I suspect that Nothing is saying the 2a is a developer only item because it's effectively incompatible with 5G networks in the US. It only supports one band of 5G of T-Mobile's network (the mid band) and that's it. The manufacturer says "don't use this on Verizon" at all. Since it's not really compatible with much, I don't think they wanted to deal with the headache of returns for people who won't read the limitations and having a dev kit makes it painfully obvious not to buy unless you know what you're up against.

@erichb4530 because of ergonomics. Most people are right-handed, so having the back button on the right side makes it more comfortable for one handed use

I've been using a Mediatek Dimensity 1200 phone for over 2 yrs now, and it's been rock solid with great battery life, especially for the price I got it for. MTK has come a long way in the last 2-3 years and they're killing it with their flagship (& mid-range) chips as well, just take a look at the Dimensity 8100/8300, 9300, etc. PS - my D1200 is still more powerful than the 7200 in the (2a), 2 years later😎
@@askolds11 That's the reason I'm never getting a MTK phone. I got a Lenovo android MTK tablet many years ago running Android 4.4 and its upgrade path was only 4.2>4.4. Meanwhile, my Moto G2 is still alive running Android 8, even though I don't use it anymore as phones with 1GB ram are e-waste nowadays. Custom ROM support is the single most important parameter when buying a phone in my opinion. It is just stupid to buy a phone knowing that after 2 years, while perfectly usable and fast still, it's gonna look like 10 years old. 1:40 Their ram booster feature is just swap, a standard feature of linux (and other operating systems) and I'm guessing a lot of phones have that without advertising it. Samsung also have that feature. It seems like a lot of features get mentioned in videos about other phones that sound like something new or special but it's often something other manufacturers have as well
". . . just swap . . ." is the correct take. Long ago, I read somewhere (gasps, the Internet) that iPhones were doing this and very elegantly, which is why iPhones generally sport lower RAM amounts.
My Poco X4 GT is almost 2 years old form the release date, costs 300-360€ at release and has a BETTER Mediatek Dimensity 8100 chip. Same 5000mAh battery (which loads at 63W), probably same cameras. What differs is the screen, which is only IPS, it is not IP rated and it has a plastic back (good for changing the battery). But the Poco X4 GT has the most important feature, a headphonejack. All in all the same phone with a bit weaker SoC for the some price 2 years after...

8:51 because that's what the people (using selfie cameras) want, as a college student everyone I see uses some filter on their selfie camera or uses instagram or snapchat (somehow still alive) filters, while I rarely use my selfie camera or take photos of myself in general. Could be different in North America or Europe, I've no idea how the youth use their selfie cameras outside where I live.
I think the statement "VERY useable" is a great summary of the 2a imo. You get what you can expect for $350. Nothing (pardon the pun) that blows you out of the water but nothing that's horribly bad either.

@@Optimus987 might I remind you of the Snapdragon 888 and 8 Gen1 ...
Mediatek improved a lot after 2019 and i would say its more battery efficient than qualcom
Which means Mediatek will start having good reputation in 2029.
@@18earendilit's not 5 years ago anymore, custom roms are slowly dying, so driver advantages are no longer the benefit of qualcomm. since 2 years they already provide excellent chips now which rival qualcomm. at this point qualcomm is becoming intel with throttling power hungry chips.
All the recent chips have been good.
And just as powerful as the Qualcomm competition per price point.
And it doesn't have the exynos 5g modems which cause horrendous battery drain on the Google Pixel and Samsung devices.

I love the used Crab Rave as your sound test, lol. I have the Nothing Phone 1 and 2. Very happy with both of them and their battery life and lack of bloatware
Had the pixel 7a and now oening the nothing 2a. This phone is a beast!!!! Sold my iphone 15 pro for it and never looking back. Slick design, astonishing photo quality(just turn hdr and xdr off), battery lasts me 2 days and gaming permotmance is awesome! Never ever dis it get warm not even when setting it up (my iphone was an oven)
I just bought a SE and I love it. It's a phone. Anytime I'm not sitting in front of my computer- I'm too busy to play with my phone. Then, I'm at my desktop...

I'm grateful for how bad you make mediatek seem because it made me underexpect the performance of multiple phones and ended up with me quite happy with the performance. Thank you for overstating the negative aspects of mediatek. Only slightly but enough that it felt like a great fast phone. Who says low expectations are a bad thing? They led me to enjoying 15 hours of Pokémon platinum on drastic.

