    Brian seems like a good guy. One crazy thing is I understand everything Brian is talking about since I've played since 94, however alot of the standard and newer players can never imagine what magic was like back in the early 90's because so much has changed. Magic use to have a different Aura/Atmosphere than it does today. It was a different time and the feeling about magic was so different back then. Cool Deck! I appreciate the content guys!

    Brian: Just a business idea you should do with Daniel many years from now: When you (Brian) "retire" from M:TG (20-30 years from now???), maybe you could sign each of you cards from you very own "The Deck", and sell it for a bazillion dollars (through Daniel as your sales agent). Be sure to sign each card, "The Deck, Brian Weissman", and only those exact 60-75 cards ever get signed that way. We're talking Mona Lisa status years from now (and historically significant!). How awesome would that be! Maybe *frame* the cards, signed as such, and sell it as a unit for a serious chunk. I'm sure any major die-hard M:TG collector (which I'm too poor to be) would scoop that up for *any* price you ask for! Be sure to film & post a video of this signing event, so cards can be verified as to their Originality (non-counterfeit) for decades & centuries to come!

    Thanks for this Daniel I am still as obsessed with Old Magic as I was the first time I peeled a stasis from a pack. Brian you are a living legend I tried so hard as a youth to build "the Deck" on a shoe string budget! This is such a treat.

    Force of Will's purpose is not to be played; it is to exist, so that you have to play around it or through it. Just as Brian recognizes that the black discard decks didn't work because they'd walk right into Mana Drain, the same is true of Force in current Vintage; some degenerate things just aren't even attempted because fighting through a field of quad Forces is just to hard for them. So I'd argue Force is the more powerful counter not as a card countering a spell-- but as a card holding off an entire level of degeneracy in a format. But this is the guy who taught me what it means to be good at magic, so wtf do I know.

    Thank you, Daniel, for this important video! This is crucial M:TG history! I remember having Brian sign my Japanese FBB Swords to Plowshares at Pro Tour 2, on board the Queen Mary in Long Beach, CA in 1996. He was very polite & gracious. I *still* have the card! Thanks Brian! :)

      Yep, sure do! That very same card is also signed by the first U.S. Champion (Bo Bell), the first two World Champions (Zak Dolan & Alexander Blumke), key members of the Pacific Coast Legends (the first ever self-proclaimed "Pro" Team in Magic (Henry Stern, Mark Justice, Mark Chalice, Preston Poulter)), the often-declared Greatest of All-Time, Mr. Jon Finkel, the super-celebrity, Mr. Channel Fireball himself, Louise Scott Vargas (LSV), and of course YOU (B.W.). When Finkel & LSV both signed the card, they each said, "Wow, you've got some impressive names on this card!" Of course, they meant you, Brian, and maybe a couple other guys! I was there watching when you played Sealed Deck Beta on the Queen Mary and pulled a Serra Angel (and a Mox, I think), and the crowd went wild. I also watched you play a couple times at the Costa Mesa Women's Center (where SoCal's big tourneys were back in the mid-90's). THANK YOU for your superb video interviews! I hope Daniel treated you well for giving up so much of your time! :)

    What would be a GOOD video topic is taking all these counterspells and breaking down what can they actually do. Like I've heard spell blasts can take out mox's? Cus I'm running counters, power sinks, and a couple boomerangs in my blue deck, but I've got 4 bebs, 2 boomerangs, and 3 spell blasts in side board. Also phantasmal terrain can make dual lands basics(for someone who is broke) and doesn't yet have any duals. Like for ppl just getting into or back into the format which cards are answers to most "the deck" cards. Like tranquility does stop blood moon, but I have to spend 100 bucks on a played concordant crossroads to stop 1 abyss? Lol so many things could be better explained

  • @PaulGaither
    @PaulGaither 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    If you are playing in a format with Force of Will, that means Alliances is legal, which means Homelands and Ice Age are legal, which means Brainstorm and Merchant Scroll are legal. Merchant Scroll targets begin with Ancestral Recall and then goes Time Twister. Both of which will refill your hand in a snap. After that, you get the likes of Braingeyser... or Recall to get back your Time Twister.
    So, no. It is not fair to compare Force of Will when Alliances isn't even legal in "Old School" Magic. Of course you can't get cards back with Tome... but you don't have to use Tome to draw your cards if Force of Will is legal.

