In yesterday's IndyCar qualifying Felix Rosenqvist posted a lap time of 1:45:454. That's more than 5 seconds faster than the IndyCar lap shown in this video.
Tim O'Glock Colton Herta won the race at COTA today, 18 year old Rookie. The racing I saw today irl was nothing like the right side of the video haha i wish this could be updated, makes indy look slow
and 15 seconds slower than the 2018 Hamilton Mercedes F1 ... I heard from experts, that the F1 2019 will be faster than 4 seconds in the 2018 vehicle counters. so it is possible that the F1 car can achieve a lap time of 1 minute and 27 or 28 seconds ..wooooooow
@@chibixxmoon Because Indy is slow in comparison with F1 You just can't compare... You just have to see that the drivers that can't succeed in F1 end up in Indy... That doesnt tell you nothing? Marcos Casado so they are good enough to drive in formula one for a few seasons which would make them one of the top 20 drivers in the world but as soon as they move to Indy they suck? F1 is all about the car. Thy never had good enough ride in F1. They became stars in Indy because it is a spec series where the cars are on a much more level playing field. Decent. Yeah, Verstappen in Q3 went 1.47.765 with Latifi lapping at 2.21.611 for Q1, split at 33.846, almost double the time here. And if you factor in that the quali lap for Indy was 5 seconds faster, that knocks it down to 12. Verstappen almost tripled it. Granted resurfacing and cold temps. But yeah, Turkey was not pretty, threw everyone's average gap over teammate stats right out the window. The average distance from pole to P20 as of post Turkey was 5.198 seconds, before that it was only 2.918. 2020 has been a banger!
John McKenzie indycar is only hated on because of napcar soiling America’s Motorsport name. Indycar is very different from F1 and the main reason why I don’t like interacting with 80% of F1 fans is because they think f1 is soooooo much better than anything else. F1s and indys dont even look that similar but u go on and watch cocomellon Mr.BigBoy.
I think the worst part about IndyCar is the massive inferiority complex the fans have when it comes to anything to do with Formula 1. Go on almost any IndyCar video and the comments are literally filled with people reassuring themselves and each other over and over that "IndyCar is so much better than F1 because....". I don't get it. You're allowed to like IndyCar guys. You don't need to validate it. Just because Formula 1 cars are faster on a track doesn't make IndyCar any better or worse it's just a simple comparison of 2 different series. I'd love to see them stick a stock car on this track and compare that too. Both of these cars would destroy a stock car on a road course, that doesn't mean NASCAR sucks. Summary of the pep talk: it's OK to be an IndyCar fan. Nobody is judging you just because Formula 1 cars are faster. Feel better?
Are you joking? 90% of the live stream chat from this very test, are filled of F1 fans saying stupid shit about Indycar. You can even go see it for yourself.
The F1 fans are by far the worst of the two fanbases, go to any IndyCar post on WTF1 or livestream and all the comments from F1 are just stupid ignorant shit because they think they´re some sort of elitist fanbase, which is not true. The one thing that should be commen sense when you compare F1 to Indy is that any sane Motorsport fan who wants to se a good race with good on track action where the driver is the most important part should pick to watch an IndyCar race over a F1 race any day.
It is fun to compare the cars. I enjoy it and I'm a huge fan of both disciplines, including Nascar, drag racing or two snails running across the floor. I'll watch 'em because it's racing. I watch every one of those series when they are on TV. I follow them all. I hope we all can enjoy all racing for what it's worth: entertainment. The incredible acceleration and track stickiness of F1 cars, the insane 235+ MPH top speed of the Indy cars, the sound and excitement of 40+ Nascars tearing around tracks, the slickness of E-racing and the TT on the Isle of Mann. What we see are drivers with huge testicles and skill that we dream of having. We are in awe. Let's not negatively compare the series to each other. Ironically the two drivers shown here in this clip are my favorites from their respective series.
or if were gonna do the f1 comparison, have ericsons laps side by side, one his lap from f1 last year and 1 from indy this year. It'd be cool to see the same driver in 2 different cars.
@@dbman992 That's actually a good idea. I'd bet the pole lap from the IndyCar race will be faster than race pace laps from backmarkers in F1. That's not saying F1 isn't impressive, it's just the context that you compare the two that matters and people on here seem to have no idea what context means.
@@cosmic_drew - Are you kidding me? So-called "backmerkers" in F1 are usually about 3 or 4 seconds per lap off the front-runners at worst, depending on the circuit. That Indycar was still a good 10 seconds or so off the backmarkers' race pace. In what universe does that equate to "keeping up" with F1 cars?
@@quintenzappe3412 I meant f1 with not knowing who is going to win! Max and Hamilton are battling it out let alone Perez, Lando, and Bottas in the mix.
it's huge. really it's a huge difference. Even late 90s F1 is faster than modern Indycar. The McLaren MP4/13 did a run at laguna seca like 10 months ago and it was 1 second faster than pole position in Indycar's race there, and that was with the MP4/13 not being pushed 100% for obvious reasons, not being in the same fresh state it was 24 years ago and not having era-representative soft tires. It could easily go 3 to 4 seconds faster than modern Indycar. F1 is crazy
Me too. Long time IndyCar fan, so biased of course. But I hope those that have been to the F1 race come out and see this and get into the Paddock. I think they will be blown away by how close they can get, and how approachable, friendly and personable the teams are. It's just so much more fun.
I'm a huge F1 fan, but IndyCars look so good, even with the new Aero screen. The racing is great too, epically the road and street circuits. Road America is and awesome track!
Yes. The aeroscreens don't really bother me like I thought they might. Especially after the crash at Iowa, I think they were a good idea. Sounds like the extra air duct is helping with cockpit temps too. Mid Ohio this weekend.!!
Thanks for putting together this interesting comparison. The F1 brakes later and carries a lot more corner speed. I don't see why every one wants to make it a D measuring contest. It's an interesting conversation to see how these 2 very different animals compare in speed and resulting time. Would love to see something like this for the early '90s when CART was at its peak technologically.
Don't think there were any crossover tracks with 90's CART, but in 2006 Champcar pole at Montreal was 1:20, F1 was 1.15. Different everything, but that was the last closest comparison at a race weekend.
I wish these sports mingled more. It's awesome to see the technical prowess F1 has but I'd love to see F1's drivers all set up in indycars, just spec, to see who's really the best of the best.
@@di_aqua right, it’s a spec series though. Certain teams will still have advantages due to setup knowledge and experience but the equipment is in theory the same.
man this comment section is cancer. Indycar isn't supposed to be faster than F1. It's supposed to be an open wheel spec series that runs both road courses and oval courses. Beyond both being open wheel, the two are nothing alike, they are designed for two completely different calendars. It's like comparing LMP1 to Formula E, absolutely stupid.