Cool that Linus still has his Note9. I used mine until a couple of weeks ago, and I would have used it still if not for the fact that I was given a S22 Ultra.
didnt jerry too had note 9
Mediatek's underated man. The chipset they used isn't particularly the best soc they could have taken from mediatek, dimensity 8200 or 8300 would have been a much better option...
I never stopped to think about the "back" button not being on the right whenever Linus said it, now I saw it, and I'm in despair about getting a new phone where the button is on the left.
can you explain why? the back button on an internet browser is on the left, the left direction even logically in a reading context is backwards vs right being forwards. I don't understand, was there some samsung model people got used to that reversed it for some reason?
@@erichb4530lots of Samsung phones used to have it this way, look at Galaxy S1-S7, all of them had it this way until on screen buttons became a thing

@erichb4530 because of ergonomics. Most people are right-handed, so having the back button on the right side makes it more comfortable for one handed use

"Feels like I've aged 10 years in the past decade" -Linus 2024
I've been using a Mediatek Dimensity 1200 phone for over 2 yrs now, and it's been rock solid with great battery life, especially for the price I got it for.
MTK has come a long way in the last 2-3 years and they're killing it with their flagship (& mid-range) chips as well, just take a look at the Dimensity 8100/8300, 9300, etc.
PS - my D1200 is still more powerful than the 7200 in the (2a), 2 years later😎
Unfortunately Mediatek devices do not get any custom rom development, iirc because they do not release source code or drivers for them.
@@askolds11 That's the reason I'm never getting a MTK phone. I got a Lenovo android MTK tablet many years ago running Android 4.4 and its upgrade path was only 4.2>4.4. Someone made a sketchy custom ROM later, but the whole platform sucks. Meanwhile, my Moto G2 is still alive running Android 8, even though I don't use it anymore as phones with 1GB ram are e-waste nowadays. And my Poco X3 Pro is running a great custom AOSP based rom since MIUI has some weird bugs (and there's China too).
Completely agree @@rodryguezzz
When they'll finally start releasing source codes, they will definitely start getting market share. Custom ROM support is the single most important parameter when buying a phone in my opinion. It is just stupid to buy a phone knowing that after 2 years, while perfectly usable and fast still, it's gonna look like 10 years old. That's the single biggest reason that perfectly good phones end up as e-waste. I still use a OnePlus 6 with Pixel Experience 13 Plus. More phone than you'll ever need.
Is it just me, or does the audio sound like its run through the adobe podcast AI enhancer…?

An IR blaster would be super cool, such a nice feature on the recent Xiaomis ive had. I think a Phone (3) could have a small E-Ink display on the back to display the important notifications, so you can judge if they actually are important

what's up with the audio?
You asked why you would spend more than 350 for a phone. Your video answers that think of all the times you said but and just like and not quite as good but OK and passable at this price. The reason you would spend more than 350 for a phone is because you want something that does better than it's almost as good as and well it comes really close it's not quite as good but it's OK for the money. Great review you did rockin as usual
Sure, there are better phones with better cameras, but they can cost 3x as much!! That's luxury product margins for an everyday use product. That's frankly insulting to customers. Flagships you could argue MAYBE are 50% "better" subjectively, but 300% is an insane markup. I wish tech was back to being perceived as nerdy instead of a fashion accessory to rich people who have no idea what they're buying.
12:30 Unfortunately it will be bottle-necked by the USB 2.0 port
Not really that big of an issue. And thats how it will be in the future on many phones.
Most people just use the port for charging anyway.
Why would you get this phone when a Nord 3 is roughly the same price but is better in basically every way?
T-shirt "I feel like I aged 10 years in last decade." in LTT Store when? 😅
I honestly thought Linus’ grandparents would’ve received thousands of tech tips by now, and they would be elite.
There was Nothing in this video. Why was it recommended to me.
I have nothing 1 and love it , love the lights makes so much sense and alow of a smoother light than just a led torch . I've only ever seen that feature advertised on budget phones so that they can put "4 GB of RAM" on the package when in reality it only has 2 GB.
". . . just swap . . ." is the correct take.

"I'm all about information density" he says, turning on 3 button navigation
Because it's quicker and more sensible, and tends to be less error-prone than gesture navigation, which while aesthetically pleasing is still rather predictive and inefficient.
Higher Density is literally fitting more stuff in a smaller or the same space, which adding the bottom buttons technically absolutely does.
@@sherlockmaverick It's really none of those things and gives you the full display area.

Swiping up is not slower than pressing a button.

Not about gestures like "draw a circle on the screen to open the camera". Those can be somewhat finicky.)

I switched from a Pixel 4a to the Nothing Phone 1 in December and my only complaints are the fingerprint scanner and the camera. The camera is workable with the GCam app but the fingerprint scanner on the 4A has way better placement and is way faster.
