Fixing a rattling Landcruiser engine

  • A short but hopefully useful video. The 1HD-FTE engine in our landcruiser has many rattling noises in the engine, but one of them is caused by valve clearances which are out of spec. It's one of the things we wanted to eliminate while diagnosing our smoke problem. Here's how it's done. Hopefully this will help other amateur mechanics.

    Great work! since you've got access to a lot of other components..a great opportunity to;
    1. replace valve cover gasket
    2. intake manifold gasket
    3. timing belt and tensioner
    4. water pump + thermostat, coolant flush
    5. crossover pipe gasket
    6. intake cleaning

    I've checked mine 3 times on the 1HD-FT, basically the same engine, I've owned for the last 19yrs and 85k+ miles and they don't move much. It seems a strange setup if you haven't come across it before with the tappet and valve bridge but the build quality always impresses me.👍

    Dude, exceptional! Very useful and definitely the most detailed video on the subject. Great work.

    Always worth watching someone new.
    Two tips I picked up.
    The adjustable spanner to hold the part before cracking the nut. Top tip. That could save a bucket full of trouble.
    Second. A piece of wood to put your tools on!

      Even better, a large magnetic tool tray!👍

      The adjustable spanner is to hold the bridge cos without it you can dislodge the valve collets

      The adjustable spanner isn't just a "tip", it's the procedure given in the FSM.

    Great work I'm learning 1HD fte
    Where is the knock sensor and fuel temperature sensor ?
    And if you have a link for diagram sensors for 1HD FTE😊
    And does diesel have Camshaft sensor ?

    I thought you rotated the engine to another mark to the left on the timing case for valve lash settings

    • @vPerformance
      @vPerformance  ปีที่แล้ว

      Official Toyota service docs state top dead centre. Although to be fair the timing mark is off to the left at around 10pm (if it was a clock)

    • @harveysmith100
      @harveysmith100 ปีที่แล้ว

      TDC is the mark at about 10 O'clock if I remember correctly. The timing mark at 12 O'clock serves another use.
      When setting your valves, the important thing is to check that the rocker is sitting on the round part of the cam, not a lobe.
      Keep turning the engine and move down the engine setting the valves as you go checking the rocker is on the round part of the cam each time.

    That's funny...
    6 people I know with a 1HD-FTE, 400,000km and older...
    All found thier valve clearances pretty much in spec.
    Yours is the only motor I've seen out...
    Weird

    • @mmh960a6
      @mmh960a6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mine (415,000km) was out of spec too .. until a month ago. Good for those 6 people that they at least bothered to check.

    • @vPerformance
      @vPerformance  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's a bit of a mission to check, I'm not surprised most people don't bother 😂

      @@vPerformance "most people don't bother" and that's exactly the point about used vehicles that look all tidy and polished on the outside but the oily bits get neglected.

      Two points here.
      Have they had their engine from new? If they have had it properly serviced, this will have been done at scheduled intervals.
      Two, if they have bought the vehicle 100'000 km before, it may have been done then.

  • @harjinderkaur2384
    @harjinderkaur2384 ปีที่แล้ว

    Its just stupid how they have that adjustment down there the one under.

    • @harveysmith100
      @harveysmith100 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not really, it is a 24 valve. If you look, one rocker transfers it's force onto two valves via the part you mentioned.
      It is actually a piece of wonderful Japanese engineering.
      (Please remember this originally was a 12 valve design.)

      Really? Well as a diesel mechanic of 30 years experience myself, with one of these engines powering my 79 series work truck, i think the design is awesome and the engine dessign overall is legendary.