@@richarddobson3138 that's pretty much an extension of what I just said so idk why you're saying this like I would disagree with you. Indycar is faster on oval, F1 is faster on road. Neither of those two things matter, what's important is the racing. No point in caring how fast they're going if the racing sucks as much as F1 does.
Isn't this pretty much what everyone expected? We already knew F1 cars were immensely faster. It'll be more interesting to compare race/qualifying lap times but it's expected there's going to be an enormous gap.
Indycar program costs around $10 million, F1 $135 million. Sort of makes sense which is the faster machine. F1 is the pinacle of racing but I much prefer the competitiveness and balance of IndyCar - makes for a better viewing experience.
@@m.a.i7324 do you realize a large part of indycars audience is in oceania and scandinavia? Indycar has lots of international drivers. Most americans care more about nascar. I only like indycar because its better racing, not because its american. You never know who's gonna win an indycar race.
I give IndyCar drivers massive credit for wrestling those things around a track, it doesn’t look easy. Compare that to Lewis’ car going precisely wherever he points it
Its because F1 drivers don't have to push their cars to the limit, the difference usually is several hundreds of second while in IndyCar all cars are equal and drivers go over the limit to win.
@@nathanforrest7606 It's the downforce. The sheer force the car generates at speed keeps it stuck to the road like its on rails. If you see them take some of the famous chicanes in person, it actually looks physically impossible.
I appreciate this is 3 years after you made this comment, but doesn’t Indy use different spec of cars for the oval tracks compared to normal tracks? Or has that happened since making this comment?
I knew that once Indy was on COTA, everyone would be arguing and comparing the two because they are open wheel cars and at the top of their respective ladders. Yes Indy is slower. Yes F1 is basically the absolute pinnicle of technilogical achievement. Yes Champcar was faster with more than 1000 hp, but why argue what's better...it's completely moot. Two completely different cars with two completely different rulesets. Racing is awesome! We all love it. It uses the same physics. Some are slower, some are faster, some are about technology and engineering and some are about the human user. Watch autocross, it's so frickin' fun to watch, and it is slow as fuck, but it's racing and that's what it's all about. Now if Indy and F1 had a series weekend together, that would be amazing...who's got the financial backing here to make that happen? Comon!
Montreal or Indy GP would be good for that in their respective dates. Indy GP would be in early May and build hype for the Indy 500 and Montreal is Canadian.

