@@just-a-waffleNot true. LG provided 3 major software updates to their flagships closer to the end. The V60 shipped with Android 10 and is upgradeable all the way to 13. It should also be noted that most critical fixes are bundled into Google Play Services now anyway, so getting a new Android version isn't as big a deal as it used to be.
I agree with this. As foldables go it gives you the feeling of a regular phone with an optionally accessible foldable benefit of a little more screen space. At least thats the benefit I see in foldables.
Technically it doesn't "fold", but yes I really liked the form factor, was going to be my next phone when it released but after LG announced shutdown of mobile division I just couldn't justify buying it, and the fact there's no official retail of it in NZ
...No part of the LG wing folds, what are you smoking? The LG Wing is more akin to the old Sidekick with the display that pops out. Do you mean you think the LG Wing has the best 2nd screen experience?
Slight correction on the Ultra thin glass - it is actual glass. Its made by german glass maker Schott and it's been in use in foldables since basically the beginning if foldables. Though, as Schott put it - The biggest hurdles in making glass this thin and flexible are scratches and imperfections on the corners. So both have to be protected. The surface is protected by a plastic screen protector and the corners are guarded by the plastic rails. If there's a failure in these two protective machanisms, the glass wil break, as could be seen in a lot of the first generation foldables.
The IPX4 rating is literally the only reason I don't have this phone right now. Im not fussed about the waterproofing but I grind and polish metals and minerals for a living so I just can't own a foldable with all the dust and abrasives around me😢
I do woodworking on the side as well. I'm fine with keeping to a "bar" phone because it's just cheaper to get a flagship one of those and use it for 4 years or so. I had a Zenfone 6 before upgrading to the OnePlus 11. That flip up camera was still a champ despite the wood dust. Biggest reason why I haven't bought a folding phone is because the screens just break from normal use.
Also you can't put a case on a foldable. I occasionally have to climb up equipment and I'll use my phone flashlight if it's dark, over the years I've dropped mine from 10+ feet so an OtterBox is a 100% must have for me. I dropped my old pixel 3 from 13 feet and into a shallow pool of water, OtterBox kept it just as safe as could be.
15:22 "The preview is so much brighter than the playback". Its obvious the TH-cam app is lowering the brightness of the video to make the preview stand out more. You see the video return to normal brightness once you stop scrubbing the timeline. Feels a bit misleading that comment was left in the final edit when its obvious what's going on.
It would be fun to address the current shit show it has been to get one. Pre-Orders with wrong delivery dates and extremely weird customer support from OP. Made my order oct 19 and still no phone, delivery date was Nov 02 and they still don't know when it's going to ship lol. Just check the OP subreddit.
Not to mention they r not offering 24 months at 0% anymore since before pre-orders here in the USA were sold out; this makes more of a hassle to purchase and less attractive because, let's face it, most of us (even with good jobs) don't want to pay a $1500+ in less than a year because the monthly would be too high without even considering the additional cost of the carrier service...for just 1 device. Imagine a parent with more devices/carrier payments in the household for the family. It's ridiculous! This coming from a.long time One Plus loyal customer.
As someone who has wanted a Fold for a while but waited until the technology had matured, I can tell you it finally has. I absolutely love my OnePlus Open. It is amazing and even after more than half a year using it still makes me smile. The software runs very well, it looks stunning, and the more you use it the more new ways of using it you find. On top of all that they don't scam you with multiple phone options where the cheapest one is garbage, it's just one option: one that has 500gb storage and 16gb ram at a price point which destroys competition. Fantastic phone.
I have a OnePlus 8 5G (a price bump and slight upgrade of the Legendary OnePlus 7) and i have had zero issues with it as my daily for 3+ years. I cannot say enough good about OnePlus, glad to see them in the talk again
Did they ever fix the android auto issues? I bought an OP8 5G a couple years ago and AA would just disconnect randomly on its own even when plugged in.
Oneplus rates the screen at 1400 nits max brightness, 2800 peak brightness. 2800 is for thew absolute brightest single point on the screen during something like HDR mode. 1400 is what you can expect to measure with standard brightness testing.