  • @kooscramer8145

    Hallo Brian. Great video! Would replacing the Shivan Dragon with a fireball be na option? It shuts down all opponent’s removal and your fireball can also function as removal, besides it cant be removed from game (as Shivan can with plow ofcourse). And with recall regrowth and timetwister it can be cast multiple times. Hope to hear from you

    Hi Brian! First off all let me say that I fell in love with your The Deck list the moment I laid my eyes on it when I started playing in 1998. I played a budget version of it till 2002 when I quit playing. I kept collecting cards many years later, completing a P9 set on the way. Just to know how it would feel to have your deck assembled, even without playing a game. Now thanks to the Oldschool format I am a player again instead of just a collector.
    One question though: when you say you played 10 hours a day, 7 days a week. Was that during the time when nobody used sleeves? And how did your cards look like shuffling them so many times without sleeves day in day out? I never played without sleeves and would like to know. Thanks for your contributions to the game!

    • @Thebrianweissman
      @Thebrianweissman 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You're very welcome Freddy, thank you for the kind words! The truth is, we started playing with sleeves very early on, I'd say within a month or two after I started. I remember seeing them for the first time in probably February of 1994, and then adopting them myself within a month. I didn't foresee the eventual crazy value of cards from that era, I just felt that my cards were more enjoyable when they weren't all scuffed and tattered.
      At the time, there weren't actually any sleeves that fit Magic cards well, you had to use sleeves that were longer, intended for baseball cards. Most people just left the end of their sleeves all long and floppy, but that bugged me, so I trimmed mine. Unfortunately, the piece of cardboard I used as a guide for trimming was exactly the same length as a Magic card, which meant the tops of all my cards were still exposed to wear through playing. Many cards I still have from that era bear a distinctive wear pattern: a line of grime and scuffing right at the top.

    • @Ragtime4
      @Ragtime4 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Brian Weissman LOL! This partly explains why Brian joined my other buddies in trolling my floppy-ended penny sleeves! I have used the baseball card sleeves brian describes since '94

    With all of the reprints in modern card frames, I want to play old school magic with only modern card frames.

    • @nickfanzo
      @nickfanzo 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Sounds like fun, but I think the old art has a more whimsical feeling that adds to the format. Newer cards have more of a comic book feel, the old cards more of a 70/80s fantasy feel

    • @PaulGaither
      @PaulGaither 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@nickfanzo- I said frames, not art. I love the old art. Of course, this post was two + years ago and before they went insane with al of the alternative frames. I was just talking about the M10 frame updates. They are clean and clear. My favorites though are the Plane Shifted frames like the original Damnation and Harmonize. Those kept the old school feel (and white text) with the modern easy to read layout.

    man this is so cool... Are those double-sleeved? Do you ever have to replace Chaos Orb sleeve because of how much it gets tossed around?

    • @Thebrianweissman
      @Thebrianweissman 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nope, all the cards are single-sleeved, I don't think I'll ever play with anything double-sleeved. I'm using KMC Hyper Mat Black sleeves, which are pretty good for resisting wear and tear. I don't actually toss the Orb very much, that little demo I did for Daniel involved throwing it more than I've done in the last 10 tournaments combined.

      There is no hard rule about this unfortunately, but it really has to do with what the opponent is playing. Games are much slower in Old School that in other formats, so my top priority is simply having a lot of lands. It's not out of the ordinary to keep five or even six land hands in this format, that's often exactly all you want.