@@themarketm8382 it's all to please motor companies. F1 doesn't really care much for sustainability. They've recently added races in countries with lots of oil after all. The thing is cars are either going electric or hybrid. However, to keep an ice engine, they'd have to use sustainable fuels to run them. Companies like Mercedes, Porsche and Toyota have been very vocal about sustainability in their projects. With their fuel, F1 would be making a lot of money. Another thing is the low emission V6s with hybrid systems are developed so car manufacturers can make more efficient engines. Going back to V10s (or V8s, which I prefer) would mean falling out with all of these companies who are looking for sustainability and efficiency. Believe it or not, this trend is mostly for economic benefits. As much as I like the push towards sustainability, F1 isn't doing it for moral reasons Edit: also, another thing is it would likely cost manufacturers a lot money to redevelop V8s/V10s, which is a fair point. At the moment, Renault, Mercedes, Ferrari and Honda have similar engines. They wouldn't wanna risk another team having an enormous advantage through engine development, like Mercedes in 2014

That’s the biggest problem with Indycar, they need more horsepower. Late 90s CART was epic to watch because they were ~1000HP. It made your balls tingle watching them race. Now they look boring.
Because this video is about comparison of laptimes at COTA, that is, who is fater at COTA. And people saying F1 is faster here are merely stating a fact. Which sport is better or more entertaining is not the subject of this video. And if people want to debate that, then that's their own fault.
I enjoy watching F1, IndyCar, MotoGP, NASCAR, and practically all kinds of motorsports. They're all unique in their own ways, no need to compare and rank which is the best and worst
Comparing Hamilton's 2018 pole lap and a IndyCar preseason testing lap is absurd from the start. Considering the triple digit million dollar budget differences for just one F1 team, IndyCar produces an incredible racing machine and franchise. 231 MPH pole speed for the 2020 Indy 500 is jaw dropping and I'm pretty sure an F1 car wouldn't be competitive at Indy because they're hybrids and rely on energy harvesting to replenish their battery and at Indy it's flat out, very little braking. I watch and love both series. They are 2 different animals, both exceptional at what they do.
For simple perspective Indycar speeds around a balanced circuit are almost exactly equal to f2. 17 seconds a lap slower is going to get lapped every 6 laps. 17 seconds is such a big margin that no matter how much you analyse it they are two different worlds, from the fastest teams to the slowest the difference is massive. If F1 raced ovals then the top end would also be higher, it's clearly not beneficial on any f1 circuit so they just don't need it.
It’ll be interesting to see how much better a qualifying lap would be for indycar. I love both for different reasons, and it’s awesome to see them compared
The 90’s CART were a lot closer to F1, because there were 3 different chassis (Reynard, Lola, Penske) 3 different motor (Mercedes, Honda, Ford) and two different tires (Firestone, Goodyear) It was real competition.
The closest margin between them was in the 50s. I mean, F1 used to run the Indy 500 as a FIA WC race, and Indy cars just outclassed F1 cars all decade long Then again, when did IndyCar series start again?

lap times dont matter in tv broadcast. the public want to see real spectacle, car to car racing. in f1 only matter the constructor of the car, its a engineering race, not a drivers championship
Because IndyCar drivers and races are better, and F1 fans just can't take it by definition. The best are the fans who are fans of both series they understand limitations and respect all.
That's not the argument..The argument is that IndyCar has a faster top speed on an oval and they run at that speed the whole race...IndyCar would destroy F1 car on oval track...Fact.. Yes F1 are far more advanced... But for 500 miles without lifting IndyCar would win...Period
Of course F1 will be faster. It is an unlimited budget series with an emphasis on cutting edge technology. IndyCar is a spec series. The question is, which will provide a better, more exciting race at COTA? My money is on IndyCar. It's painful to say it, but the the utter lack of competitiveness in F1 has made its races a predictable, colossal bore. All the excitement of watching paint dry.
Wow. Thanks for the video. I always wondered which was faster nowadays. Both cars are super fast with the F1 car being the obvious faster one on this video. The F1 and IRL racing series specifications are different though. Still, I like the way both cars look and sound on the track. Watching a race with similar spec cars, makes for the excitement, whether it be F1, IRL, Nascar, etc. Personally, I grew up with the media touting the Indianapolis 500 as the greatest racing event, and so I am partial to the sound of the term "Indianapolis".

