Back at Gencon in maybe..'96 or '97 I got to meet Peter Adkison at the WOTC booth. He was just chilling behind the table and playing sealed deck against people at random. I asked what he did at WOTC and he said that he's basically a janitor, that his job as president was to clean up messes. Super nice guy and I'll never forget the moment! If memory serves, he let me keep my free opened cards even though I lost! Class act all around.
This series of videos filmed at Peter's home, along with all of Peter's GenCon videos interviewing the key figures of M:TG's early history, will become some of the most important enduring records of the greatest card game's early history. THANK YOU AGAIN, Peter, Daniel & Brian!!! :)
i' loving all this games, old school magic looks like have something that comander seems to want to reach, but the combination of powerfull artifacts and spells, with the other weird old school cards is just SPECIAL.
I do remember that there was a first turn win tournament at Gencon 94. Where no games were actually played but each person had to show they could get a first turn win with the cards they drew. Another tournament was they held was black border Ironman tournament where the winner was awarded Beta booster box.
Hey Daniel I have a suggestion. If you stand the same distance from the microphone as Everyone else in the video, I wouldn't have to keep my hand on the volume. Just saying lol
AN cost $88,000 to print. There was 4.8M cards in 10,000 booster boxes. So each box cost $8.80 a pop to print and boosters sold for $1.95 a pack. 1400% turnaround, shared between WotC (research, painters, logistics, payroll) and the LGS's cuts. Still a very good business.
Everything about this video... EPIC!!! Looks like this hangout was so much fun!!! Great Convo, Great attitudes, Lots of Laughs! That's what it's about! Nice Job!!!
Of course the people who own multi-thousand dollar cards would say that those cards are "a part of the mystique" and be against doing away with the reserved list.
What would be more interesting are the lessons Peter A learned after selling to Hasbro. What he says in the beginning of the video, makes me think he has some interesting stories and better lessons to teach regarding that period of time for himself and the wisdom that comes from living through such an event.
And there's the rub. The central tension of this game is the subjective player experience versus the whims of the market. We buy more expensive cards thinking that we'll have better games with more powerful stuff, but when you get to the top, the game becomes so much of a grotesque parody of itself that it makes you question why you even invested so much into it in the first place. Money ≠ Fun. You get fulfillment in the game by playing with people. Find folks who'll accept your decks as they are and stay around the same powerlevel if you want to get the most out of the experience.
i just wouldve liked if the interviewer/camera guy woiuldve just let them play a game with no interruption at least once...seeing this in real time wouldve been awesome...never saw it done before
This video would be so much better if these guys were willing to just let eachother freaking talk. Had to leave cause I just couldn't handle them talking over each other constantly. Really cool idea but just can't handle all the interruptions
So... If in Old School I play obscure cards that people have to read that means I'm "Doing it right"? LOL I tend to have a lot of those experiences haha
The noice...... Damn. But how on earth no limits on card types back in the day? And how on earth did you draw 4 moxes in the first hand + black lotusses???? This is far from reality how people did play normal magic games. Btw I hate that overpowered kind of playing with tons of mana in the first pair of turns, no building up the atmosphere in the game. Nice try, great cards with that overkill on moxes and Lotus but no.... Not a realistic game of magic.
They don't need creatures. Lotuses, Sapphires, Ancestral, and Timetwister should give you enough juice to do anything you need. Lightning Bolt is the more efficient and faster way to win here.
You don't need anything but those three cards. Ancestral Recall is the kill condition. I'd probably play 27 Recalls, 3 Timetwisters and 10 Lotuses. 12 Recalls will Deck your opponent.
I agree that the old art was more iconic - but I don't know if that is just because I'm an old geezer myself. 12 years old now will probably say that the new cards are really iconic.
The 4 card max rule was implemented not too long after the game was released. So even if you played in that era it is possible that you have missed it.
What kind of abomination of magic is this? It's disgusting and not magic. I mean even in the days of alpha 40 people would not have access to 4+ of all the best cards like this.
Yeah I played magic through most of the 2000s at my local card shop and actually got pretty good in my area. Point is I've never seen or heard of a format that would allow you to have more than 4 of any cards except basic lands of course.

I love the juxtaposition of the war mammoth in the ante and both opening hands 😂
Everything else aside... the market value of those decks give me cold sweat

Thanks for sharing this Dan. Great to see Peter Atkinson like this!
He was holding those alpha cards like he was playing uno
lol right, most of the crads in my deck were printed in the last couple years and I'm way gentler with them
When I started playing you'd go to gaming shops and see people playing black bordered (beta) out of print cards without sleeves.
Adkinson: "These cards SUCK"
*literally throws a few hundred thousands bucks away*
In a game with Alpha cards that was played for ante, I'm surprised neither player used Contract from Below.
Super underrated video. Just saw this one and the misprint collection video and just wanted to say, awesome!
Amazing video. Love the vibe. Feels like they are my friends. Such a great time.
Sorry I couldn’t get through 5 minutes. Camera man kept laughing non stop and it was ruining the video

I think he is right about how it has gotten too busy, that it distracts from what you love about it.

