    For the rules discussion at 16:59 I believe that based on current rules you cannot avoid the black vise damage even if you destroy the black vise. Everything in the upkeep goes onto the stack at the beginning of the upkeep. There is no more separation between "during your upkeep." and "at the beginning of your upkeep."
    THANK YOU for doing this game and posting it guys. I love so much about it. The cards, the discussion, and watching how focused Brian is. I had forgotten how intense he is when playing, but watching this it totally took me back there.

      It's been "at the beginning of your upkeep" since the 1999 sixth Edition rules change, so i wonder what he's refering to.

    • @brettjean9645
      @brettjean9645 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I can understand the confusion though because some abilities of some artifacts check the stack for quantity of cards , cards in play , creatures in play etc upon resolution of the stack so qty is manipulatable in some states. But I am almost positive vise checks qty when placed on the stack because it says at the beginning of your upkeep. And as far a my memory is you can't manipulate beginning of upkeep dmg before it's qty reaches the stack.

    hahahaha that's the first time I've ever seen anyone actually use a chaos orb lol

      Thank you for the kind words. I actually was one of the first regular Pro Tour commentators for a few years back between 1997 and 1999. I worked primarily with Chris Pikula, coverage we did found its way onto ESPN 2.

      Brian Weissman I'm just wondering why don't u stack you lands like all volcanic together? Just don't like to or is it the price? Any particular reason ?

    • @Ragtime4

      I'll take a stab at this one: several benefits, including but not limited to: defense against chaos orb throws, ease of counting at a glance, creating weird layouts to cause opponent mistakes... and more

    • @vorpalmotors
      @vorpalmotors 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Chaos Orb can only destroy a single permanent per Old School/93-94 errata, but your other ideas are solid. Or it could just be random ;)

      Winston you are correct but Brian has been playing Old School since before it was Old School.

    I remember playing T1 against Weissman back in the 90s at all the PTs and he was always a nice guy. Took the time to show me his newest Decklist that had 4 Mystical tutors in it, and gave me lots of tips on how to play T1 Magic. I am glad to see he is still slinging spells.

    This is really exciting for many reasons, not the least of which is the fact that there is so little footage of The Deck in action on youtube. Can't wait for part 2

    The MTG fidget tics have creeped into Old School as well. Every time Brian draws a card he puts it back onto the table and then slides it to himself then puts it into his deck.

    Daniel, there is a serious amount of glare in the video. Is it possible to arange future videos of MtG like this, in a room with passive lighting so the glare is severely reduced?

    Is there a modification to the format rules that made it so the Chose Orb didn't also destroy the Strip Mine and Tundra in addition to the scepter? Like, do you only get one card to keep people from covering their stuff with a playmat?

    • @Ragtime4
      @Ragtime4 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes it has errata in old school format 94 to destroy a single permanent.

    • @Pringlesman
      @Pringlesman 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Chaos Orb errata
      Chaos Orb (2)
      Artifact
      (1), Tap: Choose a nontoken permanent on the battlefield. If Chaos Orb is on the battlefield, flip Chaos Orb onto the battlefield from a height of at least one foot. If Chaos Orb turns over completely at least once during the flip, and touches the chosen permanent, destroy that permanent. Then destroy Chaos Orb.

    So, I've playtested The Deck online, but I don't get it. What is the win con? There are no creatures and only counters and artifacts that don't win you the game. Is it Fireball?

    • @Thebrianweissman
      @Thebrianweissman 7 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      The win condition is mostly irrelevant, but for this particular showdown I was using a single copy of Shivan Dragon. The dragon is an excellent finisher because its 5 toughness puts it out of range of both blue and red removal, and it deals insane damage once Blood Moon is in play from the sideboard. Back in the day The Deck's main finisher was actually Mirror Universe, which allowed an autonomous kill thanks to mana burn and pre-"6th Edition Rules". The rules before the release of 6th Edition stated you didn't die until the end of a phase, so you could reduce yourself to one life between turns with mana burn, then tap a City of Brass during upkeep to reduce yourself to zero. Since you didn't die until the end of upkeep, you could then swap life using Mirror Universe, instantly killing your opponent. Once The Deck has its hooks in you, it can kill you with nearly anything. I've decked hundreds of opponents using Braingeyser, fueled with a loop of Mana Drain, Regrowth and Recall. That chain of spells allows you to move mana between turns, generating enough collective horsepower to Braingeyser someonefor 40 or more cards at once. The sequence would be something like: Target opponent with Braingeyser for 15, mana drain it. Next turn, regrow Braingeyser, cast it for 30, Mana Drain it again. Next turn, Recall Braingeyser, cast it for lethal. You could often weave Time Walk in there to prevent your opponent from even interacting with a card on their turn.

    • @stefanhonerlage4183
      @stefanhonerlage4183 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      And that's what I love about the Deck. There isn't just the one win condition. Like you said once the Deck has its hooks in you i would say you nearly can do everything you want with your opponent. :)

    This is such a turn off to the format... I was interested in building a deck before watching this now i realize the format is full of a bunch of pompous scrubs that have no tabletop manner and are completely set in their own way of playing refusing any change for the better. What a joke.

    • @krewkid82

      Jerry Garcia they spaced cards out on purpose because of chaos orb. One flip of that card destroys any permanent it lands on. Plus there were 3 rolls of play...lands, artifacts, spells. It just how the game was played in 94-96
