history....I'd be shocked if it doesn't sell for $200,000 or more. :)

      The cards themselves are already worth nearly $100K (Full Beta Power, Beta Dual Lands, etc.), and in 20-30 years, even more than that, and since they are the actual cards from the most famous deck ever, I predict (AFTER inflation) easily $200K in 20--30 years.

      I agree, if they Ban Library it will not be Old School I would much rather see strip mine banned

    • @RA-jk9qd
      @RA-jk9qd 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's a Good point about it being iconic. There is a dichotomy between iconic vs fair play where 1 card has a huge effect on the game. I would say no need to ban it if you have 4 strip mines, but in a 1 strip mine format (Swedish) it should be. I play both, and its basically game over for most decks when a Library comes out early.

    • @Thebrianweissman
      @Thebrianweissman 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      So how exactly are you supposed to deal with a turn one Library of Alexandria with no Strip Mines in your deck? Just shrug and chock it up to luck and move on to the next game? Honestly, I find it ridiculous how tolerant people are of that stupid Arabian Nights land, which awards auto-wins for nothing other than having it in your opening seven. I've written enough about it already, but people calling for the banning of Strip Mine truly do not understand the impact of Library in the Old School format.

    • @themonadnomad
      @themonadnomad 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Agree that Library is too iconic to be banned. Strip Mine unrestricted is likely the best solution w/o letting in other sets.

    Hey Daniel, Sean C im on my work account. Like the deck, the mind twist still cracks me up. Its cool how his deck is changing as he plays. This happens in Standard/Modern/Legacy in competitive play and as players try to break new formats in teams etc. I think 2x copy artifact and 3x jaymade tome would be better, but im not the pro in this format. I also would play more mana drains.

      @EdwintheMagicEngineer 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      LOL!
      I'm really looking forward to playing some games with Brian. From a fun perspective it really does not matter if I win or lose because he's the best there is in terms of competition and quite the legend in this field.
      From a competitive perspective , my Turbo Stasis deck is fully capable of beating any version of the deck. Some versions it deals with more easily, some less. But with the right people piloting both decks my own testing shows it can either come down to 1-2 critical plays by either person... or a big pull from either person.
      The deck getting an early and hard Mind Twist... often is a game win for The Deck. Turbo Stasis being able to drop Stasis by turn 3 is often a game win for Stasis. If the deck draws a hand filled with moxen and Jayemdae Tome... game win for the Deck. Turbo Stasis dropping turn 1 Winter Orb and Howling Mine is a game win for Turbo Stasis.
      Of course I think the edge goes to Brian with his deck. What I'm saying is that my deck is capable of a win. Also know that MOST people who seem to be piloting my build are not doing it right. They play my deck like a traditional defensive deck... which it's not meant to do. So I'm really looking forward to people see me play Turbo Stasis in GP Vegas so they can see how it's meant to be played.

    If you add transmute artifact you can grab black lotus or jayemdae tome or any other pieces you need for combos. You could also run a single winter orb if you wanted instead of 4 tomes that way. Gives you more options but im not sure 100% how many tomes you remove if you add transmute artifact. 2 or 4 transmute depending on what else you run.

    Wow I'm surprised, not so much about the Factories but by the Fellwars. Brian:
    1) Is it 4 Mishra's or bust, or is 3 acceptable? I noticed a big difference in playing 4 strips vs 3.
    2) Did you get to go up against the Vise/Howling Mine/Underworld Dreams/Winds of Change deck? That is a deck I struggle with in the Deck, with factories or without.

    • @Thebrianweissman
      @Thebrianweissman 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey, thanks for the questions. I think both Factories and Strip Mines are so strong that it's worth using four of each, even if that pushes the mana base to 30 or more mana sources. I'm using Fellwar Stones because they are a natural fit for the five card-advantage artifacts, and because they offer Blood Moon resiliency. I may actually up the Fellwar count to three or even four in the near future.
      I did not face any of the decks you described, but honestly, I think decks with Howling Mines have almost no chance against well-played control. If their strategy involves Howling Mine, then at some point in the game they're going to be casting Ancestral Recall on me and then expecting to win. I can go up to 8 main deck-artifact kill post-sideboard, which means the chances a Howling Mine remains in play are very low. I just draw an extra card off of it, and then blow it up, leaving them in a deep hole. I prioritize killing Howling Mines above every other artifact in their deck, including both Black Vise and Winter Orb.

    • @RA-jk9qd
      @RA-jk9qd 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Brian. Wow another big change I just noticed was no TimeTwister! What was the explanation behind that?

    • @Thebrianweissman
      @Thebrianweissman 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm not running Timetwister mainly because I simply can't fit it into the deck. I'm running 30 mana sources, so important cards had to be left on the cutting room floor. Timetwister is one of those cards, it's situational and inconsistent enough to warrant omission. Keep in mind the deck is still evolving, and will likely be different in a little while.

    I would experiment and find a way to get al least one mishras workshop in there if your going to run 4 tomes

    • @Thebrianweissman
      @Thebrianweissman 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's an interesting idea, but the problem is that Workshop doesn't fuel Tome or Scepter activations. Sure, you can power out the artifact quickly around countermagic, but once it's out there, you can't make use of it without four more mana sources. That's too narrow of an application for my tastes, even if it means you can sometimes cheat those artifacts into play. Workshop may be worth it in a four Fellwar Stone-version though.

    • @txmagyar32
      @txmagyar32 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You've obviously played it enough to know what works and what doesn't in i'm sure the thousands of games you've perfected it. II'll only say I tried out one of your other versions of this recently, and as Icy was my signature card back in my tournament days 94-96 I put one in and sometimes a second. And I just found the utility of the Icy still too much for me to not put at least one in, as it swung enough games for me. Though I'm so biased as I won so much money and so many tournaments in Texas back in the day with Icy as always one of my control staples.
