    You are absolutely right. I have a degree in Physics/Thermodynamics, and air drawn past a heat source is significantly less effective in cooling, as pushing air past. One reason is... when you push it past, you create pressure. That pressure has more density, and in turn can absorb more heat. Also... when pushing, the air slows slightly, giving more dwell time. On the suction side... air density is lowered, and velocity is higher.... if we are considering the same fan system. Think of it like using the same soldering iron, and a fat tip, vs a thin tip. It's all in the ability to transfer. SO... Apple just mad a bad judgment in tying to cool a modern laptop like it was a low power phone.

  • @raduionut8778
    @raduionut8778 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    I think the genius Apple idea was that the processor heatsink warms the air inside the machine, and the fan cooler pulls the hot air outside. So the connection between the heatsink and the fan is made by air :)))) I know

    You could hammer the backcover closer to the cpu, so the thermalpaste gets in contact. :)

  • @mohsentabouna6401

    ALEX READ THIS !
    in fact, the cover is not and should not make contact with cpu heatshield because the cover will get extremely hot and burn the user's 'lap, hand' etc.. it's actually a legal conformity also, that no touchable parts should exceed 43.3C' that's why there's an actual heat PROOF back tape on the back of the cover so heat doesn't transfer
    one could put thermal pads to link back cover with cpu for better cooling but the back will be way too hot and unsafe.
    the back cover supposedly acts as a tunnel to redirect air through the cpu shield and cool but it's very inefficient
    a video was made by LinusTechTips that you should check, Also alex you're an engineer with a lot of experience don't doubt yourself over apple fan boys in the comments. It doesn't take a genius to know that the cooling is inadequate.

    • @em0_tion
      @em0_tion 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@larrywildman4381 No, it's not just a performance issue, that's ONE of the consequences of poor cooling design. It's not normal for a CPU or the rest of the laptop components to always stay at high temperatures. Think of it as a convection oven. Everything gets slowly cooked with time. Broken plastic/hinges, stuck fan, defective RAM stick, brittle/shorted LVDS cable, damaged GPU/VRAM chip, dead batteries, etc... i've seen all kinds of heat damage. And that's on normal laptops with enough cooling, the owners just never changed the thermal paste. Imagine what poor design + maintenance will do to this 🍎 -> RIP 💀

      @larrywildman4381 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@em0_tion I didn't say it's just a performance issue ... I said it's first of all a performance issue. Of course in the long run, on average, you will have a reliability issue. Anyway there is a misconception about thermal stress .... it's not just about high temperature, it's more about rapid e frequent change in temperature ... in other words, it's not just a function of max temperature, but a function of how temperature evolve during time.

My suggestion for trying to see thermals with cover on was not because I thought the cover will act as a heatsink. I saw two comments from VERY knowledgeable persons in the repair scene suggesting that the back cover needs to be on for the cooling to be effective. Neither of them suggested that the CPU heat sink makes contact with the cover. What they said is that the cover completes a duct and cool air is pulled from the side opposite the fan, over the heat sink, then out from the fan. You can check if the air from the fan is hot with the cover on and cool with the cover off to confirm their suggestions.

    That black stuff on the cover is thermal insolator. It's used becouse aluminium cover could burn users skin if cpu heatsink could transfer some heat to it (even if it didn't make physical contact). But having cover on can have another effect. It could improve air flow over cpu heatsink. I didn't see new macbook air in real life, so I can't be sure. It's just my guess. But I know for a fact, that it's still not enough, based on published test results.

    The cover doesn’t make at all contact with the cpu, it’s not a heat sink.

    I do not know what happen to the design intention. My guess is that there some heatpipe is missing. I had also an unusual case in the past with a HP NW9440. Overheating after some time. It has a single fan with separate CPU and GPU heatpipes and fins going into the same outlet blowers. I check the temperature with a monitoring app which show the GPU temp was too high. But in effect the heatsink pipe of the CPU was empty. So my conclusion was threefold: 1. Apps messesd up the reading. 2. Heatpipes could leak over time. 3. Do not buy used heatpipes (or check with a solderer if they transport). Thanks for sharing. If you get a Dell M6700 or similar enjoy the built quality to sustain the scrap that come later.

This however does appear from your video not to have vents!

    Would adding a thermal pad help any, so at least some of the heat could dissipate through the cover?

    There is no doubt based on your observations and theory, that it is a poorly designed device. I am sure that these units will develop problems down the road with overheating. Repairing them will not solve the problem because it will continue. I personally would not repair them because of return issues. It will put a burden of liability on the repair centers. I have always felt that Apple was not in favor of outside shops making repairs to their products.

    there is a thermal pad that makes contact with the cpu....and the pad has contact with the back housing which acts as a heatsink

  • @himanshutripathi7441

    Looks like scraping the tape of backcover and putting a thermal pad might give it some extra thermal headroom.

    • @seephor
      @seephor 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was also thinking this but in may actually make it worse because now you're going from a "supposed" active cooler to a passive one since at that point you have zero airflow over the CPU heatsink. Not sure which would be better. I'm assuming (big assumption) that the Apple engineers probably found the airflow to be worse for thermals than using the back cover as a passive heatsink.

  • @GabrielePresicci

    I think that the "cooling" is supposed to work by positive/negative pressure, which is embarrassing considering that adding a heat pipe (even just a tiny one) would have address the issue on a minimal but functional percentage. Those who said that back cover embedded an air channel is not true. Ventilation is not air channel. Moreover, as Alex showed us, the heatsink is making no contact at all on the cover. It also makes me laughing that the black shield between cover and heatsink is supposed to block heat from spreading. Usually that shield is made of copper underneath.
    Imo it makes absolutely no sense.
    You could try putting a thermal pad in between heatsink and cover and give it a shot, but you'd gain 6/10 degrees and turn your lap into fire.

    I think the reason why they didnt put a nice looking heatsink on the processor is: they wanted a thinner laptop. Aaand it is thin as fck! Well done. Nobody wants anything to do on this mashine.. No work, no play allowed BUT facebook and internet working fine. Who wants to do anything more? :)

    • @Billy-rr7re

      I have seen cellphones with heatpipes, cellphones thinner than this crap. so there is no excuse. not that a tiny heat pipe will make a huge difference.

    • @2bad83

      But it’s not true because this is a perfect example of when sales step in to design process to make the laptop last up until it’s warranty period and that’s it?

  • @ProfessorKroog
    @ProfessorKroog 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    There is probably less cooling so Apple can say fewer raw materials were used to make their new laptops than ever before - thus saving the environment. Except that it doesn't because they will need to make you a new laptop 2 years from now.

    • @parochial2356
      @parochial2356 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yup, people who run their businesses from the bed will really save on heating bills when they leave their apple on the covers and set the house on fire. Once on site, Fire Departments cut the electrical power asap. Hence the reduced electrical bill. Don't forget the ongoing utility savings while you wait on the insurance company to settle and contractors to repair your home and restore it to habitable condition.
