The level of not just music perception but also fine memory in general that Wolfgang showcased at the age of 14 is something to be expected of a great master with decades of experience. This episode still haunts me, how one kid was able to individually hear 9 voices and thus memorize a 5-6 minute piece on the spot. Honestly I don't think even a great master would be able to do this.

I looked up whether Mozart was Catholic or Protestant, thinking that he was probably like "Go ahead, excommunicate me, oh no, wait, you can't BUAHAHAHA" but no, he and his family were actually quite observant Catholics. Can't decide if I'm impressed or if I'm mad that Leopold was ok with risking excommunication for his child. Even if it would have been for a dumb reason.

Allegri's Miserere actually went through a series of changes. The original version was composed in the 1630s. Even before Mozart wrote it down from memory, it went through some changes (most notably the second half of the first verse, one of the voices transposed up an octave and Aliferi's change on the third verse). The next change was adding some ornaments, possibly in 1771. The current version was born from a mistake made by W. S. Rockstro in 1880.

In all musical genres, originals have been adapted and modified. It’s a bit like saying a particular cover of a Dylan song is “better” than the original; or saying that Roxy Music’s cover of Jealous Guy is “better” than John Lennon’s original.
Both the original and cover can be enjoyed separately, on their own merits, without making a subjective judgment that one is “better” than the other.

This version with the so-called 'secret' notes was written in 1880 and is mostly performed nowadays. With the famous "top C" in the second half of the 4-voice falsobordone, it is published by William Smyth Rockstro in the first edition of the Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians (1880). Remembering and transcribing the layout of this formulaic piece was within Mozart's powers, but no Mozart manuscript of the Miserere is known. As far as is known, Mozar 's version was not performed during or after his life. The only references are his dad’s vague letter at the time, and his sister’s recollections 20 years later. It was only after Rocksto's publication in 1880 that the composition became extremely popular.

One of the many Mozart myths, like the one about him being buried in a pauper’s grave. There were various transcriptions.
Please don’t confuse Mozart’s Miserere with Allegri’s Miserere. They are substantially different, although Mozart may have been influenced by Allegri. already in circulation - fact.
Allegri’s original was simpler in form (closer to Gregorian Chant), lacking the embellishments which appeared in later versions, such as the top C. So, why would the Pope keep it a closely guarded secret?
This type of choral music is part of Catholic heritage and has its roots in the ancient Gregorian Plainchant renditions of the various Old Testament psalms which monks and nuns have chanted throughout the centuries, for the glory of God. In this case, Psalm 51(50), a psalm attributed to King David.
I suspect few non-Catholics would have shown any interest in this type of music in the 17th and 18th centuries, especially as The Age of Enlightenment was unfolding (and some would have actively condemned it).
I am glad that more and more non-Catholics are beginning to appreciate this type of music, not just for the singing, but for the actual meaning of the words.

9:19 is false. As you can hear from the Abs out of the key, the key change is unintentional.... it is mendalsons embellishment for the earlier section. But the magazine editor who published this piece in an article in late 1880s forgot to transposition from c minor down to g minor, and put it in that second section not the first, so it sounds exotic. Mozart’s version would have been more faithful to the original that stays in G minor ... if the story is even true. We here the 1900s version derived from that article ....

Unfortunately the Story you tell here is a lie. While it is commonly agreed that Mozart did transcribe Allegri's Miserere, there is no record of a Papal Edict ever being issued by the pope in 1637 and records exist showing that the piece was performed twice in London before Mozart had even head it.Leopold Mozart had a habit of embellishing the truth (or straight-up lying) in order to increase Mozart's fame and so the letter itself is dubious. It is also worth nothing that the embellishments that you spoke of which were "the secrets of the Sistine Chapel" were actually written in by a composer in the 19th century and the famous top C was a musicological error from Groves Dictionary of Music and Musicians, 1881, where the Author (WS Rockstro) used two different editions of the Miserere, one of which was transposed up a 4th. Apologies for destroying what is, undoubtedly, a very charming story.
