      It is criminal for apple to release the Macbook Air without any proper cooling. i think they have done it deliberately to make people spend more money on the Pro. Yes you can use the Air for daily tasks but it should not be reaching temperatures that high just when watching a few youtube videos. I'm using a £200 Windows Notebook and I have no overheating issues so for a laptop that is £1000 it is a joke and i completely agree with you Max. The only thing is, it is pointless using Safari to watch 4k as it does not playback at 4K. Only chrome can do this hence why the temperature rose so quickly. Whether it be Zoom, BlueJeans or TeamLink, others were hearing my fans! For a brand new computer that was unacceptable. Using my trusty 2017 iPad for tele-conferencing now and there doesn't seem to be overheating and obviously no fan noise since there are no fans in it.

    The reason why MacBook Air got higher temp in chrome is probably because MacOS doesn’t support hardware decoding vp9 content. In safari, youtube only provide h.264 content, which can be hw decoded by mba. This is also why TH-cam on the Safari or other iOS devices can’t play 4K content.

      Intel Y series cpu used in 2020 MBA does not require active colling. And the fan is just for air ventilation (passive cooling). Intel i3 would be a better choice for normal stuffs since it has only 9W TDP compared to 10W TDP in i5/i7 models.

    • @stephen_l1474
      @stephen_l1474 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Aman Jaiswal I cant really agree with that, the entire video is trying to prove the MacBook Air is too hot.
      Edit: saying its 10W TDP is pretty useless for Intel chips because it always get way higher than that.

    • @stephen_l1474
      @stephen_l1474 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      thien nguyen my point is to prove connecting the fan to the heat sink is not a necessity. You comment seems to imply that the MacBook Air need a better cooling system, which I also agree on. But the way to a better cooling system, as proven by spectre 13.3, is not just connecting the fan to the heat sink.

    • @stephen_l1474
      @stephen_l1474 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      thien nguyen True, from photos of the ifixit teardown there seemed to have no other paths for the air to go through due to the battery basically touching the bottom panel, so I would guess the sealing is good. But of course I don’t have equipment to really measure it accurately, I hope someone would test that out. Still, that might be the reason why a lot of laptop makers still choose to go through the hassle of connecting it to the fan while very few laptops don’t.

I only had 5 tabs on safari, spotify/music app, spotify, and mac photos app and discord. this thing was at 80 - 100 degrees constantly. constant stuttering and its just not a great experience. One thing ive been using alot is screensharing and video calling for work due to covid-19. and the macbook air sucks when it comes to screensharing. The first 2 - 5 minutes it screenshares at full quality. but then the temps hit 100 and the boost clocks drop significantly. The screenshare is then running at 5-10fps with the fans blaring at full speed and temps at 100 degrees.

Thats what they were going for. HOWEVER, the issues with the air could have easily been fixed with a heatpipe. The case fan design is just a decision they decided to go for, for whatever reason. But now looking at the options when buying a macbook from apple. the macbook air i3 at $900 from select retailers is actually a very good deal. Years ago I switched to using Safari and I've been happy ever since, low ram usage, low CPU usage, fast web browsing, secure, pop-ups killed (with Wipr) and much longer battery life vs. chrome. If you're looking to do intense workloads over a long period of time, the MBA is not for you and never has been, there's MBP's for that. I've seen people compare XPS's to MBA's on TH-cam even though the MBA is considerably cheaper and is marketed as an everyday notebook for light tasks, the comparisons should be with a MBP.

    To those who saying "its normal for New MBA to get that hot and loud when playing 1440p/4K videos", let me tell you something. I once used the "old" Macbook 12 2017 which was fanless, with low powered cpu & super low powered graphic. Guess what? When playing 1440p videos or 4k at 30, the temp never gets to 100. Mind you this Mac is fanless (passively cooling) & has a basic internal graphic card. So, there is no excuse the new Air with so much power & graphics, should be making loud noise and gets hot like crazy when playing 1440/4k videos. Come on...just playing a video, not making a 2 hours 4K video editing. If Apple purposely thermal throttle the Air to seperate it from Pro, just make it fanless in the first place. Why bother putting a fan there without a connected heat sink? And why bother putting a quad core processor? Even if Apple put a 6-core processor in the Air, Apple fans will still defend it blindly and saying "oh its not a pro machine. It should be doing only typing or watch netflix".
    P/s: I am not an Apple hater. I owned MBA 2019 before with the same cooling problem and I can tell you I just couldn't stand the heat and noise!

    I have a 2019 i5 MBA and had tons of overheating problems and slowdowns, even on the OS alone. I am in a country in where you can't return a product once you bought it, so I tried my best to make it work; my 2014 MBP 13" had worked fine for 5 years. So I tried reinstalling OSX and when I went to the disk utility to format, it said that my SSD had a partition and 5 dependencies, which was really weird. Long story short I deleted all the partitions, created a new one with no dependencies, installed Catalina and my MBA now FLIES. Seriously, I went from not being able to have Lr, Ps and a video playing in the background at the same time, to having all of them open with several other background stuff as well (like mail, Spotify and What'sApp) with no slowdowns and no overheat (unless I push Ps really hard, but that's expected.)
    So hey, if you have overheating issues you might as well try this. It will take around an hour of your time but if my theory is correct, those phantom disks dependencies were causing a severe overhead generating too much heat, which is now gone. I'm enjoying my MBA A LOT now and my workflow is waaaaaaay faster too.

