How to Fix The 2020 MacBook Air's Cooling in Under 10 Minutes

I've seen several people say that they're hesitant to open their new 2020 MacBook Air to try and resolve the overheating issues plaguing the community. It's a great idea and so simple. I don't have this macbook but thanks for the idea! Transfer the heat through direct contact to the aluminum chassis, why not if it's this easy! Aluminum is a great material for a heatsink! Most heatsinks are aluminum afterall. As someone else in the comments has said, if you don't mind permanently modifying your laptop, remove that black tape for better contact directly to the aluminum.

there is a tunnel, a cover with a body and spacers. a fan pushes air through the tunnel. you closed the air passage through the tunnel, parts may burn out from overheating.

I did it finally! Thermal pad improved my 2019 macbook air by alittle bit but the big change came when I put the copper shim and applied new thermal paste! It is a big change and basically didnt see my macbook go above 60 celsius in the CPU while doing normal work as before it would go to 99 just watching netflix.... There is not a huge improvement in the performance but staying cool makes it not lagg at all! Do it if u have 2018-2020 intel macbook airs! Oh and removing the insulating pad on the back of the macbook case improved cooling as well!

  • @pablopolar9034

i think the issue with this, is the heatsink being too short , also it doesnt have any seal between the fan and the heatsink.

@@F-MK96 Hey I just want you to know that I removed the insulator pad between the CPU and aluminum bottom, and replaced it with Thermal pad. Thereby gaining 15% CPU performance in Geekbench 5. CPU Temp rarely goes up above 90C, which was often the case before the mod. Battery temp does not rise significantly thanks to external cooling fan. When using the laptop along with a protective case, the bottom gets warm but the laptop’s temperature is not concerning.

my mba 2020 i3 base model (Aug 2020) lowest spec is downloading asphalt 8 using the epic games installer. its 43GB and this is the only time I've noticed high CPU temps of 94C (nothing more) (space / room temp is 23.3C). I am not sure if its a reason to do this mod but it makes me feel like I made a bad buy. The computer doesn't run slower its just louder and hot at the top of the keyboard. other than that. when use 2020 photoshop and a lot of other intense apps. the temps is usually around 55-65 70 for the most (app start up) and the noise and heat is low to not noticeable. I guess it's okay if its only during constant "write disks" time. meh. first and maybe last MacBook...only some time will tell
