Self-Defense Options for Hold/Bears Hugs from Behind

  • While I still like the "traditional" Krav Maga defense(s) for Rear Bear Hugs, I believe it's important to have some other options/variations in your toolbox. If one possible solution doesn't work then you NEED to have something else to fall back on. Fighting is hard and situations like a bear hug are going to be a struggle. Having a few simple options will help give you a better chance of escape/survival. As always, practice these until they are muscle memory! Too many options could lead to paralysis by analysis.

Question(s) for the viewers: What's your go to bear hug defense? What defense techniques/principles would you like to see in the future? Did you enjoy all the hugging? Should we hug more? How ridiculous is my hair?

I misread the title and thought this was a Khabib video on how to defend yourself against bears

What's more dangerous? A Khabib or a bear?

I actually loved the kneebar in some Sanda rulesets from the arms in "bearhug" as you call it especially since the scissor and reverse scissor takedowns also set up the kneebar, which is set up by my favorite kick, the side kick (which don't work btw). I like that self defense guys like you guys take into account both striking and grappling as an option whereas a lot of MMA gyms I've found in the US separate the two which isn't a thing in Asia with things like Sanda.

What is a side kick? ;). I'm glad you brought up the knee bar! I struggled with whether to cover it or not. It's DEFINITELY there and I think it's a viable options if you're good at them. HOWEVER, haha, I don't like it as much for self-defense because if you mess it up then you're potentially on the ground with someone most likely bigger and stronger than you --- especially if we're talking a smaller woman against a huge creeper dude. But for someone like you, yeah, knee bar the shiz out of them! Thanks, Ryan! Appreciate the support.

From the KM side of things, there's also the Upper-Cut kick that can be used to target the groin either hands in / hands free. I'm glad you didn't show stomping on the toes, because that doesn't work anywhere. For the kettlebell swing one, what if he doesn't let go? He has your back and you're on the ground. There's another one I like, as long as the size and weight is about the same - step behind, gather both legs, then fall back hard landing on him.
Not throwing shade, because we all need our labs to try things out. Just responding - thanks for the video.

So I'd throw the kick in with the traditional one. I personally don't love it because I think it will take more than a blind kick to end things, but yeah it can help. I haven't had that issue on the kettlebell swing, but maybe? There's always a risk with every move though. I did wanna do the leg gather and drop, but alas, I have to keep the video short :).
At the end of the day, the video is actually less about the techniques and more about having multiple options and not one solution for a problem.
      Thanks for viewing. 🙏🤙

Man, you can show how escape hold arms behind, chicken wing is the name I think. One hard challenge: is possible escape to bearhug with hands tied behind or in front, using just legs and head?

Thanks for a great video :) another option I like is to fish for a finger and then break the bearhug by breaking his finger

Thanks, Simon! I've done the finger break too and I worry a little bit about the fine motor skills of it, BUT it's always good to have another option --- especially one they might not expect like the one you described.
I appreciate your support, good sir!
