  • As a former Formula 1 and current Indycar driver I wanted to share more about the differences between these two motorsports.
Sensations, ergonomics, speed, skills from the drivers : Indycar and Formula 1 are actually pretty different as a driver.

@@Syl31tls I'm in the USA, and believe me not as bad as what you describe, but it was horrible for us to watch too. I think I remember they mentioned they had changed the jumpsuits to a specification that was MORE fire retardant than the previous ones: 20 seconds instead of 10. As far as the gloves they hadn't gotten the new specification, so that was a contributing factor in his hands getting burned.

Simple answer is that F1 is a manufacturing series where the racing is about manufacturers building unique cars to compete. Indycar uses a standard chassis and spec components for most of the car, so the competition is more in setup and driving, not manufacturing. Sure there are the technical differences where F1 is more advanced and expensive. But the biggest is just the concept, manufacturers series vs drivers series.

I love in F1 the cars of a team look the same. I also like that they limit two cars per team. Indy team cars used to look the same. I do like that Indy isn't a constructors championship but I did like when they had a choice of engine and a choice of a couple different chassis. That really made for interesting combinations. I get that it's all about advertising dollars and keeping costs down but it does hurt the product. Great video

Thank you Romain. The way you describe the always-attacking driving style in indycar really resonates with me, as a huge diehard f1 fan. Glad you are alive and enjoying life. Indycar is still the pinnacle of global motorsports.

It always confused me hearing F1 fans complain about F1 racing being a bit dull with not enough passing, but then when Indycar is brought up they scoff.
    Is this just snobbery?

yeah, i feel like those people want the spectacle of F1 with the racing of Indycar, but the last time that ever happened was 2012

Another great video Romain. I have to say, I was watching a video the other day on F1 penalty points and the Gasly situation and unsurprisingly Spa 2012 came up. Watching again I still don't think you came close to deserving the blame that was heaped on you, or the race ban. It was a first lap, first corner incident and you really didn't do anything wrong. It was just too many cars to fit into the corner. I felt that way at the time too but the mob had spoken. Keep up the great racing.

I always enjoy your perspective on the two series. I think it's a shame that some of the Indy car drivers are not allowed to drive in F1 even though they have proven themselves under very stressful competition. Thanks for sharing your views. I wish Indy car would get into the 21st century and put power steering in their cars. If NASCAR can have power steering then Indy Car should to,

That was very informative. I prefer Indy racing. F1 has way better social media and I attribute that to a younger demo of the drivers, but that will be changing as long the young stars stay put. I remember when Colton first joined the Indy series he looked more aggressive than the other drivers, but now all the young drivers are as aggressive as he is, and I like that. I hope Romain has a good 2023.