Mine has been great since launch. There are some software quirks, but a lot of that is on the dev's end. If you think Linus is overstating how invisible the crease is, he's not, it's unseen with the screen on (and made my friend with a Fold 5 mad). My biggest complaint is they're only selling it direct, no carrier options.
I honestly feel like, if I were to go for a foldable, I'd prefer a clamshell one. I'm not a power user that needs the tablet-style unfold, but I love the smaller form-factor you get from the clamshells.
So opposite, I don't understand why they exist. Why would I want the same exact phone I have now, but it closes so I can't see the screen. Then add a smaller screen to see notifications. I can just have a normal phone and have notification appear on the display when locked.
@@deathab0ve tiny. pockets. Seriously though, I bought some Woman's (*supposedly unisex) pants this summer and they really do have the tiniest of pocket. Combined with the fact that most phones with Pro features like my Pixel 8 Pro are GIANT, I've very much come around to the weird folding-in-half formfactor in the past month.
@@kubotite9168 I assume from the profile pic you are female, and that would make sense for woman. Thier pockets are complete shit on most pants/short/other. As a male though I have only had 1 pant that the phone slightly peaked out of. My sister actively buys men's pants for this reason.
Been using mine for a week now. My only crib is that Nova is not yet optimised for open canvas. But it still works pretty ok. The included case bumper has already started peeling - getting a new clear case, but not too many choices right now. Overall, for productivity (excel, mediawatching, emails, kindle) its a great form factor. The speakers are amazing as is the screen brightness in day to day use. The fingerprint button is a bit of a hit or miss and the non-customisibility of the icons is another minor complaint. But a great phone for daily productive use.
I was reminded of a weird Huawei function I liked. It actually recognized when you used your knuckles to operate the touch screen and automatically selected the region. And the knuckle detection was pretty precise.
The great wall isn't visible from space with just the eye (iirc). Your place of residence is visible from space. Satellites are in space and they're used to look at the earth to take pictures, and they can see quite a lot.
That screenshot software is actually common on the regular non-flip version. I daily Oneplus, still absolutely love the brand and have burned through two phones in 4 years (arguably one, OnePlus 7 Pro which I replaced the battery in, nothing else wrong with it really. I have it in my closet as backup just in case I ever need a quick replacement).
the graphs in this video.. much clearer. love it. honestly... I think another youtube runtime would be good maybe a 1080p (even at most dimmable, though, for brightness id use the middle and just state what nitts-age? that is? lol) as this is a great middle-ground and what most people would watch on their phones, so would be more relatable. I guess I need upvotes for this to be seen but.. who knows lol.
The screen grab they showed when talking about peak screen brightness (2800 nits) literally said "Dolby Vision", which is in fact HDR... So it seems the 2800 nits IS in HDR mode They should've figured that out by reading what they included in the video.
when he opens the lg wing, the tutorial screen pops up. Was this filmed prior to him starting to use it? Using nova launcher with the wing allows full use of the secondary display with true multi tasking of running full desktop on top. forced auto rotate app is also needed. Regardless, I've always ran nova & forced auto rotate apps on all my android devices. The wing did not have the highest processor, so some games could not be ran at highest settings. The camera was also lackluster with focus issues. But as far as the secondary display goes, I loved it. putting the display to the side or as an overhead display above my main was great. running external calculator, copy pasting notes, comparing photos. All the ways I've been using my pixel fold, just @ a $350 price when I bought it. Ran the wing for 2 years. Loved it.
I have no problem buying used stuff but a foldable phone after a year of use or any kind of use unless it's mint 1 week use max, i wouldn't bother. They degrade so bad with time from what i heard and i wouldn't want to spend money on something with a crease in the middle with a couple of months before the screen dies.
@@koziray1994 as someone who has owned and have purchased some second hand foldables from the first generation Samsung fold, this is simply not true and ignorant thinking

A trick for fingerprint ID if you find they stop working after a few weeks (people with hard working hands know this pain) Teach the phone multiple fingers BUT use the same finger in different areas. Seems to have kept mine working a lot longer, clear down side you can only teach phones so many fingers...but don't you pretty much always use the same finger/thumb? Just a thought.
