  • I've seen several people say that they're hesitant to open their new 2020 MacBook Air to try and resolve the overheating issues plaguing the community. Here's a quick video showing how I installed a thermal pad to help cool my Air's i5 processor.

I've just ordered a thermal pad and screwdriver, to do this on my i5 2020 MBA. I'll post an update when the modification is done.
Update: Installation was a breeze. Cut the thermal pad down to 35mm x 45mm and placed it in the middle of the heatsink. Booted the computer up and... no fire! ;)
I've used the Artic Thermal pad (1.5mm thickness) and an iFixit P5 screwdriver.
I ran tests in GeekBench and Cinebench R20. Here are the results:
    GeekBench
    Before
    > Idle temp 44 °C, during test temperature hovered around 80-100 °C, mostly 100 °C.
    > Max RPM: around 4100
    > Singlecore: 1146
    > Multi-core: 2938
    After
    > Idle temp 37 °C, during test temperature hovered around 80-99 °C, mostly 98 °C.
    > Max RPM: around 4000
    > Singlecore: 1121
    > Multi-core: 3511
    Cinebench R20
    Before
    > Idle temp 45 °C, during test temperature instantly rose to 100 °C and stayed there.
    > Max RPM: around 6600
    > Score: 986
    After
    > Idle temp 39 °C, during test temperature shortly hit 100 °C and then hovered between 90-99 °C. A few times the temperature stabilized at 92 °C and 96 °C.
    > Max RPM: around 4000
    > Score: 1131
During testing, the bottom of the laptop does not get so hot that it hurts. I'll let you know if anything changes. Thank you carcrazy for now! It's a simple effective solution for little money :)

One thing , did you unplug the fan since it doesn’t do anything besides just annoy ?

    • @Kliklink
      @Kliklink 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

@@armeniancrusader301 I definitely did not do that. The fan is not as effective as if a heat pipe were attached to it, but it is certainly not there for decoration. The laptop runs a lot cooler with the thermal pad mod, and the fan still helps to bring the temperature down. The air is (at least I thought with the i5 and i7 models) blown through the heatsink. As carcrazy explains in the video, the thermal pad mod increases the effectiveness of the fan. More air is blown through the "corrugated" style heat sink. I use the app Macs Fan Control to adjust the fan speed up (or just set it to automatic) whenever I want. I see a big difference when I set the fan to 5000-6000 RPM and when the fan does nothing.

It's a great idea and so simple. I don't have this macbook but thanks for the idea! Transfer the heat through direct contact to the aluminum chassis, why not if it's this easy! Aluminum is a great material for a heatsink! Most heatsinks are aluminum afterall.

You can see in his other video his Benchmarks best score is 1105, that is the highest score for an i5 in the standard list of Cinebench. So 157 higher score. Also you see that the heat is all the time around the 90 degrees. If I test my MacBook Air without thermal pad it is around the 100 degrees, all 4 cores. Thankfully, this section is almost exactly in the middle, where I (personally) never tend to place my legs.

On the i5 model, the heatsink is arranged like corrugated cardboard. Air can still pass through and around the system, the thermal pad mod simply increases the effective surface area of the heatsink by linking the original CPU heatsink with the aluminum bottom case. The only problem is that the bottom of your Macbook Air will be warmer but your mileage may vary as how hot the bottom cover gets depends on what you are doing and your ambient temperature.