F1 with Ham feels like sliding and waving thru the corners Indy feels like a rough potatoe bouncing and fighting their way in. I've got to bring more respect to these drivers.
Look at how much harder to drive the IndyCar is. The driver is giving constant corrections round the corners and is even having to steer on the straights. Hamilton can just point the F1 car where he wants it and it sticks. Would like it if F1 cars became more difficult to drive again, even if it meant they were slower.
Just saying, having a car fight you isn't a sign of it being difficult to drive; but the signs of forgiveness and flexibility at the cars limits. F1 cars have a tendency to look like they are on rails until they just snap out. This is due to downforce, not the car just easily turning corners. In reality, F1 fights the drivers all the time. A big part of F1 is per-race setup on a car design/package that is bespoke to that constructor. Hamilton has a very smooth racing style with a long-rake Mercedes and spent the entire weekend dialling in the car's setup to his perfection to pull off a close to perfect qualy lap. A short rake car might looks a lot more twitchy, such as Max Verstappen in his Red Bull.
@@denmark39 actually they don't. they geared for the track they race, as is the downforce. Montoya had a top speed of 370kmh at Immola in a williams, and could have gone faster if a longer straight. So your assumption is wrong!
Victor Graca it was a Williams BMW back then when F1 cars were slimmer. Today’s top speed is lower but cornering speed is much higher. Montoya’s BMW would do poorly on a medium and low speed tracks. @@denmark39 F1 have much better aerodynamics, more engine-power and less weight, so it´s how Victor Garcia already wrote just a question of gearbox, it would be no problem for a F1 to go way over 400 Kmh on a oval.. at the end a comparison don´t make sens because F1 is simply much much more expensive, that´s why the performance is better. ps. sorry for my bad English.
Kona Ice Cup Series that’s a very objective question, if you want to watch pure racing skill, then indycar, but there’s more money in F1 so the better drivers usually go there. @@mabra33 Pure racing skill in the sense that all the cars are the same, so the racing is just from drivers skill. And although I've never driven an indy car or an F1 car, and I doubt you have either, I would argue that the less amount of downforce on the indy car would make it more difficult to drive.
Little unfair since Indycar is just in testing. I'd imagine once they run qualifying they will be around 15 seconds slower. However I'd exchange slower cars for better racing all day everyday. Fan of both, but there no doubt which one requires more driver input to drive
Fan of both as well and last season Indycar had some great racing and one of the best overtakes I have seen in any racing series happened during the long beach race, definitely one of the must watch championships for all race fans. Also, a car requiring more driver input to drive could indicate an issue with drive ability which is based on a number of factors from setup, to driver's driving style to chassis/engine design. Looking at it the rear of that Indycar seemed very loose every time the driver got on the power which could be dealt with with a setup adjustment and then it would require less steering input to manage. It also looks like the Indycar has less power steering and steering damping than the F1 car so all the little bumps are much more noticeable but this is expected since Indycars generate less downforce so less force resisting steering inputs.
@@torque2802 They were talking about significant tire fall off after only 2 or 3 laps. I hope Firestone can conjure up a compound and the setups get more dialed to make it more stable on race weekend.

I am just glad to finally see a good comparison between the two cars. Now, let's see an F1 racecar take some laps around the oval at Indy. Would love to see those lap times.
It's taken a great deal of time but IndyCar is almost back to those days. The cars are a handful to drive, the competition is fiercer than it has been, they're going back to iconic tracks, and soon they will be back to 1000HP which is a major plus.
I gave up on indycar after Dan Wheldons death, was a big fan of him and it was really sad to see. I watch it from time to time if its on but dont follow it as much as i used too.