Regarding the price. If you get the device directly from the OnePlus site, they are offering a guaranteed $200 off with the trade in of literally any phone regardless of condition. So the phone is more like $1499 before taxes/shipping. And that $200 is a minimum amount. If you trade in a recent flagship they could knock like a grand off the price. So yes, it's still expensive, but OnePlus' trade in deal is amazing
@@G0A7 Yes. *Any* phone. I sent in a Samsung Galaxy S7. They basically just send it to a recycling facility, so it's a great way to get rid of e-waste you had collecting dust that you couldn't sell on eBay or wherever
It's hard to imagine a foldable holding up well past a year from just pocket lint/grit/dust ingress alone. I guess if you have the budget and are willing to get a new one every year a foldable is worth it. Or if you are real easy on your phone it would last as long as anything else. There must be market for them though since manufacturers keep making the things? Me? I prefer a 2-300 dollar unlocked mid range slab with an SD card slot and good water resistance and I keep it for a few years.
12:08 that's because the longetivity test is in the cover and the stress test is in the inside. Labs team, amazing work but I think you need to include a proper note to avoid confusion.
OnePlus is back to making cool stuff. I really dig their vision for software on some of their recent products. It feels somewhere between Apple and Google. Both of which make excellent software. But taking ideas from both sides and making your own is awesome.
This community picked the perfect phone for Linus. I'm glad he's having such a unique and positive experience with the best phone of all time, the LG Wing(tm).
0:50 The Great Wall of China can't actually be seen from space, or at least is no more visible than other large roads and buildings. It's basically just an old meme. In the late 19th century when people were starting to seriously speculate about the possibility of space travel people also thought Mars had several large canals crossing its surface. Because of that they thought narrow but very long and straight objects would be visible at great distances. The Great Wall was the only man-made structure at the time of comparable scale to the alleged Martian canals.
Hey Linus, I was wondering, since I work on a company with similar equipments, are your sensors n stuff in your lab calibrated on a yearly basis? Like do you send them to calibrate regularly? Maybe give us a video about that to show that your stuff works as intended:)
When you were scrubbing the video, it had a dark overlay on it which made the preview look brighter. You even momentarily saw the video without the overlay, it was as bright as the preview.
@@jesusbarrera6916 And 3d rendering got cheap beacuse everybody used it, no matter what happens to folding phones in both ways theyre gonna end cheaper
Called it, when linus asked people to recommend a new daily driver. OPPO is running constantly to one up Samsung specs and a slightly lower price and the improvements they do is impressive from gen to next gen.
If the LG Wing had a flagship processor it eould be amazing. I miss LG so much. I'm still using my V50S and refuse to replace it until someone makes something comparable. It doesn't yet exist.
idk, I'd say that Sony makes some pretty comparable phones; the only difference would be that they're quite narrow and have side-mounted fingerprint scanners
LG should really just stick to making refrigerators and other home appliances. The LG Wing just doesn't make sense for most people like normal foldables do. The screen resolution for the bottom screen is practically unusable when its folded out. It's really not that great and there's a reason why the phone flopped insanely hard compared to the relatively newly released Samsung Galaxy Folds.
i'm still using my v60 dual screen...i thought we'd have 3- and 4-screen foldables by now...i'd like one that unfolds left to right and up and down depending on what size screen i want to use...the wing was an interesting device with cool features...i'm disappointed, but not surprised, that so many were triggered by it...maybe LTT can do a tie-in video with a different YT channel where they explain how to use it (referring to the "alarm" issue)
I called it, I knew he was going to want this phone more than the wing. I was kinda surprised that this one didn’t make it to the vote when it was happening, but i guess maybe it was too soon to put it in.
No way this one would win. It's just another foldable, Linus will check them out anyways. This was the only chance we had to get him to use an LG Wing, a Fairphone 5, or a Unihertz Jellystar. All other more vanilla choices (Pixel 8, iPhone, Pixel Fold etc.) had some votes, but were way behind.
I will buy this 2ish years from now to replace my OG Surface Duo. I'm looking forward to it. It's a big jump over the Surface Duo and Pixel Fold without jumping to Linus's preferred form factor, which is less than preferred for me.