      But why.
      The only things you can do on MacOS that you can’t do on Windows/Linux is either
      1) using Apple only creative Apps which most people don’t need
      2) develop Mac OS, iOS Apps with Xcode
      3) use features within the eco system
      1. is not really a reason since there are more than a dozen alternatives on Windows / Linux
      2. well not everyone is developing for iOS and if you want to develop Apps you can do so for Android since it has way higher market share
      3. literally only valid point.
      Also video editing is no reason to get an overpriced Mac with Final Cut when you can get a big Workstation with 12 cores for the same money which renders your videos even faster than a Mac does (same goes for Ryzen 4000 laptops)

I should also note, I always delete files and videos from my computer after I am down with them, or I put them on an external hard drive, so that should should help with keeping enough free space. I am about worried though when it comes to those power boosting apps...Will it significantly slow down, say when I share a file or convert some thing on iMovies or dvd ripper? If that heatsink covering that quad core chip what a bit larger and the Max operating temperature never crossed 70c then this would have been the perfect machine for a lot of people. If by just playing a 4k video video this machine hits 100c, then final cut or any sort of photo editing will burn this thing.

Sudden high CPU usage even though heat reading is just around 50-60 degrees celcius. The only thing the resolves it is manually maxing the fan speed. But today, the speakers are popping. D:

Regardless I’ve spent %$2000 and on an i5 as a gift which hasn’t arrived yet and I am contemplating he not open and return the computer sticking to his current windows system. It’s completely unacceptable to be having to worry about overheating when doing what the air is designed for. Over time this is going to impact the longevity. I’m really torn on what to do.

      The Apple Stores are air conditioned. Try using one outside or in a room with a higher temperature. Thermodynamics (?) in play here. Higher ambient temperature means the air being inhaled has less cooling capacity. Humidity may also be a factor as AC units tend to remove a lot of water from the air.
      So one factor missing from these tests is a standard air temperature and humidity, something most people can't control. No scientific controls...

    You basically doubled down on your own conclusion, which is fine. But in my opinion, the core i5 model is still worth it if you can afford that extra $100. Yeah you get a hotter, louder system, but that’s expected when you get a more powerful laptop. Extra performance is always worth it for any task, even for basic productivity tasks and that’s a good thing. Also, people like me are willing to upgrade the performance just to future-proof their computer. You may disagree with that notion, but people still do it and it’s still a good idea.It’s true that Apple could have done better with the cooling system and they should definitely be called out for it, but it shouldn’t be a deal breaker. Also, no body plays Fortnite on a MacBook Air. So why do that pointless test? Overall, I still think TheJuan&Only has the better conclusion.

    What people seem to misunderstand about the air is the use case with heat issues. For the people who say they have no high temps or fans spinning like they hear from these test, that's because you AREN'T performing the tasks that cause the computer to be pushed. That's editing, rendering, heavily threaded applications that run complicated algorithms for longer than 5 seconds.

    Paying more to future-proof hardware equipment is none-sense. Byu hardware you can afford and need, and that works great as a package. The technology changes to quickly to pay extra for something that will have half the value in few years.
    Choosing Mac Air with 4-core is a strange decision.

    • @Char1es4k
      @Char1es4k 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you own a laptop that's still butter smooth to use 5 years later then it's called future-proofing.
      Why would anyone think 2 core CPU is acceptable in 2020? It's just a marketing strategy to convince people that their product is cheap but if you want to have decent specs and experience with it you'll have to pay extra. The most intersting part is that price difference of 2020 MBA between i3 and i5 is only 100 dollars while what customers should focus on is RAM upgrade instead of CPU cuz 8GB of RAM is the bottleneck of light weight multitasking. And the upgrade to 16GB is much more pricey than 100 dollars.
      Back to CPU and overheating issue. I'm not sure what to argue about this. Overheating is indeed exaggerated cuz most people out there doesn't watch 4k videos on a daily basis. Nor would they play games on an ultrabook. But other tasks like multiple word documents and browser tabs won't stress CPU that much if you use quad core i5 instead of i3.

I run Visual Studio, Xcode, Microsoft Office, and pages and don’t have this issue. I keep Pages on a separate desktop allows, I have Outlook, 6 or more tabs open in Safari & Xcode open with no issues. The only time I have an issue is when I open an iOS simulator with Xcode. Google Chrome is a resource intensive application, when Safari does the same thing. I have Chrome on the MBA I think I have only had to use it once, cause a Safari wouldn’t render the page correctly. Very rarely do I have a throttling issue, or the computer gets too hot on my lap.

      @@MaxTechOfficial I have an i3 and get the complete opposite to Dakota. I honestly feel people who say "the fan doesn't come on" are literally just not hearing it - it comes on more than you think, you just need to use an app to monitor it. I have done hours (and hours) of testing on my i3 and it gets hot quick!. An easy example is to load ign.com and scroll up and down the webpage. Your CPU temps will go up and up and up. Also, after watching Juan's video he seems to do a lot of loading web pages or apps and then just leaves it to settle before saying "oh the temps do go up but they go back down" - when you load a webpage or app you actually want to navigate it and this would be a far more useful test. In my results, temps rise and rise when actually USING the laptop and navigating the stuff you loaded. Another good example is the news app. Load it, but then actually scroll up and down on it - temps get very hot with this one (no idea why tbh). This is the first Macbook I've ever owned and saved for (which took me a while) and I completely regret buying it. £1000 and they didn't even included a heat pipe/sink!?!? Like why? Can anyone actually explain why this is ever EVER a good idea. Max, please revisit and do another video explaining to people my results (or test them yourself) that even simple browsing can cause high temps - (all was done using Safari)