Watch the drivers hands, as Senna said after his Indycar test. It’s nice to be in control and to drive a car again as opposed to managing a computer. I’ve said it for years. Put F1 drivers in Indy Cars with F1 liveries on F1 tracks and watch the sparks fly. That’s the sport we want.
It would be interesting to see a spec series like Indycar but with much faster cars than Indycar. Fenders would already take 2 or 3 seconds off the time. Then, there are things like raised noses, winglets, more horsepower, blown diffusers, active suspensions that would certainly make them significantly faster. Imagine a spec series with cars as fast as F1 cars. That would be spectacular imo
These Comments make me question why we watch racing..? It’s to be entertained... and frankly, IndyCar is consistently way more entertaining from the drop of the green flag to the white flag...
They are built for different track layouts and therefore excell in different areas. Put them both on an oval and the faster car will be the Indycar. I watch F1 but really we need rules brought in to reduce the turbulent air that comes off the rear wing because some races are just a procession from the qualifying positions.
Oval racing doesn’t interest me but it does have more overtaking and slipstreaming whereas F1 I prefer the track layouts but a race like Monaco and some others are a complete bore. Either change the rear wings or change the non overtaking tracks. F1 doesn’t do itself any favours with those races. It seems you want to criticise Americans but there have been some Americans who came into F1 and was successful. Of course the same goes the other way but it’s not about Indycar vs F1 but how to improve the sport. As things stand they both have problems that need solving otherwise they will die out.

It certainly looks like the specs on the F1 machines make for more speed through turns, more rapid deceleration under braking, I couldn't tell about top straight line speed. The tires on the F1 cars looked like they put substantially more rubber on the track surface which would make a huge difference on a road surface for all three dynamic situations, acceleration, breaking and turning. I suspect the F1 cars might STILL have an advantage on an oval like Indianapolis, but maybe the gap would be less? A track like COTA is the natural habitat of the F1 technology, everything tailored made for that. The F1 stuff does look more demanding to drive, so it's hard to argue that their drivers aren't the very best. But the "space program" budgets of the F1 teams....wow! I suppose Indycar could spec up their machines and be as quick as F1, but that might not make for better racing for venues like the ovals. Would it compromise safety running F1 specs on ovals? I don't know. No reason not to love Indycar racing though. "Gentlemen (and and sometimes Ladies)....Start your Engines!" (I'm old school, sorry)
You cannot compare F1 and Indycar with each other because they are two different disciplines with their own character and identity.

The F1 fans are by far the worst of the two fanbases, go to any IndyCar post on WTF1 or livestream and all the comments from F1 are just stupid ignorant shit because they think they´re some sort of elitist fanbase, which is not true. The one thing that should be commen sense when you compare F1 to Indy is that any sane Motorsport fan who wants to se a good race with good on track action where the driver is the most important part should pick to watch an IndyCar race over a F1 race any day.
Ya there is a HUGE difference between hypothesis and reality
As much as I like the push towards sustainability, F1 isn't doing it for moral reasons
Edit: also, another thing is it would likely cost manufacturers a lot money to redevelop V8s/V10s, which is a fair point. At the moment, Renault, Mercedes, Ferrari and Honda have similar engines.

When you turn on the ghost of the fastest online lap time for the circuit...
Look at those seconds going up on the Indycar haha. Very extreme example though, a pole lap vs pre-season testing.

F1 with Ham feels like sliding and waving thru the corners
Indy feels like a rough potatoe bouncing and fighting their way in.
I wonder what the comparision would be on an Oval Track like Indy?
beninho106 the F1 car would loose because it has lower top speed
@@denmark39 actually they don't. they geared for the track they race, as is the downforce. Montoya had a top speed of 370kmh at Immola in a williams, and could have gone faster if a longer straight. So your assumption is wrong!
Victor Graca it was a Williams BMW back then when F1 cars were slimmer. Today’s top speed is lower but cornering speed is much higher. Montoya’s BMW would do poorly on a medium and low speed tracks. Little unfair since Indycar is just in testing. I'd imagine once they run qualifying they will be around 15 seconds slower. However I'd exchange slower cars for better racing all day everyday. Fan of both, but there no doubt which one requires more driver input to drive
You are right. I actually think they will improve by at least 5 seconds.
@@torque2802 IndyCars have no power steering actually.. lot more work from the driver needed

Almost 19 seconds faster! Speechless! Lewis and F1 are from a different planet!

They are built for different track layouts and therefore excell in different areas. Put them both on an oval and the faster car will be the Indycar. I watch F1 but really we need rules brought in to reduce the turbulent air that comes off the rear wing because some races are just a procession from the qualifying positions.
Thing is nobody normal wants to race on oval track. Only Americans who cant race on tracks with right turns will.