The LG Wing was and still is a phone I wish I'd had time with. I had an LG V20 and the extended screen before hole punches existed was actually pretty great. I miss innovative form factors
If I recall correctly that waterproof rating not being included or not being high enough was due to cost saving measures by not having it being tested professionally outside of OnePlus's facilities by the guys who do the IP ratings and they were still waterproofing their devices but not advertising it because if they did and if it did not have a rating it would have been bad news for them especially if they had faulty devices that could have had issues where they could get water damaged easily
@@shrimpgordita IK but although I cannot confirm this I assume how IP rating may work is you apply for individual tests to be done and the more tests it can pass the higher the rating but ALSO for higher ratings in many cases you do NOT need to do the lower rated tests only the higher rated one because I remember seeing a video once about IP ratings from a youtuber (who I can't remember who it was who did the video) but they mentioned how to get a certain level of IP rating your device needs to pass being able to get pressure sprayed at high speeds and the next tier up was just 5 minutes inside water and how depending on the device it can easily pass the water dunk but can fail the pressure washer spray test due to how strong the water is shooting at the device whereas a dunk in water not really putting much strain or pressure on the device and although the ports get wet they do not lose rigidity and form gaps unlike the other where spraying can create gaps in the ports and speakers and mics etc.. and since the test for the lower rating is not mandatory the manufacturer can get away with a higher rating whilst the device not being able to handle something that a lower IP rated device could handle and to not take IP ratings at face value and assume that your device is good enough because it may not be good enough and may fail even if it passed the IP tests
Definitely OnePlus at it's best, the advantage of being close to the parent company and taking some of their best ideas. I hope the next Oneplus flagship does something similar.
You’ve mentioned a few times before that you cant measure brightness in HDR mode. What are the limitations there and is it in the roadmap to work towards including those measurements? It seems disingenuous to insinuate the manufacturers claims around brightness are false if you cant test for it. At least thats how it comes across the way the script and delivery went imo
We would need some sort of way to measure test patterns while the phone is in it's HDR mode. Most of the time the phone is in it's SDR mode, so unfortunately it's not as simple as opening up an image viewer. CalMAN is the current software we use to generate and measure colors on phones, and it doesn't support HDR for Android. There are a couple options we could possibly pursue to get simple HDR measurements on Android working, but there's no timeline for this yet. As far as manufacturer claims being false, this is a tricky subject. When it comes to displays, rarely are manufacturer specs "true" or "false", since they are often way too vague to determine either way. When it comes to brightness, there are many variables that affect how much luminance is output by the screen. However, manufacturers almost never state the exact testing conditions they used to get their results, and since there's no legally enforced standardized method for measuring or reporting these specs, the manufacturers are free to adjust these variables to achieve whatever looks good for marketing. Even if we could measure HDR luminance, there's no guarantee we'd get the same 2800 nits as reported, since OnePlus doesn't state under which conditions it's achievable. All we can really speak on is our results and what conditions we used to achieve them. - LABS Team
I wait to see if next gen foldables are gonna make a foldable like this with high brightness and high volume, but with rounded corners, no camera hole, and thinner like the magic v2.
It makes perfect sense that dbrand would be a forever sponsor of ltt. In my personal experience dbrand was the most unprofessional and gross in their Communications with me. They're a perfect fit for LTT.
He's a productivity buff, think about how many emails and shit he needs to reply to. Having the extra screen space in a compact form to read stuff is genuinely worth the extra fragility.
I would buy OnePlus over Samsung any day, way better specks where it count's and really good quality at a reasonable price and a bonus is that you don't get a bunch of blotware
Linus's attitude towards LG wing is really killing any fun the whole idea could have been. Maybe just use a phone you like instead. Really not making fun content with it anyway.
Do you think he could realistically transfer all his smart home apps etc to the wing without going crazy? p.s. I think he said sometime that he always kept a back-up phone on hand when he did phone reviews in case the children/cats do something adorable and he needs to photograph it -- if this leads to more linuscattips I'm fine with it.
I really hope they don't develop under screen finger print sensors for foldables. Side mounted fingerprint sensors are soooo much better and more reliable than the underscreen ones.
Watching this video on the OnePlus open. The screen is definitely much bigger than a normal phone. Dont forget a normal phone has big black bars on the sides. And i like the square ish formfactor because i dont feel the need to turn my phone around to watch a video. I love that i can keep it in portrait and have a big ass screen. I dont even use full screen i just keep the TH-cam discription underneath my video.