I was already on the floor when Brian played the 4th Alpha Mox Sapphire!

Now imagine if they had sold each pack for 250 dollars and they weren't playable in tournaments.
Daniel Chang, you ruin all these videos by talking/laughing non-stop from start to finish.
Lol he is not allowed to be present in his channel?
I like his commentary
Yeah, when the content outweighs the stuff coming out your mouth, just shut up
Everything about this video... EPIC!!! Looks like this hangout was so much fun!!! Great Convo, Great attitudes, Lots of Laughs! That's what it's about! Nice Job!!!
Cool to see a live example of why these cards are restricted to one copy now
Of course the people who own multi-thousand dollar cards would say that those cards are "a part of the mystique" and be against doing away with the reserved list.
@Goomba Jenkins artificial scarcity is bullshit, wizards could easily reprint reserve list cards without the originals depreciating in value
wait, is technically the kitchen table ? that can be the most acourate clasic magic in the last 20 years

@39:08 when Brian twisters, he should be putting the time walks back into the deck.
Dear Camera Man.. Pls dont talk, shout and laugh sooo much and loud!!! I understand the enthusiasm.. but still. :-)
5:36 pile shuffling, folks.
I love how he asks a question and doesn't let the former CEO of Wizards answer him to show off the alpha booster pack 😂😂😂😂

millions of dollars on that table.. crazy
What’s the rule for Alpha 40? You can use unlimited number of one card?
What the heck kind of sleeves are those at 5:51?
it says right on the top of them, google "card saver 1".
i just wouldve liked if the interviewer/camera guy woiuldve just let them play a game with no interruption at least once...seeing this in real time wouldve been awesome...never saw it done before
That's awesome.
Why do some of Brian's Mox Sapphires look different?
Alters
Great video and stories, gives me chills thinking about the history! Thanks Brian (& Peter): PRESERVE THE RESERVE!! Sorry Steve...
Weissman didn't shuffle his Time Walks in with Timetwister :(
This video would be so much better if these guys were willing to just let eachother freaking talk. Had to leave cause I just couldn't handle them talking over each other constantly. Really cool idea but just can't handle all the interruptions
Very cool
Since when can you play more than 4 of 1 copy of a card in a deck? 5 Sapphires?
@Chris more than 4 copies is nonsense, and put of the rules. Its like playing basketball with 2, 3 balls at the same time, nonsense.
House rules
Local card shop during revised era one kid had 70 bayous in his green/black deck.
These house rules were before DCI was a thing
So did you just went to the guy to humiliate him on camera?
Depending on angle Brian sure looks like Iggy Pop (around 1977 or so)!
Wow awesome stories!
Oh yay...a deck where you sit there and draw 7 and sit there and watch your opponent...lol no thanks...smh
Mark Fisher thank you
I agree... Glad they chose to make some rules, to avoid most of this kind of playing.
Pretty easy to win turn one when you own a monopoly on the cards that allow you to do so
I want to report this video for the guy on the left
So... If in Old School I play obscure cards that people have to read that means I'm "Doing it right"? LOL I tend to have a lot of those experiences haha
Jugg's are always cooler.
Talking the whole video and distracting the players is not fun to watch...
Alt art alpha moxen
lol alpha may have been slightly broken
That laugh is so annoying
Hurloon Minotaur over all else
chalice on 1 gg?
Is that dude playing with semi rigid????
lol of course the rich dudes think the reserve lists "mystique and rarity" are core to the game
The noice...... Damn. But how on earth no limits on card types back in the day? And how on earth did you draw 4 moxes in the first hand + black lotusses???? one of the reasons they restrict cards or you having very boring games.
Nice to see but on the other hand extremely boring. The one who starts wins, always.....

I imagine you guys must get a ton of groupie chicks who follow the game…
Way more elegant
not even tournament legal.. come on guys ;)
I agree that the old art was more iconic - but I don't know if that is just because I'm an old geezer myself. 12 years old now will probably say that the new cards are really iconic.
Engraçado nos 5 primeiros minutos, depois ficou chato pra caralho
Ainda bem q o jogo mudou.
Alpha 40 is a shit format. let it die please.
Most boring and expensive match ever
The annecdotes are awesome
Camera guys always ruin everything. SHUT UP AND STAY STILL!!!!
Lmao...happy holidays
@@vintagemagic send me an Ancestral Recal or a Time Walk and I'll def have a Happy Holiday :)
@@scyther2835 haha you ain't getting shit commenting like an amateur 90's kid. We laugh in your face lol
boring
totally agree.
😲😲🙄🙄😴😴😴😴😴😴😴😴
wasn't really epic more like boring solitaire
Not even a little impressed, completely pointless game
@@firstnamelastname7506 lmao
Troll video. Completely fake. No discard phase? No 4 card max rule? I played in this era.