I know that this is wired but my phone does the same where it will randomly start playing music and I low key love it, in my mind it adds character to the phone
You gotta give credit to oneplus open for making their first ever foldable phone, and if you look at Googles' first foldable, oneplus open really does blow google away. I love this oneplus open and probably would drive it daily if i didn't have the s23 ultra. Again, though, all foldables are above a 1.3k mark, so maybe in a few years, i'll get a foldable as foldables are my favourite types of phones. Also, give credit for the number of cameras and hardware that are pushed into this, and the fact that it's cheaper than fold 5 is actually really impressive. Foldables in a few years will be way better than foldables now, and im all here for it!
Gotta remember that it's since they're sister companies with oppo, this is more of a psuedo first gen product for oneplus, mainly because oppo has set the foundation.
In real world usage the OnePlus is only competition for Samsung. It does NOT blow Pixel Fold away at all because the Pixel has: **Pixel Fold Superiority in Camera Stabilization, quick shot, and image color. Still best on any foldable (save upcoming Huawei mate X5) OnePlus huge glass covering the cameras takes up half the phone and videos show light interference (lens flare) can be noticed. Plus this outer glass can get scratched. **Pixel Fold having the NORMAL sized "width" of 99.999% phones, which cannot be overstated. You have to rotate the OnePlus 90° every time, to get the width of the PixelFold, which is a hassle & frustration that 100% of Samsung users have to do. **PixelFold has the more advanced google keyboard, and complex "hey google" ease of verbal commands (AI), and speech to text in the google keyboard is unrivaled in the Pixel Fold. You don't get this same keyboard on other phones. The call screening and even voice messages coming in with text transcript! It's helpful software is more intelligent than Samsung or Oneplus. **Wireless charging is of lesser importance, but always a useful edge in real world charging access points. **The Pixel Fold is More pocketable than the taller folds. For those that think slimmer is pocketable, try sitting/squatting with a tall phone in front pocket. It will pop out! **One handed swiping, to reach the top menu bar, is easily reachable on shorter Pixel Fold. Once you get over the competition's honeymoon phase, you will realize that the bottom line will always come to the aspect ratio (they are all good otherwise), and how much more useful the "smaller" Pixel Fold feels in the hand, thruout the day 😮
4:45 I don't see a correction of sort, there is more than Samsung when it comes to flexible OLED. And if this is basically oppo n3, then it should be using a BOE display, and has nothing to do with Samsung.
It's honestly inredible how good these built-into-the-unlock-button fingerprint sensors are, and have been for quite a while, the one on my Honor 20 from 2019 worked better than any back panel or underscreen sensor I've tried

@@Kyle496 Well there are bumper style cases out there for foldables but no way for an otterbox.
My dog knocked my OP Open into a bathtub the day after I got it. It was in the water for all of half a second but no issues at all.
After the LG wing, he seems to appreciate this is one more😄
As someone who has wanted a Fold for a while but waited until the technology had matured, I can tell you it finally has.
7:00 You can hear Linus' soul dying while he is talking about dbrand. I'm glad I bought a phone cover from them.
@ about 1:40 , he goes like d-brand, if you hate money 😂😂
How was your ordering experience? I'm in Canada and seriously considering this device.
Linus has to go off script more in these. It's great. Great dbrand spot too.
I've changed the icons on my OnePlus.
I was reminded of a weird Huawei function I liked. It actually recognized when you used your knuckles to operate the touch screen and automatically selected the region. And the knuckle detection was pretty precise.
I had a p30pro and I miss that feature 😢
This is the only folding phone that I can say truly deserves the price tag, it's nearly perfect imo. I am so excited to see what they do going forward
Same on Poco/Xiaomi, didn't get the excitement, it's been common for years 😂
My OnePlus 3T lasted me like 6 years, just installed a custom ROM after official support ended and boom it ran.
the graphs in this video.. much clearer. love it.
I never skip Dbrand sponsor segments!
NGL, hella excited to see the wing adventure, and for someone to finally be able to tell objectively what devices get the best reception
The screen grab they showed when talking about peak screen brightness (2800 nits) literally said "Dolby Vision", which is in fact HDR...
So it seems the 2800 nits IS in HDR mode They should've figured that out by reading what they included in the video.
The audio recording sounded amazing woah. I have a pretty neutral set of headphones, eq'd to be perfectly flat and it still sounded full
when he opens the lg wing, the tutorial screen pops up. Loved it.
11:07 that mic is pretty good.
I can't wait for a year or so to get one of these on sale or used. This looks awesome!

I was so sceptical after what OnePlus has been doing lately. That thing looks awesome.
The main problem I have with foldable screens is that it seems like it would be much easier to damage them, and a nightmare to replace if they are.

The Great Wall of China can't actually be seen from space, or at least is no more visible than other large roads and buildings.
Hey Linus,
I was wondering, since I work on a company with similar equipments, are your sensors n stuff in your lab calibrated on a yearly basis? Like do you send them to calibrate regularly? Maybe give us a video about that to show that your stuff works as intended:)
When you were scrubbing the video, it had a dark overlay on it which made the preview look brighter. You even momentarily saw the video without the overlay, it was as bright as the preview.

Anyone else love the back and forth between Linus & Dbrand ? 😂
There's a reason why the LG wing was chosen
That alarm thing with the Wing is straaange, I have two LG phones, one of them being a Wing and I’ve never had this issue
i think they need a more tech-savy YT channel to explain the phone to them
Your relationship with DBrand is one of the many reasons I come back time and again, it's hilarious 😂

I think the reason that the preview was brighter was because the screen was dimmed while the UI was up
It's in the settings to make it brighter and sharper .. off by default
"Nearly creaseless", that is some very strong liberty on the word "nearly". Because the crease is instantly noticeable, even in that shot.

But unlike other OnePlus phones it is rated, just not highly
7:32 you made me get meeting panic because of that calendar reminder that sneaked into the audio and wasn't removed
Definitely OnePlus at it's best, the advantage of being close to the parent company and taking some of their best ideas. I hope the next Oneplus flagship does something similar.
The sound quality on these videos is so damn good.

I'm shocked Linus likes folding phones so much. It seems like all the moving parts would cause it to be so fragile
If you get them for free and change them before the break, it's a great idea...
He's a productivity buff, think about how many emails and shit he needs to reply to. Having the extra screen space in a compact form to read stuff is genuinely worth the extra fragility.
The thin glass screen is the only fragile part. The moving hinge mechanism is perfectly durable and is rarely the part that fails in folding screens.
He doesn't love them for anything other than the productivity. Same with me honestly. This is my next phone.

Side mounted fingerprint sensors are soooo much better and more reliable than the underscreen ones.

Can you do a video on what's the best gaming controller for the OnePlus Open and check to see if any USB ones would align properly. Thanks
Gotta remember that it's since they're sister companies with oppo, this is more of a psuedo first gen product for oneplus, mainly because oppo has set the foundation.
op opwn is actually the oppo n3, the third gen foldable of oppo.
In real world usage the OnePlus is only competition for Samsung. It does NOT blow Pixel Fold away at all because the Pixel has:
**Pixel Fold Superiority in Camera Stabilization, quick shot, and image color. Still best on any foldable (save upcoming Huawei mate X5)
OnePlus huge glass covering the cameras takes up half the phone and videos show light interference (lens flare) can be noticed.
Once you get over the competition's honeymoon phase, you will realize that the bottom line will always come to the aspect ratio (they are all good otherwise), and how much more useful the "smaller" Pixel Fold feels in the hand, thruout the day 😮
Linus was really digging the multi-tasking section.
4:45 I don't see a correction of sort, there is more than Samsung when it comes to flexible OLED. And if this is basically oppo n3, then it should be using a BOE display, and has nothing to do with Samsung.
Only downside: Still got that red 1 in the clock
It looks like TH-cam was dimming the video while you were scrubbing.
Im just glad to see he's still enjoying the Wing.
That camera bump takes the phone wiggling on the table from Samsung and makes it simply comical.
It's honestly inredible how good these built-into-the-unlock-button fingerprint sensors are, and have been for quite a while, the one on my Honor 20 from 2019 worked better than any back panel or underscreen sensor I've tried
When you do a video on a oneplus and the LG steals the show
